S02.E12: Beach House

The team is excited to spend the weekend at Charles' beach house for a detectives-only-getaway, until Jake ruins the fun by inviting Captain Holt. Meanwhile, Charles helps Rosa send romantic texts to her new boyfriend, and Gina tries to get Amy drunk, simply for her own enjoyment.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine finally takes a winning page from Parks & Rec: Get everyone drunk and hilarity will follow. Of course Amy is drunk after two drinks, she was great. Until she became Six Drink Amy and became sad (but still funny).

The ending was fantastic. I wish there was more than two minutes of Holt joining in on the fun! "Real Ray or Fake Ray" was such a great thing.

This episode was great. Scully and Hitchcock and their scheme to sell Holt a sunken casino was downright scary. I loved it.

 

I could also watch an entire episode of "Real Ray or Fake Ray." Add the various stages of Drunk Amy and I might never watch anything else.

Me too! I'm a broken record about this but I love Andre Braugher so much. He can crack me up with just a look. Him sitting behind his desk in his underwear was a real LoL moment. I'm glad we got a little peek of him in his boxers.

I'm a little hit and miss with Samburg. I loved him this episode. On some episodes it seems to me he's trying too hard.

I'm still in love with Boyle. Who else would be that happy about getting a beach house for December to February.

I should stop or I could go on and on because I loved everything about this episode (except Gina). I just cannot stand the way she speaks.

Drunk Amy... was just the best.  I really hope we get to see that again.  All of the stages were hilarious, but, not going to lie: favorite was easily Fourth Drink Amy.  Melissa Fumero looking hot and saying perverted stuff is certainly always welcomed.

 

Had to temper my expectations after reading the description for this episode, because seeing that the entire group was going to be together, reminded me of my favorite episode, "The Party."  And, it didn't top it, but it was fun seeing the entire main group (and Hitchcock and Scully!) together, and just watching the way the entire cast plays off of each other.  It really is hard for me to pick a favorite pairing: everyone is just awesome in their own way.

 

Speaking of Drunk Amy again, add her along side Boyle as one of the few that can make me be OK with Gina.  This was probably the closet I've came to liking her.  Might have been because Amy and her craziness caused Gina to actually act a bit more normal then usual.

 

Vacation Terry was great.  Then again, anything Terry tends to be great.

 

Holt being a buzzkill was predictable, but I did like that Jake truly wanted Holt to be accepted, and Holt appreciated it.  I really like their relationship.  And the "Real Ray or Fake Ray" ending, was certainly awesome.  I would totally play that game.

 

Wish we got more of Rosa and Boyle, but I continue to like that there isn't any angst over Boyle having feelings for her way back in early S1.  He really did want to help her with Marcus.  I really hope this show continues this, and never has them go there again.

 

There was a lot of brief gags that ended up being my favorite moments.  Rosa wearing her shirt in the hot tub and Drunk Amy pointing it out was great.  I also loved when, at the end, Holt admitted he said that one thing during Cagney and Lacey's birthday party, and Terry actually gives him a "WTF, man?!  You really said that to them?!"

Does B99 ever have extended scenes online? I was also hoping for a longer closing scene. Or a Producer's Cut, like a handful of Parks and Rec episodes have.

Great cold open. Seeing Jake actually detecting stuff is nice, and seeing him try to rob Holt of his dignity, only to fail and then they're both dignity-precarious together? Fun. They took the old 'no pants' joke and actually made it funny.

 

First of all, I love Amy Santiago, regardless of the amount of drinks she's had. I'm trying to figure out which I like most, and honestly can't. Is it Two Drinks Amy, with her adorably loud voice? Four Drinks Amy and that sexy look on her face as she violated that olive? I don't know. Even Five Drinks Amy was obnoxiously fun. And Melissa Fumero is really good at playing drunk (I noticed that in The Vulture in season 1). Great touch in the final scene, having her passed out.

 

I like that Jake got himself into this predicament by being a decent guy and actually caring about Holt. It's so much better than the usual, 'trying to get ahead for my own reasons, and know I'm paddling ferociously to stop everyone finding out' shenanigans that most shows would have gone for.

 

Either Charles's sex life was awful, or he's completely oblivious to the things he says. "Texting. That's the most intimate thing you can do to a love with your fingers"? Poor sap. I kind of want to meet his ex-wife one day though, because I'd be so interested in how they'd cast this monster. But I also like that they did the whole sexting thing without ever trying to rekindle Charles's crush on Rosa. They seemed like totally platonic friends, thank god. And Rosa being a bit insecure and unsure of herself was a nice change of pace. I think Stephanie Beatriz is doing a great job of showing a woman who really struggles to express her emotions, but who suddenly really wants to.

 

There was one funny little moment, where Jake grabbed Rosa's arm and did his "I did!" Rosa impression, that really sold me on them being old friends, in a way that most of the storylines they've shared in the past didn't quite achieve. That sort of easy intimacy, which Rosa didn't immediately bridle at, goes a long way to establishing relationships.

 

I actually briefly liked Gina, for one moment. That bit where she yells her thanks to "Poseidon, great god of the sea!". First of all, I'm a Greek mythology nerd, so love any references to it, but also, it felt like one of those real moments of someone who is drunk and being goofy and uninhibited. But she's still Gina, so I know that one moment of me not hating her won't last.

 

The first thing I thought of when Jake came up with the idea of two separate parties, one wild and one tame, was the Blackadder episode where Edmund's puritan aunt and uncle are coming for dinner, the same night he's staging a raucous drinking party with his friends. So this episode had a lot to live up to. It went a different way completely, but was still funny. They must have had so much fun coming up with lines for Andre Braugher in those little cutscenes.

Heh, that's great. Which made me think about this episode and realize that vacation JTMacc99 shares a very similar attitude towards pretty much everything as vacation Terry. I'm not sure if that's why I loved it so much, but I think it helped. 

 

This was a really good episode.  And that ending...Holt's self aware "I said that" just killed me.

I loved pretty much everything, but I think my favorite moment was when Jake said, "And I just found a whole new genre of music to hate!"  The way he delivered that line was just perfect after how much time Holt took to ramble on and on about how much the music moves him. So funny.

I just rewatched. There was soooo much I missed the first time. I'd only had two margaritas before the show, but I guess they were extra strong.

 

Fun ep.  Loved Holt's final line, "AND I MEANT IT!" But everything was great. Holt in the hot tub saying he didn't want the jets on because he wasn't taking a bubble bath and wasn't a child was great. Of course, everything Holt is great. The flashback with the racist homophobic golf cops was great, esp with Holt's response to the offer for him to caddy. I just love Holt and AB. 

 

Drunk Amy was hilarious, with all her stages. 

 

Boyle coaching Rosa on texting was terrific.

Holt's button on the episode was fantastic. It reminded me of "Hot Damn!" at guessing Amy's excuse for being late. As stoic and steadfast as he can be, he's still a cop at heart and loves being involved in the banter.

I can duplicate a lot of what others have been saying (the wondrous stages of Drunk Amy, Vacation Terry, the game of Real Ray / Fake Ray), but I also continue to love the series' habit of handling possible conflicts in an adult way, without extended misunderstanding and hurt feelings. When Holt realized he was unwelcome and went off by himself, Jake (admittedly after hoping to be outranked by Terry) went right to him and explained how it wasn't personal and they all loved him -- and further, Holt knew that without being told, he thoroughly understood the need to blow off steam in a job like theirs, and that his presence spoiled that. That was great.

I cannot believe I'm about to be this person but I'm fairly certain that was Rachel's birthday party -- both her (bitterly divorced) parents came and, to keep them separate, they made up the "two party" solution, all while hiding it from the parents.

 

I still haven't seen this episode but I'm very much looking forward to it.  One of my favourite things about B99 is that, even when horrifically spoiled for the entire episode, it still makes me laugh.

I'll be that person, too, and say you are correct. Monica was not unknowing, she just thought she was providing a fun party of her own!  She and Holt would likely have a blast together.

The twist is on B99 they went in shifts. The Friends example is more like Phoebe was sneaking people out of East Berlin. I like that Boyle was helping Rosa with her boyfriend and no longer crushing on her like last season. Also nice seeing Rosa be insecure about being in a relationship.

Boo! Stop pointing out inconsistencies in my fun show. That line was delivered so beautifully, and so earnestly, that I've decided what people thought was Holt's bedroom was actually just a very bedroomy, upstairs sitting room (with a bed in it. Shut up) where he and Kevin sit together in their monogrammed pyjamas and robes, watching PBS documentaries and whatever the US equivalent of Sky Arts is, while discussing the day's events.

That's what I really liked about it too. Holt's "yup. No story here" assertion, completely in cahoots with Jake in their mutual desire not to be seen pantsless.

I just have to chime in with an "I love this show." Just when you think Andre Braugher and Terry Crews couldn't be more awesome, they are.

Rosa has officially become my third favorite character on this show with Boyle a close fourth.

My only regret was hitting the delete button before realizing I wanted to see the episode again. Damn my rote fingering of my remote.

I like how with each new episode, this show is proving its originality not with its plots but how it resolves them. The plots of this show have always been pretty basic, but where B99 always excels at is letting their characters be third dimensional and humorous instead of making them stereotypes for the sake of humor. Amy was allowed to drink and let loose without it being a major deal. Charles' text suggestions to Rosa were actually good and helpful. And I love that the show respects its audience enough to let the characters do these things without hitting us over the head, like "Amy the perfectionist is drinking?! Charles the weirdo is actually good at texting?! Rosa the badass is insecure about texting her boyfriend?!" I'm not sure how to explain this, other than sometimes shows will have other characters in the show address this in the episode as if it's a shock that these characters are three dimensional and I just really appreciate that this show doesn't do that and let's us figure it out ourselves.

 

I can't really add much else that hasn't been said. Except that especially since Charles and Rosa are a tie for my favorite characters, I love how their friendship is growing. I like that she seems to have a soft spot for the weirdo with the heart of gold that she's ok with asking him for help and that he, despite his old creepy crush on her, was so excited for her relationship and so willing to help. It's so mature and refreshing. Actually, the fact that all of the characters on the show actually like each other and enjoy spending time with each other while each individually having lives outside of their jobs is refreshing in itself and I enjoy that too.

Loved this episode. Vacation Terry was awesome as was 6 drink Amy. I loved Boyle and Rosa working together on her texts to Marcus. I loved Holt playing along with the game at the end. The whole cast is just so great together and they all add something to the show. I never wanted the episode to end.
