S05.E05: Star Sighting

Thanks for the post Islandgal.  I am not a gal of color, but to me it sounded all kinds of wrong to call her a "ghetto princess".

Actually Brandi called Vivica, "Ghetto Barbie".  Without being overly dramatic I once again find Brandi tossing out a racial charged comment.  Just because the person she says it to isn't visibly offended doesn't mean I am not.

Exactly.  Why the heck should she carry her drink to her room?  Should she make her bed too?  She's hired people to do this work - so let them do their work.  FTR - I can watch Lisa all day long.  She is what BH is all about to me (IMO).

ETA:  RE Max and his older gal pal.  Didn't Lisa say to Max in the kitchen "darling thank you for not bringing your girlfriend this weekend.  We all haven't met her yet, and it would be so awkward to say, nice to see you....now I have to leave to go get a Star".  paraphrased.  It makes total sense to me.  You never introduce new people to the group on the day you're getting a star. duh.  BH101.

Yea, I noticed Lisa saying that as well, and assumed it meant she had never met her. In her blog, however, she says the gal actually works at SUR.  Maybe she just hasn't met her, but Lisa has always said that she does all the hiring at SUR, so I am confused.

Wirewrap!! you have me giggling my head off.    I'd be delighted to come, I love dogs.  Prolly wouldn't stay for dinner lol.

Come on over any time. I do make sure there is no animal hair in our food and we have hand towels all over the house to mop up his drool before drenches our guests. He even wears a giant, thick, terry cloth bib when ever we take him out in public. LOL

Poor Giggy, his clothes do look uncomfortable but I doubt they wear the "fancy" clothes on him day to day. When we see him at home, he is in lighter more breathable style clothing,  2 seasons ago they showed him in something that reminded me of soft jersey PJ style outfit, right before their renewal party. I think these over the top fussy outfits are worn when he makes an "appearance" at some special event like on this recent episode and at events for the Alopecia Foundation.

I  must have missed that completely. I am sure I tune the skank out whenever possible, but I agree that is  offensive. I'm kinda suprised Viveca Fox let that slip by.

That is the man's job. If she wished to do it herself, he wouldn't have a job. Hopefully he is proud of his work and doesn't feel less than because his job IS to serve.

The man's job is to wear that OTT uniform and greet her at the door with a drink in hand.  If his job was to follow behind her holding her drink on a tray, that's what he would have done initially.  Lisa walked past him and hand waved him away.  It was a bitch move and I would say that if it was Queen Elizabeth II acting that way.  As deluded as Lisa can be, she's no QEII.  Perhaps if I was raised in a more classist society and was desperately trying to maintain an image, I could understand more fully.  To be honest, I burst out laughing at the pretentiousness of having a butler in this day and age, so perhaps I missed something relevant.  In my opinion, Lisa has been watching a little too much Downton Abbey.

I agree about David. IMO, he is socially awkward.

In her blog this week, Lisa explains that Max's GF is an employee at SUR and that the relationship between Max and this woman has had some issues. She would have been better off not even mentioning he had a GF at all IMO.

OMG! Is it Kristen? I could totally buy Kristen actually being 36. Plus as much as I love LisaV it would be sooooooo funny to watch her endure Christmas with nutso Kristen! Gold, Jerry! It's gold!

I could be wrong, but when Lisa was talking about PS not being the right place to meet "her", I thought "her" was the GF's mother. Someone had mentioned at the dinner that Max had floated the idea of bringing his GF AND her mom to PS. I though Lisa meant that this weekend isn't the right time to do the meet the parents thing.

I do not get the Richards sisters. They're so oddly competitive over everything! Kyle's super tense TH about how she guesses Kim gets to be the first one to have a daughter get married like Kim won some sort of lottery and Kathy super bitch face...what did Big Kathy do to those girls?

I don't see anything wrong with employing a butler. The man chose the job and probably takes pride in his service. He is paid to cater to the clients. Perhaps he enjoys his work.

Big Kathy pitted Kyle and Kim against each other for her attention and affection. She groomed each of her daughters to become "stars" and to marry very, very wealthy men and quickly have children with them to insure their financial future through child support, alimony and property settlement if they got divorced. She tried to make little Kathy a "star" as well but she had no talent. Big Kathy was reportedly "proud" of Paris's porn film because it made her a "star" and that was what mattered most of all! That woman was a real POS.

I agree. When I live alone, I prefer to not have anyone else come in because I don't work or have a regular schedule. When my father changed out of our condo where we both had been staying, I still continued to live there for some time. Our maid cried to me, begging to let her keep her job. She needed it, was comfortable, and didn't want to find a new position. I think Lisa was fine, and just wanted a drink brought to her. That isn't a very offensive request, I don't think. As far as Rocio, she is able to say no. Assuming she can't to me infers something more offensive. Rocio seems quiet. She may very well like cleaning and organizing and going about her day with some interaction but a much different work environment than a job with a company. I'd much rather provide "customer service" in a private home versus to the public at large. You're actually getting to choose mostly who you work with!

The phrase "do as I say and not as i do" is a cliche for a reason. Parents tend to want their kids to avoid the hardships they went through even if those hardships turned them into better people, or everything worked out for them in the long run. It's the nature of parents.

This might be true for some, but not all. And I don't think it's the ideal. Sure, parents should steer their kids in the right direction, but what happens when they veer off into a direction different than the one you want or planned for them? That's the question. It's hard, but do you accept it, or act "reticent" or disappointed? And substitute Max telling his parents he's dating a woman 15 years his senior and he would like them to meet her, with him telling them he is gay and would like them to meet his boyfriend - the hypocrisy and irony here is just too much!

The other thing that makes her a hypocrite is, as was mentioned upthread, her touting the importance of accepting your children's decisions and loving them for whom they are regardless.

THIS RIGHT HERE!!!

Lisa turns right to address her gay friends: "Parents need to accept their children's choices unequivocally."

Lisa turns left to address her son: "I don't accept your choice."

Vincent Van Patten was a child actor who was in the teen magazines way back when.  Lots of episodics, and he was on a show called Apples Way that I liked quite a bit.  Then he became a tennis pro and then I guess now he plays poker.  (I had to google the tennis part to see if Eileen was exaggerating, but I guess he actually beat John McEnroe once, which is nice to be able to say).

Did I miss Rocio arriving? Was she already there getting things ready? I would love to see them making the 2 hour journey with her.

Ken and Lisa came in the limo with Giggy.  Then Lisa asked Rocio “how was the drive?”  So there was room (temporarily) at the dinner table, with the cameras on, but apparently not in the limo.

Wonder if she had to use her own car and did they pay her for time and mileage, or was this a “perk” of the job, driving hours to sit in the sun and watch your boss get a paid-for award, followed by a dinner where you’re assigned to keep the dog from committing suicide by tossing himself off the chair, only to be dismissed once lady boss is assured that the camera has, in fact, captured your presence so she can explain what a fabulously generous and down to earth employer she is in a talking head when they ask her about it.

When Ken and Lisa were leaving, Ken said something along the line of "Drive Safely" to Rocio.

If Max was dating Kristen I would have to surmise that Lisa had done something dreadful, and this was his payback. And I would love every moment of it, especially when they break up and Kristen is showing up at Casa Lisa every other week to collect more of her things, standing there crying, while the swan bites her ass.

When Lisa/Ken arrive at the "star" reveal they were in Lisa's car, not a limo. It was the same car that Lisa showed on the little preview that included Lisa R, Kyle and Brandi all showing off their cars so I think they drove themselves to PS. Maybe Rocio prefers to drive her own car instead of riding with her employers or she had to leave at a different time. JS

And she's got to give up the long hair.  She's too old for it and it is dragging her face down.

I firmly disagree. Kyle's hair looks shiny, thick, and bouncy.  As long as somebody's hair is healthy and kempt, there should be no "age limit" on length.

Well, isn't that part of the issue right there? Saying that is saying being gay is a choice. And, then she's saying Max's preference for a woman who happens to be older is a choice. Well, is the latter a choice or isn't it?

Are the two situations similar or different?

I see it more about Lisa thinking men can date younger women but women shouldn't date younger men. Being on a public platform, if she didn't mean that, she should've been more sensitive to her words.

Ugh, I just keep on being annoyed how not only is he popping up on every Bravo show now, but he's supposed to be THE spokesperson for gays everywhere.  No thanks, Lancie.  Back off, hun & let someone with some intelligence & substance do dat.  Oh, but wait, you were just there to make some lame speech for Lisa's fake award/star/whatever?  OK then, that I guess you're qualified to do -- er, sorta.

Vince Van Patten is also Dick Van Patten's son.  Memories of DVP only for us dinosaurs though.  "Eight is Enough."

I have to say that Kim seems to have had quite a collection, selection of nice looking men at various points.  Monty, sick as he is in these shots, still manages to be an attractive presence -- so tall!  And the fellow we saw helping take their daughter to college was gorgeous.

It's too bad that we're not getting to see Eileen with her previous soap opera star husband, Jon Lindstrom.

This isn't nice to say but when Max walked into that kitchen, I didn't recognize him and wondered who the middle-aged guy was sauntering in.  He's so young but looks like he would totally fit in with a woman several years his senior.  Poor guy -- I've always felt sorry for him.  Both of her children, so far, seem to following work paths that keep them tied to her.  Nothing wrong with that, business being business, but this is the age to flap your wings a bit and explore.

Lisa, darling ... Surest way to prolong the relationship between your young son and Lana Turner is to make it forbidden fruit.  Let the child explore himself with someone else, woman.  I'm not surprised he went for an older lady -- doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why that might be.  Beyond the fact that women in their mid-30s are awesome!

Well - maybe it's not necessarily Max's girlfriend's age that is the crux of the problem (and Lisa is just using that as a valid excuse)....maybe she's afraid that Max will catch one of the nasty STD's that must be flying around all those skanky SUR employees that are always sleeping with each other, guys from Florida, girls from Vegas, and on and on and on.....

But would you hate it if the 22 year old were your daughter?

Speaking as somebody who got pregnant by a 31 year old tattoo artist when I was 17, I can tell you that my parents weren't thrilled. Lol.

My son has always liked older girls. When he was 15, his first girlfriend was 18 and he's always been with girls at least a few years older. If he was with somebody who was 20 years older, I'd be fine with it. As long as he's happy and they treat each other well, who gives a shit.

I think Lisa is a raging hypocrite.

I'm also hating the assumption that just because the woman Max is seeing is in her 30s that automatically means she wants a long term, serious relationship and kids.

Regarding Maurice's weight….he did just come off a vacation on a yacht, eating and drinking to his heart's content, and probably didn't work out.  I think he's entitled to put on a few pounds!

I'm as vain and shallow as they come.  I did not think Mauricio looked that bad.  He could hit the gym more but compared to most men, even on the show, he is still the superficially best looking for me this season.

However Ken in that white shirt with the oddly placed black stripe down it?  Holy moly talk about great pumpkins Charlie Brown.  If Mauricio's weight was yacht bloat Ken ate the ship itself.

When I read that Max was dating someone older who worked at SUR, my mind immediately jumped to the new hire on this week's Vanderpump Rules- Vail. Vail also has a history of substance abuse, so that would be...something. However, Max dating Kristin would be one of the best storylines I've seen in all time on either show. Didn't Kristin say that Max was her favorite Vanderpump-Todd?

Brandi is disgusting. I am sick of her off-hand racial comments. Calling someone a "ghetto barbie" is ridiculously innapropriate. Not in a fun wink-wink way either. I didn't see the podcast, but between the "ghetto barbie" comment and her comments to Joyce, she needs to be off the show.

Eileen's husband Vince Van Patten is currently the "announcer" for the World Series of Poker. Or whatever they call the guy on TV who talks about the hands as they're being played. He always came across as a normal nerdy guy to me. I would have never guessed about his past as an actor.

I was confused by Eileen's comments about taking a break from working when their son was born. She said something about how hard it was for the family financially, and how her and Vince bickered more. Wouldn't this have been 10 years ago? If so, I wonder why she brings it up now. Hopefully its just part of the "bickering" storyline, otherwise there may be some resentment there.

I'm dying over here at the thought of Max going out with Kristen. I almost like the idea of Brandi getting a bite by the swan too but then she'd probably sue so nevermind.

Regarding Brooke's wedding--

I thought Whitney looked very pretty. I didn't see Kimberly, or Chad and I don't recall catching glimpses of any of the Hilton cousins but assume all four were there. I'm assuming that Kimberly was also a bridesmaid.

I think it's funny how everything is a contest between Kathy, Kim, and Kyle. (Lol, I almost shortened this to three Ks!) I have to say I'm glad that Kim "won" this round because it's probably been awhile since she's felt like she's been able to experience something positive that her sisters haven't yet experienced.

IIRC Paris and Brooke are the closest of the cousins so maybe that adds to the competitive factor somewhat ? I think for Kathy she probably always assumed that Paris would be the first one down the aisle. (Not counting Vegas quickies that are later annulled. *) I can so see her being extra critical in her head and gossiping later to certain friends about aspects of the wedding that she feels could/should have been better especially if she gave advice that they ultimately didn't take.

ETA

*I know Nicky had the annulled Vegas wedding.

And she's got to give up the long hair.  She's too old for it

Obviously opinions vary on whether it drags down her face; I've never really thought about it or noticed that. But to say she's too old to do what she wants with her own hair? She's my age. I have long hair (not like Kyle's length; the way mine behaves, I'd be dead or swallowed whole on a humid day) with streaks of color not found in nature. The good part about being supposedly "too old" is that you can do whatever you want...which is why I and my too-young-for-me hair also wore a rather short dress to my office today with no thought to that dumb and offensive "no miniskirts after 35" thing.

Ugh, I just keep on being annoyed how not only is he popping up on every Bravo show now, but he's supposed to be THE spokesperson for gays everywhere.  No thanks, Lancie.  Back off, hun & let someone with some intelligence & substance do dat.

Oh my god, it's not like he's barreling in off the street to crash gay events all over the US. Why should he back off attending if someone, whomever dat may be, asks for his presence? What's the deal with Monty?  He seemed like he was dying when this was filmed.  Is he still alive?  Can anyone share deets on him?  Did he work?  Just a rich layabout?  Very curious.

He was an heir to a supermarket franchise, married twice having one daughter with Kim and two more with Terry Doss, who we saw and he has been divorced from for 20 years.  Kim is describing him as a wanderer and professional poker player who has landed on her doorstep over the last 15 years.  Apparently, they have remained close.  He was the producer/writer of a movie Escape (1990) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099517/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm  which starred Kim and Kyle had an appearance in it.

If for the last 15 years he has been bunking with Kim whenever he is passing through. Kim describes him as a wanderer. I find it difficult to believe this guy being an "heir" doesn't have a place to call home.  It is a sweet story of two exes who still call each other friend and soul mates, although I hate that term, and love their daughter(s).  Here is a look at Brooke's father in law, Thayer's father,  Andrew Wiedenhorn.  He is perfect compliment to any RH storyline having spent time in the big house.  Kyle's daughter dated Thayer's twin brother for eight years.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Wiederhorn

I'm confused. Who is being referred to above as having hair that ages her? I assumed it was Lisa. That is the obvious choice. But Kyle? I disagree. Her hair always looks clean healthy & nice. So it has more to do if she's still comfy with that length & is OK with the maintenance cuz she can certainly pull it off. I think it still looks good on her. Look, not too many women have that kind of hair to have that style at her age (or any age). So Kyle is pretty unusual in this respect.

Now, while I don't believe in hair rules, long hair can be very aging on quite a lot of women. Sorry, but it just can be. But it varies with every woman. And it certainly is not the case at all with Kyle. Hey, don't worry, I haven't suddenly turned into a Kyle groupie. I still hate her guts, but I do luv her hair. She never should feel the need to cut it -- at least not now.

Lisa, OTOH desperately needs some kind of hair change. She looks downright annoyed by all that hair. She's constantly throwing it away from her face, like she absolutely hates having to deal with it.

I grew up in and live in the Northeast, and in junior high school, a girl moved in from Texas.  Her last name was White, but for the longest time I thought it was Wyatt.  Lance Bass being from Mississippi, I'm willing to write off the white/wet controversy as a dialect thing.  He might have said "wet" and it might have come out more like "way-ett."  Just saying.

I guess Lance is harmless enough. Can't actually muster up enough feeling, or much of anything bout him, one way or another. If ya like him, then God Bless. I couldn't care less bout him. Is he talented in some (or any) way? I've completely forgotten.

Haha--I suppose he is, even if you don't like boy-bandery. I mean, he made a name for himself, so he did something right, I assume, though I personally have no strong opinions about him (though I have been known to get excited to hear a late-'90s boy band at times). He seems nice enough, I guess.

Ugh, this whole episode was a "skip" for me. What a complete bore this season has been so far.

And I just can't with Brandi's face. If they didn't keep showing THs of her before she blew her cheeks out it wouldn't be quite as jarring, but woof.... yikes.

I'm with you.  I thought it was pretty dull also. Brandi's face is like an abstract concept at this point.  It just kind of comes and goes and shifts and alters.  If it's true that Bravo is trying to get Carlton back -- sorry I can't link -- then I'd wager that Brandi would be the first one to go.  Or Kim but prolly Brandi.  Don't think they'd dare bring Lisa R and Eileen D on just to dump them.  I think B. is on the way out.

That would be me.  I was referring to the length of Lisa's hair as being more flattering.  Kyle's hair is beautiful, but I think her age is catching up with her and the length if horrible.  Clearly, I'm in the minority but when they show her in the TH with the curls on the end and her tacky clothing, she just looks bad IMO.  Vanderpump's hair isn't as beautiful as Kyle's but I think it's still a flattering cut.

Oh my god, it's not like he's barreling in off the street to crash gay events all over the US. Why should he back off attending if someone, whomever dat may be, asks for his presence? And the white-for-wet T-shirt thing? Whatever; has no one ever misspoke before? I called my boss my cat's name just yesterday. Doesn't mean I really think that's correct.

Tattle Teeny, you're the best! And I mean "dat". Lmao.

I can't stop laughing at you calling the boss by your cat's name. Did you throw a ball of paper for him too?

I'm constantly calling my granddaughter Kaylee which is my dog's name.

I agree about the hair too. I'm 49 and until a few months ago had waist length hair. I got tired of it and chopped it and donated it.

But I have been told that I look ten years younger since I cut it so I think it does age some women, especially thinner women like myself.

I think Kyle's hair looks great on her though. Any time it's mentioned that she should cut it I remember the party she went to where she wore the short wig, she looked awful.

Another disjointed episode finds Lisa V. receiving a star on the 'Palm Beach Walk Of Stars,' which is like the Hollywood one, but gayer.

http://previously.tv/the-real-housewives-of-beverly-hills/i-dont-want-to-ruin-this-incredible-occasion-by-inviting-my-friends/"> Read the story

I think these first few episodes of BH this season were totally neccessary because of all the toxicity of season 4, plus it gave us a chance to get to know some of the women outside of their relationships with each other.  It does harken back to old school housewives and I like that.  Plus, it has given us a chance to get to know Eileen and Lisa Rinna as individuals first.  I think the show last season made a mistake by not giving that same treatment to Joyce and Carleton.

While Kim being mother of the bride doesn't exactly scream edge of your seat tv, you have to admit it's leaps better then watching her trying to train that dog. (if you hadn't viewed the secrets revealed episode from season 4, you'd assume that's all she did all season).  I do like seeing that at her core is a caring woman and it makes one wonder how she would have turned out if she hadn't been a child star nor if she hadn't had a domineering mother.

Next week is when the women finally interact, and I'm glad there will be some Lisa R individual moments too.  I think if each episode has a good balance of organic drama and the fun moments.. it can make a great season.

With that said,  I think Yolanda/Brandi are trying to start drama with Lisa V.. and she isn't having any of it.. which makes me think the reports of everyone getting along till close to the end of filming sound legit.

I will give Lisa crap about lots of things, but being concerned that her son is dating a woman who biologically is old enough to be their parent isn't one of them. Lisa and Ken are rolling in it. I'm sure they are suspicious of anyone their child dates. I have no money and I'm suspicious, LOL. It's parental instinct. If my son OR my daughter got involved in a relationship with someone much older, I'd be concerned. But they should at least try to get to know the woman before they dismiss her.

Even still, that would be an interesting reason for why they're suspicious. Lisa and Ken aren't Kyle and Mauricio. Kyle from the first season reunion said that there was no reason for a pre-nup when she and Mauricio married since Mauricio didn't have it like that. Ken, on the other hand, was a successful restaurateur and club owner when he and Lisa met. I'm betting that 21 year old Lisa was also enamored by that little tidbit when she met a man 16 years her senior and married him six weeks later.

Yeah, I'm thin too, with a very young face (and I'm not complaining about that!) but I need enough hair to have a ponytail, or that ubiquitous poof on top (a necessity when you're constantly looking down at copy). When it's too short, I can't do that. Plus, my hair grows like a monster; I used to have a short pixie cut and, oh, the maintenance! A trim every two weeks or it got too puffy and lost the "sleek" look.
