The Bachelorette in the Media

A reality show echoing Sex and the City is a brilliant idea.  I am serious and cannot tell if you are, though.

I was making fun of Andi, but I agree that a reality show with the S&tC premise would have lots of potential.

I am of the mind that pretty much every non-competitive reality show, especially those in the vein of The Hills or The Real Housewives franchise,  is essentially taking its cues from Sex and the City in one way or the other.

And Andi is clearly a Miranda. Her being a lawyer is just the tip of that iceberg.

And so there is no mistake, I hated Miranda. Almost as much as I hate Andi.

What I'm wondering is if there is even an audience for this. I know the internet is not always a true measure of the larger public but still it doesn't seem like many care for Andi so really who would really be watching this?

People who know who she is or are interested in the premise of the show will watch.  It's immaterial that people like Andi.  Millions of people watch shows featuring people they "hate" so they can gripe about them.  Hate-watching is the new black.

What if she got three friends, and they met every Saturday over breakfast to discuss their love lives? That would be original.  Which is Andi - the high-strung attorney, the shoe-addicted sex columnist, the nymphomaniac in PR, or the prim-on-the-surface art gallery manager?

She's all of the above, because she's just that awesome! A nymphomaniac shoe-addicted high-strung ex-attorney, now selfie gallery manager.

I am well aware of people who hate watch stuff even though I personally never have because life is too short. But honestly, I can't even believe there are that many people who even hate Andi enough to hate-watch. She was the Bachelorette almost a year ago, her season wasn't that highly rated, there are whole new bunch of contestants that some attention have moved onto with Chris' season airing and the new Bachelorette season coming up. But hey, there's really no accounting for taste so maybe there is some audience for this.

I am not fond of Andi either but she is not that bad!  I can see many liking her in another context.  Is Josh all that good?  We don't know.

I imagine the people that will watch Andi's show are probably the same as those that watch The Bachelor shows, Big Brother, the Kardashians, the Real Housewives, Dancing with the Stars, America's Next Top Model, American Idol, Hell's Kitchen, Dance Moms, Pawn Stars, RuPaul's Drag Race, Teen Mom, Project Runway, Shark Tank, Million Dollar Listing, Long Island Medium, and on & on & on.

Once again, yes I'm aware many people watch reality shows but it's not like there's an audience for every single reality show - just ask the folks behind Fox's Utopia. So it is just my opinion, that I cannot imagine there will be a significant audience for this. I may be wrong but I was simply expressing that opinion based on the fact that it doesn't seem Andi was particularly loved or even liked as a Bachelorette, her season is already almost a year old and people's interest and attention span can be very short. I'm sure a few will watch, there's always at least 10 or so curious people after all. I just cannot imagine there is a significant audience for it. That's just my opinion, not declaring it a fact.

I think Britt's dress is lovely.  I like the silver satin.  It looks liquid.   At least it's different and not the same high-neck, straight sequin thing Kaitlyn keeps wearing. Did she buy a 12-pack of those dresses, in different colors?

This cracks me up because, of the 16 above-named shows, I watch three of them. Four if you split the Bach and Bach-ette.  I guess I'm not a good survey sample. Although I might watch Andi's show. Maybe.

I watch both Bach shows (not BIP though), Shark Tank, and Dancing with the Stars. And a couple more not on this lIst, Biggest Loser and Amazing Race (which could be combined for some interesting reality television....).

But all these shows are through network or cable stations. Andi's show is a webcast through Time.com and I wouldn't even remember to watch it, probably, unless it was compelling like Netflix's Orange Is the New Black (not in a million years), etc.

Why yes I do watch too much TV.

Saw the first commercial yesterday. It featured the men voting and HostChris closing the limo door to drive the unchosen Bach'ette away.

ETA: OMG - just looked at some of the guys' bios. I'm expecting a lot (of weirdness) from Tony, whose occupation is "healer" and who commented:

Q: Do you consider yourself a romantic?
A: Absolutely! I believe a healthy relationship cannot avoid it.

Is he a robot whose speech is assembled by algorithms?

Oh dear ... how did I miss Shawn E's "occupation" until  I saw an article on USAToday about the guys:

Shawn E
Bachelor

Age: 31
Occupation: Amateur Sex Coach
Hometown: Ontario, Canada
Height: 5'11"

Hopefully a night 1 casualty.

Occupation: Amateur Sex Coach

Well, at least as an amateur he's not getting paid, unlike the Professional Sex Coach Chris Soules and that boat singer visited on their date.

But if you're an amateur sex coach, doesn't that just mean you're a pervert?

To me it just means you declared yourself a "sex coach", without any training or accreditation (to the extent that those things exist for that profession).

Britt's dress is ridiculous. It makes her look high maintenance, like she's imagining she's a Disney Princess, or she's late for her prom. Not sophisticated or adult at all. And the blobby thing hanging from her waist looks like the head of a dead octopus.

Wow!  I never understood the whole "Britt is the most gorgeous woman ever to grace the planet" sentiment that seemed to run rampant, but she looks really bad here. That dress is so awful on her.

I didn't then and still don't. Britt is pretty in my opinion but I've never seen the overwhelming gorgeous. And a greater unpopular opinion, I've never thought she was sexy. Again, pretty and cute yes but gorgeous and sexy, no. But then I'm a straight female so what do I know.

Huffington Post is doing a podcast for this season of the Bachelorette called "Here to Make Friends". They have a preview episode posted in which they talk about the bachelor bios on the website and the 2-Bachelorette setup, with guest commentary from Jay Overbye, who lost out to Byron for the Bachelor spot.

I would have picked Jay at the time. He still sounds like a decent guy. Not pro bass fisherman exciting but still.

I would have picked Jay, too, but then I lean more toward white-collar guys than blue collar in general. I thought he was cute and he had a great career, as I recall. Plus, I'm not so much into fishing...

One comment on that link had me laugh -- someone said it looked like a disguise for an ostomy bag. Ouch! Edited by Andromeda

I tried to listen to the podcast, but one of the speakers has such a terrible vocal fry, I had to turn it off after two minutes.

Cute spot on Entertainment Tonight with both Kaitlyn & Britt.  They both looked great and seemed to be having a blast with each other.  Said they're better friends after having been through the dual beginning.  No hints on how it all plays out, of course.

Nancy did ask they if they'd rather hook up with Chris Soules or Josh Murray.  Kaitlyn said Chris & Britt said Josh. I hope that's an indicator that Josh is in the running for the next Bachelor!

Ugh, of course he ends his novella of a post mentioning Naked Twister.

On the plus side, he didn't bill himself as "amateur novelist" and his rambling writings do help us cross off several possibilities from any list trying to identify his actual talents.

So would there be less backlash from the fans if Bristowe were the Bachelor instead of the Bachelorette? "I think he'd still take some heat for it, but maybe just not as much," the dance instructor said. "It's probably a little worse because I'm a lady."

Bwwwwaaahhaaaahaaahaa!!!  She sees herself that way?

Link to comment

Eh, I think she just means "lady" as in "having girl parts," not as in a genteel, sophisticated, proper "lady." She has to be at least that self aware.

Props to her for giving the next guy in line a pretty good road map.  In her own words, intimacy equals sex, so at least she puts that right up front without any qualifiers.  Those guys are gonna have to put out quick if they want her attention!  *LOL*

Here are the Facebook captures of Shawn Evans going away notice.

Warning: They come from the Reality Steve site, but are individual captures.  They do not contain any other info.

Wow, all that soliloquy just to be eliminated on night one of the "networking opportunity". I'd say he must be feeling really stupid right now, but something tells me he doesn't have that much self-awareness.

And I forget where I read it, but the limo exits and cocktail party were filmed on one night and the voting was filmed the next [participants were to wear the same clothes both nights], meaning that dear Ryan acted like that on 2 nights, not one.

I don't know if this is where you read it, but RS had that info in one of his recent columns.

Ryan was escorted out before the votes were tallied.  So if it was filmed over 2 nights, he didn't have to be there the second night.

But he did go into the voting room and trash it. Was the actual voting on night one and the tallying and everything that came after it on night two?

Hm. What I got out of that story was that they actually edited the preview to make it look like Kaitlyn was ashamed, when in fact she is not. I'm not personally on the "it's cool to sleep with numerous people in a couple of weeks on TV"-bandwagon. But it makes me kind of angry that the producers would do that - because then they are sort of slut shaming her while she thinks she did nothing wrong. Of course, it could be that the preview was showing her true reaction, and she's only now claiming not to be ashamed.
