S21.E05: The Guy Who Starts A Fight

Recommended Posts

Tyra teaches the models the three steps involved in making love to the camera to prepare them for a sexy black widow-themed photo shoot. Later, unexpected chemistry occurs between two models just before a challenge on stilts; and one model breaks a major house rule during a night of partying.

Ok, so the purpose of the playing cards clipped to the side of Lenox's head was . . . . .?  Seriously, anyone know?  I assume to help straighten the hair somehow?

Sigh.  The stilts thing is so 3 years ago.  Isn't that stupid trend over yet?

Tyra mistakes giggling as giving up and thinking she's cute, with someone who is genuinely embarrassed. Of all the people there, Lenox is really the last person who isn't taking this seriously. She was just embarrassed because she was being asked to do something ridiculous.  Sexy head roles? Seriously?  Giving her a 1 was such a low blow when people have done a lot worse.

I don't understand Marijana who is 'dating' fake beard, but was dating Matt two weeks ago, but is actually dating someone back home? Why are we watching this love story unfold when it's so gross?

Oh, how unsurprising. Will and Matt were paired up in the sex challenge. Show is more how uncomfortable Matt's comfortability with his sexuality makes the other men in the house.

Men shouldn't 'booch' And she needs to stop putting the men in tighty whities. That's what makes them look like they're wearing diapers, not their actions.

The tighty whities are just weird. Designer men's underwear is actually at a boom level currently, she couldn't get them put in 2(x)ist or Andrew Christian or Ginch Gonch or any of the other innumerable labels that do flattering men's underwear? Or would they all be too embarrassed to have their products on the show, since it's less socially credible and acceptable than the softcore porn most of them use for advertisement.;)

I'm sorry but Lennox was getting on my nerves. And for once I agreed with Tyra.

Yes, Lennox is a virgin and does not know how to be sexy. Fine. I'm sure she has seen plenty of commercials that are supposed to be "sexy". Just think about those and try to copy that.

And this commercial wasn't even really sexy. More flirty. She managed to do the kiss just fine.

It was all so stupid but when you are a model, you are going to be asked to do and say plenty of stupid things. And being sexy is part of the job. You just have to FAKE it.

If sexiness is a problem to the point she is embarrassed and won't try then she should think about doing something else. Modeling is the last thing she needs to get in to.

Glad Romeo is gone. He had the nerve to say the frat boy (can't remember his name) didn't look like a model. Well, neither did he!

The hooking up going on in the house is so lame. That was what I feared about the guy/girl cycle. The inevitable hook ups and triangles. And it's not even fun to watch. Does anybody really care which guy Marianna hooks up with?

Tyra is patting herself on the back for Shei's two tone hair. Isn't the two tone out of style? Seems that was cool a LONG time ago.

And Denzel needs to go. Mainly for that rug on his face. It's not his fault but he's not that cute at all. Now HE was the one Romeo should have been going after.

What?! I haven't watched the entire episode yet, but this is great news.

It's to keep the hair straight. When you use metal clips, they can dig in and and create bumps in the hair. The cards act as a buffer to keep it straight and avoid clip marks.

Tyra, Tyra, Tyra. She almost eliminates the only person with a chance at a legitimate modeling career. Many models start out at 15-16 and might not be terribly familiar with sex yet, so I fault Tyra for not being relatable and meeting Lenox where she was. Sex sells, but when I'm looking at Vogue Italia or Vogue Nippon, that's not what the models offer, it's much more vague like allure or enchantment. Much of the time modeling is about be me, not do me. Then again, Tyra really has lost any pretense of this being a modeling competition.

I continue to can't stand that the photo shoots are so early in the episode  just to maximize showing the house drama.

Good riddance to Romeo. He was insufferable, and his Twitter beef with will from the past week proves that he continues to be so. I laughed at the fact that he was eliminated so casually and it wasn't put at a dramatic commercial break cut or hardly mentioned again. It was pretty much a shrug of the shoulders, and I lived for it. Also interesting was Adam's restraint. I had him pegged as more of a hothead, how terrible of me.

I really wasn't feeling any of the videos, but I liked Shei's best. I have to say Shei's makeover grew on me this week, but perhaps that's because it worked particularly well with the theme of the shoot. Raelia and her Cicely Tyson wig continue to irk. It's the cousin of Cassandra's (Cycle 8) weave. And Denzel's beard... just.... do you think he's the wise man with gold frankincense or myrrh?

I won't bother with the Real World storyline in the middle of my Top Model episode.

On the shallow end of the pool, while I was upset and ready to curse Tyra out via Twitter over Lenox being eliminated (though her staying was pretty predictable) I would have been upset if Adam left because for me he's the best body eye candy.

First, I am Tired of people announcing their virginity status in public. Keep it to yourself. Second, acting is a part of modeling. If you can't pretend you are something that you're not, you won't be successful. Has anyone seen a pack of 12 year olds dance at a dance competition lately? They know how to pretend to be sexy. Not a difficult skill. There are too many tall skinny girls for anyone to waste their time on one who is so easily defeated.

I may have missed it due to being easily distracted, but wasn't Romeo's headbutt to Adam's left cheek? What's going on, then, under ADam's right eye?  Glad Romeo was ousted by his own behavior, though. Karma indeed. And, as I predicted, Adam is starting to take all this seriously, which will make his eventual exit more dramatic.

Lennox, OTOH, seems overly invested, and needs to lighten up. And, no, Tyra, Kari dioes not look "alien". Aliens would be offended.

Those stilts were not only dumb, but dangerous. They've done that before? Kudos to Ben, though. He's already exceptionally tall.

An unpopular opinion but I was here for Romeo and love that he rightly called Adam a "busted ass frat boy" and read him as the non-commercial and non-fashion model that he is. A shame he did himself in since he was the freshest and most striking model there and I have no doubt his performance in his commercial would have been in the top if not the top. Yu Tsai accurately said he was better looking than some of the girls, and I also didn't mind his stupid gimmick. It was dumb entertainment, which is this entire show. I hope he thrives in Europe and Asia.

Very annoying how Tyra wants to keep Adam for his perceived TV entertainment value. He's dull and painful to watch--everything sober and drunk Romeo said about him.

I hope Lenox recovers cuz she's the only other model whose look I'm not bored with there.

Yeah, I thought that, too, but the replay showed Romeo head-butting him from Adam's left, but across into his right eye. I was glad to see Romeo gone and due to his own issues, not something he could blame on someone else. His witch bs, trying to be all mystical and evil, was tiresome. You don't have to mess with people because you're a witch, Romeo, you do it because you're a dick.

Worst assault ever. If he was going to get sent home for assaulting someone, he should've had enough sense to do some damage and make it count; at least that's what I would've done in that position (it's easier against another female: get a chunk of her hair, scratch her face, break her nose, knock some teeth out, and to top it off, flick a bunch of cash and a check in her face like she's a cheap whore (at least enough for her medical bills), and walk away. Against a guy, the most damage you can do is impair his ability to procreate either temporarily or permenantly based on what the situation calls for, insult his lack of performance, and make sure he cries for mercy in front of an audience of his peers. That is how you take care of business). Otherwise, what's the point; if he couldn't do it right, he shouldn't have done it in the first place. It's also obvious that Adam was not doing anything nor had any intention to help defuse the situation; he could have walked away a long time ago, instead of passive aggressively adding sparks to the situation. Wasn't Adam involved in some assault related debacle himself? In my opinion, this pathetic excuse for an assault only highlights how horrible Adam's past behavior is because this is literally nothing by comparison. Romeo seems unstable and probably shouldn't have been let into the competition in the first place.

One thing I have to give props to Lenox is that she doesn't appear to be drinking and/or acting a fool (especially given that she's underage and that hasn't stopped people before). If anything, Tyra should praise her for conducting herself professionally having been pelted into such a chaotic mess and it's probably her first encounter with such craziness. When you think about it that way, Tyra's conduct is appalling. It doesn't seem that Lenox is used to such a chaotic environment (and this cycle's house environment is by far the most chaotic thus far) and she is probably stressed out even at the house. Tyra at least had her mother with her to help her to bring some sense of security and stability. Instead of showing the appropriate maternal instincts and help this poor girl, Tyra shows she has the instincts of a black widow and devours the confidence of a poor girl who already wasn't so confident to begin with. If Tyra ever had an once of empathy, she clearly left it somewhere twenty or so cycles ago. It's sad that the ability to project yourself in sexual manner at that age is now a given.

The pairings scream scripted; they just happen to pair Matthew and Will? Puh-lease. Lenox and Romeo? Why not someone who's more accommodating and can actually help her improve. Tyra, what the hell is wrong with you? So overtly, setting people like this. If you want get on Lenox's case for "not trying" and not being sexual enough, why not set up any of the other guys with Will? Unless, you're willing to pair everyone up in the most uncomfortable pairings, you just look like a bitch for berating someone you setup to fail. Plus, you look like a bitch for giving people more fuel to burn poor Matthew. Out of six or so guys, you just happen to choose the one who's in the same story arc. I would have called foul play right then and there and made a scene. Plus, as a competitor, it's in Matthew's best interest that one of the other guys gets paired with Will and pretty much getting eliminiated on the spot, because they are just too straight to do something like that. If you want to cause controversy and take people out of their comfort zone, that's the way to do it. Any other guy set up with Will, would help take some of the crap off of Matthew or it would create perfect fodder for elimination (say if the guy refused to do the shoot). So instead of choosing the socially conscious route and possibly stirring up some real controversy, Tyra chooses to pounce on innocent prey. Very classy. A "1" is what you give someone who's over-confident to put her/him in her/his place, not what you give someone who's vulnerable.

And this is coming from someone who hasn't been too critical of Tyra previously. Really, if you're not going to set things up well, one would think, you'd have the sense to make the difference in editting. Tyra, I give you a "1".

Adriana Lima managed to have a very successful career of acting sexy while being a virgin. Lenox must be a really late bloomer to be that clueless.

Thank goodness Romeo is gone, I actually like a fair number of his photos and his look wasn't bad but he was just dry and boring to watch. And I know i'm supposed to cry about misfortunes of the generic skinny long haired white girl of the season, but i'm just so over them entirely. They just blend together into one generic mass, the show has to remind me Lenox is there for me to remember her existence.

The whole teaching experience thing was a good illustration of the issues of the boy-girl season concept. You have a female model teaching male models how to look sexy using techniques for female models. It reminds me of how last season several of the photoshoots were clearly made only for female models, including one for a clothing line without any men's wear so the guys were disqualified from winning despite taking the best photo.

Shei's makeover doesn't look quite as deplorable when she does a side part and combs some of the blonde hair over to the brunette side. Those eyebrows though. Wasn't Denzel supposed to get a "better" glue-on beard this episode? He still looked ridiculous every time he had it on.

I found none of the commercials to be sexy at all. I feel the overemphasis on sexiness had a counterproductive effect on everyone, not just Lenox.

Good riddance Romeo. I found him gross to look at. I loved Tyra's super-serious "zero tolerance to assault" proclamation when it's obviously a production choice to encourage excessive alcohol consumption in the hope that it leads to conflict. Maybe they're not *hoping* for a physical altercation, but they're walking a very fine line there.

I feel let down because I was expecting a culturally offensive clusterfuck of a DNA test results reveal. When are we going to get that?

Exactly. I don't know why Tyra keeps pulling those PSA moments when the producers push for excessive drama that invariably leads to a heated argument and/or nasty altercation.

ETA: Also I appreciated that Shei stated what has been on my mind about hookup drama and how they need to take that crap elsewhere. It really does distract from the show's original premise.

I'm about fed up with this show.  Even though I'm happy Romeo is gone, I don't think I can sit through another episode of Tyra manipulating the results.  There is no way that Lenox deserved a 1.  There have been worse models than her in the past that Tyra has scored a 5 or 6.  Even Adam was worse than Lenox and he didn't get a 1.  Tyra was just punishing Lenox for being unwilling or unable to act and pose like a porn star.  To me, Tyra's lessons on how to be sexy were more borderline porn star than fashion model sexy - just my opinion.  In fact, in a past season, wasn't there a model that Tyra constantly criticized for modeling too sexy?

It's clear that Tyra has her favorites and those she wants to send home.  At judging panel, the runway stilt-walk/posing wasn't even considered in the scoring.  Ben won the runway but didn't really win anything, did he?  I'd bet that if Keith, Will, Raelia or Mirjana had done poorly in the sexy spider commercial and really good in the stilt-walking runway, then Tyra would have critiqued both sessions in scoring the models.  I will be surprised if Keith doesn't win at the end of this season.

The pairings for the spider commercial were obviously rigged.  Just more of Tyra's manipulation.

Wow, those judging scores are totally manipulated.  (I mean I knew it, but you just KNOW someone was telling Tyra "OK, you need to give this model a "1" to get the result you want." (Though I do think she really truly hates Lenox.)

And these staged "fights" are totally ridiculous if you actually look/listen to them. "You're no model! You're no runway model! You're not even a high-fashion one!"  UGH, Seriously? STFU.

Also? ANother good reason (beyond the obvious model-y reasons) NOT to have alcohol in the house. (I'm beginning to think some of the models are borderline alcoholics. (Plus, at least a few of the models are underage; that just SCREAMS "Bad Idea."

I love seeing Matthew and Will togehter; I think they're both adorable, and bring out the confidence that each other needs. Will started off shy and retiring, and since meeting Matthew his conjfidence has skyrocketed. (And kudos to Matthew for not being hung up on any sexuality issues.)  And? STFU, Mirjana. No-one cares about your narrow-minded opinions.

As an aside, I hate, hate, hate the photographers this season. All they do is screech like harpies at the models with little to no actual instruction, and then make snide comments about their abilities in their little commentaries.  Very much a bad gay stereotype.

And I'm over the macho posturing of Keith and Denzel.  You two can also STFU and fuck off. Douches.

And Tyra? Enough with your secret langauge; I feel like I need a "Tyra to English" dictionary when I watch this damn show.  "Peepng Booch/Tooch"? "Werk the Smirk"?  Seriously, it's bad enough that "Smize" seems to have been accepted!

I thought the point of modeling was to highlight the fashions or the products. I don't know what the spider web challenge was for, but the models were being encouraged to be as suggestively sexual as possible, not to showcase the cosmetic (?) And the stilt-walking challenge - did they say who the designer of the clothes was? It seemed to be just another way to terrify the models.

I remember a stupid challenge where the models had to wear uncomfortable shoes and one models broke her ankle. Why are they given such bizarre stunts?

Also interesting was Adam's restraint.

Adam for the first time acted like someone who is 26.  Romeo is unattractive inside and out.  HOWEVER--he took some great photos.  I can see him doing the skinny suit European type modeling.

I actually like Yu Tsai.   I like that he's rude and bitchy with the models and I also find him strangely hot.

It was great to see Romeo leave with zero fanfare and dramatics.  What a dolt.  I've actually come around to liking Adam.  He's like a big dumb George W. Bush clone, but with a hot body.  He looks like Josh Brolin at times.

When are they going to take that cheap ass mustache weave off of Denzel's face?  I give Tyra a 1 for that Ty-over.  And giving Lenox a 1 was ridiculous.  Lenox is not my favorite model by any means, I could care less if she's eliminated, but Tyra is so rude to her.

Why did Tyra look 30 lbs heavier at judging?

Tyra may have inadvertently given Lenox a leg up this week. I have no idea how the social media scores are working (never bothered to really investigate), but making her such an obvious underdog has got to inspire the voters to try to prop her up.

If Romeo was a REAL wiccan, he would've known that anything you put out into the world comes back upon you tenfold. (Or something like that. I don't know the exact phrase, but it's basically you don't cast bad spells on people because then bad things will happen to you) I also have to give Adam credit for standing his ground and not fighting back, which is what I was expecting from him. But when things turned all Bad Girls Club in there and Romeo kept trying to provoke him, he didn't respond. And I loved after the headbutt moment when Adam threw up his hands and looked straight at the camera as if to say "Dude! He's out, right?" Oh, and the best part was that he was eliminated by Miss J at the challenge. It was so unceremonious and sad. He didn't even earn the right to be eliminated by Tyra herself!

The alcohol is clearly becoming a problem. I'm glad that it inspired Romeo to get wasted and act so inappropriately he got eliminated, but a lot of them are all being hungover and sluggish when they have to go do the competitions or shoots. There was one scene where Adam's eyes were so bloodshot, I feel like he was probably still a little drunk. Although I did appreciate when they were all woken up and standing there in their underpants/pj's listening to their instructions and Adam gave his package a little adjustment. :-)

I agree that the shoot was pretty lame. And it is sad that they don't get actual sponsors anymore. I guess nobody wants to be associated with this show anymore. Spider Bite? WHATever. Although a couple of the pairings had genuine chemistry. And I appreciated getting to finally see Will and Matt get physical!

There are two things you can't do on this show: If you're a plus-size girl, you have to maintain your jolliness or Tyra will eliminate you. And if you ever seem like you're giving up? You're out. Except that the bit where Lenox "gave up" on the teach was edited so awkwardly I don't really believe that it happened the way the show would like us to believe. Tyra gave her instruction, and then they showed her rejoining the other girls looking humiliated, and then they cut to Tyra looking disappointed and the voiceover telling us that Lenox had given up. I find it REALLY hard to believe that Lenox would just turn around and walk away from Tyra if she thought Tyra was still trying to teach her something and wasn't ready to move on to the next model yet. FISHY.

I just hope that next week, Lenox gets a stunning shot in one of those five frames (or even better, all five!) and makes Tyra eat it.

Under the scoring system of the last few years, isn't the final winner now the result of the cumulative scores from the whole season? If so, Tyra really screwed Lenox over because even if she survives from week to week and is a finalist (unlikely, I realize, considering how Tyra has it out for her), that 1 is going to kill her at finals.

Last season, I asked for Franco to be made the permanent photographer for ANTM, and I'm pleased that, while he's not quite that, this is the second time we've seen him this season. I think his crazy fits in and I love hearing him yell at these idiot hamsters.

Regarding Lennox : please, grow up, Lennox  ! And if you can't do what you're asked for, at least, try !!! And regarding the alcohol, etc... please, for people who think she's a precious little thing to save, save her by sending her home, because I think you don't have any idea on how it really happens in fashion world lol !

Romeo : Bye. No loss, You won't be missed.

Matthew and Will : love them together, and NO, I don't have a "bi" or "gay" vibe between them. And even if it was the case ? WHO GIVES A FUCK ?!?!? My hubby already kissed my (guys, 100% hetero) best friends, I made out with (girl) friends of mine, we went to bath all naked, went to jacuzzi all naked, once again, etc., and... WHO cares ? I'm not LGBT, I'm 100% hetero, and... I really don't understand the "problem" here... maybe is it cultural, as I'm living in Europe and not in NA, but, really, I don't understand. in French, I'd say : "grenouilles de bénitier !"

I think Matthew is capitalizing on Will's sexuality to keep himself in the competition - knowing that the straight who MIGHT get drunk and bang a dude will be too exciting to eliminate.  Will benefits as well.  However, I don't care about the games because they're both hot.

One thing that's pissing me off is Denzel's comments about men being with men.  Of course, sometimes those who have the most to say have something to hide, but regardless, it's stupid to make those types of comments in one of the gayest industries on earth.  Why go into modeling of all things and carry on as if one has an issue with homosexuality?  I hope he is forced to do a homoerotic shoot or video.

I thought it was ridiculous that Romeo even got to stay the night. I was expecting the producers to escort him out sooner, especially since he didn't seem to calm down. I guess they monitored the situation, but it could've been worse.

Count me among those who have been warming up to Shei's Ty-over. It's actually kind of cool, especially if her both eyebrows are colored in and she moves the parting a bit to the side, like she did at the panel.

I don't see any difference in Denzel's hilarious beard between last week and this week. Wasn't it supposed to get better?

I thought the point of modeling was to highlight the fashions or the products.

It's.. variable. This was supposed to be a perfume ad and those are often nothing but artistic sexy nonsense with a shot of the bottle at the end. So this one worked as it.. well a really low rent version(seriously that had the production values of a youtube skit made by a 12 year old). And there are runways which are more intended to sell spectacle and be a big artsy party than to sell their merch. And of course there are plenty of clothing ads that barely feature clothing(Given how often Dolce and Gabanna use nudity in their ads campaigns you could as easily guess it was a company that sells sunscreen for nudists). But the honest answer is that Top Model just has hit a area where it's shoots are too low rent for artsy/editorial/high concept ad styling but aren't actually featuring a product either.

It's too bad Adam's proportions are so bad for modeling(even for fitness/underwear modeling they're a bit on the stocky/short side). Give him three more inches of height and make his proportions favor his legs over his torso and he'd probably have the best look there.

I want to like Will more than I do. He's the only gay guy there, so he feels like I should be rooting for him. But I kind of have the same problem with him that I did with Cory. I know gay male models IRL, including ones so feminine they make Cory look like Clint Eastwood, and they don't really have the same 'I must play the girl/be feminine and delicate in my shoots' thing going on, that most shoots and runways will require them to be masculine, often hyper masculine, is just part of being someone working in the industry. It just kind of comes off as being unsecure in your sexuality the same way the straight guys wigging out about having to play feminine or homoerotic does.

Eh, I like Lenox so I think Tyra went a bit overboard in the low score and the next photoshoot penalty especially with frat boy Adam having overstayed his welcome.  Speaking of Adam, Tyra giving him credit for maintaining his cool after he pretty much started the nonsense with Romeo and then instead of walking away just acted passive-aggressive.  Bullshit, Tyra.

And yes, this show has lost all pretense of finding a model.

Tyra knows everything going on in that house because she's a producer and she's got to be watching dailes.  So of course, let's pair Will and Matt (eyeroll) instead of say pairing Will with Keith or Denzel (Keith being Tyra's chosen one) because their heads would have exploded or they'd have possibly walked off set because they can't fake it with a dude and be a real man.  Whatever, Tyra.

Also, Tyra giving her approval to Mirjana for her hookup with whichever Denzel/Keith.  Yes, because that's the kind of drama you want to encourage in a so-called modeling competition.

And the alcohol.  I found it telling in the AfterBuzz interview that Matt basically said that alcohol could be gotten anytime they wanted it.  If they needed laundry done, oh that's Thursay.  If they needed toiletries, oh that's Friday.  But if they asked for alchohol, oh, we'll have that for you in 20 minutes.

I know she wants a guy to win and will drag them as far as she can she's not even being subtle about it.

Romeo's right about Adam's looks but this was the first time I liked Adam, anyway. "Worst birthday ever". He feels a little sorry for the little twerp.

Who did Raelia say were the front-runners? Herself, Shae, Denzel and Will? I thought that was spot-on.

Oh and Romeo on his drunken head-butt - he said something like 'the events of last night were disappointing'. Weird use of passive voice needed to offer no apologies. But at least he knows it's his own damn fool fault.

I agree with milkyaqua that this show has lost all pretense of trying to discover new (high fashion/editorial) models. Having said that, out of all the models, Lenox looks the most high fashion.

Adam looks much better with his short hair, but he has a bit of an unsavory past too. I'm not sure he can act as though he's morally superior to Romeo. On a positive note, when they flashed Adam's family photo, I noticed his brother is pretty goodlooking.

Romeo drove me nuts, but I also think he has a unique look. I think if he hadn't gotten all of those tattoos and avoided the witchcraft thing, he might be able to do something in modeling. I don't know the guy, but I suspect he has untreated anger management problems. I suspect growing up wasn't easy for him and maybe, he still hasn't quite figured himself out, so he puts on an act. Combined with being angry, his behavior becomes erratic. He was all nice to the others, even Adam, and then it's like a switch when off and he got angry trying to engage Adam in a fight. I have to give props to Adam for not punching him, but he should have walked away.

I didn't get the point of outing the fight right before the runway stilts practice run. I get it's about drama, but if they had sent him packing without a word, I think we would have gotten the message. Tyra wanted to play Oprah at panel.

Count me in as another viewer who doesn't understand how Ben wasn't at the top this week. The dude used to walk on stilts as a kid!

I've come to respect Raelia. Of course, that could change next week. The one thing about her that kind of annoys me is that she has a lower voice, but she talks fast, so it's difficult for me to understand what she's trying to say in some of her talking heads.

I like Raelia, but I love a good runway fall even more.  ;)
