I'll admit, giant crustacean-themed wrestling matches sounds cool as hell. (oh yeah, it's a shout out to Kaiju Big Battlel). Can't believe it took the show this long to do a wrestling episode. Loved Gene telling the lobster one "Hello, I'm allergic to you!" Great callback. Speaking of callbacks, the pickle costumes and the rainbow wig were back!

Jane Lynch was great as Carol.

The Barbaric Radioactive Baby Sea Cucumbers was 100% a TMNT shout out. Teddy was a good sport for being their heel. And Bob (and Linda) were great to get in the ring to take over for them.

Loving "SpongeBoob SquareBra" and "I conch believe it!"

Louise perked right up at that!
I don't like needy, anxious Teddy, but I do like that he gets along with the kids. Louise especially.

Linda totally yells at the family when she's on the toilet.

Do you all think Linda used the new sewing machine?

I liked that the art supply store old folks became huge fans.

Yup. But I hate when I can't figure out who's doing a voice and I have to look at the credits. I knew she sounded familiar, and now it's so obvious.

That was awesome. I also loved Crustacean Nation Wrestling Federation. Fun to say!

I actually burst out laughing when Linda started to do lunges. There's something inherently funny when ANYONE does those.

I felt so sorry for Teddy. He really is a trooper with the kids.

We got more Belcher origins! Bob's grandma was precious. She really was so much like Bob. Really loved the spy story, I was honestly at the edge of my seat the whole time. REALLY good animation on the scene with the radio getting dropped.

"Aww, old timey raccoons." Gotta love Linda's everlasting love of raccoons.

"Small Package Peter."
"Gene."

I bet a good chunk of the season's budget went to clearing "Radio Gaga." Worth it.

Linda getting all into the racoons.

This was really good. Normally, they have the stories where everyone is in them, but this was an entire flashback with all different characters.

The 1941 animation was really well done.  Alice and Gertie's accents were good too. The apartment was so well designed too. I loved the kitchen.

I always laugh when Louise calls Bob, 'Father'.

I even liked the song at the end.

That was really fun, I loved seeing more of the Belcher family. Alice was so much like Bob, she even through out a few classic Bob "oh my god" groans out. You can tell the show was having a lot of fun with the 40s setting and getting to try some more thematic animation, everything looked great.

Linda and her constant love of racoons always makes me smile. "I guess technically all racoons are strays..."

I would never expect Louise to share a spy catching radio when she inherits it.

I too was on the edge of my seat. But first off, I was afraid I'd get disappointed by Alice being wrong about the spy thing, even though we knew Bob was telling the story about her breaking up a spy ring. Still, I kept thinking she was wrong.

So, fun episode.

I guess this wasn't an original joke, but I got a chuckle out of Alice asking Mr Miller if he had seen the neighbor acting funny, and Miller responded, "You mean like a clown?" Maybe that was a Goodfellas reference.

Gene: The Kommissar's in town. Oh.

As long as we're being pedantic, if Bob's mother was born in 1941, that would make her 82-83 now. My mother was born in 1949 and will be 74 this month. I was born in 1974 when she was 25; I'm 48 and the oldest of my mother's three daughters. How old are we thinking Bob and Linda are? I certainly don't see them as any older than 50, and that would mean Linda had Gene and Louise in her 40s.

From Linda's birthday episode, we know she's in her 40s.

I was about to guess that maybe Bob's grandfather went over to aid Europe before the US officially joined, but Alice does talk about the war effort (not to mention the boatyard building ships and...the whole plot of worrying about a Nazi spy), so yeah, Bob probably is at least a year off in remembering the story.

Wait, they said that this was in 1941. Why was Alice's husband overseas "in the war"? We didn't enter the war until after Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. I know it's a "cartoon" but that bothered me for some reason. Also, it was very weird seeing Louise in bare feet.

There were American volunteers who went over to fight in the war before Pearl Harbor. The RAF had Eagle Squadrons comprised entirely of American pilots.

Bob's Grandfather was shown to be in the Navy. By 1941, the US was unofficially in the war in the Atlantic. Navy ships were escorting convoys and patrolling as far as Iceland and were alerting Canadian and British of any U-Boat sightings. In April of 41 the USS Niblack dropped depth charges on a U-Boat while rescuing survivors of a torpedoed ship. In October, the USS Kearny and the USS Ruben James were torpedoed. The Ruben James sunk. So saying he was in the war may not have been completely inaccurate.

It's a little difficult to pin down ages seeing as how these characters haven't aged since 2011.

Since the original recording wasn't used would it cost nearly as much? It's basically a remake.

God, Linda's plot was hard to watch. Because she's facing possible Empty Nest Syndrome, she holds her favorite children's book author hostage. At least that let Mort be in the plot.

Frond's plot with his cat was cute. Loved that Dr. Bojangle's doctorate was honorary, given by Frond, and he can take it away.

There is no way Gene is 'going off' to college. He's going to the local community college and living at home.

That was a nice montage reading the books to the kids.

I always like the back and forth with Louise and Mr. Frond.

Linda, come on. We know where Gene gets it from. Although, good for Gene for figuring out the laser pointer.

To be slightly fair to Linda, Bea could have been a little more appreciative of what the books meant to the family.

At the very least I would've gotten Bea to sign the book.

There's never enough Rudy for me.

No such thing as too much Rudy.

Honestly, I think the writers realized what the Simpsons writers did ages ago: they get paid for every new character they create that shows up more than once. That's why we haven't seen much of the regular supporting characters. Hell, was Gayle even in this season?

I think we got to see the supporting cast a fair bit.

  • There were two great Fishoeder episodes this year, one about getting Felix to confess a theft and the April Fool prank.
  • Rudy was in the episode where Louise imagines her future and the halloween episode as well as 2 or 3 others.
  • There was the Christmas episode with Courtney
  • Linda volunteered at the school so we saw all the kids
  • Tina and classmates were highlighted in the cheating episode, the Jimmy Junior's dance seminar and 2 or 3 others

Oh Linda, that was painful to witness, but I laughed pretty hard when the author was screaming as Linda continued to advance on her. Come on Linda, just ask for an autograph to deal with your possible empty nest syndrome. Its not like anyone on this show ages anyway! Nice seeing Mort get to be a part of the plot.

The cat plot was really cute, Dr. Bojangles and his honorary degree is adorable. Gene really came through on that laser pointer, its always nice when he isn't a load in the kids adventures. "Maybe cats looked different back then?"

Wow, I hated Linda for 99% of this episode. She was acting like a lunatic and wouldn't listen to anyone around her to stop and realize she was scaring the hell out of a stranger. When a person tells you to stop, don't come any closer, don't follow them, and physically runs from you, you've crossed a line, Linda. Bea putting her in a headlock was well within her rights. I don't care that Linda was hanging onto memories and sad because the kids are growing, she was awful.

Is that true? I didn't know that.

Yes, it was hard watching Linda being so crazy and oblivious to how horrible she was making the author feel. Or maybe she wasn't exactly oblivious, but she just didn't care because she wanted what she wanted.  I did get a chuckle out of her calling the woman "Bea Author."

I used to read the Frog and Toad books to my son, so it was nice to be reminded of them via Snail and Newt.

I, too, liked that Gene realized the laser pointer would get the cat out of the tree. How does he know so much about cats? I was surprised that he recognized the feather thing as a cat toy.

I didn't understand something Linda said. When she recommended a tow truck driver to Bea, she said, "Head shoulders knees and toes." I know that's part of a kid's song, but what does it have to do with tow trucks?

Ooh, no intro this time.

Burger of The Day: The Plum Fry With Me Burger, Mama Told Me Gnocchi Come Burger

I definitely believe that Mrs. Doubtfire is Gene's hero. It was honestly cute that Louise would be into learning about Amelia Earhart. And how it connected with her and Linda. The animation on the shadow puppets were really stellar. And the ending, with the song? That was touching.

See you all in the fall. Or when the Writer's Strike ends. Whichever comes first.

I posted about giving my dog an honorary doctorate like Mr. Frond in the Great North thread. I have both shows' tabs up and cross-posted.

The family shocked at Louise reading. Linda was so forlorn - Why no glitter?

Anyway, is Wayne new? I don't remember him. And the puppet kid.
This should have been a group project because Louise and Rudy would have killed it together.

I'm actually impressed with Gene rigging the keyboard. This was the first time I actually liked Gene's music. The presentation was really well done.

This doesn't beat the whole Ocean's Eleven heist to get the big prize at the boardwalk, but it's up there. Kids working together; Gene not annoying and useful for two weeks in a row. When Louise really digs in, she can do anything.

Paul Reubens voiced Pat, but I don't know who Pat was.

What a lovely episode. I was tearing up a couple of times.

The shadow puppets were fantastic. The animation on this show is always great. I hope I never take it for granted.

Is Benji a new character? I hope we see him again. He has his eye on Tina. And Jocelyn. And probably any older girl at school.

I don't remember Wayne. He reminded me of Felix.

The massage was a great idea from Bob.

What's the poster in Louise's room with the onion holding a cup of coffee?

This season is really hitting it out of the park with these high emotion episodes, that ending was really moving, both the presentation and the scenes at the end with Louise and Linda.

The animation of the shadow presentation was excellent, I'm always happy when the animators can really flex their talents and show what they can do.

When Louise really puts her mind to it she can really do amazing things. She's very bright, she just isn't often that motivated to try when she isn't interested.

Poor Bob and his sad shadow puppets. "We had to politely pretend that it looked like a bird."

I'd say it's more competition than interest. Or the competition fuels her interest. The whole plot was based around her sticking it to Wayne.

In the big heist episode at the boardwalk way back, the motivation was to win the big stuffed animal to get one over on Mr. Fischoeder (even though he was in on it). She didn't know at the time though.

Louise needs something on the line to get her going. She was all for rescuing Dr. Bojangles because free detention was on the line *and* no assembly.

I think that's why I see her out of the three kids as taking over the restaurant.

I want to know who Rudy picked for his hero.

Spite is a very powerful motivator for Louise. We got Electric Love because she wanted to stick it to that teacher that was obsessed with Edison and wouldn't let her make a baking soda volcano.

Pretty sure it was "Benj"?

I was so moved by this episode. I've been underwhelmedish by most of this season, but this made up for it.

The other thing that's interesting is, while Benj is not wrong that making a bunch of hand puppets from scratch is time consuming, shadow puppetry has an extremely high degree of difficulty in doing it right. So this sort of confirms Louise as a puppeteer-savant. It's not just marionettes she's got a knack for.

Man, they got me again. Linda's talk with Louise, the end of Louise's report, the song, it all had me tearing up. Not as much as the Christmas episode, but oh the feels! The writers have really hit it out of the park on some of these episodes.

I love when we get to see both Bob and Linda be amazing parents. And helps to make up for how shitty and awful Linda was last week.
