Wasn't it the Baron?

They never said. And the Barren was dismissive of him while acknowledging Laszlo and Nadja. I'm rewatching and about halfway through and it still hasn't been made clear. Thanks for venturing an answer!

Does anyone know if they've said whether or not Guillermo is a virgin? You'd think he'd be in perpetual danger if he is...

Did Nadja's inability/refusal to say the name "Jeff" remind anyone else of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? They did the same joke with the same name, when Titus kept acting like he couldn't remember the name of his ex's new boyfriend, and called him things like "Jorp."

I have to think it's either a strange coincidence or an homage.

I don’t think it’s either, necessarily. It’s a joke that’s been used in many sitcoms. Like Michael purposely not remembering his son’s girlfriend’s name on Arrested Development (“her?”).

He had 35 wives before he became a vampire. (They left him because he became a vampire.) I don't know what that means in terms of culture or religion. In truth, I doubt very much the show is trying to indicate any specific religion other than "old world." As noted, there isn't much in vampire lore regarding formerly Muslim vampires and the effects a Christian church would have on them. Instead, the show just likes playing with tropes even if they're contradictory. If it's funny, they're going to go for it.

He had 37 wives.  He loved 35 of them.

Lazlo said something when they were outside the church looking at the stained glass window like “it’s the Jesus man.”  The delivery cracked me up.

So Guillermo just randomly decides to have DNA tests run on his boss and his boss’s friends?  Who the hell decides to invade people’s privacy like that? Of all the weird and creepy goings on, that’s just going a little too far.

An overly familiar?  I’ll show myself out.  <shame bat>

Quite a few characters have commented on how tasty Gizmo apparently seems, so I read that as him giving off strong virginal vibes/pheremones/whatever. But then on the other hand...

Watched the werewolf ep last night ("Downton Abbey bitch!" -- I am so using that).  The rubber bone throw was genius, but it pinged something in my head & I didn't know why.

I just remembered:

That scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where the crowd clears and Indy sees the big man with the bigger scimitar -- he panics for a second, then pulls out his gun and shoots the guy through the heart.

Yes?

eta: okayyyy, maybe that was a stretch.  But there was the giant werewolf "champion", towering over the group, and a rattled Nandor, rifling through his weapons kit, until he grabbed the squeak toy bone and tossed it off the roof.

If vampires don't show up in mirrors, how does Nadja do her hair and makeup?

Polaroid camera and another person? I'd say that cameras hooked into computers would be used (like in the movie), but I don't think these vampires are smart enough,, and Guillermo strikes me as a "I didn't do that because you never asked" type. And his boss is Nandor, who strikes me as not giving a shit about technology.

Maybe that's why they have so many photos in their home-they miss seeing themselves.

Laszlo certainly does. But of course he can always watch 100 years of bad porn.

Perhaps that's the answer for the others.

I could see Nadja doing porn. Perhaps even Nandor. "No, Guillermo! Is 'vampires only' gang bang!"

Colin, though... not so much. I think he has a normal reflection anyway though.

He calls him "the Jeepers Man".  I put on the closed captioning to make sure.  I love everything Matt Berry does.  Them in the church was also a stroke of genius.

Is it season 2 yet??

I've (I think) avoided pointing this out so far, but the late fantasy author Terry Pratchett (RIP) did roughly the same gag in one of his novels years ago, only the object that was thrown to trigger the werewolf's 'fetch' instinct was a stick ... of dynamite. 🙂

To be honest, I'd barely even heard of "Only Lovers Left Alive" before Tilda came on this show. I finally decided to check it out. Holy crap, that was a mistake. Boring, insufferably pretentious, and not even a single person yelling "BAT!" I watched about half an hour of it, then it sat unwatched in my DVD player for another day, then I said "screw this" and mailed it back to Netflix. Now I need to cleanse my pallette with a real vampire movie, like "The Deathmaster" or "Scream, Blacula, Scream."

It not her fault the movie sucked, though. It was a boring script. Shit, I would happily star in far, far worse movies than that, and probably for less money, if the opportunity was offered. I did enjoy her WWDitS character, and I think she was a great sport for coming on and spoofing herself.

I love Jim Jarmusch, and felt Only Lovers Left Alive was a sweet movie about lovers throughout the centuries, their weariness with their vampiric existence, and their appreciation for safety, and true friends. It really only scare-startled me once, and that was the very end. I didn't find it pretentious, because they were pretty glum characters, who were struggling to find the beauty in the world after living for so long. They weren't high-falutin' at all, or putting on airs. They were... shabby.

I loved the movie.

I loved the movie.

I enjoyed it as well.  I do like how the film explores the changes in human blood over time and how that effects vampires.  Which is something that I think gets overlooked in many vampire stories.  With all the chemicals that humans ingest combined with all the pharmaceuticals we take on a daily basis, I find this an interesting line of thought.

I would also like to see in season 2, what happens when our vampires chow down on a virgin who takes ADHD medication, prozac, etc.  We know that they can get high from drinking blood.  I would love to see Nandor on amphetamines racing around the house.  Do any of these drugs have an opposite effect on vampires than they do on humans?

Matt Berry is a damn treasure. Do I watch him yelling "FATHAAAAAAAA???!!!!!!" and getting in a slap fight with a priest when I need a laugh? Yes, yes I do.

"We're on drug blood".

"No, no, Nandor. That's the Stairmaster. The master of the stairs."

"Lazlo was very nearly summoned when he turned a baby into a vampire which is a big NONO...It's true, you're not supposed to do that, but to be honest, I was bored."

That episode has so many gems, but Lazlo's lines are my favorites.

Kristen Schaal's vamp are my second favorite. "We sent ravens...WE SENT 500 RAVENS!"

Love this show to pieces. Even the inconsistencies are hilarious if you don't look at them too closely.

But here's one thing (I checked through the forum and didn't see anyone else ask this) ...

When they were in the cages at the animal shelter, why couldn't they have simply broken out?

They have the strength for it. Nadja barely tapped that guy at the carnival and he went flying 20 feet.

Because the wire frames of the cages form a multitude of crosses.  (I just made that up.)

Hah, sounds good, except it should have caused them anguish like when Guillermo crossed his fingers.

But I like your thinking!

Honestly, it wouldn't have been as funny if they did just destroy the cages to escape so, in the interests of hilarity, I approve.

I think they were going for a quiet escape without the humans finding out they were ever there.

Also, Nandor can turn into mist, like Dracula.  So why not just mist out of the cage, free Lazlo and leave out the window (BAT!)?  Simply put, because it was way more funnier the way they did it.  Seeing the two of them smooshed into cages was hilarious.

"God damn these electric sex pants."

One of the funniest lines ever spoken in history.

I noticed something odd revisiting the final episode. Why is Doug Jones listed in the credits? The Baron certainly didn't make an appearance, unless I am totally blanking on a flashback scene. There weren't even a lot of minor players in this episode. Did he play the priest?

Whether he was in it or not--isn't it fairly common practice to include the names of all key series actors in the credits of all episodes, whether the actor appears in that one or not? I know I've seen this done many times, no doubt as a contractual matter or part of a SAG agreement or whatnot.

Yes if they’re considered a series regular, no if they’re a guest star.

Just a heads up - a request has to make a full forum for this show has been submitted, and if approved, it would happen sometime in the next few days. This means that you will need to re-follow the full forum for it to appear on your customized home page. The forum will appear in the ‘recently created forums’ at the bottom of the home page.

Please pm me with any questions!

Also, Nandor can turn into mist, like Dracula.

He can? When did we ever see him do that?

Nandor's initial "interview" in the pilot is possibly my favorite Nandor moment of the season, when he explained how he used to pillage a lot. "People would say, 'please don't pillage me!' and I would say "nooooooooo, I pillage everyone . . . including you!' "
