Well good for Alexei. He's experiencing the Olympics the best way and that's what's important.

ETA: I thought Tara's comment about "all the miserable days at the rink" was sort of revealing and it kind of makes me understand her commentary more. Tara was clearly a harsh perfectionist on herself and any misery was worth pushing through. Johnny seems to have more empathy for the headcases because he was very inconsistent. You can tell Tara doesn't get why someone like Bychenko is ecstatic with a non-medal skate.

Aw, Bychenko was a delight!  So nice to see him so happy.  Those are the Olympic moments I love.  And it’s so sweet that Johnny shared that Bychenko’s wife moving over to the U.S. has made him extra happy.

Then we'd be stuck with Al Trautwig.

OMG NOOOOOOOOO

*sniffle*  missing Uncle Dick right now...in his better days mind you, the last couple of years before he retired, that's exactly how he sounded, tired.  In his prime though he could be a rockin' dude to listen to.

He's been live tweeting the singles events.  He's just as pithy and insightful in his commentary on Twitter as he was on TV.

From way back

Quote

I remember always being a little perplexed when people praised Brian Boitano's steadfast loyalty to Linda Leaver as a virtue in itself.  It was certainly good judgment for Boitano (clearly it worked extremely well for him), but it wouldn't necessarily work for the next skater.

If I remember from a book on skating, Linda was smart in that she would send Brian to specialists for short “workshops” to hone his craft.  He had no need to leave her because she  managed his training so well. The book said the whispered question among the skating community was when he was as going to wake up and get a real coach, and some coaches actually called him.

So glad to see Nathan skate well in a he long!

Nathan Chen! Awesome! He could potentially medal. But he'll need help from the top contenders. Glad he was able to pull it together. Perhaps coming in 17th in the SP took off some of the pressure.

Nathan Mao Asada'd it!

I am so, so happy he came out and skated like THAT. He won't medal (sorry, NBC) but he should be darn proud of himself for fighting back like that. Of course, at that point, the pressure was off. But still great to see.

Nathan Chen is the new Kurt Browning.  Hell even Kurt Browning said "He's doing what I did in Lillehammer: skating for pride."

I hope he builds on this and not look at this as a total failure.  He rebounded enough to say "I'll see you all in 4 years."
