Funny, I know I say: "Bet it all!" when certain FJ categories come up.

I much prefer that to "I've always wanted to say it, make it a True Daily Double, Alex." Contestants who say that make me stabby. I like the "Bet it all" phraseology. I know you were referring to FJ though, and I, too, bet my entire bank when some categories appear at FJ.

My irresistible would be equestrian or horse knowledge. I loved it a few month back when they did a category with riding equipment.

Let's hope we don't end up on the same show with this category, Mindthinkr, because I would have to kidnap and lock you in a back room somewhere. I was born horse crazy and although I only own two now, I had 30 at one time, when I stood a stallion and raised foals. I've shown horses in all disciplines and used to catch ride at shows, back when I was younger, thinner and better looking. Ha, yes, appearance does make a difference, even in the horse world.

I missed today's show so am waiting to read here how it went. I hope the champ woman repeated, unless someone better came along (doubtful).

Hmm..I PM’d you.

Is a service station the same as a filling station?

My TS I can remember are vis a vis and ARCO.

I know the rulings are so wack on this show but the Manderley one bugged me because I also say it “Mander-lay” because I’ve never heard it said aloud, and reading the spelling of it, I would say the “ay” sound.

Because I am nothing if not a lunatic sometimes for FJ I first said The Dust Bowl.  I did have enough time to change to the Empire State Building.

I am unsure why the Statue of Liberty would make sense.

Since we're talking about dream boards, mine would be 80s Music, anything about sports, Books and Authors, Potent Potables, US Presidents (or really any US history type of category), and any word puzzle category. For final, probably Academy Awards since I've studied and memorized almost everything about them just in case I ever get that Jeopardy call. The categories with which I struggle the most are classical music, ballet, and art. I really would need to brush up on fine arts before going on the show.

My question for the board: Which Final Jeopardy category would tempt you to bet every penny you had, regardless of the situation because you're positive you'd get it right? In other words, what is your instaget category? Obviously, mine would be Academy Awards.

My "bet it all" category would be Classic Rock.  I've read so many books, listened to so many albums, and studied so many charts that I'd get most anything thrown at me.  "The Waitresses" was an instaget for me recently.  I know artists' real names and can cover most anything vaguely under the Classic Rock umbrella (Rockabilly? check.  Punk? check.  New Wave? check.  You get the picture).

I yelled at the TV about that ruling too, but then I figured maybe the judges heard "Man DA lay", and not Man DER lay.    And since there is an actual Mandalay, which Paul might be what Paul meant, they ruled against him.

Paul was kinda mumbly -- enunciation might have helped him.

I missed today's show, but this intrigues me ... was the clue about the book/movie "Rebecca"? Or about the casino/hotel in Las Vegas? If it was VANderlay, I'd say it was a Seinfeld reference. So many options!

  • Love 5

Yay, Halifax! I'm always tickled to see a Nova Scotia reference :) And happy that a contestant knew it.

What was Maryann doing after she answered the James Madison question? Would I have understood if I hadn't skipped the interviews?

I agree, I think it was the lack of an "r" and not "lay" vs "lee" that they were ruling against. Hard to say with some of the judging lately though....

I forgot Paul was even there until the first round was nearly over.  How could he not come up with the House of Representatives (something he really should have known) after being prompted to be more specific after saying Congress?!  I can’t believe he was even in contention, let alone wound up in second place; what an odd performance that was.

The missed DD of Alexandria was rather surprising; for the average contestant, wouldn’t you know it has to be a city in Egypt, and then knowing it has to have an X get you to Alexandria?  Maybe it just came too early in the game and Amy's nerves were a factor.

Vis-a-vis as a TS was unequivocally surprising to me.  Same with ARCO, unless those stations are only regional (just like not knowing Los Angeles in the farmers market clue that followed in that category would be unfathomable to me, but I live here).

None of them ever relied on the AAA discount in choosing hotels, to remember the diamonds rather than stars?  That was a good chunk of my 20s.

Is accepting "Mary Tyler Moore," when the category asked for the show from which the clue show was spin off, legitimate?  I know the title card just showed her name, but wasn't the name of the show officially The Mary Tyler Moore Show?

Honestly I just could not come up with Alexandria either. And then I got the rest of the category right. That particular question was just really difficult for me. And I couldn't tell you the last time I've heard "Alexandria, Greece" come up in every day life for me.

Still loving the new champ and really hope she sticks around for a long while.

Ugh too many late work nights and missing Jeopardy! I had to binge watch Fri, Mon & Tues tonight but one plus is it got me through the Alan games rather quickly. The new champ seems nice.

The only TS I got today were Alexandria and vis-a-vis. FJ was an instaget. I feel like FJ this season has been either super easy for me or impossible to get.

Paul definitely said "Man-Da-Lay," no R sound.  Like the Road where the Flyin'-Fishes Play!  (Anyone get that reference?) ;-)

When he first appeared and opened his mouth, I wondered why Ryan Stiles (but maybe a little shorter)  was talking like he was from Joisey!

I have read Rebecca many times and always pronounced it Manderlay (actually Mandalay because I'm British and don't do "Rs").  Anyway, I went to You Tube and sure enough, Joan Fontaine clearly says Manderlee.  Now I'm going to rewatch the film.

To me he looked like actor Jere Burns.

I got Arco, Los Angeles, Washington Square, Arrow (but only after she said The Green Arrow), the SF Chronicle (a guess), and the DD of Alexandria.

I also got FJ. When it comes to dates, I associate The Empire State Bldg with the original King Kong movie, which came out in 1933.

I also didn't think they should have accepted just Mary Tyler Moore.  They were asking for the name of the show.  I'm just glad he didn't win.

Huh?  Antony and Cleopatra died in Alexandria, Egypt.

Ha - I have no idea how that came out of my fingertips.  Well, I do, in that it has been a day of bad news and I'd had a couple of drinks before I watched, but damn.  But, yeah, substitute Egypt for Greece in my original post, and I'll go edit; thanks!

Doesn't matter HOW you get to the right answer, as long as you get it.

I liked Paul's accent, and loved that he knew that Vanderpump Rules was a spin-off of the RHoBH. Too bad he forgot the word 'Real', and omitted the 'r' sound in Manderley. But not getting the House of Representatives, especially after being given a BMS second chance - ouch!

TS I got were Alexandria (Amy's missed DD), Scarlet Witch, vis a vis, ARCO, Washington Square, 3 stars (thank you, Top Chef), SF Chronicle (guess). My first thought for FJ was the Statue of Liberty, but realized it was too small, so went with - Earth. I fully accept my title of dumbass of the day.

No, her interview was about watching Italy win the World Cup in a convent in Rome. I was wondering what that wave was all about also.

Drinks are good!  And sometimes necessary when watching Kit Carson Jeopardy!  ??

Broadway Musicals. I fantasize I can't be caught and FJ is Broadway Musicals. I bet every penny. The clue wants us to name 2 Leonard Bernstein musicals. [They actually did that once, for FJ, and everybody wrote West Side Story but couldn't think of a second show. I would have won bigly!]

Or, WOMEN authors. Heh!

My gets were the same as you. I also got FJ based on the year. I like Maryann. It's nice to have an inoffensive contestant to root for. I don't think she'll be around long, but I'm digging her..

I also completely forgot there was a third contestant until he finally rang in. I was watching at my parents' house, ans and we all wondered who he was when he finally rang in.

I think we keep getting annoying contestants because they generate discussion and buzz, so I am going to stop commenting about annoying contestants and only mention ones I like. I already know doing that will cut doen on my posting frequency, so it was nice knowing all of you!

That was fun.  Of course Paul had to have some goofy wave at the beginning. It didn't bother me before, but if it's going to be a "thing" now, I'm not climbing aboard that train.

This was my show! French, questions about the moon, and Americana or Landmarks or whatever the official FJ category was. My TS were vis a vis, Alexandria (DD), Arco (a guess), Washington Square (another guess), SF Chronicle (yet another guess), and Apennines, (yup, another guess!). Process of elimination, right? An Italian mountain--what's the Italian mountain range? How many squares are there in NYC? It probably wasn't Times Square. Kicked myself for not knowing Scarlet Witch (Black Widow is not a sorcerer) and Arrow (I know they do "crossover" episodes, but didn't know it was a spinoff). Empire State Building was an instaget. I can't believe they just had the Chrysler Building as a clue yesterday, which solidified my answer. No way was it going to be the Chrysler Building again.

Am I the only person who thinks Amy shouldn't have gotten credit for her answer for Manderley? Paul clearly said Man-da-lay, but it sounded like Amy said Man-da-lee.  I did not hear the "r". It looked like they stopped taping, so they probably reviewed her answer (which I didn't). Which then begs the question of how much leeway do you give someone who, say, is from Boston or England and might just skip over that "r". Good thing it did not affect the outcome.

"Candide", from which Dick Cavett got his theme song.  That would be my dream category, too. US geography & Beatles, also. I kinda miss Those Darn Etruscans.

I just posted about Those Darn Etruscans a week or so ago! I miss it too. I have an app that lets me go back and watch old episodes of Jeopardy, and the categories have definitely changed over the years. Some of them stuck around in content, but most of the names are different.

I said Statue of Liberty because I was thinking of something which had been in NYC for awhile (never mind that it's actually in NJ waters), not something which had recently been built.  When I saw the Empire State Building answer, I felt pretty dumb.

I couldn't drag it out of the recesses of my brain - another "D'OH!" moment for me.  Same with vis-à-vis.  ARCO I knew, though.  Never used AAA, so the diamonds meant nothing to me.
