McManda, are you me???? I've never met another -10, -8.5!  I also wear my contacts all day, every day, except for those few moments after getting up/before going to sleep.  My ophthalmologist yells at me every year, but I really can't see with my glasses.

Haha. I feel you. My ophthalmologist said I was okay, provided that I didn't sleep in mine, and I think that's just because he wants me to take them out every so often. I have daily contacts and always take them out before bed, so my eyes get an 8 hour break each day. I haven't had any problems yet. My -10 eye puts me into "medically necessary" in terms of what my insurance company will pay for (because before -10 corrective vision isn't necessary? I'd beg to differ), so they picked up 95% of my contact costs, which was a nice perk. I also have a slight astigmatism in my right eye, but it's so slight it can be left uncorrected or overcorrected. Either way, that eye is the tiniest bit blurry if I concentrate hard enough on it, but it's usually not a bother. I'd imagine my eyes are only going to get worse (though the -8.5 eye remained unchanged from my last eye exam ... 3 years ago, so who knows). I'd like to eventually explore something more permanent like Lasix (I had a friend do it and I was her designated driver buddy and it seemed easy enough), but I'm young enough that I'm concerned about my vision changing after it's done. I'd have to have them cut into my eyes with a laser and reshape my eyes and then have my vision go bad again. :/ I'd have to do A LOT more research.

Other than Jenny, have we seen any of the Duggar kids with corrective vision? I seem to remember an older girl - Jessa, maybe? - wear glasses on occasion, but I may be making that up. If they homeschool, did they ever get eye/hearing tested? We did that all throughout elementary school. I'm a pretty casual Duggar-viewer, but if they went most of the pre-TLC years uninsured and all the kids were homeschooled, did they just not get any sort of those benchmarked tests? Did they rely on Michelle to notice that one of her kids might be in need? I just don't see any of that going well. I remember being surprised when Jenny got her glasses. I seemed, for whatever reason, un-Duggar-like.

Yes, I've seen Jana, Jill & Jessa on rare occasion wear glasses. The most recent, I think, was when Jill was in Nepal visiting Derek and I think she wore them to the midwifery clinic in Katmandu.

Wow, some of y'all have even worse vision that I have. Mine were both around -9 until I hit age 42, but now that I'm farsighted, my nearsightedness has actually gone down a bit: both eyes are in the -7 range. But now, if I want to read or see anything close, I have two choices: contact lenses PLUS reading glasses, or bifocals. Ah, middle age.

As a fellow middle-ager, I like to refer to my glasses as having "Transitions" lenses. I think this is the politically correct name the eyeglass manufacturers came up with so we don't have to say bifocals or trifocals which really makes you sound ancient. Mine are technically trifocals, bottom part for reading, middle & top for arms length & distance. If I need to see something really up close, like when I needlepoint, I do better with no glasses. I didn't have any trouble adjusting to them but was upset I couldn't wear my contacts any more because of bad allergies & dry eyes. My nearsightedness went down too. Getting old sucks.

I'm sure Boob tried to wrangle up a glasses/contacts deal with the eye dr. It's nice when your eye dr. gives you free samples of eye drops and mine even reduces some of his charges since we don't have great vision insurance & have to pay out of pocket. I'm surprised Boob hasn't written a book about how to wheel & deal the Jim Bob Duggar way. I'm embarrassed for who he is with when we see him trying to get a deal but I guess they are used to it. The episode where him & MEchelle are at the motel for a second honeymoon comes to mind. IIRC the motel clerk wouldn't reduce the room rate but gave them a room with a hot tub. She looked like, I don't believe he just did that.

Yes, hoping for a good deal isn't a sin, but Jim bob carries it to the extreme here, IMO. I think he actually seeks to "defraud the innkeeper", which, isn't THAT a sin? Also, that guy has a very healthy bank account and doesn't need to do that to others...others who are working to keep food on the table, and a server who works for tips as their bread money....it's simply an abuse of his "blessing" in life. That man needs to pass it on and be a generous patron.

For the record on another note: I am a -7.50 & -7.75..started in glasses at 10 years old and I can't see a thing without them. I'm so glad not having to wear those coke bottles for glasses anymore as they now have "high index" lenses, but they cost...I also need the anti reflective coating to help hide the thickness of the lenses, AND I have progressive fields built it too for reading as YES, I am aging too...I don't understand why I only need the glasses for distance, but when I try to read with them ON, I can't see without the magnification. I read and see close up perfectly well and BETTER without the glasses on...Contacts? Forget it; I absolutely need the cheater/readers to see up close for that...So, I usually wear my glasses...contacts for "social" events, once in a while now.

Wouldn't it be nice if TLC showed us Boob paying for something WITHOUT asking for a discount? Something along the lines of him saying "I remember when I had to ask for discounts but now we are able to pay for things without them." They could show him putting some bills in a donation jar at checkout or even *gasp* leaving a large tip at the table. (I'm sure Boob is one of those people my nephew, a waiter, complains about -big group, asks for everything than barely leaves a tip, if any.)

Two words: cheap hillbilly.

I feel like this is going down the off-topic rabbit hole, and I usually try to respect that, but I have to commiserate on the contact prescription... I'm -8.5 -9, I haven't been able to see since 4th grade and my vision it too bad to be considered for lasik... I have blue eyes and often joke that they are just for decoration, as they don't function much. I can't wear my contacts all the time because my eyes dry out and get really irritated... And my friends always just say to wear my glasses, but they don't understand the prescription isn't as strong, and I completely lose peripheral vision.

I do think it's weird that we just saw Jenny at the eye doctor but now never see her in glasses, she's a little young for contacts... But she may just wear them for reading I don't remember if they mentioned that.

He's so damn rude. He expects everyone around him to bow down to him and his family and accommodate them. The Duggars actually told a restaurant they can't sell alcohol while they're there. Who the hell do they think they are. Going out to eat they never appreciate anything. Then Bob was too cheap to pay $5 for ice skating I believe that he tried to lower down the price or get it for free. What a douche.

I don't see anything wrong with asking if there are discounts.

My grandmother did it with everything! Even the grocery store. She taught me when the best time is to ask (lunchmeats: end of day) and what to look for (tiny snags in clothes often get you $3 or so off). And while not rich, she had some wealth.

But I do think JB takes it to extremes.

No kidding? Wow, that's unbelievable. He has absolutely no justification in saying that. I certainly hope the restaurant manager told Boob - politely of course - where to take his business - that night and in the future.

Was this on an episode of the show?  When was this?!  That's insane.  If you want to avoid alcohol that badly, find an establishment that doesn't serve it.  Or eat at home.  All of the Duggars, but JimBob and Michelle especially, really never learned that the world doesn't revolve around them, did they?

I don't remember this happening on the show. Maybe someone has insight into which episode this is.

Michelle ran out of the NICU when Josie was about a week old to protest the city councils decision of whether or not to give a convince store a licen e to sell beer. She spoke at the hearing (as a crazy bitch, I guess) and the store was denied. It wasn't filmed.

Yes, that store was more important than could-die-any-second-micro preemie Josie. Why do you ask.

I'm using an iPad but if you google duggar beer protest you can read all about it.

I wonder if that was embarrassing for any of the kids, to have their parents call ahead to ask them to remove alcohol bottles. Like Joyless Anna or Jinger. Jill would totally be okay with it. Im sure some of the boys would have been embarrassed too, but I can't say because they don't seem to be in the show as much though, do they? Or is that just me being weird....

That is so insane!  Would love to see this episode.

I wonder who the first kid to take a drink will be. Josh guests my vote.

I don't care which one it is.  I just hope they get falling down wasted and dance on a pole.  Voting Jessa or Johanna.

I'm talking voluntarily. And enough to get a buzz or drunk. Amy doesn't count.

LOL- of course voluntarily!  Amy posted having wine on her Instagram.  Of course she had the haters.  So, I agree.  She doesn't count.  I'm sure her Mom and Dad and even Mary have had wine.

Come to think of it, MEchelle probably had a taste of some Boones Farm in her 'wild days'… of course before she 'met the lord'.

I wonder how they all didn't go in to convulsions at that governor's inaugural banquet with 2 wine bottles at their table? That type of behavior is ridiculous. They never cease to show their lack of class, real dignity and taste. They truly are "barefoot and backyard kind of people",and NOT in the "good way", folks. They are the uneducated ones for sure.

I'm sure hoping she has friends but no doubt Boob has control who she sees &when. ("When you finish that load of laundry, then you can go out.") Joking aside, it would be nice if she could travel for a month with friends, not the circus. I'm sure there's a Senior Center in their area she could be a part of. On the old episode when she goes to the Gothard Widow's Lunch, she was with friends. What a shame if she's limiting her life by being a part of Boob's.

Oh my gosh! There is a Gothard Widow's Lunch! If that don't beat all. I missed that. I hope she has a lovely circle of friends -- widows or not. Though perhaps in Gothard circles widows must keep to themselves and not be upsetting the married folk.

Jill would have helped remove the bottles.

I don't know if they said where the luncheon was held, but Cross Church is a good guess. Like I posted before, Gothard was there & greeted Grandma.

Some of the older daughters admitted that they had tasted alcohol by "accident." Josh has probably already had a few beers.

I could see Josh having a beer with dinner on a regular basis. Anna might have freaked out at first, because Jesus only drank grape juice, as per Pa Keller. But the Smuggs have gotten a bit more worldly since moving.

I'd also like to imagine that Grandma Mary has a secret bottle of vodka hidden in her room or the laundry room (it's not like J'chelle is ever in the laundry room anyway) and after particularly difficult day, she invites Jana to her room and they have a couple of drinks and make fun of J'chelle and Boob.

Oh, those bottles of wine had me LMAO! How DARE those Arkansas Republicans...in Duggarland, all Republicans are teetotalers.

As for drinking voluntarily, Boob admits he tried beer, but of course he spat it out.

[sarcasm font] I'll bet he did.... LOL. If Boob tried beer the way most of us first did, at a party or athletic event or something BEFORE we were of age, with a lot of other kids standing around, he not only swallowed his first sip but probably even finished the can - and maybe even said he liked it. I'll never believe he spit it out, unless it can be confirmed that it was all part of some odd Gothard "teaching" moment.

  • Love 1

What's so bad about drinking? If the Duggars don't want to drink fine but don't ruin it for everyone else

This is my problem with MUCH of what the Duggar's believe.  They think EVERYONE should do as they do.

Mitt Romney was an excellent example on the no drinking. He just had a glass of water when everyone else had wine.

My recollection of them having the staff remove the booze bottles came from a poster on TWOP or FJ. It was the episode where they all went skiing with the Jeubs. The poster said that she was a member of the staff at the restaurant.

It is my guess that JD sneaks over to his house a lot and plays Call to Duty and downs a six-pack of CoorsLite and eats Cheetos while there.

  • Love 2

They read that here, first, from moi. :D I was pretty quick to mention the odd behavior going on during last week's Bates episode. They're a year apart in age, and Joe will hopefully stay in school and get a degree before he thinks about marriage. My only reservation is that Tori said she wants an outgoing guy, and Joe has never shown an outgoing side in 10 years of being filmed. Of the older kids, from Jed/Jer on up, I'd say that he has been the most reserved in terms of allowing the audience to learn anything about him. Even the episodes that focused on this stay at ALERT indoctrination camp just focused on what he did there (the stuff they can talk about on TV), not who he was. He may well be a derp type in the mold of JD, but we haven't even seen that.

  • Love 2

Well, how about this....announce that Joe is in college to distract us from the fact that Josiah is ALSO going to college. In fact, joe's really just there as Josiah's chaperone. This keeps the media heat away from Josiah and Tori's courtship, explains where on earth Josish had been the whole season, AAASNNNNDD (as Anna herself might say) finally makes sense, since I never thought Joseph we as college material, but Josiah certainly is.

It's like Jessa/Jill courtship, only it's the boys and college!

I dunno. Josiah accompanied Lawson and Nathan Bates to the Philippines for a month during this semester (they left sometime in February; Lawson posted a LOT during the first week or two). I don't think they would allow someone who just enrolled in January to take off a month later.

I know Nathan Bates goes to Clown College (or used to), but maybe he only goes one semester a year (they went to the Philippines last year as well). It's possible he dropped out. At any rate, I don't think Josiah accompanied Joe to Crown.

eta: Keep in mind that this season was filmed before Joe left for school, yet we aren't seeing HIM this season, either. We only saw JD because it was his turn for Michelle to have an interaction. Also, Josiah was still at ALERT through the end of September, so he missed that block of filming. TBH, I don't want to see and hear what they did to Josiah at indoctrination camp; I think they really did a number on him. :/
