I hate to defend Derick, but I was friends with one of the people who was Sparty at my alma mater. It is a hard gig. The mascot program is no joke. Those who played Sparty had a regular conditioning and training program. One handed push-ups were a must, because it is somewhat of a signature Sparty move. Plus it is hot in the suit. I forgot how much the suit weighs, but it was heavy. Sparty is in pretty high demand. It is not just game days, he attends weddings, birthdays, hospitals and a lot of other events. My friend even attended some funerals as Sparty. At MSU they are suppose to keep it a secret that they are the mascot. We happened to figure it out because he was missing at tailgates, games and traveled for some away games. Sparty usually reveals themselves at graduation by wearing his boots with their cap and gown. I am just assuming that Derick's Pistol Pete gig was as rigorous as MSU's Sparty. It may or may not have been.

Hello, fellow Spartan!

Alright, I'll give the book a pass since it was from the boys' grandmother. It was nice of Jill to post the photo as sort of a thank you to Cathy.

However, I still stand by my opinion that Derick needs to quit clinging on to the past like that. Yes, it's a way to connect with his deceased father, but it seems to be more than that. He could accomplish more if he mentally quit living in his former "glory days" and spent that mental and emotional energy into being productive now and staying committed to a job.

No snark on Pistol Pete reminiscing, especially since it is multi-generational with the Dillards. However, there is a part of me that Derick is still stuck on his college days, as he is a perpetual student.

That picture, with Jill wearing a skirt reminiscent of Gothard days, reminded me that Jill did not switch to pants right away after marrying Derick. I wonder what made her decide to wear pants? IIRC, I think we first started noticing pants after Sam was born and after they were off the show.

Jill did not start wearing pants until after Jinger had done so.

But not THE OSU

No definitely not THE OSU which is my alma mater x 2.  Brutus Buckeye, our mascot, is also a big deal and in demand for various social events.  As I recall, the students playing Brutus get a cut of the profits from the paying gigs and many of them depend on the money to help pay for school since being the mascot takes up a lot of time during the football season and the students playing Brutus would not have time for a job.

Brutus, like many mascots, wears a heavy headpiece.  And, he has to do a lot of cheerleading stunts including pushups, trampoline tricks and other gymnastic/cheerleading type moves.  If Derick had to do that stuff as Pistol Pete, it was hard work and he deserves credit.

Pistol Pete is just the Great Value version of the Masked Rider. (And yes, Raider Red must then be the Up & Up version of Pistol Pete but we don’t need to get into that.)

I actually think it’s kind of cool that Derrick got to have that role at his alma mater. It’s easy to stay connected to your university and identify as an alum when it’s a big sports school and the colors/logo/mascot have a lot of exposure. Or, say, when your former QB-turned-head coach is hot AF and failed his way up to an NFL head coaching gig or your more recent former QB is the NFL MVP and on the cover of Madden. Just throwing those out as some totally arbitrary examples. There weren’t many from OSU so I just happened to choose another Big 12 school. 😎👆🏻

What makes me sad about that Pistol Pete photo is how Israel, even as an only child, is already clearly hoping for a crumb of attention from Jill.  I can't believe she didn't pick him up and hold him so he could be in the picture too. I know he's technically in it, but that grip Jill has on the stroller is keeping Izzy out of the group. Body language is so telling!

Sparty's not scary like Pistol Pete, so I can see why that mascot would be in high demand. My alma mater's Oski is probably the least intimidating mascot of all. He wears a letterman's sweater from the mid-20th century. Real scary! 😁

Go Bears!! My alma mater too 😁

Jill mentioned in the comments that Derelict still has that gagging issue. She says he has it in the morning, all on its own, and that exercise seems to exacerbate it (not in those words, of course).

He really needs to see a doctor not named Fedosky.

Probably, but he looks more athletic running than Jock JerJer does playing golf.😁😁

I'm not entirely sure about any type of stunting but this informative little clip here, says the head weighs 45lbs.

Also discusses origin of Pistol Pete and says the Pete featured put on the costume an estimated "500 times a year".

I mean, okay, but that's an average of ~1.3 times per DAY. I find that hard to believe, considering that the are students and presumably have to be in class. And studying.

Are these Pete appearances a 10 minute event where they could sqeeze them between classes? (Note: I didn't watch the video and my alma mater doesn't have a live action mascot.)

According to the Wiki, there's at least 2 Pistol Pete mascots each year to divide up the appearances and duties.

And Deertick doing gymnastics and push ups?  I can't believe he did anything acrobatic or more energetic than waving.  Mean, ornery Cowboy characters don't do all that sissy stuff.

And didn't he get passed over his first year, or 2?  He definitely wasn't Pete all 4 years he was there.

I wonder if he went to the reunion last year?  As someone formerly on TV, you'd think they'd have interviewed him as a "celebrity".

He was PP his final two years. He was in the matching band for at least his freshman year.

PP waves guns around. Even in the holsters, they're at risk of falling out if any acrobatics are called for. And with that giant head, I can't see PP doing one armed pushups or tricks off a trampoline.

eta: I'm pretty sure that he attended the reunion.

I'm thinking the root issue is psychological and not physical.  Of course I don't know if he has seen a GI specialist.  Elimination diets like those listed make me think they are trying to solve this on their own.

I had an issue with gagging several years ago, and mine was definitely stress-related. I could easily see this being a psychosomatic thing of his. I wonder when it started. I bet money it was right around the time the scandal broke or at another stressful period in their life. I'd be surprised if it existed before his marriage.

  • Love 9

My bets are on the gagging being psychological too.

I mean he's dealing with:

- the death of his father at a fairly young age

- his mother's cancer battle

- marrying a Z-List reality "star" who has an equal number of haters than fans

- the scandals with said family

- a botched oral surgery

- whatever went on in CA

- Not supporting a family with two small kids and possibly more on the way in the future

- Full time law school

Yeah I'd be doing more than gagging.

Sam looks like he has a load in his pants.

I'm hoping Sam's droopy drawers were just wet from playing in the water.  I'm sure he has diaper rash from whatever the cause & being in them for awhile.

What makes me mad & sad  is that they didn't take a few minutes to change him & put him in fresh clothes after the water play & before their run/walk.

I give Jill a lot of shit about her photos, but at least she is looking at the camera.  I’ve been trying to get a good snap of my dog and everytime I get out the camera, so looks away. I tried to tell her that her instagram fans want to see her face, but it doesn’t move her 😂

Actually, she’s being polite in dogspeak. Bless her for not being a famehound.

Now back to the Dillards who really are...

The video/various articles said that Pete gets asked to show up at alumni wedding receptions, parties, I want to say even the occasional funeral.  The appearance fee charged is $100.  There was no word as to how the fee was divvied up (i.e., did Derick get a portion or is it 100% to the school); and OSU was/is also cagey about whether or not the role comes with a scholarship (some mascots do).  Some schools make their mascots show up for every single team sporting event, which could run to a considerable amount of events including a lot of weekend work, I should think.  Some mascots also have to accompany the cheerleaders to cheer competitions.

As for the duration, OSU also has a list of the individuals who were Petes, and most seem to have done it for no more than 2 years.  Derick's father only did 2 years.  The exception was some doughty guy in the early 1970's who showed up 4 years running.  The head is 1950's-era fiberglas, thus the extreme weight. 🙂
