and there are different types of ways that missions are funded. I know quite a few missionaries that keep homes here because they live in inexpensive areas and have family nearby that allow them to do so. There isn't "one way" to be a missionary.

I realize that people may have a problem philosophically with what Jill and Derick are doing. Ok, we get it. But so far they aren't doing anything that differently than thousands of other missionaries who have have gone before them and who are working now.

I agree. The lack of transparency equates a lack of accountability, and they appear to want people to blindly give money because they're fans of the show and it's up to them how they spend it. That's not typically how people go about raising support for missions, lol. If nothing else, it is consistent with how the Duggars roll.

I don't really think this missionary job is what Derick had in mind when it came to serving "overseas."  This seems to principally be an administrative job, managing the vacationing missionaries that come to town to paint fingernails and convert the heathens.

 

Since someone upthread stated that the summer missionary season is ending it will be interesting to see what they do.  If they stay on, without having to manage visitors, maybe they will actually be able to do what they want, and spend time with the locals.  I am hoping that they have that opportunity to work on their own with the community.  That is when Jill will find out if she is meant for this, or not.  And at some point won't they report to their supporters what they have been doing?  I get newsletters from a medical mission I support updating me on what is happening, and I would think the same would be expected of them.  Especially if they want donations.

There are all kinds of missions, but Christ's own words before he departed tells his believers to go into all the world and share the good news of the gospel. That's not a very popular message these days and many Christians have made a mess in their attempts, but the truth is this: what compels believers to step out of their comfort zone and share the gospel comes from God and that's a calling. Men and women all over the globe have been obeying Christ's mandate for more than 2,000 years. It might not be a popular topic on this board, but for many Christians it's their life purpose, as what appears to be the case for Derick and Jill.

I am always supportive of missionaries because -- while I'm not called -- I find it fascinating. I have friends doing so many things especially in farming technology through plans like the Heifer Project. It wasn't until I read and heard about the Duggar concept that I feared there was so much negative even today. Sad.

I wonder if Jill is paying for JB and Michelle's visit. This will probably be one of the first trips he has paid for in a while. I don't think he is in any financial distress, but it wouldn't surprise me to find he wants the mission donations to pay his way.

I love the Heifer Project and other organizations like them! My favorite is the Dalit Freedom Network. These are so very worthwhile and do quite a good job raising money, helping to make a substantial difference by empowering those who are otherwise without hope and personal freedom, along with bringing awareness to their plight.

Oh dear, Derick really isn't a mustache guy, is he? But then my own personal view is - few men are. IMO, not a lot of guys can successfully rock the mustache-only look. I like a clean-shaven face or a full beard. No goatee only, no Van Dyke only. Yuck. And the beard should not be thick and shaggy, or long and wispy either. But something well-trimmed and very English professorish-looking. Also needed, a tweed jacket with elbow patches. :>)

 

PS - the mustache does age Derick about 10 years though...

It seems strange that he's having work done presumably to bring his jaws into alignment, but now it looks as if the bottom half of his face isn't in line with the top half. Is that usual with this kind of surgery? Cause ... yeeps. Maybe he's thinking the big Tony-Orlando mustache will camouflage his current Picasso-woulda-loved-it look?

I don't have any kids, but my sister has 3 and I don't recall any of them being able to visually focus and stare at a camera from 6-7 feet away at 4 months old. When you breast feed you get really big, but when your done breast feeding they usually return close to their former size.  When you're pregnant they begin to grow larger.  Now if Jill keeps getting pregnant/breast feeding non stop then she will probably stay large.

My little guy, when he was very little, was very aware and alert even before 4 months of age so I don't think that's too unusual.

I think they're both looking much more relaxed than they did before they left. And it looks as if Jill has dropped a good bit of what was left of the baby weight. That stache though has got to go ;)

I never found Derick attractive, but I don't really feel comfortable making fun of someone's appearance. Especially since with these people there are literally hundreds of other reasons to make fun of them. I actually think Derick and Jill look happier where they are than they ever did in America. It's in the eyes; in all the photos they took in Murica they had "photo crazy eyes." You know, that look you get in your eyes when you have to smile in a photo but aren't actually happy. Their eyes look happier wherever they are now. I have no idea why, but I'd speculate it has something to do with being away from the Duggars.

 

I do agree about the mustache but I've only met one man in my life who can pull off a mustache. I'm not sure I'll ever meet another.

Probably relaxed from all that sweet yesca he's smoking.  It's the only explanation for the facial hair.

He was huge at birth. They did a Caesarian delivery because he was transverse breech, but she probably would have ended up with a uni-hole/cloaca if she delivered vaginaly.

I'm not a huge fan of the moustache, but I don't think it's terrible either. It looks OK.  I'm going to be charitable for once, though, and say a big GOOD FOR YOU, DILLARDS for trying something new (after all, it's only hair!)  I'd much rather have them be overseas than stuck at home, and like all 20-somethings, try new things, some of which they'll stick to, and some of which they won't.

 

I still find their religious beliefs beyond horriying, and the conversion of Christians to Christianity completely ridiculous, but isn't this what a lot of people wanted Derick to do?  Get Jill away from her fucked up family, and try new things, see new people, eat new food, experience new languages, create their own family dynamic, etc?  If the moustache is symbolic of that, then I'm pro-moustache. (Yes, I'm making the mo' a symbol of resistance against the Duggars)
