Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events

It's amazing how many comments got past that ministry on the live stream, and it was especially funny when they ever-so-seriously responded!  "Bella" was a hoot, as were so many others.

My only concern is signing up for their live chat and having it connected to my IP address.  Who knows how the power of the Lord might purpose to find who we are, or - at the very least - to bomb us with holy e-mails (Batman)?   That kind of spam I don't need.

So no Joshie sightings.  Damn.  Not sure how many Friday evenings will be worth giving up just for a glimpse.

Thanks for the chuckles!

Who is Cisco?

Cisco is one of the half-time dudes. He actually seems really sweet and earnest. Bless his heart, he is a very big guy and he explained that he has a food addiction.

The only way I'd be able to spot Josh among all the other balding, puffy white guys in polo shirts would be if he actually came up to the microphone. Ryan/Edward said the inmates can remain anonymous if they want to.

I click on that link and I get an RU header and nothing else. I also tried to sign up for that slack thing and got confused when they wanted me to create a team name. How do you sign up and join an existing group?

To sign into the Slack thing, QF, you need to PM an email address to CofCinci and she can set you up.

Same Slack next week and every week until Josh is free!  If you want to join the fun, just message your email to me and follow the slack.  Too bad Josh gets sent off into groups and misses the Cisco and Ryan fun.  BTW, I'm going to have 2 beers today -- hope it doesn't lead me to a DUI like Ryan.

Another hilarious comment came from Famy Jordan who was trying to pick up Ryan, she said "I'm married but would happily get an annulment." Still laughing about it. Who ever Famy was out yourself! If you don't want to do it publicly than PM me. lol

Every time I see the name "Cisco", all I can think of is The Cisco Kid...and that makes me want to give Ryan the nickname "Pancho".

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042093/

The Cisco Kid and his English-mangling sidekick Pancho travel the old west in the grand tradition of the Lone Ranger, righting wrongs and fighting injustice wherever they find it.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh Cisco, Ohhhhhhhhhhh Pancho

(or is "Pancho" being reserved for Joshie?)

Wow. That's possibly the filthiest comment ever made on these boards...

I consider it an art form.  I'll let myself out.

I believe you need to refer to those beers as "two cans of alcohol".  I am worried for you.  What was the progression?  Two cans one week.  Two cans the next week.  Two cans the third week.  Suddenly were talking cocaine.  Maybe that's what happened with Josh.  Week one, looked at a bare knee.  Week two, looked at a bare knee.  Week three, looked at a bare knee.  Suddenly he is having not-fully-consensual rough sex with hookers.

Well, I wonder when Josh and Anna will use their all expense paid coupon for their marriage retreat. Remember, JimChelle gave them the coupon when Josh and Anna returned from California where Josh showed off his flying trapeze skills? I wonder if JimChelle sensed that the marriage needed help?

So I'm on Cafe Mom reading a post about - guess what - a kid who molested his sister and a "supposed" relative (I say supposed because the poster is anonymous and we have a lot of trolls on that site) was asking whether the family should have handled it or the police because the daughter got the police involved even though the parents wanted to just punish the son with not outside involvement.  The first response to the post said:  "So you're mad the family wasn't able to Josh Duggar the kid".

And I thought wow, that's going to become a thing now, like how they say kid actors that grew up hot "Neville Longbottomed".  Because you know if one person is saying it dozens more are too- our little Joshie is going to become part of pop culture slang and not in a good way.

BTW - The family in the post really did try to handle it like the Duggars, link to the CM post site in case you're wondering.

Going back a few scandals -- what ever happened with the money Josh and Anna owed the IRS? Did they pay it? Enter a payment plan? Get a check from JB to pay it?

From what we've seen of JB, I can't imagine him paying Josh's IRS debt. JB most likely schooled Josh to put X amount of money aside for taxes and to not overspend.

I can actually imagine JB paying it. Not because he's an understanding dad who wants to help his son out of a jam, but because it makes him look stupid for acting like a "Buy Used, Save the Difference" financial guru working through that booklet with Derrick when -- surprise! -- his own son can't manage his money.

LMAO and I have tears streaming down my face. I am loving the poster names! Oh look Famy Jordan showed up and Vivid star. Totally hilarious!

I was Vivid Star.  But I am afraid a suggestive name was all I had to offer last night.  It was CHURCH!  I was afraid to misbehave.  I tried to make them explain to me how their program is different from AA, but I got nowhere.   Halfway through the program I got the feeling the RU people were well aware we were all a bunch of ball busters, but they tolerated the shenanigans in the belief they might be able to bring maybe at least one of our evil lost souls to The Lord.  hahah  Good luck with that, RU.

Cisco and Ryan were actually halfway decent to listen to in terms of being able to hold the attention of the audience.  I can picture Josh Duggar standing there with them, giving his testimony ... they'd be a nice trifecta: drugs/alcohol, food, and porn/sex.  They could work the whole podcast, speaking engagement, book thing, and appear on all the religious shows as the voice of authority on how religion can cure addiction.  Together, they could set the cause of healing back decades.  Maybe even centuries.

I still think this is more of a segue into a future as a professional "former addict" for Josh than real rehab.  That is if he is actually there at all.  Which I am not so sure of.

If Josh is not able to participate in one of the main facets of their program to overcome addiction, then what are his chances of recovery (if he is even there).  My co-workers husband ran a support group for sexual addition/compulsion/dysfunction, etc., and group talk was a huge part of their treatment.  But alas, Josh is doomed to sit and pray away the sin of pornography and bottle it up inside, which he will then unleash on a myriad of unsuspecting prostitutes in six months.

I don't think his presence was ever confirmed. During the first church service, I believe some thought they spotted him but there was never a positive ID as I recall.

He must be WAY underground - perhaps literally. Dungeons come to mind.

He may be swimming with the Wisdom Booklets.

I think even if Josh was able to participate in every aspect of this program, the likelihood of him never seeking out an affair or sex from someone other Anna would be slim-to-none. I think one of the root issues for Josh to figure out would be - where does this behavior come from? He would really benefit from talking to a licensed therapist to explore what led to his actions (I'm not just talking about his childhood... I'm talking about his relationship with Anna, his ideas of marriage, sex, etc.) and talk about realistic ways to prevent himself from acting upon his impulses. I think that's one of the huge benefits of therapy. The point is that the psychologist would hopefully create building blocks for you to, when you're done with therapy, be able to deal with your issues on your own, should the issue ever come up again. This goes for all mental health issues. If you can help clients with depression through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the next time they start sinking into a depression, they know how to identify their negative thoughts, they know how to work through those thoughts, which helps them overcome a severe episode (sometimes, this obviously doesn't work for everyone, but no treatments have 100% efficacy).

If Josh was actually seeking help like this, he might be able to go home and work on his relationship with Anna. When I asked RU about addiction on Friday night, they basically said something along the lines of addictions are things that affect your heart, so by seeking God he can help your heart (very loose quote... but it was something about focusing on the heart and on God). Josh can "pray away" his issues - by himself and with others - for as long as he's at RU, but the fact of the matter is that when he goes home (from wherever he currently is), the environment will be totally different. If no one's taught him how to work through his issues in all environments and how to identify the warning signs, he's just going to sink back into his past lifestyle, because that's the easiest thing to do. We all know Josh doesn't like hard work...

A related side note: I think Ryan is the perfect example of that. He was sooooooo sneaky! He talked about all the drugs he was into, sneaking around when he was at treatment, etc. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he was still doing all (or some) of that stuff, still. Either that, or he realized that literally the only way he would ever not be able to regress into addiction is staying at RU. Probably because no one taught him how to deal with his substance addiction when faced with the "outside world." He might as well invest all his time and energy into RU, because as soon as he gets a job somewhere else in Illinois (or any other state), he would have a good chance of "picking up" another DUI.

I suspect that a rehab run on Gothardite principles is not the place for Josh to develop agency when it comes to acting out sexual urges. Hell, even NAMBLA acknowledges that they're doing what they do because they want to do it. Gothard hands out educational materials saying that infants in diapers can lure men into sin by immodestly having genitals in the general area that's covered in waste.

Not only are these people not going to give him building blocks, one of their purposes is to argue them away if he somehow manages to pray them into place by himself.

Josh may talk a good game about cuddling and bubble baths, but it doesn't surprise me that he's rough with his partners. The whole thing is clearly all their fault.

I'm sticking with the theory that Josh is a man who likes to look at porn and was looking for a hook-up outside of his marriage, not unlike a zillion guys out there. Many men have been caught in similar situations and were able to reconcile their marriage or gone on to be in monogamous relationships.

IMHO, by M & JB announcing that Josh is seeking treatment, they are taking the emphasis off the fact that their son screwed up, and placing it on Satan, and in a sense making Josh appear to be a victim.

I don't think Josh likes women.  Don't get me wrong, he may love his wife, his mother and his sisters, but I think he just doesn't like them.  He isn't gay.  Gay men don't dislike women, they're just not attracted to them sexually.  I've known guys like him before and I've also known women who don't like men.  They tend to get married and treat their spouses badly.  I'm not sure you could pin the reason for this on any one factor, I think it's a part of their personality just like how some people have a natural dislike of certain foods or dogs or cats.

If he would get some actual counseling, he could recognize the problem and learn coping skills.  He probably could develop some empathy once he learned to see women as thinking, feeling humans.  But we all know the likelihood of that happening.  Legitimate counseling might contradict his religious upbringing, and getting his head on straight might lead to him putting a ton of distance between himself and his dysfunctional family.

Since we see the service from the back and the participants are sitting at the sides of the church, he would be hard to distinguish from a sea of backs of heads.

The camera is usually focused on the front of the room.  During the breakout sessions, they show additional speakers who are in a separate room.  so Josh, that sly boots, has not been clearly identified in the group of guys in ill-fitting polo shirts or plaid.

A related side note: I think Ryan is the perfect example of that. He was sooooooo sneaky! Ryan's story and even Cisco's do show that they seem to be only able to function in the way they want to while they are at RU.  So they are not learning skills to help them when they are outside.  Of course RU does offer their programs as at home materials, but I doubt there is much success.  There's an old joke about rehab that they can claim really high cure rates because while you're there, you're not using.  So the only people not cured are the ones who sneak in drugs or bail on the program.  The unfortunate thing is a place to dry out or to avoid the things that tempt you is not the same as treatment.  While I like to snark about all of this, it is ultimately very sad.

I agree that many people have cheated and been able to rebuild their primary relationships.  If this was Josh's only sin in the camp, I would agree with you.  But he also molested his sisters and another young girl.  He needs real help.  If nothing else, he needs to learn about respect and consent.

MonicaM nailed it.  Josh does not like women.  He does not like or respect them as people.  He is sexually attracted to them, but he doesn't like them.  Nor does he seem to acknowledge them as equals.  If anything he has been raised to resent women for being such temptresses that they lead him into sin.

I got the same vibe from Ryan. His "testimony" was a weird combo of downplaying what he did and shame-bragging. What he glossed over were the many time he repented and got right with Jesus before falling back into bigger and better sins. If that guy isn't currently dabbling in substance use, he will be soon...I'd bet on it. The whole organization is a bunch of users engaging in mass delusion, pretending they can DROWN OUT the problem by bludgeoning themselves with bible-speak.

I agree. Josh has had the buzzwords and catchphrases drilled into him from childhood. He can easily fake being reformed.

Really good observation.

In addition, I rather think that Josh doesn't actually like anyone -- any adults, at any rate; he has seemed to like his kids. But when it comes to his peers and other adults, I think he probably walks around looking at everyone through a haze of buried anger and resentments, contempt and arrogance mixed in with insecurities and fears that he's inferior. He doesn't seem to have any friends, and it's often been remarked that there doesn't seem to be much if any warmth or camaraderie between himself and his siblings, of either gender. An awful lot of things get in the way of Josh having healthy relationships, or even any relationships, I expect. And then when you add to that the clear issues with women -- he's pretty much a mess. I wish he lived in an environment where getting thoughtful help to work through your issues wasn't considered a devilish activity. Instead, he's a very brittle personality living in a situation where no real help is allowed.

I don't think Josh or any of the Duggar children know how to like, feel or think much of anything.   They have limited vocabulary as another poster noted filled with buzzwords, Gothard spin and Bible quotes.

None of them seem creative or show any spur of the moment action.   Their thoughts have been so limited and most imagination has been ruled as evil which must be confessed.

As for this rehab attempt I am sure their success rate is 0 for all the reasons we have already listed.  Further, the people running it I agree are probably still very deep into their addictions and these places are just a way to fund it and have other people clean up after them.   I am sure the participants learn a whole lot of new ways to further their own problems, which is typical of most rehabs.

Without the molestation and adultery, Josh's life was impossible to manage anyway with so many restrictions that make it impossible to live a normal life.

There are some nice pictures of Amy's wedding on the Pickles and Hairspray FB page.

There is one with Amy and all the girls.  And there is Anna, giving her stupid "thumbs up" sign.

Somebody said that Josh was at the wedding?  Is he on "vacation" also?
