Surprise!  The liver transplant repaired Lulu's brain!

Surprisingly, it kind of does! Not coma to awake obviously, but many people with failing livers have hepatic encephalopathy - basically brain injury from the toxins in the blood that can't be filtered by the damaged liver.

My dad had his transplant and was a completely different person in 36 hours. It was insane.

Maybe Michael will blackmail Drew into stepping down from congress and will get appointed to his seat.

I wonder who they’ll try to get to fill the role, since he’s a pretty central character. Any late 30’s leading men seem bored? Maybe they can lure Scott Clifton back to play a different Quartermaine.

I hate Michael and I think that CD's acting has been on the decline for years. I'm not sorry or sad to see him go. As far as the character goes, it's not like they can't ask Robert Adamson to take over the role.

Yeah I was thinking the same, but I’d also like to see him recast with someone who is more of a leading man. As we’ve discussed here before, the 30 something set should be leading the show into whatever future it has, and like it or not, Michael is at the forefront of that group. The character needs more gravitas.

Not particularly a fan of the character, and I don't have feelings one way or another about CD's work.   But I have felt for CD having to play what is essentially the same story, over and over.  Can't imagine that does much to assuage an actor's thirst for creativity.   Maybe a more talented one could have made each story feel different, but I primarily fault the writers, who couldn't seem to avoid a stereotype when one was available, and who shied away from sustaining any real strife for the character.

If Michael is going off canvas for a while, I hope it's because his coverup regarding Jagger's murder is discovered.

As long as the recast isn’t another Kristina/KM debacle, I’m willing to accept a new Michael, hopefully one with a bit more maturity and on screen presence.  With his ties to three major families and being the son of two of the main characters, you’d think that many out of work soap and prime time actors would want the opportunity to play this character.

Allegedly it is as I suspected, the result of the standard FV take it or leave it paycut deal he's very often pulled at GH or OLTL, but that's just the rumor mill.

Frank is now on Twitter lamenting Chad's exit 'in the new year' and saying they will not recast which, ugh. Why recast a vital younger character who is central to a core family when you can hold the role for somnambulant Chad when he's ready to return for a buck fifty? Idiotic.

CD is hardly in a position to refuse a pay cut. It’s not like he’s in high demand elsewhere or he’d have left long ago. It’s ridiculous to not recast but anything that gets him off my screen is okay with me. Are they just going to send him, Willow and family off into the sunset to start a new life together? There’s no way Michael leaves his kids behind while Willow and Drew play hide the salami, and Willow serves absolutely no purpose without Michael. Yeah she’s Nina’s daughter but we all know she’ll turn her back on Nina when she learns mommy has been sleeping with Drew.

I suppose one benefit of them all leaving is it frees up the gate house for Jason and Danny. Or for Dante,Lulu and Rocco.

It's the first thing I thought.  He decided to leave it.  But Frank announcing no plans to recast is insane.  All of this really makes me wonder how long GH has left.

I don't know what CD's professional plans are, but maybe we'll get an interim Michael until CD decides that sleepwalking through GH is better than collecting unemployment.

I suspect Frank probably considers Chad the only Michael after fourteen years and is gambling he will come crawling back for more autopilot storytelling to give more apathetic performances soon enough.

I'd wipe the slate and recast completely, but GH refuses to let go of anyone or anything deadweight unless FV's nose gets out of joint. They hate rocking the boat.

Yeah, as much as I dislike Michael, he's not a character you can really have off screen for long. He's basically been the lead in that age group for a long time, and he's a Q, Spencer, and Corinthos. Not to mention that his character has so much going on right now.  Just recast him. Sure, he's been in the role a long time, but he's not some irreplaceable icon.

There must be a OLTL pet left for FV to slip into the role. Which was the least annoying Ford brother?

he hasn't used Eddie Alderson over on GH yet, has he?

Eddie isn’t acting anymore since his cancer diagnosiS. Pretty sure he’s clear now and recently got married. NGL I would kill for ES or RSW to pop up, although I have no idea where they’d fit in. I guess RSW could be the new police chief of even the DA. And maybe ES could be one of Tracy’s society maven friends. Or the head of a  charity. 🤷‍♀️

For the non-OLTL folks, ES = Victoria Lord (Erica Slezak) and RSW = Bo Buchanan (Robert S. Woods).  I could see ES as an Amanda Barrington type in a short run but honestly, Laura, Tracy and Stella have the older matriarchal characters filled. And the DA and Police Commisioner are kind of dead-ends, filled by any kind of LEO-type character that needs a backburner role.

It might be fun to see nunuLulu go to Llanview on a story. The Pine Valley/Jackson Montgomery thing was a letdown but you'd think FV could do better with Llanview.

Anyone else thinking the decision not to recast CD is due to Maurice Bernard not wanting him recast? That's why Morgan has remained "dead" for so many years, right?

I can't stand CD's Michael, but the character has so many connections it seems ridiculous not to recast him. He's connected to so many people in PC that it seems the character would be key.

If there ever was a person who needed to be shown the door.

I remember CD saying a few years ago how MB ignored him for a while after he was cast as Michael.

This BS is toxic.

I truly believe it would transform the show for the better and give it new life to retire Sonny.

I suspect Maurice has cost the show a lot over the years in ways we don’t know too.

As for Chad, I hope he finds lasting fulfillment elsewhere.

Well, that's it. I'm out. Without Kelly Monaco and Chad Duell, GH simply makes no sense.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Kidding/parody of reactions I've seen in other places.

I wish Duell well. He had his moments, and I thought he was a good-looking guy who did bring a certain cool strength to the character in Michael's less boring stretches. But with his mother and adoptive father sucking up all the oxygen, as if time had stood still since Michael was engrossed in Africa books in 1998, the character in CD's time became a straitjacket a Tony-award-winning young stage great wouldn't have been able to wriggle out of. Also, Duell's "coolness," an asset for some things, had the effect of dulling interest in romantic pairing after pairing.

I suspect Michael will have a disappearance of contrivance (please, soap gods, nothing that will necessitate a show funeral/mourning) and we'll see him back eventually, played by...someone. As others have said, he's just too connected to be gone long term, especially with Morgan still out of the picture.

I am moderately interested to see how this plays out.

Yeah I agree with no recast.  These storylines can be wrapped up relatively quickly, and the show overall does not require the Michael character to function in my view.

But who are the male leads who can fill the void? Chase is too nice. Cody is too boring. Lucky, maybe, if JJ decides to stick around. Jason is getting to old to carry these stories, despite the show’s best efforts to shoehorn him into every storyline.

I don't miss Morgan at all. He was dumb and whiny. (Admittedly, that describes a lot of the male characters.) The show was tentatively trying for a Jason/AJ redux with Michael and Morgan, but neither CD nor BC were charismatic enough for that, IMO, and of course the unimaginative writing didn't help.

And, a possible UO, I'm not a huge fan of repeating character dynamics with the next generation. Different writers, different actors, different characters. Most of the time the iteration is always weaker and less compelling.

The last time I remember liking Michael was when he tried to take Avery away from Sonny after he found out Sonny killed AJ.  I still remember him telling little baby Avery “I think I’ll call you…(look of death at Sonny and Carly)....AJ”.  I mean that was a thing of beauty.  But of course it couldn’t last, and eventually he became the worst apologist of them all.

I totally agree, and that’s why I don’t mind them shelving the character for a while. Michael SHOULD be essential to the canvas, but as written he’s just a dull whiny oxygen suck. CD’s acting did nothing to elevate the situation, but it’s been a long time since the character served any real purpose.

I just hope this doesn’t mean that the Star-Crossed Love Story of Willow and Drew moves front and center. Millow Vanillow may have put me to sleep, but Drillow makes me choke on my own vomit.
