The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

It's interesting that this story was tops on the People site this morning and as of right now, it seems to have disappeared completely.

People Magazine must be working with the Duggars. Exclusive out by Monday?

For everyone's sake (especially Anna)  I hope this is it for Josh.  If he has any other skeletons left in his closet, I would hope he would man up and confess now.  I'm in the camp that suspects more is to come, but if there were ever a time to get it out in the open, now is the time.  He should have done it when the molesting story came out, but he's a coward and took the easy way out.  Instead of putting everyone through the media microscope once, his family went through it twice.  I won't rehash who was to blame the first time.  That horse has been beat to death and then some.  But take the heat for whatever and just get it over with.  Josh has hurt his wife and children deeply and to do it twice is beyond low. I believe this isn't the end but I hope for Anna's sake this is it.

ETA:  Sorry if this is on the wrong board, but in my mind this is media related.

The initial reason I heard for the hack was that users could join for free but if they wanted out they had to pay a fee to have their info deleted.

Unfortunately those users are finding out the hard way that nothing ever really deletes from the interwebz.

And I'm guessing a fair number wanted out because of lack of results.

And Josh is still the only one outed. That seems odd. Maybe others used better hidden email addys.

josh_the_man probably wasn't the best username.

I think there are interns knee deep in penis pics searching for Josh's correspondence on the site . I think it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Also a side note I couldn't pick Anna out of a line up but everyone seems to hold her in high regard. The posters here always did and I noticed on Gawker ( those posters can be vicious) the general concensus seems to be she is a nice person who didn't deserve any of this. She just seems like the anti Josh. I wish I could have a word with her parents who served up this lovely girl on a platter to this creep. And now they can't help her , even if they were so inclined ,because they live in squalor Because God put it on his heart to quit his job. What a mess.

But by the same token, I think it's probably human nature to feel good seeing hypocrites taken down a peg or two. Especially people who continually imply that they're better than nearly everyone else because of their exemplary behavior. And more especially when those people get caught doing the very thing for which they condemn others.

For me it's not just schadenfreude -- it's the satisfaction of having a hinky feeling revealed as an accurate prediction. I always thought there was something creepy about the Duggars.

Tell it all now, so he can ask for forgiveness all in one go. Confessions about how you've been bad, but this time you really have turned your heart to Jesus, and this time you really are repentant, seem to mean less the more times you do it.

I can't stand Nancy Grace, but I heard that she was discussing the Duggars last night so I caught the repeat today at 5.  I missed a bit of it, but I thought I heard the reporter tell Nancy that there was a plan for some sort of spin off which was now not going to happen.  Well, I know the spin off for Jessa and Jill was cancelled so I thought maybe it was referring to the special on child abuse until I read somewhere that JimBob and Michelle were pitching a series in which they counseled sex abuse victims.  Is this true or just some sick satire item (like from the Onion)?

I watch her show(which I never do as I don't care for her) and the reporter she was talking to stated a spin off but did not say what kind of spin off. I thought he was referring to the Jill/Jessa thing.

Did we know they guy who told his wife she was pregnant was a Madison user too? I always read all the post but I don't remember reading that. I've got to rethink my agnostic/ athesist stance because the baby Jesus seems to be answering all my prayers as of late.

ETA God put it on his heart to quit his job too!

He posted on their youtube channel, explaining that he confessed what he did (made an account in a moment of weakness, didn't act on anything - didn't have an affair) to his church a long time ago, to his wife, to his 'accountability' partner, and his wife has forgiven him.  His wife was sitting next to him and reiterated that.  They said they would be making no other statements to the media.  Yah, I think their youtube 'business' might take a hit, but the fact that he went belly up years ago and confessed to his wife and his church might allow him to ride this out without too much repercussions.  Not so Joshie, who has learned to exist with secrets and do his deeds in the dark, let's say.  Here's the link to that video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilFuzKURvhk

I'm throwing in with the folks who are calling Amy as the source close to the family who's talking to People. They're clearly very fond of her, if they're willing to let her use their publication to respond to absolutely nobody at all out there spreading the rumor that she was a victim.

I really doubt she actually knows anything. I doubt Jim Bob is too impressed by her pimping Josh's scandal to try and jumpstart her own career.

I've been reading so much about this latest scandal, that I had insomnia last night (I tend to obsess when something like this happens.) As I was in bed trying to clear my head of all things Duggar, this popped into my head:

" Hey! Maybe all of us that care about Anna can get our resources together and do a mass airdrop of information for Anna of choices she has besides staying with Josh......ALL over the Duggar compound! THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF THEM...She's bound to see ONE of them, right?" This was after I thought about how they finally got Harry's invite to Hogwarts to him via magical owls (anyone here own a magical owl?)

I almost wish it was something from the Onion!

It was discussed somewhere here in this maze of Duggarness but this article from Advocate seems to cover everything pretty well.

The Sam/Nia video (I don't even know who they are, but that's not relevant) brings to mind a general question: how can they *know* god has forgiven them? I'm not religious, but this strikes me as a delusional, arrogant thing to say. Is the idea that as long as they profess faith, every sinful thing they do is forgiven?

Why is it called Ashley Madison?  I never even heard of it till last week and then I thought it was a person.

My first thought when I saw their commercials was that how much it must stink to actually be a real person named Ashley Madison.

But I'd still take that over having the name Josh J Duggar nowadays.

This is a wild oversimplification, but some people rely on gnosis (which is the gift of a mystical direct experience of God, unless you think it's something else). Which is to say that someone in their position - I have no idea who they even are - might think God has forgiven them because they believe he told them so. Although the as long as they profess faith thing also exists (see: Duggar, Josh).

There also seems to be a fair amount of confusion over the difference between being forgiven by God and not suffering the earthly consequences of your actions (also see: Duggar, Josh).

Pretty cool, huh? They don't know, perhaps they hope? I was raised Catholic. There were mortal sins and venial sins. You could get venial sins wiped out with Confession. Mortal, we were told blackened your soul and you were just toast. Literally. Fires of hell for all eternity. Eating meat on Friday pre Vatican II was a mortal sin. Then they changed the rules and you only had to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. I questioned if there was some kind of reprieve for all those poor burning souls.... My first inkling that this all might be a fairy tale like Santa and the tooth fairy. I believe in God. He lives in my heart. I know right from wrong. Sometimes I do wrong not meaning to. But, he knew right from wrong and cheating on your wife is wrong. You surf the web looking for porn. You know that is wrong. You find a site, click on it and peruse. You know that is wrong. You see they take credit cards. You know that is wrong. You go and get your credit card. You know that is wrong. You type the credit card info into the computer. You know that is wrong. See where I am going? Multiple chances he had to rethink and choose a different path. Repent, beg the Lord's forgiveness. Nope. He created a profile and began trolling. When did he beg the Lord's forgiveness? When he got caught! It has been said before, he is not sorry, he is sorry he got caught. God is shaking his head. Some people are just not good at heart. People like him and his ilk, who pass judgement on others while secretly doing worse, are the definition of evil. They don't deserve to be any kind of role models. I pity them because their souls are truly blackened by lust and greed. Their "god" may forgive them, but we shouldn't.

What's interesting is that they don't seem to have struck against Ashley Madison because it's a scumbag business run by scumbags. From what they've said, they struck against Ashley Madison because their customers weren't getting laid enough.

I read that they outed them because they took money promising to remove peoples' names from their list and then did not do it.

It creeps me out that I know the answer to this, but Longform linked to an interview with the guy who founded Ashley Madison a few weeks ago (yeah, I know, that's my story). What you pay for is sending messages to women. What Josh's subscriptions represent is the number of "wanna[*]?"s he sent while he was on their site.

People Magazine must be working with the Duggars. Exclusive out by Monday?

People has been very loyal to the Duggars. Is that to help TLC bring on a spin off, or because they are smitten with the Duggs? In one of those links it says that Jill and Jessa are to be on People August 31 edition cover, the day after the documentary. What is the connection between People and TLC?

People magazine is looking foolish imo. They are getting the watered down version of everything and trying to sell it. The other magazines, even if they are paparazzi rags, have no connection with the Duggars and are getting the story.

One of the links suggests that, basically even residual fan interest in the family would make a spin off of the older girls and/or other children a success. My guess is a lot of fans will watch the first few episodes of the Jessa and Jill show, then fall out once they realize they are watching small families doing nothing. They aren't 'little, amish, giants, gypsy' and without production they don't even have great adventures. How can Jill reconcile her donations with a spinoff that is paying for her missioncation?

Find a 'real' young escaped fundie or two and film that. Not like the Amish which was so over produced. A 'how to'. If they can get several of them, no one gets too important to the show and they won't have to 'modify' their actual lives to get film. Somebody will have something interesting each week. Plus the payment is less per person. That is the only Gothard show I would want to see. TLC tried to fill time with large families, but it doesn't look like that is the real draw.

I've been subscribing to People Magazine since it first started back in the mid-70's....about 40 years.  My annual subscription came up for renewal three months ago, and I simply let it expire and didn't renew...for two reasons:  Beside the fact I can now find any of the information in People online, I was simply tired of seeing the Duggars on the cover.  You can bet there's one reason why they put them on the cover so much....sales.  If a Duggar cover sells even a little more than an average issue sells, it will be noted by People and they will arrange for another Duggar cover in the not too distant future.  They apparently don't care that they may be alienating regular subscribers who don't like the Duggars.

Some people just skim pictures and headlines. Not a lawyer - but is it a form of slander (libel? fraud?*) to do what Josh did. Does this guy have a case for anything?

Here's the thing.  According to media accounts, the hackers gave AM website a heads-up that they had been hacked.  I believe it was a couple of weeks ago.  That gave people the chance to amend the profiles, change email addresses.  And cover their tracks.  The fact that so few did either reeks of arrogance or ignorance.

I'm not sure changing profiles would have helped if the hackers had all the original info from when they got into the system. They gave AM a month to shut the site down and when they didn't, then the hackers released the info they had.

No, because from comments I've read, some people did exactly that.   Changed the profile picture to a woman (if the subscriber were a man) and so if spouse checked, the account would look fake.   And the checking could only go so far. Even if the email was the person's email, the subscriber could just say that the email had been stolen.   It's pretty interesting that a few people did this and succeeded in hoodwinking the spouse.    Interesting and horrible.

"The Duggars had a lot more people and story lines to pursue."

And yet it seemed to me as if it had hardly any story lines. .... To have story lines you need to have people who, you know, do something. Something besides getting pregnant and not kissing. And you may also need characters who are different from one another. Instead of a whole slew of people who, in response to any situation, all recite the exact same meaningless lines, over and over and over again for years.

I know. I know. This is a radaronline link but would anyone be surprised if Josh was asking to be paid for an interview?

Maybe if a woman got pregnant by him on the side he'll pay for the abortion or pay her off. Please don't hate me for thinking this!

If Smuggar is revealed to have paid for even one abortion, it's a sign from Da Lawd, and I will need to go back to church to give thanks. I think the only thing that could possibly be more Internet-firestorm-inducing could be that Smuggar had a fling with Bristol Palin and she's carrying his child.

I kind of think he would only be interested in sex with women. I suspect sex is a lot about power for Josh and a lot about treating somebody else like an object who isn't capable of independent activity. After all, he thinks there are times that someone would be obliged to have sex with him. I can see him thinking that about any woman, but I can't see him thinking it about a man. Lording stuff over women could be a way for a man like Josh to feel big in a world where he might actually suspect that other men don't see him as that important.

I know he's curious about stuff that's hitherto been outside his ken. But I lean toward thinking that sex is more about a feeling of power than about great curiosity and openness to new experiences, for him. Can't help but think that this is a guy who cried when leaving mommy and daddy in Arkansas, when he was already a grown man and a father of children, and who ran home for a couple of weekends every month. That doesn't sound to me like somebody who's actually hungry for all sorts of out there experiences.
