Marnie and Desi honeymooned in Ecuador. Sounds about right. Also I love how everyone already knows about Ray's unrequited feelings for Marnie ("don't be thristy Ray ") . Would have been more hilarious if he had said " don't be thristy, Raymond "

Um.. Was Adam amazing in that show? I guess he was okay.

Hold up. Fran is saying he loves Hannah? Whoa.

Well jessa you are sending a hell of a lot of mixed messages. You're like jumping hugging him and telling him how amazing awesome he was on a guest spot on a show and then flirting with him. And thennbeingall 'no, stay away'. Pick something. Do it or don't. After lasts week scene, these exchanges they had this week was strange.

So is this the last of Lil Baby Aidy on the show? And she did explain why she was being fired didn't they? They said they couldn't afford to keep her in Japan working for them. It sucks that she moved her whole life to Japan though. Bye boyfriend of Shoshannas whose name I do not remember.

Oh Hannah deleting all those pictures is probably not going to end well for you.

Ray is still even with his 3.6 seconds of screentime is still one of the brightest spots on this show.

Poor Shosh. She was having so much fun in Japan, and her female friends there treated her so much better than Hannah, Marnie, and Jessa. She obviously didn't get on the plane, so I wonder if she finds another job there. It's not very realistic since she only seems to speak basic Japanese, but I'm rooting for her.

 

Fran should have put a PIN on his phone the minute Hannah confronted him with the ex-girlfriend pictures. At least if he has iCloud backups enabled, the pictures aren't gone-gone. Ray was surprisingly laid back in the face of full frontal Hannah. Do millennial hipsters routinely have friends of the opposite sex take naked pictures of them?

 

Of course Marnie has to pronounce Ecuador the pretentious way. I give her marriage three more episodes.

 

The Jessa/Adam plot still does nothing for me, but good for him for getting a speaking part on a major TV show.

Ironic that with the Apple vs. FBI case going on, Hannah has unfettered access to Fran's personal digital effects, stored on an iPhone no less. Of course he'd have a lock code and backups.

Why is Shosh so happy in Japan? The girls were mocking her by speaking rapidly in Japanese so she couldn't follow and the men, except for her crush, were pretty hostile, calling her a slut (like all Americans) or taunting her at that fetish club.

Maybe being on her own was the appeal?

After that little scene on the couch in the previous episode, why is Jessa being coy? "Only friends" do not do that in each other's presence. That was some serious tease.

Totally shallow takeaway - I really want Shosh's alarm clock.

 

 

I totally want the alarm clock and the adorable Japanese apartment.  I know spaces tend to be small in Japan, but that place totally suited her.

 

I love that Hannah is Kate Upton to herself (until she found those pictures).  Lena is really committed to showing that loving the skin you are in can be very sexy.  It's interesting that she seems to have less trouble attracting guys then the more conventionally attractive Marnie.

 

Marnie line of " I love the word husband" was funny.  It seems she is more into being married, then looking honestly at the guy she married.

 

Jessa and Adam are cute together.  They seem to balance the crazy in each other, where Hannah and Adam just seemed to magnify each others' worst qualities.

I've never liked Jessa but she earned a few points this week by maintaining firm boundaries with Adam.

The scene on Ray's couch where Jessa teased Adam that he was going to be famous was a meta Star Wars moment.

Was Adam good on that Law & Order type show? Hard to tell. Why is he coming on so strong with Jessa? Is Adam the type who cannot be alone? Go get 13 hours of sleep like Ray.

Shosh found her tribe in Japan. The contrast between Shosh's genuine enjoyment of Japan was an interesting compliment to Marnie's faux new free attitude in Ecaudor (use the pertensious accent). Years ago when I was in the Navy I lived on the island of Guam and fell in love with the place. One of my biggest regrets was returning to the States after my enlistment was up. I'd love to see Shosh stay in Japan and make it work.

Hannah is sabotaging her relationship with Fran, which is a shame because he brings a nice balance.

I didn't think the girls were mocking her. It seemed more like teasing. I think they sincerely like Shosh.

 

As for the guys... Ugh. Yoshi, of course, was very nice, but the other guys were gross.

 

Anyway, it really looked like Shosh felt completely at home in Japan. She loves the culture, the design, the people, the language... the job, which she just lost. But everything there feels right to her. Of course she would feel happy and want to stay.

Yeah, Jessa is definitely sending mixed signals. And Adam needs to back off. 

 

I hated Hannah deleting Fran's photos. That was awful. However, if I were her I would be irritated and confused by Fran having pics of his exes AND masturbating to them. I could kind of see Fran's POV, but it would definitely bother me. I wouldn't delete them though.

 

Loved when Hannah was posing naked and tried to do a coy smile, prompting Elijah to say, "Not the Katie Holmes."

Hannah is usually insufferable, but I did feel for her a little bit (though it was still not a good thing to delete those pictures).  I mean, how would Fran feel if Hannah had naked pictures of her exes that she used to pleasure herself, particularly if they were more generously endowed then Fran?

I understand why she was upset, but Hannah deleting the photos was some passive-aggressive nonsense.

 

I love how Desi manages to make the mere act of showering obnoxious. 

 

If Jessa didn't want to get into a "will-they-won't-they" dance with Adam, she probably shouldn't have done the joint masturbation session. Not to say she isn't entitled to her feelings, just that her show of indignation at this point is a little strange.

Het entire storyline was preposterous. Hired out of college with no experience for a position in a foreign country? I don't think so.

An apartment that size for a low level employee in Japan? Hardly.

The entire S&M scene? Weird even for this show.

More Ray, please. Less pretentious Marnie.

Marnie on her honeymoon just proved she really only go married to be married, "I just love hearing the word husband!" Completely ignoring the fact that Hannah said she saw her husband being naked and everything. Like I highly doubt this attitude is going to stick, she's just loving the title of being married, the actual act of a marriage won't last.

Does anyone remember last week when Hannah and Elijah were making out in front Fran? Fran jerking it to pictures of his exes does not reach that level inappropriateness. I'm not saying there's no blame on Fran's side, but Hannah is pulling stuff that is overly controlling and a bit abusive (especially when she deleted files from his phone).

I can kind of see Hannahs point about Fran, but, honestly, compared to the rouges gallery of weirdo dudes on this show, jerking off to pictures of your ex girlfriends is hardly a deal breaker. 

 

For a second, when Adam and them were watching his show, I thought a commercial for Elementary was playing for some reason. 

 

Shosh finally found where she belongs! Too bad about the job issue, and the kind of boyfriend. On the one hand, her not letting him know she was staying was bad form, but on the other hand, he could have been a little more empathetic to her, when she was clearly heartbroken that she lost her job, and would have to leave Japan. Still felt bad for him though.

Yeah, Hannah does not have much room to talk about appropriateness, but I could still see her point.  I mean it is not exactly appropriate for Ray to be taking naked pictures of her, for her boyfriend to pleasure himself to, but this show has always been weird about boundaries.

 

I was happy for Shosh, but it really was jerky not to tell the guy she changed her mind (I mean he went to the airport with flowers).  However, Shosh has a history of treating that guy badly and he seems to like her more for it.

 

She told him his product (instant noodles) smelled like pussy (but she used a much better Shosh term for it), she moves to Japan at the beginning of their relationship (which was the right decision for her), and now she stands him up at the airport.

 

She is obviously not into the guy and hopefully their relationship is over, and she can start things up with cute Yoshi.

I don't understand how Jessa is a complete batshit crazy mess but yet she pulls it together for everyone sometimes, like Marnie's wedding. I hate that Adam now has feelings for her and her boundaries are so freaky. Mutual masturbation is too much but he did something weird like that in the beginning of his and Hannah's relationship.

 

Marnie is like the people in the cult of weddings, they want the wedding, but don't plan for the marriage. The guy is kind of irrelevant, they just plug him into the scene.

I would not be asking my brother to take sexy naked pictures of me that are meant for my boyfriend/husband to pleasure himself with.  However, I know everybody's family is different about these things.

Especially since travel time from Japan to NYC is at least 18 hours, and most likely more than that. She had plenty of time to let him know.

 

I understood Hannah's problem with the photos, but deleting the photos will only blow up the relationship. OTH, Fran was stupid for not locking his phone immediately.

Hannah would probably just destroy the phone if she couldn't access it. Having said that, I'd not only have a passcode for the phone, I'd disable the fingerprint feature if I were in Fran's shoes.

I'd also break up with Hannah and reevaluate my romantic choices.

Shosh was adorbs in Japan. I didn't see anything offensive... Just not great english which is pretty realistic. And Japanese culture is different from New York. They filmed in Japan. The fetish bar was weird but I don't think the show was suggesting that this was normal. Yos hi was adorable.

She may have been trying to pronounce Ecuador the pretentious way, but she simply pronounced it the *wrong* way. There is no such thing as a glottal "c" in Spanish. "Ch", maybe, in some dialects, but usually "j" is the only glottal letter.

I think Shosh liked it in Japan cause she had a real job and she felt a member of a family there. Plus I guess the japanese culture with all the colors etc fits her more.

 

Hannah does what she always does best: sabotages anything good in her life. The story with the naked photos of exes will be the downfall for her and Fran, and it will be only natural because the real truth is Hannah has not yet accepted she is worth it and she does everything subconsciously to sabotage everything good in her life so she will confirm her being worthless.

 

Adam should get away from Jessa NOW.

 

Marnie living in her own little rainbow world was just painful to watch.

I know communal bathing was a thing once upon a time in Japan. There's an episode of Little House on the Prairie about it, and come on, if it happened on Little House then it must be real. Also the mini series Shogun. Yes, all my cultural references are from tv.

Not sure how it works in Japan, but would her work visa automatically be terminated when she lost her job (since they may have been listed as her sponsor), or do they issue more general work visas that would be valid for a particular length of time, in which case as long as she finds other employment within that timeframe that meets the terms of the visa she's still perfectly legal? Each country is a little different in this regard, so I'm not sure what her exact situation is.

I know, she was awful to him. Their first meeting was an example of one of my most hated rom-com tropes: one person is incredibly rude and insulting to the other, and yet the other person inexplicably finds them irresistibly charming. Ugh.

I find Marnie to be fairly insufferable, but this particular line didn't really bother me. I know lots of people who get giddy about using the terms "fiancé" and "husband" when they first get engaged/married, or who can't stop looking at their engagement ring for the first few weeks. It's a new phase of their lives and I don't mind that they're excited about it. But yes, I agree that this marriage is going to crash and burn relatively soon, and I expect it to be hilarious to watch.

Okay, so what are we supposed to learn from this? None of these girls/women have any impulse control because their parents have no impulse control?

 

Sounds about right. It wasn't modeled and so even though they have had reasons to learn it, they haven't really known what it was or that it was even possible. I worry about Shosh staying in Japan, because although Yoshi is adorable, what he knows is that she had a bf but slept with him, and that alone might disqualify her from marrying him. She'd have had a better chance with him if she were still a virgin.

I wondered about that, too. His story completely persuaded me at first. These are women who consented to this, they're not underage or druggies etc...they're real women who actually did sleep with him, not unrealistic movie stars. Everything about it is so sensible and logical and healthy that it's too good to be true. Plus they're on his phone. Is that really where guys keep their porn stashes these days?

 

I half expect to find out that they are either a) girls from various dating services he subscribes to, Skyping him back, OR b) female images provided for him by a therapist as part of some very inappropriate attempt to change his sexual orientation. I just don't quite buy that Fran is really straight, and apparently neither does Elijah.

Either, all of Fran's other girlfriends were very conventionally good looking or he might have been lying about dating all of them.

What bugged me about the photos storyline is why did Fran hand his phone over to Hannah and walk away. He knows the photos are right there and there's a good chance she's going to scroll. Pretty dumb of him. 

I hate that Hannah not only erased the photos but also set hers up as a screen saver.

They even called her spoiled (of course, according to her, all Americans are a-holes).  They couldn't have been that close, for sure.  But Shosh doesn't seem like the kind of person who cultivates deep, personal friendships.

 

How cute was her apartment building, though?  My taste is so *not* Japanese-y, but I covet that building and her apartment!

I really loved this episode, mainly because of Shoshanna's storyline. She and Yoshi were adorable. i feel like I could watch an entire show just about Shosh's adventures in Japan.

 

My favorite moment of the show, though, was Hannah's photo shoot with Ray and Elijah. Mainly because I busted out laughing at this exchange:

Ray: Give me a coy smile, like you know a secret.

Hannah: [smiles]

Elijah: No, not the Katie Holmes. Smile like someone just told you a cake is coming.

Hannah: [huge smile]

Elijah: There's my girl.

I'm not persuaded, and don't find it sensible, logical, or healthy.  Pretty darn sure those girls' consent to have their naked pictures available to him to masturbate to ended the moment they broke up.  Ethically, there is an implied consent there and I think it's a violation of those girls to continue to use those pictures.  I know how I would feel if I were one of those girls.
