S04.E01: Can't Let Go

Recommended Posts

Steven Tyler guest stars as himself to sing a duet of "Crazy" with Juliette Barnes. With Juliette's starring role in the Patsy Cline bio-pic, she is at an all-time career high, but is hitting a personal low. Meanwhile Avery, separated from Juliette, tends to baby Cadence at his parents' home in Texas. Rayna, along with her family and friends, grapple with the chilling aftermath of Deacon's liver transplant.

No Will Lexington? BOOHOO

I think I'm mostly out after the disaster that was season 3. I Hope it picks up on a strong note though!

Also, that sneak peek totally confirms that Deacon lived. No way Rayna would be so energetic and up to juliette business if he was. Right?

Dammit, Scarlett.  That kissing scene with Gunnar was hot, and one of the few enjoyable moments of the show -- and you had to go and stop it!

Loved Rayna trying to help Juliette.  And the look she gave that little hanger-on, claiming to be Juliette's best friend.  Hee!   Of course, Juliette's self-destruction continues ... oh, Juliette.

I'm glad Beverly survived - if only so we don't have to listen to Deacon wah-wah-ing about how he killed his sister, all season long.

I predict that poor Daphne is going to have a big meltdown this season.

Poor Will.  He just doesn't feel at ease anywhere.

Wow, the desperation to cover up the loss of Oliver Hudson was palpable. Hopefully he can at least make a couple guest spots to wrap things up.

Isn't he doing both?  I've seen him post pics on Twitter with Hayden recently.  And Hayden mentions Jeff in a preview of what's to come this season interview.

Thought it was a great premier and I liked how everything kind of tied together and that everyone has something that is not quite working out. Love Gunnar and Scarlett singing together and I think the doctor is boring even though he is a nice guy. I'm hoping Rayna can now focus on getting some more talent for her label, and we might get some good singers on the show.

Juliette continues to be a spoiled brat. I can never forgive people for abandoning their children, you can't get that time back. i can also see they don't really know what to do with Will now, I hope they figure it out. I enjoy Chris Carmack as a singer and actor.

Glad Beverly is OK, but technically they wouldn't be able to find out her real status until she wakes up and is evaluated. She could be mentally damaged in some way from the aneurism, there is no way to tell with her still unconscious. Glad Deacon is OK, but of course he is.

Wow when Juliette finally hits rock bottom it's gonna be epic!

I've had an casting idea for the show: pop/country singer Steve Grand (who happens to also be openly gay). He'd be great as a shoulder for Will to lean on and if it happens to lead to the two of them getting "horizontal" then even better.

Will needs to learn how to use the Internets and find some gay cowboy bars. They are everywhere. Poor Lila. They just keep dumping on her. I used to root for Juliet, but they lost me last season, and I see this season is not going to get any better. Is Steve Tyler transitioning?

Yeah I'm actually wondering if she will turn out to have deficits since I never heard anything about the actress being added to the cast. That way they can ship her off to a rehab center and pretend Scarlett and Deacon visit her and not have to deal with her dramatic ass until sweeps.

Three men and a baby is going to be epic.

Scarlett needs to ditch the doctor but I do think its fair to that she shouldn't make that call when her mom is in a coma. Much better to make that call when she has a cool head, I have a feeling though we're in for a whole pattern of Scarlett hooking up with Gunnar and running back to doc.  (I have a year to remember this guys name and I still don't that kinda says it all doesn't it?). Watch the Doc will walk in on them going at it on his kitchen floor for November sweeps.

Also I hope this whole Juliette having Jeff as her manager doesn't mean we've seen the last of Glenn. He's the only person on his show who could honestly be called calm. Plus his hair  amuses me. (Although I fully expect I'm the only one who will be saying this) Maybe he can be Avery's new manager.

I didn't see how there was any possibility that Deacon wouldn't survive, but still, I appreciated the effort the show put into holding back Deacon -- even lining up Esten's credit with his actual appearance onscreeen -- fun times!

Wow, so how many characters went a month without bathing, shaving or washing their hair? (I laughed my head off at Chris Carmack's face as Will got a whiff of himself when Gunnar told him to "[A]t least take a shower!") But if Mopey Gunnar is telling you to reel it in, you are in a Bad. Way. I want Will and CGS Kevin to be okay!

I really liked Rayna's attempt to reach out to Juliette, but she can't have been surprised by Juliette's denial. (If I were in Juliette's place I would want to repress all memory of the Grand Guignol clown makeup from the bathroom meltdown, too. Eewrrrr.) I did like Rayna and Luke sort-of-civil, sort-of-snarking at each other, though.

Speaking of things Rayna can't have been surprised about, how is it possible that Rayna only realizes now that her pet project is considered (by "everyone") a vanity label?

I think I would have preferred even whiny Scarlett and mopey Deacon to Layla and another of her pointless death spirals. Not looking forward to Daphne's probable rebel phase, either, to be honest. (Her duet with Luke last season was about five different kinds of adorable, and it was the most I've ever liked Luke.)

In conclusion, Charles Esten kills me, even when he's singing slightly drippy songs to his unworthy mess of a sister.

ETA: Has Steven Tyler always looked faintly simian? (I liked his harmonies with Panettiere a lot.)

I was thinking the exact same thing! The whole gay scene is not all electronic mahem and flashing lights. Poor Will. I hope him living with Gunnar and Avery (and baby makes 4!) will get him to pick up his guitar again. I have always loved his voice.

Gunnar and Scarletts drama might be boring, but they do have great musical chemistry. Now just get Avery in there again!

Juliette is going to crash HARD. Like, Scarlette and her nervous breakdown hard.

Great to have the show back! Between this show and Empire, I have all of my music/soap opera requirements met 100 times over.

No, I agree with you on that. LOL. Or were you talking about him being Avery's manager?

Honey, yes! I am so happy it's back.

I will forever appreciate the consistency of Gunnar's cereal addiction.

I didn't want Will to shave his beard off. Damn.

Poor, sweet Avery. Dealing with that daddy of his on top of everything else? Glad to see he went back home.

We got the requisite Juliette vomits into a toilet scene out the way early this season. I really, really enjoyed her scene with Layla. Yeah, she's off the rails, but in that instance, I enjoyed it. I am seriously hoping she pulls it together though.

I feel compelled to point out that of course "Aunty Bev" (blerf!) already has major deficits -- of the soul, rather than neurological.

I actually thought Avery's dad acted almost human this episode. Far more supportive and less sourly judgmental than his atrocious usual.

Aw, I actually feel for poor Daphne. And Maddie grates. Her line to Deacon about how Daphne can't say Deacon isn't her father if he marries Rayna was messed up and not true. She still can. Teddy may be guilty and kind of crappy as of late, but he's still Daphne's dad.

I'm kind of excited to see Avery, Gunner,  Will, and Cadence. Should be adorable.

Izabella, Juliette was lying about the phone call. Hence the avoidance of eye contact and the sudden attack on Rayna's label.

Avery's dad wasn't as horrible as he was at the CMAs, but saying his son's wife was "a long shot anyway" is really messed up. Especially considering what Avery must be feeling right now. Way to kick a dog when he's down.

I'm really surprised at how callous Deacon was toward Juliette considering that they were friends. He's preoccupied with Beverly, but jeez. He couldn't have texted AVERY to see how he/Juliette/baby was doing?

Can someone clarify the deal that Hwy65 gets for letting Juliette go? I rewound and watched again but still couldn't understand what Bucky said.

I thnk Beverly IS going to die.

That, along with the stress of melding their family, Rayna's need to focus on her career, etc., should make sure there's no smooth sailing for Rayna and Deacon.

Hopefully, though, they work things out, together, and we do get that wedding!

Avery needs to talk to Juliette's reps to set up some child support. She is very wealthy and should be supporting her child. He could threathen to take her to court and it would come out that she is a dead beat mom.

Scarlette looks so much nicer with the darker hair.

Well I'm concerned that Beverly is going to be really pissed off when she wakes up and realized that someone cut her hair! How rude. Was probably Reyna.

Didn't give much mention to Teddy did they? That would be a.huge scandal in real life.

Was wondering if Oliver was going to be back after I saw him on scream queens but I don't think the ratings were all that wonderful so who knows how long that gig will last,

And I was wondering why Kevin would take Will to a typical thumpa thumpa gay dance club. Guess he doesn't know Will all that well if he thought that would be a good place for him. There has to be at least one gay country bar in Nashville, right?

Sick of Juliette and her issues. Can she just hit rock bottom already?

Lawdy, lawdy...

Oh, Rayna. First rule of celebrity fight club: Do not Google yourself.

I second the "Cadence is one cutie pie."

In hindsight, I wish the show had just committed to Juliet as a full-on Alexis Carrington bitch rather than trying for depth. They don't do depth very well on this show anymore, and Hayden is great as an ice queen.

As I watched Will freaking out, I couldn't help but think, "Go grab some dinner at the Frothy Monkey, dude. Those people would be nice to you."

I want to look forward to Daphne's meltdown, but this show failed so miserably with Maddie's that I worry it will superficial, bratty, and totally inconsistent.

It was really nice to see Rayna and Deacon as a healthy, functioning couple. I'm sure it won't last, but for now, that part of the story feels grounded.

I can’t believe the “Will & his gay penis”, “Juliette makes a mistake”, “Scarlett, her wig, & Gunnar, twu wuv?”, & the “Layla is a friggin’ moron” plots are still going on. I am so sick of all of them. At least we don’t have to actually see Jeff or Teddy, just hear about them, which is bad enough. And I’ve already seen “Three Men and a Baby”, I don’t need to see the country version of it.

Jesus Christ, Scarlett and Gunnar...

One would think that at some point they would finally take the hint that there's no stopping it. That everyone else in their life will just be a placeholder and that it's really unfair to other people to put them through that.

Also Gunnar has to be the most stupid guy who ever lived. He wouldn't have to do anything. Tell the girl you love her and you want her back, chill out for a month and she'll probably throw herself at you. But no, I guess the crazy obsessive ex-boyfriend is the way to go!

There needs to be a new warning label for shows:  STF – show includes Steven Tyler Face.  I have never been so glad that I was not watching in HD. Why would they show a close up of him?  What have we done to deserve that?

The only reason I can come up with for the thumpa-thumpa gay bar was Will’s guy thought they wouldn’t be recognized there.  Otherwise, makes no sense.

I will give Rayna this - it was all my mom could do to drag my tired ass out of bed and get to school a few minutes before the bell rang, but she manages to get her girls up so early that they have time to stop by the hospital to visit Beverly before school. That's more impressive than all her CMA awards put together!

I know I'm supposed to think that Scarlet and her boyfriend are cute, but dude, you're living together and you still can't say, "I love you" to each other? That reminds me of high school guys who want to have sex but don't want to be seen buying condoms. Either sack up or don't do it.

How is it that Gunnar is so great when he's with Will and so terrible when he's with Scarlet? His "I know you want this" speech was veering off into rapey Spike on BtVS territory. It's too bad that we are getting stuck with this on again/off again Scarlet and Gunnar stuff because I really love their duets. The show's efforts to keep them apart keep pushing Gunnar into worse and worse places, which I hate. I wish they had just stayed a couple and then had a duet every week so we could have been spared the last two seasons of their relationship drama.

Part of me appreciates Kevin taking Will to a gay bar to try to give him a place where he wasn't being judged and stared at, but in Will's defense not everyone likes loud dance music. One of my gay friends haaaaaaates bars like that because he hates the music. But it's 2015. There are lots of different kinds of gay bars now, so and Kevin could have taken Will somewhere else in the first place. I mean, seriously, does Will look like the kind of guy who enjoys EDM and thumping bass?

Avery, I love you, but for the love of God, turn off the keyboard noises on your phone. Don't be one of those annoying people who insists on making everyone hear every single click as you text! But Avery's mom is awesome!

Man, when I saw that Steven Tyler was coming onstage to sing "Crazy" with Juliette, I was really hoping it would turn into a mashup with the Aerosmith "Crazy."

Part of me was hoping that Beverly would die just we would be spared the inevitable drama, but I knew that if she died that would mean permanently turning Deacon into self-flagellating mopey emo guy like Angel. But Beverly lives to annoy, manipulate, and guilt trip another day.

Where the hell did Daphne's "you're not my father" business come from? This is the girl who adores Deacon.

Can someone clarify the deal that Hwy65 gets for letting Juliette go? I rewound and watched again but still couldn't understand what Bucky said.

Luke's label has rights to Juliette's new album as well as the rights for her next two albums. Meanwhile, Highway 65 got paid a buttload of money because Luke had to buy out Juliette's contract from Rayna.

The only reason I can come up with for the thumpa-thumpa gay bar was Will’s guy thought they wouldn’t be recognized there.  Otherwise, makes no sense.

I can think of another reason: when in doubt, always reach for the nearest cliché.

I'm 50, and for as long as I can remember there has only ever been one gay bar in American TV land, and it's this one. I think it has teleportation capability, because it can be located in every city wherever a storyline involving gay men is set. It's not even restricted to America, I've seen it make guest appearances in several places in Europe, too. All gay people go there.

And you're right, it makes no sense whatsoever. If Will was really as famous as he's supposed to be, as well as the major heartthrob he's supposed to be, and then came out in the spectacularly public way he did, a gay bar would be just about the last place in the world where you'd take him if he really was uncomfortable with being noticed. Plus he's with Kevin, whose name and face would also have been plastered all over the media as a result of that coming out, and known to be his boyfriend. These two would for a while be easily the most recognizable couple in Nashville if any of it had happened in the real world.

The bit that led up to that bar visit was also really awful writing, IMO. Would any woman who'd had a one-night stand with Will, back when he was still pretending to be a ladies' man, really make a public spectacle of herself like that, in what appears to be an expensive, genteel restaurant? It seems bizarre to me.

That gay club was embarrassing. It's 2015 and even in Nashville gay people are not so shamed that they can't go out to dinner.

I, too, think Bev will die and we will be on track to suffer more Deacon ugly crying. As long as there are no more incestuous bedside lullabies, I'll be okay. Maybe.

I get Daphne is struggling and that's why she lashed out at Deacon. It's to be expected, I suppose. But as someone above me noted, she adores Deacon and she HAS to know how much he adores her. I would like to think she wouldn't have been so quick to turn, but as magpie said, this turmoil is going to be inconsistent at best.

It would be nice if Deacon and Rayna were actually at home dealing with the girls instead of singing love songs over the bed of a woman who has been a monster the entire run of the show and running to the other side of the country to deal with someone crying on the phone while the girls physically fight over letters and guilt and whatever else.

All that said, I'm at least grateful that they are stable and functioning as a couple for now. I guess that will blow up when Beverly dies and they can never ever get married because she won't be able to be in the wedding. *eyeroll*

Well other than Aunty Bev being alive, I loved this episode.  Scarlett just needs to realize that Gunnar is the one for her and quit shacking up with the doctor.  Juliette is a horrible Mother, replaying the past that was her Mother.   Will needs to man up and quit moping around.  Perhaps the bf took him to that bar because the bf likes it?  Will seems to have been a selfish jerk during the one month in between.

Deacon continues to be awesome.  And poor Rayna, when will she learn that Juliette is a little witch and a lost cause?  Stop wasting time on her and tend to Daphne, who seems to have had brat lessons during the month off.

At least Daph washed during that month, unlike half the adult characters.

And Cute Gay Songwriter Kevin is, well, a CGS! He couldn't find a country bar? Maybe he thought hurtin' songs would just make Will wallow more? The hammering bass line was meant to be a distraction, I'm sure of it. (For Will or from him, one or the other.)

Even in a coma, Beverly achieves these (bolded) things.

Hayden P looked awesome in that black dress on stage.  I'm having a hard time buying that super annoying bestie being in Juliette's inner circle.

Gunnar got a haircut - yeah!  Will took a shower, shaved and got a haircut - yeah!  Scarlett's hair looked better than it has in the past - yeah!  Please plop Avery's ass down and give him the same treatment.

Okay, Three Men and a Baby needs it's own comic music theme. Bassoons and pizzicato.

I cracked up when bedraggled Juliette hung up when her "best friend" said they were ordering breakfast. Was that "sure, I could eat an omelet."? Loved Rayna's WTF face at "I'm her best friend."

I totally cracked up when Scarlet's doctor boyfriend presented her with that necklace and said, "I know you love vintage." But she hasn't been carrying around her olde tyme suitcase or wearing granny nightgowns as outside clothes lately! How could he possibly know she loves vintage stuff without those huge clues?

That was completely crazy. She said she wished she'd known his was gay before she humiliated herself. Like, what the hell did she think she was doing making a public spectacle of herself?

Also, at one month in a coma Beverly would've long been switched from a mouth tube to a traech tube. I should know better with this show but I can't help it.

Oh, airwair. Let's not ruin things with facts.

Did that reviewer say Oscar buzz for the Patsy Cline movie? Oh, how I laughed. That movie looked awful.

Y'all, I love Avery's hair! But I love Avery no matter what.

That new "best friend" of Juliette's is giving me bad, bad vibes. Like the lady that ultimately killed Selena bad vibes. How did she not know who Rayna was? Ha!

Gunnar's cabinets used to be blue, did they not? Am I tripping? There's something different about that kitchen.

Almost had a seizure when Juliette sang Crazy. Those lights. Warn us next time, show.

Scarlett said she wanted to be in love with Dr. Dull? What kind of...why did you move in with that dude?

WAIT A DAMN MINUTE. How am I just now noticing this? Avery's trophy for soloist from the year is from Akron High School? First of all, no such place exists, and I would know because I live here. But for this, Nashville, you forever have my heart!
