Poor Brooke. I have a soft spot for her, and seeing her become even more isolated over this season has made me so sad. Poor Sophia too. She deserves better.

I knew Daya's mom was lying to Pornstache's mom. This whole storyline is a mess.

Still enjoying the Pennsatucky/Boo friendship.

Is it bad that I kind of wanted to laugh in Piper's face when Stella said she was leaving? For me, Piper has reverted back to being completely insufferable.

I'm wondering if Stella is the one hired to get Alex.

I knew the baby wasn't dead because I accidentally clicked on a spoiler because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. I was really annoyed at the time but watching the episode I was glad I knew because that scene would have been devastating.

Aleida is the absolute worst. Most characters have grown on me, or at least I have some degree of empathy for them, but the more I see of her the more I loathe her, even if she did try to correct one of her many, many, many mistakes.

I hope SoSo is ok. While I like Norma and the cult of Normal, I'm disappointed in her for not shutting that shit down. I like the parallels between her and Red, how a little bit of cult of personality can make you do the wrong things.

Aleida really is the worst. She has manipulated Daya all over the place during her pregnancy and she instigated a lot of the problem with Sophia in the last episode.

Everyone in this storyline is awful, but Aleida may be the worst of them. She is the one I always think of when I read that OINTB is making all of the characters sympathetic -- I really don't sympathize with her at all. She is manipulative and self-absorbed and only sporadically seems to care about her kids. The only redeeming quality I can think of is that her friendship with Gloria can be kind of cute.

Yea, Aleida's pathology hasn't really changed. She loves kids because they're impressionable and she can fool them making her the center of their world. She lashes out like a baby herself when Daya showed even a modicum of independence from her. She had 11 of them because she kept repeating the baby high, not because she actually wanted any of them. Didn't her man even (statutory) rape Daya? And her only reaction was jealousy.

Pff, Sophia is going to bring a whole tractor trailer of misery on them when she finally gets out. The fact they turned on her so quickly is disgusting.

Haha, Taystee's the mom. I knew that was coming. Black Cindy is only getting more insufferable, I know a lot of her increased bravado is basically PTSD from V, but I still can't bring myself to feel that sorry for her.

I'm hopping aboard the Aleida hate train. That was probably the only back story that made me dislike the character more than I already did. That woman is a straight-up narcissist, and now that we've had an inside look at Cesar's parenting style, I'm genuinely scared for that child. Not that I wanted Pornstache in its life, but I'd take Lady Pornstache over Aleida's toxic nightmare any day of the week.

Black Cindy is like the total opposite of insufferable for me, in fact she's like my MVP this season.

I think her best scene this season was

explaining why she wants to be Jewish.

I can't even remember too much of last season, and how bad she might've come off during the whole Vee thing. Her character doesn't bother me, and I can enjoy scenes that focus on her.

Daya's mom is the biggest bitch there. I am enjoying Boo and Dogget's friendship. For some reason, it really works. Poor Sofia, she gets stuck inside the SHU for what; to shut her up. I hope that the other women start something about that.

Oh, no, poor Soso!

I can't believe Healy did a truly sweet thing for Red. I was wondering who could be behind those vegetables and when I saw him, I was  absolutely surprised. I mean, even when he was being so nice to Dogget last season, deep down it was all about him and his feelings. But this time it was really about Red's feelings and he wanted nothing in return, not even gratitude.

Poor Sophia too! It was totally unfair. The one who should be in SHU for life is Aleida. Nothing good can come from her. And I'm sorry for that baby. Daya may love her and she'll be possibly a better mother than Aleida -not that difficult-, but she won't be able to be with her daughter. Her daughter will be with Cesar, in that house.

Loved when Taystee realized she was the mother now! I was just thinking "she's like their leader now" and boom! Great. She knows how to handle people and she's a good person; she'll do a great job. I also loved her comment about fan fiction.

I'm sort of glad Boo and Tucky didn't rape that guy. I mean, becoming a  rapist too is hardly the solution. I still think Caputo would have fired the guy; Tucky's bruises were pretty telling.

I just adore that this show is spending half season talking about  crusty female underwear. Is this a first? I don't remember any other show dealing with this subject.

I really loved the Tastee moment too! She is one of my favorites.

Healy..just ugh.I can't even with him even when he is being kind. He creeps me out. He is definitely the stereotype misogynistic prison guard type who has no control in his personal life so gets off on controlling at work.

I'm not a huge Soso fan..I need to see more of her and her story, I think.

Daya's mom just needs to be hurt, badly.  I would be so pissed and upset by now if I were pornstache's mom, whom I love on this show, and found out this was again a lie.

I hope Soso is OK.  Completely idiotic leaving meds lying around like that in a jail.  They are going to get stolen.  Another problem with inexperienced staff to cut corners.

HOWEVER, if she had not stolen the meds and taken them and just overdosed on doxepin instead, if might have been worse.  Doxepin is an old, cheaper antidepressant, a tricyclic.  The main advantage of SSRIs and newer meds than this class is they aren't as dangerouos if you overdose on them.  They dont work any better than tricyclics, but they are safer.  If she didn't steal these meds, she may have just found a way to overdose on the doxepin.  I know they would give her the meds each day, not a bottle to take herself, but she could have cheeked them or found a way to save them and overdose.  The point being TCAs are a better choice in patients that are seriously suicidal or who might OD, as is a huge risk in prison.

And honestly that storyline with the private business taking over the prison is pretty heavy handed.  I get it, they are bad guys that just care about money and the short term.  You might as well just draw long handlebar mustaches on them, have them drinking cognac while stomping on the prisoners and laughing devishly, it would be less subtle than what they have written.

Yeah, but have you ever had a problem in the face of a corporation?  It's happened to me more than once, and I've never been imprisoned.  Corporations give no fucks....  I find it very realistic.  I can relate to a lot of the 'issues' going on with the women in this prison compared to my very privileged life, because I have worked for corporations.

Its not that I don't find it realistic.  There is just no subtlety or nuance to the story they have written.  I just find it cartoonish and over the top.

I definitely agree, though I do love the conversations between Caputo and the new "not warden".  They do a pretty good job of mocking corporate and bureaucratic bullshit, IMHO.

I know that it became news to everybody that Sophia hit Gloria- the other inmates saw it and asked about it- and then everyone started to backlist Sophia, talking behind her back/not going to her salon to get their hair and things done, I think it slowly became a  hate crime because of how people started to treat Sophia.

If the treatment of Sophia started as backlash for Sophia hitting Gloria, how does that translate into a hate crime? Is it just because the victim is transgender?

Link to comment

Yeah I don't think more than half of the women hating on Sophia really cared one way or another about Gloria. They just took the opportunity of popular opinion of Sophia turning sour and let out their hate.

They wanted to see if she had a penis, too; they were trying to make her show them and when she refused, they sounded like they were planning to use force to find out. Definitely a hate crime.

THE GOOD

Taystee stepping up and defusing the confrontation with Red over the corn and then finding out she's the mom now. "Don't make me come back there!".

Red finding the corn.

The hot new girl telling the dumb young guard that this caper with the panties will be a story he can dine out on for years -- and it works!  Not what I expected was about to happen.

Suzanne getting upset about fan fiction.

Healy finding the corn pie on his desk.

Boo giving up her fantasy of a trip to the hospital for Doggett's sake and then the two of them deciding that, all things considered, they really didn't want to rape anyone.

Sophia taking the nun's advice and giving Gloria that look that will haunt her night for weeks to come.

THE BAD

I am grossed out by the dirty-panty story-line.  Please can it just come to an end?

If Pornstash's mom just takes Daya's mom's word about the baby dying, I am going to be pissed.  She's not been depicted as being an idiot, she knows Aleida lied before (not telling Daya about the money arrangements) and if she was going to take the baby then SURELY some legal work has already begun so as to arrange for her to be able to take the baby home from the hospital.  SURELY she will confirm that the baby died -- if for no other reason then to claim the body and give the baby a funeral.  If she just walks away, trusting in what Aleida said, I will be pissed.  I presume she'll find out and by then Daya will have bonded with the baby and changed her mind and decided to . . . what?  To put her baby with her mother's abusive boyfriend?  To give it up to child services?  No, that baby better go to Lady Pornstashe or I'm gonna be pissed.

THE UGLY

The attack on Sophia.

The callous cost-cutting and focus on quarterly results that puts everyone (guards and prisoners) in danger.

Soso's story line

After seeing Mama Pornstache interact with her son I'm no longer so sure the baby would be better off with her. She has a huge blind spot when it comes to Pornstache, and he told her that the baby was making him a better person. You can't tell me he wouldn't somehow be hugely involved in that kid's life, both from prison and once he gets out, and that just can't be good. But Cesar is a terrible choice, even short-term. I honestly don't know what chance that baby ever had in any scenario.

That scene was beautiful as I had never heard the Jewish religion explained like that...I really believed her and secretly I will be very disappointed if it was all just a con.

Its not that I don't find it realistic. There is just no subtlety or nuance to the story they have written. I just find it cartoonish and over the top.

We watch a lot of prison/jail shows in my house and I know corporations can be cheap (because I work for one too), but there is NO WAY they could get around not training the guards and hiring all part-time staff (i.e. cutting benefits--what kind of employee puts his/her life on the line for no health insurance?) UNLESS they really want a prison riot on their hands where lots of people die. They may not get paid a whole lot, but this is not Wal-Mart, you cannot learn to be a prison guard through OJT like you can learn how to stock a shelf with toilet paper through OJT. I believed the part about cutting down on the quality of food and the board room scene was completely accurate, but treating guards like retail employees is absolutely cartoonish, over the top, and BS.

If Pornstash's mom just takes Daya's mom's word about the baby dying, I am going to be pissed. Mom-stashe just can't show up at the hospital the next day after birth and say, "oh Daya promised me the child" and expect the hospital to hand over the baby. In real life, there would have had to have been an attorney involved from the get-go - the prison would have known what Daya's plans for the baby were before she gave birth and would have called the attorney to the hospital shortly after the birth to have her sign the papers. I also don't buy that they let her go through hard labor in her bunk area, she would have been in the infirmary during at least the last week or two of her pregnancy.

After seeing Mama Pornstache interact with her son I'm no longer so sure the baby would be better off with her.

Agreed. But I am 1000% for someone in a situation like hers putting the baby up for adoption. There are many great childless couples (and singles!) who have the financial means to and love in their/his/her heart to adopt a child.

Are you basing this assertion on experience with prisons, or research you've done into prisons, or just on how horrible and crazy it would be if it were true?

Are you basing this on specific knowledge of prisons, or just on general common sense? I'm not trying to be snarky; I'm seriously asking. I've been looking into these things and the more I read about it, the more horrible the actual realities turn out to be. Unless you have specific concrete information about specific prisons and their policies, I think your optimism is unfounded. If you do have that knowledge, I'm relieved to hear it's not as bad everywhere as it is in the places I've been reading about.

Yes. Adoption would have been Daya's best decision, just not necessarily to Pornstache's mom. At the end of this episode I was feeling bad that Mary Steenbergen didn't get the baby until I really thought it through.

Great episode. Sophia being marched off to SHU at the end was epic.

Two of my favorite quotes from the season come from this one:

"She lost faith . . . either that or there's some kind of flaw in our randomly improvised, Norma-based theological system."

Taystee: "You've got to stop using slavery every time you want to justify some foolishness."

Black Cindy: "I'm just using it as a placeholder until I become Jewish and I can pin it on Hitler."

LOLOLOLOLOL. Awesome dialogue.

She really is the worst. She has been shown to be a petty selfish immature shit stirring asshole at every turn. She couldn't even let Daya go to camp without being jealous because Daya liked her camp counselor. It's so sad when people like that have kids and treat them like shit.

Instead of learning from her many previous mistakes, she continues to make shitty decisions for Daya without involving Daya in the process. I weep for another child being raised in Cesar's care in that tiny apartment, and all because Aleida's ego refuses to step aside and let Daya make her own decisions.

At first I thought that Red's special meal was approved by the prison, but once she mentioned having Poussey's hooch there I knew it had to be a clandestine meal. It seemed like a big risk to take. I'm glad that Red countered CIndy's claim that the corn was on prison land and therefore belonged to everyone by pointing out that Cindy didn't do any work to grow or tend that corn.

I like Taystee and I think she has been doing a good job of trying to keep Cindy and Suzanne under control/out of trouble and keeping the peace with Red. I just hope that she isn't the next Red/Norma who gains some power and lets it all go to her head.

Poor Doggett. I really felt for her when she said that she was just sad.

Loved that Poussey wanted to help Brooke (although my first thought when she found her was "Hide the hooch before you go get help!"). I was glad that Suzanne was supportive because she didn't want Brooke sent to psych.

My vast knowledge of prison comes from MSNBC and my sister-in-law ;) Otherwise, I have never been to prison or know anyone who has spent time in prison, but my SIL is a prison guard (I'm going to ask her if her prison is run by the state or a private company).  MSNBC had a documentary about pregnant women in prison once and it showed what they go through to give birth and they were closely watched for safety reasons.  But on just a common sense level, a woman going through labor should be separated in some sort of medical facility.

But I believe that prison is as bad as portrayed on this show, I just don't believe that the prisoners get as much "guard free" time as we see on this show and I think the writers really tried too hard to drive home the fact that corporations are evil (which many people mistakenly believe anyway). I get it, it's a dark humored Netflix series and they must take some liberties to tell a story.  I just found it really distracting and "eye rolling" in these last two episodes in particular.

I don't view her as having a blind spot for him.  I think she made it clear she realizes his faults and his shortcomings.  I think she even stated she has 3 kids and alluded at least to the fact the other two turned out differently than him.  But she is still his mom and still tries to help him, which is the one thing all the mom's have in common.  And while its not ideal for her to raise the child its better than the current alternative.

My friend is a correctional officer and has worked in Alberta and Ontario - so, different country, but same job. OITNB - like virtually all television - is a caricature of a real jail, however; part time COs with minimal training is absolutely a reality.

The kind of person who takes a part time job like this is the kind of person who is hoping that when the company hires full time employees, they do so from the pool of part time workers who have put in the hours at the facility (often this is governed by the union contract). They are workers who have taken schooling or other external training to be a police officer or security guard and want to work in a related field. They are people who hope their loyalty and dedication while at the bottom will help them get hired full time. This is by no means isolated to prisons - this occurs in all fields.

Really liked this episode's recap. I have to say I was always hearing complaints that Sophia didn't have enough material on the show, but I honestly thought it was because she's just not that great an actress. She's fine, but "fine" is not good enough next to Toussaint, Mulgrew, Harney, Aduba, Schilling, Leyva, Stone, Brooks, Moore, Manning, the list just goes on and on. But here? She more than rose to the occasion. I was really impressed and totally agree this performance was a career-best from her.

Elizabeth Rodriguez is another great actress. It's a testament to her that I loathe Aleida as much as I do, but believe her as a crappy human being rather than a thinly-drawn villain. The writers do a great job knowing who she is with all the shades inherent, but in the hands of a lesser actress it wouldn't read so honestly.

  • Love 2

I'm on the fence about Elizabeth Rodriguez. She's definitely a strong actress, and I definitely think Aleida is a crappy person, but I did think we were meant to empathize with Aleida somewhat during Daya's labor, as well as in some of Aleida's scenes with Gloria, and I just could not. The writing in OITNB really pulls out the stops when it wants us to sympathize, and I don't know if the problem is me or the writing/acting. Maybe no matter what the show tries to do, the issues Aleida has aren't going to be sympathetic no matter what. Too narcissistic, and her narcissism imprints on kids and destroys their lives before they have a chance.

Well, I can believe it Lady Pornstache might believe because scamming for money is different than lying about the death of a child. It way more horrible as well. Also, if she doesn't have legal work, she can't claim the baby's body.

After seeing Mama Pornstache interact with her son I'm no longer so sure the baby would be better off with her. I don't think she has a blind spot, but she does feel for her son and wants him to do better, have hope for a better life. He wouldn't be hugely involved in prison, but there is a chance he might be when he gets out. Even then, I think she wanted the baby for her own reasons as well. I think when we first meet her, she understands people reaction to her because of the severity of her son's actions, but she's not going to disclaim him either. So, that's why I believe that her interaction with him is some indication that the baby is screwed. She just wanted to support him in that moment the best way she could.

Maybe it's poor writing and not her fault, but from what I've seen on this show, I find Schilling to be a pretty bad actress.

ETA: So after finishing the season, I see that

the episode about Cindy saying why she wants to be Jewish is the next one after this. While it really wasn't a spoiler in this case, it is confusing to have people reference future episodes.

Everyone in this storyline is awful, but Aleida may be the worst of them. She is manipulative and self-absorbed and only sporadically seems to care about her kids. The only redeeming quality I can think of is that her friendship with Gloria can be kind of cute.

For a second, during the first two flashbacks (Aleida talking to her own mom about camp, and then when she dropped off Daya), I was feeling for Aleida. She had a good intuition about camp that her own mom didn't support, but she sent her anyway. That scene of the drop-off killed. As a mom of kids who have difficulty separating, I really sympathized. Sometimes you say and do things you aren't proud of, usually out of frustration or desperation. But then ...

But then her flashback behavior, destroying the art, and when she lied to Mom-stache. Daya doesn't seem to have any ability or freedom to make her own decisions. Her mom ruins everything for her, and takes all of her agency away. Aleida is a horrible, hateful person.

Yeah I don't think more than half of the women hating on Sophia really cared one way or another about Gloria. They just took the opportunity of popular opinion of Sophia turning sour and let out their hate.

This storyline is kind of amazing to me, considering Caitlyn Jenner and the events of this summer. To some extent, I'm not surprised by the confusion and suspicion of the women who suggested that Sophia was taking the easy way out by being in a women's facility. These are some of the criticisms of Caitlyn--she's "playing at" being a women; she's enjoying the privileges of being a women without paying any of the dues other women have had to pay, etc. So to see this onscreen was powerful to me.

Unless there's another time I'm missing, Cesar didn't rape her, statutorily or otherwise.  Aleida accused her of sleeping with Cesar, that pissed off Daya, so then she did sleep with him (and I think possibly dated him as well) just to piss off her mother.

I think it is clear that Healy is in love with Red. I think he got a Russian mail-order bride because he is in love with Red; he was hoping to get someone like her. I love their chemistry - their sweet interaction. When Red was playing Healy, leading him on by flirting with him to get her kitchen back, I felt sorry for Healy, because I knew he was hoping for something more. I really like Sam Healy. I think that his reasons for being the way he is - and for his weaknesses and frailties - come from a truly disastrous childhood with his clinically insane mother.
