Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

The Politics Policy is still in effect. A participants social media is NOT an invitation to discuss their political view points. Consider if discussion of certain social media posts will cause you to violate the politics policy BEFORE you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

Tim is panicked because his flight to Texas is cancelled. He goes to the airport and stands in a long line to beg for a ticket, which is not available. Instead of rescheduling for the next day, he hops in his car and drives 25 hours (30 with catnaps) to get to Texas. To get on a "fairy." To go to an island. To pose on the beach for a weird family photo.

Given all he went through for this to get to Best Mama, it makes me wonder what the punishment would've been if he hadn't been able to make it - and what Jill could possibly take away from him that she hasn't already.

I couldn't stand to read every word of Tim's blathering. But. Spirit Airlines has been experiencing a massive system-wide meltdown with a significant percentage of their flights cancelled. See this tabloid story: https://nypost.com/2021/08/05/spirit-airlines-expects-flight-cancellations-to-continue/

I can believe that Tim couldn't get another flight either on Spirit or another airline, because even if the next Spirit flights had not been cancelled, they were full. And, because of the Spirit flight cancellations, all seats on other airlines' flights were also booked.

[Edited later to add: @BradandJanet has informed us below that Tim actually knew before going to the airport that that his flight was cancelled and he said he tried to rebook, so I stand corrected about that but I'll leave this paragraph in as I wrote it although I was wrong on a premise.]  If Tim didn't realize his flight was cancelled until he showed up at the airport for it, he was so far behind the curve that he couldn't book a seat on any flights out probably for a few days. All seats had, I'm sure ,been grabbed by savvier passengers who'd been keeping track of flight status on their phones or 'puters, and jumped to change their plans as soon as they got the news. (I'm not the world's savviest traveler but I still remember a trip, before smartphones, when I walked to a gate for a connecting flight in a big airport far from home - and saw the status sign that it was cancelled. There were a lot of us who'd walked to that gate. Almost everybody else started trooping back to the airline counter. I sat down, pulled out my flip phone, called the airline and got a seat on the next flight out. I suspect not everyone who walked down to the counter got a seat. Just saying. When flights are cancelled and you need to book an alternative, time is of the essence.)

Tim really was up against it about getting a flight, but he was stupendously stupid and reckless as to how he decided to deal with it. I like road trips but I hate to think how many dangerously tired drivers are out there on the roads. Urgh.

Another parenting fail for Best Mamma Ever.  I have zero plans to fly anytime soon, and I would never fly Spirit. But, I know that Spirit is having a week because I actually consume mainstream media and have a smartphone with a Twitter account.  Tim needs to know what is going on in the world if he is to be a part of it no matter how small.  And checking to see your flight is still happening the day of before leaving the house is taking a flight 101, especially when you have to drive out of your way to get to the airport.

The shutdown of Spirit and the lack of flights in and out of Cleveland has been one of the top stories on the local news.  Too bad Tim isn't allowed to watch TV or listen to a radio station or he might've found out about the problem before he went to the airport.

I presume he is not allowed to install apps on his cellphone without Jill's permission either and that's why he didn't install either the airline or the airport's app which would've notified him of the issue well in advance, too.  We know he couldn't possibly be allowed to access a computer by himself either, he is only 21 years old.  Heck, Jill probably made the flight reservation for him (using his money, of course) and told him when and where it was happening.

I can imagine Tim's panicky phone call from the airport to tell best Momma evah that he couldn't find a flight to Texas.  I am sure she immediately commanded him to get his a** down there pronto and perhaps even ordered him to  hop in the car and start driving.   Jill wouldn't give a dam* how long it would take or how much sleep he would lose. Momma wanted him there for the photo op and probably to impress David Waller with the obedience of her adult children.

To me, this sad tale just highlights the lack of agency and autonomy Jill's kids have.  Staying awake  for a day and a half on a cross country drive was less scary to Timbits than telling Jill he couldn't come.

Tim was notified the flight was cancelled. He tried to solve the problem by phone and online without success, so he must have some access to the outside world. He hoped showing up at the airport would answer his prayers. It didn't, but at least he collected his refund.

Jill says she plans to have yearly "real" vacations with the entire family, and this is the first. I don't think Tim would dare not to show up for the big event. I doubt Jill takes disappointment well. Tim and Nathan will be paying for a lot of the meals and admissions too, so that's another reason Tim needs to be there.

Would Jill admit she told Tim to drive to Texas? We may never know unless her mouth gets ahead of her.

It took Tim 30 hours to get to TX. Couldn't he have just booked a flight for the following day and got there around the same time? And what was the urgency anyway? He was going to miss a photoshoot? Now, if he does still have his job, he'll need to leave early to drive back.

He just put a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on his car, too.

What a load of crap. If anything not having social media will give her a leg up. I can’t name a college that looks into social media for admissions, and it’s the only sort of thing that gets you kicked out or excluded from consideration.

Tim should just boot from the family. I always wonder if they realize once they hit 18 they can leave. In any of the fundie families.  If you can get a hold of your birth certificate and the clothes on your back it’s best to run.

SGirl is 14 and unusually not interested in social media. It’s a relief to us because we were prepared for a battle of wills if we told her no SM at her age. We had to contact one of her teachers when she required the students to have an Instagram account and post weekly. Nope, no way. The teacher was surprised SGirl wasn’t already on several SM platforms like her peers. SGirl was her only student without SM. The teacher tried to talk us into an IG account. No, no way, SGirl was only 13 years old. We reached an agreement where SGirl would create the content and send to the teacher instead of posting. The teacher’s last email to us was a good luck getting SGirl a college placement without SM. We will take our chances. SGirl is starting high next week in an engineering program, is a competitive swimmer, has a 4.0 during a pandemic, and is taking guitar lessons. No, she doesn’t need SM.

We do realize that once in HS she will engage in SM. SGirl’s reluctance is on our side. The one thing we won’t make her do is use our SM accounts to post. I think is bizarre how grown ass adults MUST post on Jill’s account. We opened a High School account for SGirl. She is going to pay for her school gym clothes, spirit shirts, field trips, and any other miscellaneous things from that account. No need for Mama and Baba to be there. Of course the money comes from us, but at 14 it’s a baby step towards independence.

Sorry about rambling, I feel sorry about the adult children in cults. Here we are working on independence for our daughter at 14, and she has more self autonomy than a grown ass man.

How does SM help with college admissions?

I had problems with bullying and gossip in middle school. I can’t imagine how traumatic it would have been with social media.

Oh, good to know and thanks for telling me. I really should have waded through his post before going off on a rant.

But it is true that "he could have just caught the next flight out" was not really an option, IMO, based on the big issues that Spirit airlines is having.

I agree.  I like to think that if I had been unfortunate enough to be born into a cult, I am headstrong enough that brainwashing wouldn't have worked on me, not to this degree, anyway.

These poor souls really don't seem to have a prayer (pun intended) of breaking free.  How utterly sad.

I went back and reread Tim's post and I can't shake the feeling that the only satisfactory answer Tim wanted from the airline was him getting to Houston.  The refund was a bonus.  I cannot imagine the representative at Hopkins did anything more than what customer service would have done on the phone.  Best Mamma Ever expected Tim to be in Houston, so Tim went to the airport to make that happen.  Now some of this is going to be due to Tim being in his early 20s and not having the life experience to know he was going to get the same result in person as over the phone.  None of us knew this at his age.  I'm sure he was a mess trying to figure out how to get his ass down to Texas before Jill has a meltdown.  If he really was up for 18 hours before setting out on his roadtrip (I think Timmy is exaggerating here just like BME taught him), then that would also effect his critical thinking skills.  Hindsight is 20/20, and maybe Tim will now know that he should have multitasked and called Spirit while en route to Texas.  He would have still gotten his refund, and he would not have wasted so much time and money.

I see BME and I know it means Best Momma Ever, but I just think Bowel Movement Extraordinaire. I guess it's not that different in the case of JillRod lol!

Yeah, I find it really telling that Tim was more concerned with getting to Texas on time, even though there was no real emergency involved, than in waiting for the next available flight to show up even if the next day.

I know a 15 year old girl that has banned from social media by her parents until she’s 18. This world has been in place her entire life. She is healthy and well adjusted. No one needs social media, especially at their age is. I Porn out to the teacher that she (the teacher) grew up without social media just fine, as did every other parent.  Social media is not the best idea for mental health, especially for kids. I would spend a lot of time letting your daughter know how fake and meaningless it is. Lots and lots and lots of examples. And let her know she’s pretty much going to get bullied no matter what she posts. Just not worth it to me.

Jill R just posted some pictures and videos on Facebook about a vacation house they stayed in. It looked pricey to me. There were videos of the kids swimming in the pool in street clothes and of the exterior of the house. All were blurry and she always moves the camera so quickly it gives me motion sickness.

Never end a sentence with "at". This woman is homeschooling her children.

Actually, I think most English teachers have finally abandoned that silly rule. Jill's writing is undeniably weak, but it in my opinion it would only be worsened by awkwardly shifting the entire prepositional phrase to the end of the sentence. ("The church at which we parked" is weirdly formal for the context.)

One good rule of thumb that's worth holding onto, however, is to omit a preposition at the end that isn't part of a prepositional phrase. For example, it's just "Where are you?", not "Where are you at?"
