S06.E06: Alive Day

Recommended Posts

Great episode!  Definitely made up for last week's less-than-stellar one.  A lot going on (all of it good) and a lot of the characters moving against each other.

-I felt bad for Choo-Choo.  Sorry to see him go.

-Another great Raylan and Boyd scene.

-Rachel and Art!

-Zacharius is yet another guy who wants to kill Boyd.

-Sam Elliot continues to rock this part.

-I laughed at the "This guy was strong as shit!" line in regards to Choo-Choo carrying Brad Leland's character up the hill.

I am so tired of Ava's storyline. In the last two episodes, her scenes seem like placeholders that do not offer anything to the storyline, and take up precious seconds that could be used by Raylan and Boyd. I don't care about her dad's death or her defense of staying with a man who beat her, and the only thing in that two minutes that had to do with the story was her defending Boyd not being like Bowman to her uncle. I actually find Zackariah's story more interesting.

I see no point to her flirtation with that kid on Boyd's crew, and am kinda tired of waiting on a payoff down the road. Next week's preview looks to be Ava-centric, and I hope we get some kind of wrap on all these little things, because I really just want to fast-forward through her scenes. She went from a woman who did bad things and was in love with a man who did bad things to a sniveling, afraid of her own shadow, about ready to break at any moment petulant child.

And then there was the rest of the episode that was great. Choo-Choo and the escort had better storylines. Raylan/Boyd, Zackariah/Boyd, and Limehouse/Boyd were enthralling.

Oh, Choo-Choo.  Kind of figured you were destined to die.  I just wished you would outlive Sea Bass, but that was not in the cards.  Way too loyal to the wrong people, and you pick the wrong time to listen to your conscience.  Maybe you enjoy your time in the afterlife with Dewey.  I'm sure you two would get along perfectly!

I am curious about what this means for Avery.  I'm sure Ty will survive the shot, but if he's smart, he's getting the hell out of there.  Even if the marshals don't get him, does he really want to go back to Avery, after that big fuck-up?  So, will Avery need more back-up, now?

So, Zachariah is totally trying to kill Boyd.  Get in line, buddy.  You might have to wait a while.  Who am I kidding, Raylan will just cut in line and do it himself, if he could.

Always great to have Tim tagging along.  Yay, Tim!  And Rachel and Art!  That was nice, but I do hope Art bows out gracefully, and they just let Rachel stay as the big boss.

Still building up Raylan vs. Boyd.  They better deliver by the final episode.

Katherine is now prepared to kill Avery.  When the shit goes down, I just hope Duffy knows when to back away, and just let nature take it's course.  This could get dangerous for him, if he meddles too much.

That final phone call... what is Limehouse's game?  Will Ava's luck finally run out?

RIP Choo Choo. I really felt for the guy already (and I was kind of surprised that Scott Grimes' character was such an ass to him - you'd think that if anyone would be sympathetic to an injured vet, it would be a fellow vet) but his conversation with the escort was so sad, especially combined with his comment to Raylan later about how taking orders is all he has. He knows that he is seen as slow and stupid so his only value to the group is his size and strength. His hesitation to kill her because she didn't think he was an idiot got him killed.

Although there were some comparisons of Choo Choo and Dewey, the difference is that Dewey was always convinced that he was smart while Choo Choo knew that everyone thought he was dumb. While I appreciate his self awareness, it's a lot tougher to go through life knowing that everyone thinks you're a moron (as opposed to Dewey thinking everyone else is a moron).

I am so tired of Boyd being so territorial about Ava. He might as well have peed on her leg. If my husband started touching my thigh while I was making dinner or wrapping his arms around me to prove a point to some other guy, I would be pretty annoyed. Then he made that stupid comment to her bodyguard about bird dogging her. I had a jealous boyfriend once (notice it was only once). After that I was like nope, not having any of that. You just have to accept the fact that other guys are going to look but know that I'm not interested in them. I know some girls find it flattering to have a jealous boyfriend. I find it annoying and suffocating. Hee, I did love when Ava finally asked if they could cut the southern hospitality bull shit.

The look on Boyd's face at the end was scary.  Walton Goggins is excellent.

Raylan/Tim were hilarious.  "He's my realtor."

So was Art's advice to Rachel, let Raylan handle Boyd and then Raylan will go to Florida and be out of our hair, or was it let Raylan bring down Boyd AND himself?

I loved that we finally got some of Ava's story not tied to the Crowders. I loved the bond between she and her uncle and I bet he's going to do his best to kill Boyd, especially if he finds out Boyd might kill her first. And I think he just might succeed where others fail. I loved that Ava recognized she was young and too stupid to listen to reason about Bowman. I remember being that young and stupid too. (No, I did take Ava's path. We just went our separate ways when he found several someone elses)

Damn, not Choo-Choo. Sea Bass is a pain in the ass and annoying as all hell. Why not him? I loved the scenes between Choo-Choo and the girl and was glad when he spared her. Shades of Colt - another character I loved but knew was going to be short lived.

I got lots of Art and Tim and I have always liked Art and Rachel scenes. I figured Limehouse would be calling Boyd - you don't double cross Limehouse.

Katherine is getting annoying now. I would laugh my ass off if they discover that no one turned snitch on her late husband and she did all this for nothing. Even sans mustache if Sam Elliot gave me a rock like that and swore he couldn't live without me, I'd swoon. I do wonder if Avery wanted to marry her to keep her close - as in keep your enemies close.

I'm really loving this last season. They are playing to the series strengths and I've almost forgotten about the rest of the stupid Crowes. I'll always remember Dewey.

Wow, I thought this episode was excellent.  Very sad about Choo Choo, but am glad that he didn't kill the girl.  Things are going downhill for Avery.  And Raylan looks as good as ever.  Loved many of the interactions.  The coal mine scenes were intense.  What a dangerous occupation and Boyd really showed his hesitation.  I was on the edge of my seat during the Boyd rescue.  I was sad when Zachariah pushed the other guy down.  Like some others, I am over the Ava drama, but anything that gets Raylan and Boyd in the same room/same scene is good.  I can hardly wait for next week.

At first I thought he was planning ahead and wanted to marry her so that she couldn't be forced to testify against him due to spousal privilege. But after he said he wanted her to come clean about being a snitch, I thought he was just using the proposal to get her to confess so that he would know for sure and then kill her.

Aww, I was hoping Choo-Choo would last to the end of the season. (Cringed a bit at the car on the tracks, on account of a similar thing happening in my neck of the woods not too long ago.)

Yeah, I'm thinking calling Sniper Marshal Tim a 'sidekick' is something that will be held against you in a future encounter, tempting though it may be.

Kudos to the sound effects crew who made that mine shaft sound very deep indeed.

Great episode but I agree with some of the others that the Ava thing is getting old (for yet another season).  I'm not the least bit surprised about Limehouse and she shouldn't be either.  She was reckless and stupid last week and deserves him turning on her.  I don't know what she expected him to do--especially after she seemingly ditched Errol in the hardware store.

I felt really bad for Choo Choo but felt even worse that he couldn't manage to be hit by a train (even though it's a dick move to kill yourself like that when the train engineer is likely to die too).  And even creepy Ty garnered some sympathy from me when he was talking about how he didn't want to kill Choo Choo--Gilluhunt is great in this role and I hope he somehow sticks around for another few episodes.

Tim, as always, was delightful.  For some reason the line about Choo Choo hiding behind a coat rack still has me giggling.  And I was terrified through the whole shootout that he was going to get hit.  I'm sure my neighbors loved me yelling, "Don't you do it--don't you dare kill Tim!" at the TV.  As happy as I am to see him every time he pops up on the screen I spend that time worried for his safety.  I am hoping though that he's the one who kills Sea Bass.  And Ty for that matter since Ty called him a dick a few weeks ago.  Raylan can have Boyd, but let Tim get the rest of them (as long as he lives--seriously, show, don't you dare kill Tim.)

Really enjoyed this episode.  Limehouse calling Boyd was unexpected and delightful.  I'm glad we haven't seen the last of him yet.

Sorry, Choo, the show already has a somewhat endearing half-wit bad guy: Mikey.  Size doesn't start with a 'c', indeed.

In honor of Mikey, my husband and I have played Scrabble all week. Alas, I have yet to be able to use 'Aplex'.

Didn't Boyd and Tim wind up playing Scrabble last season? I bet that was a great game.

I just realized that the guy who plays Limehouse was in Streets of Fire. I only remembered him from Forrest Gump.

I really liked the suspenseful elements of this episode.  Boyd, un- ironically wearing his hipster glasses and almost dying in the mine, was terrifying.

I now have a feeling that Boyd's red shirts are going to fall one by one, and that somehow the endgame will be that  they'll pin it all on him.

The look on Boyd's face at the end was scary.  Walton Goggins is excellent

Once again, I'm sick of the Ava storyline.  I thought about why, and  for me, it's because she doesn't remind me of a typical Elmore Leonard female character.

She's not like Jackie Brown or Karen Sisco. (  I wish they brought back Carla Gugino one more time-- she was great in her one episode) Katherine Hale is more  inline with what I think of as "typically Elmore Leonard"  With Ava, I do think that this has more to do with the actress, than the character. Something about her just grates.

I agree.  I've never been a big Ava fan despite the pumping up she (or rather the actress) gets from Yost and company.  Of course I wasn't particularly impressed by Alica Witt as Wendy Crowe (or in any of the other things I've seen her in).

I did enjoy the episode and it was great that we got to see all of our marshals in one show.  Heck, we got to see Raylan, Tim and Racheal all together!  I love how they've been using Tim as Raylan's partner this season.

Alica Witt is probably a good actor but personally, I can't stand her.  It now results that if she plays a "good" person as a role, I'll dump the program.  Not sure if it is her facial expressions or the bags under her eyes.  There is just something about her I do NOT like.

I can't believe how fast the hour goes every week!  Limehouse's call to Boyd makes so much sense.  If Ava is trying to run, Limehouse knows his operation would be in danger if Ava talks about his stuff.

Great episode but, I swear, I just have to look away whenever Avery is on because as good and menacing as the character is, I just can't stand to look at his upper lip.

I'd like to feel bad for Choo Choo but I can't because he slapped the fuck out of Calhoun.  That just wasn't right.  I'm glad the poor girl survived though.

Being called a sidekick was a step up for Tim - last time he was in a scene with Avery nobody acknowledged his presence at all!

Why didn't Zachariah just fail to save Boyd? I don't think the other guy would have seen it as suspicious since he didn't when he saw the neatly sawn off boards?

For me its the way she talks, and I have never noticed as much as I have this season. I don't know much about the actress, so she may from a holler in KY, but the accent sounds completely fake and awful and the sing/songy way that her voice rises at the end of a sentence, making everything sound like a question, just distracts and bugs me in every one of her scenes. I don't think she is a bad actress and I don't even dislike Ava, but ugh. Has she always talked like this?

I love Wynn Duffy and want him to be the last one standing, much like a cockroach.

I'm not convinced Boyd's going to turn on Ava next week. I think he ends up giving her the chance to come clean and tell him the truth, especially because it looks like Winona comes back and the writers really seem to want Raylan to end up with her in the end. Plus, Ava's still so wishy-washy, defending Boyd to Zachariah even while she's trying to turn him in. She just doesn't know what she wants and I have always found that annoying on TV shows. I'd prefer decisive female characters, whether they make the decision to be bad or good, just make the pick. I thought she had for the last few years, which was why she was more tolerable, but now she's just annoying and weak willed.

I agree about Ava's sing/song accent being annoying, but the thing that also annoys me is her haircut.  It's something about the way her hair swings when she moves her head.  I've seen that cut on other women and it doesn't bother me as much as it does with Ava.

Link to comment

See, I'm dreading the return of Winona. I hate her. I hated her bouncing back and forth between Raylan and Gary and I hated her stealing that money from the evidence room and putting Art in a jackpot because he caught her and Raylan putting it back. The only time I remotely liked her was season 4 when she and Raylan shot Picker's men in the nursery.  She'll be fine with who Raylan is - or claim to be - for five minutes and then whine and stomp off again. I think what really bothered me was the way she made him choose between saving Loretta and her sticking around.

I hated the Ava in jail storyline and I don't much care for Ava being like a scared rabbit, but I've always liked her better than Winona. I guess its just a matter of personal taste.

"...you know how these henchmen all mumble." Word. And that's why I have to watch the show with closed captioning, which is the only reason I know Mr. Handsome's character name is The Pig.

Also, what y'all said about the Ava storyline and Tim. Much less and much more, please!

The actress who plays Ava doesn't speak with an accent. I've hated her accent since the first season, probably because I live in Ohio near the KY and WV borders, and no one talks like that. I saw an interview with her and the interviewee asked if she worked with a speech coach for the accent, she said no, she's originally from Georgia and it came back. Her accent is definitely part of the reason I don't like the character very much.

Ava is better in small doses, when she is playing off someone else.  I also thought Winona was better in small doses. She always seemed to be in trouble that only Raylan could help her with, even though she was married. She seemed to know him better than everyone but Art, though. So, she was used to give the audience information about him, usually when calling him on his crap.

Both Ava and Winona didn't really fit the Elmore Leonard mold for strong female characters, but had more screen time than Rachael.

Edited twice because my grammar sucks this late.

It's irritating to see Ava fall back into some old habits, but is it fair to excuse all the epic self-destructiveness & dumb-assery Raylan & Boyd have been guilty of while dismissing their leading ladies as whiny bitches? Ava's characterization seems as consistent as any of the men-folk. (I'm a little defensive because I'd sure be more like Ava than Katherine or Loretta if I was being squeezed like that. Let's just remember that to survive in Harlan, you have to become Arlo, Bo Crowder or Mags 'I'll kill any 13 year old in my way' Bennett.)

Meanwhile, watching the man who went toe-to-toe with Danny Crowe wigging-out in the mine makes me love Carl even harder!

And, lest we forget, last night it sure does seem like Limehouse might have decided to take himself a turn ratting out Ava (whom he likes) to (as far as he knows) her white-supremacist boyfriend just 'cause, so not really catching a break from the misogyny factory... Though I liked it better when it seemed as if Ava was poised and ready to become Helen.

I also think Carter's acting would look better if she wasn't juxtaposed next to the likes of Goggins and Olyphant.  I quite liked her fighting back tears at the first sight of her uncle.

Poor Choo Choo. Kudos to the writers for adding some pathos to what could have been a one-note character. He had a surprising code of morality and ethics that made him a poor fit for the henchman business.

Are we supposed to believe that Ava and Raylan slept together? Or did their interactions stop at that one kiss?

People are questioning LImehouse's motivation. I thought it was clear that Limehouse was promised big money by Ava, and she stiffed him. He warned her not to cross him so this is payback. He's teaming up with Boyd because he still has hopes of getting some of the money.

According to Graham Yost, a lot of this came from what the actor, Duke Davis Roberts, brought to the part:

Let's start with Choo-Choo (Duke Davis Roberts), who met his end this hour. Hearing Seabass refer to him as "dumb" was tough to take. Did you always know that Choo-Choo could be a character that would elicit that kind of response from viewers?

No, it was almost entirely due to the actor. It's just one of those things we've been blessed with on this show: an actor pops, and you just want to write more and more for him. I will tell you, there was almost an uprising on set with people saying, "No, no, you can't kill Choo-Choo! No! Bring him back!" Because he was just a beloved character, and the actor was just beloved as well. But for story purposes, we needed to start the unwinding of this particular coterie of Markham's henchmen.

The car scene with Choo-Choo and Calhoun's escort, whom he was ordered to kill, must have been a tricky one to write: There needed to be an instant connection that was believable.

It needed an instant connection, but the connection goes deeper than whatever's between them. It's more Choo-Choo and his history. You get a little more glimpse into the weight that that carries for him, and that sense of before and after things happening in life and the desire to go back. For him, it's going back before the IED went off, but it's also now he's here in this situation. This is where his life has gone, and boy, he wishes it was different. He didn't require much humanizing because, again, the actor did such a great job making Choo-Choo this interesting character, but it added a level to it.

The Tim and Raylan partnership is made of win! I'm just sad that they waited until the last season to do it.

I think Ava is doomed. Anytime they spend that much time on a character, they are doomed.

Then Raylan will have even more motivation to kill Boyd. I don't have the Ava hate like some. She has made some bad choices, that doesn't make her a bad person. I think her character is very "real". There are a lot of women that make bad choices and stay with bad men.

While I was bored to tears with the "Ave in prison" storyline, I am totally engaged watching Ava now. I think the actress is doing a good job. While her accent may be a tad more Georgia than Harlan, it's not bad (I'm from KY originally) and there are plenty of people who talk in that singsong manner in the south. I find her character believable in this setting. Yes, she did dumb stuff, but she's in a tight spot right now, and I'd be scared, too.

Poor ChooChoo. Props to the actor who made us "like" the tragic character. Loved the irony of him deciding to die on the tracks, only to have the train stop. Well done, show.

Elliott and Steenbergen are delightfully evil.

And Walter Goggins just keeps on bringing it.

After the horrible miscasting of the head Crowe last season, they're totally back on track in my mind. I will be so sorry to see this show wrap up, but I can't wait to see how it plays out.

Word.

Are we supposed to believe that Ava and Raylan slept together? Or did their interactions stop at that one kiss?

I personally don't think they did.  Ava looked pretty far into that dinner she was making and she was so anxious to get it done before Boyd came home I doubt she'd stop for a quickie.  Or if Boyd had caught Raylan coming from upstairs instead of the kitchen then maybe I'd buy it.  IMO I think Rachel and Art (and probably Tim) are supposed to think Raylan was dumb enough to sleep with her again because that's a totally Raylan thing for him to do.  This season it feels like Raylan is trying to be more by-the-book and no one's expecting it--like when Rachel was surprised he wanted to build the case against Boyd slowly.

Although, Raylan didn't seem to want to tell Tim how he got Ava back on track....  Does Tim know Ava tried to run?  His comment about Ava working for them again made it sound like he knew what happened but wouldn't he be obligated to tell Rachel?

Zechariah wants to kill Boyd because he's a Crowder and Bowman beat Ava.

Always, Always more Tim. Snarky Tim is made of win. He's been my TV boyfriend for six years now and I'll miss him but its been fun.

I loved Choo Choo too. I think the actor and the writing did a great job of endearing some of us to him - especially after they killed Dewey - my all time favorite pain in the ass.

I don't think Ava and Raylan went farther than that kiss. I do think it gave Raylan the idea to stick around and yank on Boyd's chain and also to get a feel for the relationship between Ava and Boyd and to make sure she was safe. It was pretty slick move IMO. Boyd did everything but pee on her leg (as someone said upthread) and any suspicions at that point were forgotten.  I almost wanted Ava to whack him with the frying pan for pawing her like a piece of furniture.

I knew Limehouse was going to get Ava back for that double cross. He told her as much when she showed up.

I loved that Art, Rachel and Tim all concluded that it was highly likely that Raylan slept with Ava to get her 'back on track'.

The crime set in Harlan better hope the price of coal doesn't go up again.  Too much pokin' around in those tunnels could lead to a lot of unfriendly questions.  Then again, the more enterpreneurial ones could buy up a few tunnels and diversify their income.
