Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

Women who post their maternity photos in which they are half-naked. I know someone who is having a baby soon and she posted a picture of herself with her shirt unbuttoned (or maybe no shirt on and just in the bra) and her pants undone. If you’re going to take these kinds of pictures, keep it between you and your husband; I don’t want to see you on social media with half of your clothes off.

Someone I knew had a "gallery" of photos in the hallway from her front door to the living room.  They were black and whites (therefore tasteful?) of her and her baby, both naked, in various poses, including nursing.  Really not what I want to be looking at on my way into dinner.

Culture Check: How can we acknowledge the advantages some groups have because of their backgrounds, and work on creating a more aware and understanding relationship with them?

This is a pinned Moderator Note at the top of this subforum.  Can someone explain what we're supposed to do with it, and why it's on the Pet Peeves forum and not the other general ones like Chit Chat?

I've read all the explanations about the new regime and mission goals and inclusivity and didn't understand it in the abstract, and still don't understand it now that it's being applied specifically.

Are we supposed to discuss acknowledging advantages some groups have because of their backgrounds?  And if so, I'm supposed to work on understanding their struggle with their advantages?

To have the that assignment  for this forum makes no sense.  It simply doesn't fit within the context of Pet Peeves.

I don’t understand it for peeves, either.  Maybe the site as a whole.  I’m fine with that.

The way I understand the recent culture guidelines posts, this was thoughtfully placed in this forum specifically. I think of it as a soft warning/reminder related to forum interaction expectations that may be heading in the wrong direction (if not already in violation) and to be more mindful of how our posts/replies may be viewed or received by those of differing backgrounds.

Some discussion has triggered this moderator message being placed here.  Whether recent or general forum review, I couldn't guess.

Regarding the culture shock thing:  so I’m no longer allowed to talk about a peeve I have with older (immigrant) family members who don’t respect my boundaries or how my idea of boundaries don’t fit someone whose family has been been here for generations because it’s not appropriate?  Or that I’m too “colonized” to want to set boundaries?  All of this gives me a headache.  Wait, am I even allowed to say that?

Just the whole "culture check" thing confuses me a lot.  Some things put me in the so-called "mainstream" while other issues do not.  And I have never thought I was ever marginalized in any way (people seem to expect me to think that I am due to ethnicity).  I actually dislike that term when it applies to ethnic background unless there's a very specific disadvantage, like language (e.g. my late grandparents needed the help of my parents to navigate some specialized medical services because they didn't speak English well and a specialist in the specific area they needed care for wasn't available in Cantonese (their primary care doctor was a Cantonese speaker)).

My problem is that the differing background the post mentions is people who have advantages due to their backgrounds, and we're supposed to "work on creating a more aware and understanding relationship with them."  Why do these people need to be coddled, and more importantly, HOW do we create a more aware and understanding relationship with them.  And what is an "aware relationship"?

I went to college back when tuition was a couple of hundred bucks a semester.  Hell, law school was like $350 a semester at a top tier school.  My parents paid for it and I've never had any student debt.  That's definitely an advantage due to my background (and the luck of timing).  What steps are y'all supposed to take to create" a more aware and understanding relationship" with me?  (Leaving aside the WHY I need to have more special treatment when I'm already skating on my advantage.)

Moreover, what good would it do to highlight this advantage in any discussions with me, other than to criticize me by saying, "You have no idea what a burden student debt is."  How would it even come up?

This culture check, especially without any reference whatsoever to what caused it to be pertinent here, is just gobbledygook to me.  I literally do not understand it.  I don't understand why it's here, I don't understand who the beneficiaries of the policy who are being singled out are supposed to be, and I definitely don't understand what people are supposed to comply with the culture check.

A sentence with "don't" in it is much different from one without the "don't." Argh.

This.  While tuition was much higher by the time I went to school (though lower than American schools...I think tuition for me, including room and board was probably $15-18K (Canadian) at most in the late 90s/early naughts), my parents paid for all four years and part of it for grad school (thanks to a scholarship and living at home).  And yes, despite that, I'm told the exact same thing you've been told.  What about trying to understand how my immigrant parents worked hard so they could provide that for me?  Or how my dad grew up only a few notches above the poverty line in post WWII Hong Kong and still managed to get through not only high school, but undergrad and two master's degrees, including an MBA which took him almost too long to earn?  And how he was able to climb the corporate ladder to a high executive level in finance?  Why only tell me that I'm an "over-privileged (private school) brat?"  I get that I'm much more advantaged than a lot of people, but maybe take the time to understand how my family got there?  And how their bilingualism DID put them at an advantage (rather than tell me that my family needs to "decolonize?")?  The criticism only separates us rather than bringing us together.

Actually, nobody's ever told me that I couldn't possibly understand student debt because I never had it.  I was just searching for an advantage I have and used my parents paying for college and law school as an example.

Frankly, if someone DID tell me that, I'd just ignore them.  For one, it wouldn't happen because I wouldn't wade into student debt discussions except to try to brainstorm how to fix it.  But if they took offense at my trying to fix it, I'd again ignore them because I personally don't believe people have to have a lived experience in order to understand something.  They can believe otherwise.  I don't care.

Why only tell me that I'm an "over-privileged (private school) brat?"

Actually, that's the sort of thing that clearly is prohibited.  As it should be--it's just rude and doesn't advance anything.

My problem with the culture check is that it puts people with advantages into the same category with people with disadvantages, and tells us (I think--I swear I don't understand it) to acknowledge the advantages due to their background.  What good does it do me for you to acknowledge my advantages?

So that's dumb, but even dumber is the mandate to create a more understanding relationship with the people with advantages.  I just don't understand why there needs to be a rule about dealing with people with advantages.

Or maybe they ARE addressing people calling others over-privileged brats?  If so, why does it have to be couched in such touchy-feely terms?  Doesn't "don't be a dick" cover that, without treating people with advantages as a special case?

I know I keep stressing and panicking in advance about real-life things, so I'm now gonna try to do what others keep telling me and stop worrying before something actually happens. Maybe it's just a just-in-case note, because I can't remember anything mentioned here for a long time that could cause it. One of the directions said that problematic threads would be marked in different colors and I keep looking for colors and don't see anything in none of the subforums I visit.

If this is about some reality shows about real people that cause heated discussions, I hope nobody would be so mean to tank the whole forum because of few toxic people. Most of us come here to discuss fictional characters who won't get hurt or offended even if we snark about them or call them idiots, because they are not real people and don't have real feelings. (Which is why I like to debate them in the first place.)

A general statement but sometimes it just seems real hard to find middle ground on anything for me with other people these days.

As usual, I blame social media. People got used to the idea that we have to have an opinion on everything and be ready to passionately defend it. The idea that we can care about some things more than about others and that's ok seems to be lost on some people. I can think of few examples where it's got way out of hand, but that's better left unsaid.

Yes. I think we desperately need to get back to the mindset of, it's okay if you (general "you") don't have an opinion on every topic under the sun, and if you genuinely don't know what's going on or genuinely don't understand a particular topic or issue that's being debated, you can simply just...not say anything.

I have to admit, if what is being ask for is being forced to admit that I have had certain advantages that people of other backgrounds might not have is a hot button issue for me, so I hope no one expects me to do it.  Because those people usually just can't fathom what it was like for me to grow up and live in the Bronx in relative poverty compared to other people "like me".  For half my life I felt hated and reviled for whatever I was that other people weren't.  I needed a bodyguard in Jr. High to survive walking the hallways.  I had to walk close to 2 miles each way to school to avoid getting beaten up on the city bus.  And there was no protection for me from getting mugged along the way, which did happen.  I had to walk in groups with other kids to avoid it.  None of us had moms with minivans to drive us there.  That wasn't a thing back then.

I think people "like me" are in a very small category and deserve some understanding from the well intended people that think they see things from their proper perspective.  Because nobody sees my perspective but people like my husband and the close friends I grew up with from NYC who all had similar experiences.  Plus, being a woman in and of itself deserves some special category in my opinion.

Also, I was poor by today's standards.  My parents came from nothing after their families lost everything in the Great Depression.  My mother had to work full time when all the other kids' moms stayed home.  It was survival.  Despite all the so-called "advantages" I had, most of them didn't do me any good in the big picture.  Granted, since I left the Bronx for CT I see where people like me have had advantages.  I am probably more cognizant of them than most people because of where I came from.  But people up here can't possibly understand my perspective on this.  When they go "wah, wah, wah" over life's difficulties I say to myself "What are they complaining about?  They live in freaking paradise!"

I am thankful for whatever my "advantages" were that made it possible for me to live here even though it did not come easy and it was a struggle to get here every step of the way.  It wasn't handed to me and my husband and we still have to fight to keep it.  For all the advantages I keep getting told I have had I have arguably had more disadvantages for any number of reasons that have not let me enjoy those advantages very much.  And I hate it that I'm not allowed to be unhappy about that or talk about it.  Instead I am supposed to "admit" my advantages in certain ways so other people can feel better.  OK, but what about all those disadvantages I had?  I feel like that doesn't count.  Look, I don't want to take anyone's disadvantages away from them because for sure they are valid, just recognize mine too!

For example, I am jealous of women today.  I was discouraged from pursuing certain careers or sports and treated like a second class citizen when I was young.  We think things were equal for women just because a big thing was being made about it in the media back in the '70s and '80s but that was not the reality.  I will not list all the ways I was discouraged and passed over for opportunities because of this, not to mention the pitifully low salaries I was offered despite having a college degree and later a Master's!

And being of split ethnicities made pretty much everyone see me as an "alien" because back then most people were ONE THING.  I was 4 things!  If people don't think that mattered back then it did, at least where I grew up.  I knew a lot of people that had cultural advantages from being a member of a certain ethnic group with a network.  I was a member of no such group.  I didn't have that advantage.

Oh, and I know I have complained about my college tuition debt here before, to the tune of what would be about $40,000 in today's money that I had to pay off while working in low paying jobs compared to the cost of living in NYC, which has always been frightfully high.  Now everyone is sympathetic to the young people who are paying over half their incomes in rent - Not that I don't have sympathy for them, but welcome to my world, it was always that way for me when I lived in NY!  And even when I left NY it wasn't much better given the cost of living in the entire NY/NJ/CT area.

I'm not quite sure what kind of peeve this would fall under, but it's driving me absolutely nuts. Over the weekend, I was scrolling through Netflix and saw Beverly Hills Cop (March 31 was the last day to watch before it was dropped); still hilarious as ever. So I thought I'd watch the sequel, which is on Paramount+.

Here comes the peeve: for some technical glitchy reason, there is audio commentary that describes each scene and what the characters are doing before we hear them speak. For example, when the movie launches with the rocky mountains and stars? Automated voice is telling the audience this is the Paramount logo and stars.

After texting with them, I was informed it is an ongoing issue and they are "soooo sorry for the inconvenience" and that I will get an email once it's resolved.

Yeesh.

I was tempted to say I would like a credit to my account charges until this issue is resolved since I am unable to watch and enjoy whatever movies/shows I wanted to watch.

Being asked to complete customer service surveys right after a brief call when nothing has happened to resolve the issue yet. Am I supposed to say excellent service just because they picked up? Let me at least get an email regarding the next steps or whatever.

We had that issue too. Not only did some channels have the weird ass descriptions but some channels were only in Spanish. They had to come out and fix it and the guy gave us this whole hard sell on all these upgrades that he said we simply could not live without. PPV being his pet hobby.

I've had that happen as well.  Pretty sure it was Paramount+, maybe also MAX.  But I could change it back to normal English through the audio options.  For some reason, some shows kept defaulting back to Descriptive Audio or whatever it's called (basically the equivalent of closed captions, but for people with vision issues).  Hasn't happened in a while, though (knock on wood).

I  tried changing the the audio option to "off" as well as turning off the closed captioning. No luck. The agent did inform it was an ongoing issue that the engineers were working on to fix.

Yeah, that has happened to me a few times on Paramount+.  Netflix is terrible about defaulting to dubbed versions of foreign language programs, so I have to change it to the regular audio with subtitles, but at least that's somewhat consistent.  Why P+ occasionally and seemingly randomly (I've even had it happen on just one episode of a series) defaults something to audio description I don't know.  Apparently it not turning off is a new issue, but I haven't experienced it (yet?).

Maybe I didn't describe it quite right - might have been "language"?  Anyway, it wasn't an on/off option, it was more like English/English Descriptive Audio/Spanish/etc.  My P+ deal has run out at the moment so I can't check and every streamer has it set up slightly differently (of course).  But if you've gotten as far as the agent/engineers, it's obviously not something on your end.  (Maybe they were trying to fix the bad default and made things even worse.)

I had an issue on hbo, with the screen going dark.  It happened on Amazon, too, so I don’t know if it’s my Roku, or the channels themselves.  On prime, I had an issue with the subtitles being in German, even though I had them set to English.

Yeah, it's on their end; I saw something about it this weekend.  And I just pulled up Scorpio's movie, BH Cop II, to check, and indeed -- when you pull up the audio options, it's the regular English that's checked, but it's the audio description version that's playing yet there is no audio description version listed.  Normally when this happens, it's simply been defaulted to the audio description, so when you pull up the audio options (it's the same menu option as subtitles; they're all together under captions) you see that one checked, change it to the regular version, and are good to go.  But something weird is happening now.

There's something about the way I walk that makes water on the ground sling up onto the top of my left foot, soaking the mesh and my sock.  It'll do it on the right foot, too, if I walk normally, but even if I walk really slowly and carefully and try not to flex my ankles, water gets slung on top of my left foot.  I can't figure out what I'm doing to cause it.

I once got descriptive audio in a theater.  I'm mostly deaf so it's really hard for me to hear where sound is coming from, and I kept thinking someone behind me was talking.  But I was the only one in the theater.

It was an Italian movie, so the people in the movie were speaking Italian but I could swear I was hearing English.  After about 15 minutes I finally figured out it was descriptive audio in English.  But the voice was not only describing what what was on the screen, it was reading the subtitles out loud.   While the regular soundtrack was playing.  I thought I was losing my mind.

FWIW, there's a forum about streaming services, and people are pretty good about trying to help everybody figure out how to get streaming to work right.

Oh, I know about the forum--I've posted in there as well. This particular issue was driving me nuts, since as stated above, Paramount+ is aware of it and working on it. There is just no workable solution to get rid of it, hence my posting here.

The water on top of your left foot is being splashed from the water on the back bottom part of your your right foot when it moves by your left foot. If you change how you move your right foot it will cause the water to move differently.

I went through the same thing a few years ago. I started paying attention to how I placed each foot down because of differing foot issues. On my left foot I put more pressure towards the left of the bottom of the  heel and on the right I put more pressure towards the right of the bottom of the  heel. I was noticing different shoes making more pain so now I pay attention to the heel feel when picking out shoes.

eta I pick up the inside of the heel on my right foot first and do a little swoop and that causes water to go on the top left and some of the middle inside ankle but I pick up my left heel straight.

Once I started paying attention to my foot patterns I was able to “fix” some pain in my feet and also the muscles in my legs. Even(!) some muscle issues on my side just by paying attention.

I’m not feeling well, and I have to get a few things prepared, just in case our weather is bad later.  Someone said that most of Ohio has a torcon 7 warning. Moderate risk of tornadoes, big ones, and if moderate is red, I don’t want to know what high risk would be.

Tomorrow will be a day you need to prepare for... A 4/5 risk for severe weather across ALL of Central Ohio, mainly for 3PM - 10PM Tuesday. A moderately high chance for tornadoes, & a higher risk to see intense, long-tracked ones. Large hail and strong, damaging winds also...

That was on twitter. Clouds all day, would apparently be good for us, and lower our risk, so here’s to hoping for clouds and rain, and for a sunny day next Monday, for the eclipse.

I’ve just spent the last few hours half-asleep, in a watch party with a lot of people, watching Babylon, which was a lot.  I didn’t like it or hate it.  I’m not awake enough to make the banana bread I keep putting off, but I’m going to do a small laundry load, empty the books out of my backpack, and put some clothes and essentials in there.  Fully charge phones and iPad.  I can use an old phone for a torch, if needed.  We’ll probably be fine, but I’m not looking forward to 3pm on.

Sorry everyone that I went off when my hot button was pressed.  It's just that I have a thing about never feeling welcome or included in most group situations in my life and it's a genuine pet peeve of mine when I'm always asked to do things for other people but feel like it's only a one way street.  I want everyone to feel included and welcome everywhere, so it's not that, but other than a precious few people in my inner circle, no one's gone out of their way to make me feel that way.  Except perhaps here, and I'm not just saying that.  I just want all of you here to know how much I appreciate you!

Being asked to complete customer service surveys right after a brief call when nothing has happened to resolve the issue yet. Am I supposed to say excellent service just because they picked up? Let me at least get an email regarding the next steps or whatever.

Moreover, I can't stand that they ask you whether you would recommend the company to a friend.  It's the kind of thing that you don't go around talking about to others.  Let's say it's the cable company . . . does anyone go around recommending their cable company to others on a regular basis?  As in "Wow, I just had this amazing service call, so I'm calling to let you know you should drop everything and go sign up for Spectrum."  Huh?  But they all ask some form of this question.

I think most people tell negative stories about companies, not positive ones, so I think the surveys must be designed to find out who will be badmouthing the company, but it's worded in reverse.

High risk would be a 9, 10, maybe even an 8. The day of the massive tornado outbreak on April 27th, 2011, that wa a Torcon of 10. That day it wasn't so much IF you'd see a tornado, more a matter of WHEN.

But yeah, I'm watching the Weather Channel right now and seeing them talking about how bad today might get in your neck of the woods, so I hope you and everyone else in the path of these storms stays safe, and I hope it doesn't wind up being as bad as they're predicting.

Add the annoying emails they send you afterward continuing to badger you about filling out their survey to this peeve!  And they won't stop either!  I'd block them but they're companies that need my email address because I do business with them.

You know I wouldn't feel so bad about it if there was any evidence that they actually responded to criticism with improvements, but these days there is even LESS evidence of that than ever.  In fact, just the opposite!

THERE WAS AN ANT IN MY BED LAST NIGHT!!!!  Well, technically, ON the bed, as it was on the bedspread.  It died, but I had to strip and re-make my bed (at bedtime!) to make sure it didn't have any friends.

I almost drove off the road when one crawled across my finger. I considered putting Terro in my car for a minute.

I no longer participate in these "surveys"...mostly from medical/dental practices. They're annoying.

Yes. I think we desperately need to get back to the mindset of, it's okay if you (general "you") don't have an opinion on every topic under the sun, and if you genuinely don't know what's going on or genuinely don't understand a particular topic or issue that's being debated, you can simply just...not say anything.

Haha, tell this to the people on Amazon who answer product questions with, “I don’t know; I returned it” or “I don’t know about the size large; I am a small.”

I realized today that the phrase “I’m just gonna steal a fry” is super peevish to me. Not because I am opposed to sharing my fries or anything, just because it’s so stupid.

And another is people assuming that my boyfriend isn’t “allowed” to eat meat because I don’t. I don’t know if they’re kidding or what, but it’s annoying.
