Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

Vanifestos.  It turns out there’s a whole Reddit dedicated to them. There is a guy who has one, in one of the local cities, but he gets around

Passive-aggressiveness.  Vague-booking.  Sub-tweeting.  It hasn’t been happening to me, but I hate seeing, anyway.

I'm happy to report that I have no idea what you're talking about.  (Well, I know what passive-aggressiveness is, but in the context of these other things.)

Here's a question: what happens to the money someone paid to Visa and gave to me as a Visa Prepaid Card? It was good thru 7/20 and I'm an idiot for misplacing it (but I figured, hey... it's paid for so the money should still be there waiting for me to use it). Does the money go back to the gift-giver? Or does Visa keep the money?

I get contact dermatitis from lots of things. I paint the underside with clear nail polish. Sometimes two coats. Skin rash and itching gone.

Speaking of … My poor Son in law has been itching and rash here n there all over his body since before Christmas.  He hasn’t torrent a good nights sleep since.  Sometimes, his eyes blow up and itch also.  He’s been to 3 Dermatologists.  Now, has to go to an Algerist.  What could it be?  Not eating or touching anything out of the ordinary.  Maybe the Covid shots I’m thinking?  What could it be all of a sudden.  He hasn’t gotten a good nights sleep for months.  I feel so bad.   @Mindthinkrpls pm me if you have any idea what it could be.  You are a Nurse after all.  These doctors just give him different creams.

I have no idea if this will work, but I'd call the number on the card and ask.  They may send you a new one.

The funds don't go back to the purchaser and who wants Visa to keep the money.  Not me!

We're having the most gorgeous weather so it's difficult for me to come up with a peeve. I can barely walk or control my bladder anymore so I guess those are mine.

What do you mean exactly?  If you don’t mind.  At a certain age, I think we all have some problems, unfortunately.  I never get a good nights sleep anymore.

People who send group texts in the early morning for non-emergency reasons or mundane conversations. I don’t care if you text me and my siblings at 7 am on Sunday because you need to tell me Grandma is in the hospital and may only have 24 hours left to live. (My grandmother is currently alive and well; this was a hypothetical.) But sorry to the church choir director, you don’t need to send a text at 7 am reminding everyone  to be to church at 9 for practice, especially if that was already known earlier in the week. Or this morning, I woke up to a conversation on a group thread I was on for an event I volunteered at yesterday. Everyone was still talking about how great it was and the kid volunteers were so great. It’s not that the kids aren’t great but I don’t want my phone going off when I’m barely awake so you can gush about your kids.

People who show off in an over-the-top way. The event I volunteered at was a Bingo fundraiser for the church, and one of the volunteers won two gift baskets. She was literally dancing her way up the aisle and dancing back when she accepted them. It made her look so obnoxious. I didn’t see any other big winners get up from their chairs and dance in front of the whole room and it really annoyed me. My mom said oh it’s just the luck of the draw and I shouldn’t be mad. Then the same lady almost won a THIRD basket but they were one number off. I was so grateful because I didn’t want to see her dance around again and show off in front of everyone. Just go pick up your prize and sit down; otherwise nobody cares. And yeah…it does kinda suck in a way because I really never win anything or win at Bingo while some people can haul home multiple gifts and prizes.

Controlling the bladder.  Lately, I’m up like four times a night.

I was there about 5 years ago. Then I tried using tampons to slow it down and that worked for a while. Now I have to wear pads. I use Always pads because the minute I stand up, if I have to go, I'm already going. I still get up at night because no matter what they claim, you're not going to continue with the same pad after it gets wet, that simply does not work. I felt bad about it at first but then I remembered that I have been putting pads and plugs down there since I was about eleven. The joys of being a woman.

Hopefully, the allergist will do the patch tests. They're super annoying* but they typically can find the issue, whether it's food, something outdoors, or an ingredient in a soap or another kind of skin or cleaning product.

*Especially if you are allergic to the adhesive of the actual patches -- that was a fun 2 days.

@kristen111 🤞🙏🍀 that they find out asap what's causing his misery. If the doctors can't figure it out, maybe try one of those homeopathic specialists. A former hairdresser kept getting sick & no one could figure out why. I believe she went everywhere, had tests done...nada! So I had to move on to another hairdresser as she was ill, no longer accepting appts. We were no longer in touch. A couple years later, I called a wig shop to schedule an appt (wanted a wig just for the heck of it). I was stunned when the person who answered said she was my former hairdresser. She said she finally went to some type of homeopathic specialist for help and was told the chemicals in hair dyes were causing her to be sick. She quit the profession and became a vegan or vegetarian...and got well.  She looked great & was so happy and relieved to be healthy at long last.

For months during the fall and winter, my hands were peeling and were chronically dry.  Even the prescription cream I got wasn't working.  I thought about it, switched soaps and BINGO, things began to get better!  Funny thing is this:  My shower gel is from the same brand as the hand soap and it hasn't affected me.  Must be something specifically in the foaming soap that was giving me issues!

I put my phone on mute and leave it in another room so if it lights up even that can't bother me.

And unfortunately, some people need frequent reminders for things like early morning choir practices or medical appointments, including day of.

I also don't answer any calls coming from numbers I don't recognize.  If it's important or relevant, they can leave a message and I'll listen right away.

Yep! Enjoyed about a year after menopause only wearing a panty liner.  Then had to start wearing heavier pads for bladder leaks.  At least HRT is keeping the hot flashes at bay.

Yes, probably.  There are new ingredients in laundry soaps also and people are feeling the difference.  It’s good you did your own investigating.

As I get older I get more sensitive to everything from soaps to shampoos to makeup, laundry detergent, etc., etc.  I am always looking at ingredient lists and looking online for websites that discuss common problem irritant ingredients in various products.  I have had to switch brands with a lot of stuff in the past couple of years because of that.  For me, the problem is often the fragrance. I have had to switch to fragrance free makeup and facial products but I have no reaction to fragrances in products I put on the rest of my body.

Also, what one person is sensitive to may not be what another is sensitive to so that makes it more complicated.  And companies are always changing their formulas and putting new problem ingredients in them that I have to watch out for.  And our bodies can become more sensitive to some ingredients too.  So it's a constant issue for me.

I've found this website very helpful for makeup and skincare products of all kinds:

https://incidecoder.com/

Here's an example of a foaming hand soap.  It lists all the ingredients, explains them and what they do, and even flags the ones it considers problematic or prone to causing reactions.  You have to click on "more" to see the entire list.  When it calls something "icky" you know it might be what's bothering you:

Well, guess I’m not there yet.  No liners yet.  I only feel the urgency, then go into the bathroom and about 8 drops come out.  If the bladder dropped, the doctor would have told me .. right?  Lovely.  Guess more surprises to come.  Hope our Mod isn’t a guy, lol. 😅

Oh who cares, guys are human beings with bodies too. If you feel the need to pee and only a few drops come out, that sounds like a UTI to me. Time for some Cipro?

Antibacterial soap causes the skin to dry a lot more than regular soap.

I was so irritated with myself several months back when I realized the Kirkland (Costco brand) dish soap I'd picked up was a different formula than what I normally use, it's a combo dish soap and hand soap, antibacterial.  I don't want to use antibacterial soap, but it took me until the bottle was half empty to spot "antibacterial" on the label.  And it's not in small print, either, but in my partial defense, I don't use that big bottle nightly, I fill a pretty green glass bottle that sits out on the counter, put the jug under the sink, and only pull it out for refilling -- at least I wasn't looking at it every day and still failing to see the word right there in block print.

Nope.  Just was at the Urologist for a dialation.  He always takes a sample.  No UTI.  I go like every 5 months for dialation.  That’s lots of fun ..NOT.  It’s a stretching of the Urethra.  With 4 or 5 instruments one at a time.  Yikes!

It wasn't anti-bacterial soap I had issues with.  It was that specific brand of HAND SOAP.  I guess they use different ingredients for their shower gel.  I had issues with some of their shampoos as well (gave me bad dandruff).

We have a fax machine at work solely because of that. It's ridiculous. I often have to instruct students and sometimes younger faculty on how to use it.

I don't think this is still the case, but not too long ago young people had to send their signed letter of intent regarding the acceptance of an athletic scholarship which obligated them to attend a particular university or college for a year via fax.  This caused some coaches to sweat it out waiting on a national signing day to hear from a particular athlete, who was scrambling to figure out what a fax machine was and where one could be found.

I remember the office where I was working in the early 1980's had a contract with a business located about 5 miles away to use their fax machine.  It was a big deal with the office purchased their own fax machine.  I remember how annoying the thermal paper that had to be used in the machines then was.  I'm not sure when machines that used regular copy paper arrived, probably about the time we all started using email to send documents back and forth.

Fax machines are considered to be more secure than email/computer systems, just as landlines are considered more secure than cell phones.

Grocery shopping has become horrible enough, as I try to balance cost vs convenience vs quality at the different grocery stores in my neighbourhood.  A national chain in Canada (all Canucks will know which one I mean), installed multiple self serve checkouts while leaving only 1 staffed checkout, maybe 2 at absolute peak times.  Now they have realized that facilitated theft, so they have installed locked gates, plexiglass barriers, locking cart wheels, receipt checks and security guards.   That wasn't enough, so they moved to limit the number of items at self serve checkouts, presumably because a full cart made it easier to hide unpaid items.  The kicker is that the signs say "25 items or less".   It's "fewer", you morons.  Fewer.

If it's what I think it is, then it depends on the store.  The one near me is a small, independently owned franchise of said chain and doesn't have close to the kind of security other people mention.  Locking cart wheels isn't unusual for downtown Toronto - Whole Foods has had it as long as I could remember.  And the first WF came to town 20 years ago!

I think it’s more about manpower or something else like that (or maybe even language barriers, judging by the phone reps; it’s difficult sometimes). For one thing, my previous providers have online services. And this current provider links to actual health info and claims, you just can’t get customer service/administrative help online.

If there are secure online portals that doctors use to communicate with patients about actual private matters (and it’s great; I rarely ever call an office!), surely an insurance provider can allow a customer to contact them online with mundane policy questions, even if it’s just a message that prompts a rep to call on the phone. Security concerns or not, writing a paper letter to an insurance company about a pressing coverage matter is not at all efficient for the customer.

Clumsiness.

I'm expecting a delivery and since I live on the fifth floor, I need to get notifications on my phone, which has unreliable coverage and sometimes goes to voice mail instead of ringing as a call.

My phone just pinged, so I leapt up in case it was the delivery guys leaving a message, not wanting to risk them leaving before I got downstairs.

Of course, my laptop shot off my lap, straight down onto my toe, which now hurts like hell, elevated or otherwise, won't bend and is bright red.

I'm used to my elbows and shins being bruised long after I've forgotten what I bumped, but now I have to worry about toes?

Naturally it was a cold call, and since I answered, they now have a phone number belonging to a live person to harass and with a number to sell on.  Double peeve.

Ah damn, I'm sorry about that. One time I was Christmas shopping and I had an ingrown toenail (gross, I know) and I picked up a bottle of Champagne and instantly dropped it directly on that toe. I swear, I saw stars, just like in the cartoons. Fortunately, the bottle didn't break.

Mr. ebk dropped a computer (desktop processer) on his foot sometime last year resulting in a broken foot.  I hope your toe is not as badly hurt!  However, don't wait a month before going to the doctor if it doesn't heal.  Not that we have experience with that here at the house...

Yeah, @Ancaster, have it checked when you can. I still have no idea what initiated the broken foot bone that ruined a large chunk of 2023 for me (including, and I am not even remotely kidding, what I believe is a bit of PTSD to this day; I even hate just talking about it here). Because I hadn't experienced much pain outside of the couple of days that prompted me to go to the doctor, the doctor thinks it was a minor thing that became exacerbated due to my lack of staying off it (because of the lack of pain).

Meanwhile, my friend Rob had his foot run over by a car recently. He was bruised and in a decent amount of pain, but not broken! WTF?
