Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

One of the cats buries his spongy toy in the litter box when he wants it washed.  He knows I will take it out of the litter box and wash it with soap and water until it is clean.  I just wish he would put the toy in the bathroom sink.  I don't like panning through cat litter for cat toys.

Your cat is smarter than my two combined. Or I'm already very clear on my duties and anticipate their every need before it arises. In that case, I'm just better trained.

I would just throw it out.  And probably not get him a new one.  In which case he would probably just fire me and get a new maid.

I'm in the process of mostly cutting out processed foods. It ain't easy! But I am starting to see a change in my cravings which is awesome. I'm also drooling less at all those food porn commercials, which is another pet peeve of sorts, because there is no way that the burger I get from the McDs drivethru looks anything like the one they are showing on tv!

I know what you mean!  I began my new world of eating in June, 2019 and food is so different now!  Cravings did change and foods I used to enjoy eating now don't taste the same - in anything they taste terrible!  Weird isn't it?  I can't eat fast food anymore anyway - makes me feel sick which is very telling!

My mums dog has us all very well trained. She has a stool we call the "cookie stool". When the dog gets up on the cookie stool we give her a cookie. When I dog sit I try to fight against this training, only give her a treat if she's actually done something worthy, but I always end up giving in, if only to get her off the stool on which she will stand until she gets her treat.

I often wonder, who is the pet and who is the owner in many a pet "owning" family. Most of my friends with pets are also basically the slaves of their four legged tyrants.

Elaine ate the cake

Ha - I immediately thought of Seinfeld, too.

I forgot another reason I'd never do the "save the top tier for a year" thing (well, beyond the fact I'd never get married in the first place) - I wouldn't have room in my freezer.  I have one of those old, basic fridge/freezer units with a nice-sized refrigerator and a freezer that is just big enough for my typical use - and thus too small to add a cake.

Which brings me to a peeve:  I'm hoping to finally remodel my kitchen in the next year or two, so from time to time I peruse appliances, and I am annoyed that I've never come across a refrigerator (at least one that isn't jumbo sized; I can and will fit a larger one than I have, but I can't go crazy) that has the amount of crisper space I want, particularly in the side-by-side layout I prefer.  Most of what's in my refrigerator is produce.  Other than when I have a lot of leftover containers, the shelves are less than half full.  I don't need more shelves, and I don't need giant pockets in the doors (I don't have gallon milk containers or 2-liter bottles of soda).  I could use a little larger deli drawer for when I get particularly cheese happy, but first and foremost I need lots of crisper drawer space.

I am also irritated by how many refrigerators no longer have white among their finish options.  I don't want stainless steel; I don't particularly care for it in general, and it's not at all the right look for my kitchen.  I'll probably have to go with a panel ready model (where you can make its doors look like your cabinet doors).

I definitely want a panel ready model for my dishwasher, which is my final kitchen remodel peeve -- the dishwasher I'd get if I was choosing today is not panel ready.  But Bosch seems to be getting better about it, so hopefully when the time comes, I'll be happy (because I definitely want a Bosch).

I know, first world problems.

What a great thread! I love reading about everyone's wedding experiences! After a dear friend wound up living on Valium for several months due to her completely over the top traditional wedding (engineered by her socially ambitious parents) I knew I wasn't going that route.

My engagement party having been derailed due to an unnecessary quarrel between my parents and my fiance's parents over the guest list, my fiance and I decided to take over the wedding entirely with the idea that we would have a very, very inexpensive ceremony and celebration and the funds saved by my parents and his could go towards our three month honeymoon tour of Europe (not like a Grand Tour - more like the $5 dollar a day version albeit with nice Eurail passes on the continent). This trip was combined with my spending a month in London at the British Library doing research for my master's so the blatant fundraising was a tad less tacky for being "educationally" justified.

So the pet peeve part here is that we did have a lovely wedding cake - two tiers and yes, being hippies, it was a carrot cake with real cream cheese frosting (still my favorite cake - and no nasty pineapple bits, thank you very much). The restaurant where we had our family wedding dinner (there was a wild party with all our friends, which we joined later) carefully packaged up the top layer of the cake for us (we were under the impression you save this for your first wedding anniversary celebration) and my aunt, previously not a candidate for such a major crime, made off with it at the end of the evening and I never saw it again. Do not covet thy neighbor's wedding carrot cake people! This same aunt neglected to contribute to the only thing we wanted (money for the trip - yes, we were real clear when people asked since we were not registered anywhere (do people still do that?) and gave us a silver plated platter of complete uselessness.

Just to be clear, you didn't have the wedding your parents thought they were paying for, and you "kept the change" for a three month vacation?  Your aunt's "crime" seems pretty insignificant by comparison.

That sounds painful.   When I was a child I used to get spanked/slapped a lot.  I can only imagine what tongs would be used for.   I hope no yanking or pinching is involved.

They're very handy for things that have rolled out of reach or have been shoved to the back of a too deep cupboard or appliance (see your next post!).  Only the yanking and pinching of non-sentient articles!

We actually did save ours, froze it (properly), and it was delicious!

Back in the day when wedding cakes were traditional fruit cakes, the custom was to keep the top layer for the first christening.  So only 9 months old at best!  No freezing necessary with a proper fruit cake.

No, no - we never told our families we were having a traditional large wedding and kept the money...it was all entirely above board with both families the idea of NOT having an expensive wedding and specifically asking people NOT to give us presents but instead money to fund the time abroad. (I needed to go to London in any case to finish my master's thesis) I think my parents spent $500 on the dinner and everything else we paid for ourselves (including our matching Tibetan white cotton wedding garments - remember: hippies). We got married at the rock quarry (now amphitheater) at UC Santa Cruz for those of you who know it...went back for our 40 wedding anniversary and had a celebratory dinner at the same restaurant as our wedding dinner just to come full circle.

(Quoted ineptly from above):

"Wow. You have some terrible family members who should only exist in fictional comedies.
But I love your wedding cake!
"...being hippies, it was a carrot cake with real cream cheese frosting..."
Clearly you and your marriage have thrived despite your spiteful relations. "

You are entirely and completely correct! But despite them all we were married joyfully for 41 plus years - my husband having preceded me (hopefully) to Heaven last Thanksgiving.

Oh, it's so worth it. I started that process, one type of food at a time about 5 years ago and the taste of most processed food is now just terrible. The only thing sometimes is chips but even there only expensive kettle baked chips. The others just don't taste good anymore. And everything is just too salty. Or disgustingly sweet.

I have a stainless steel refrigerator, but I have a feeling in 20 or 30 years we are going to look back at them like we do the old yellow fridges from the 80s, which my parents also had at the time.  "Oh my god whoever thought that was a good luck!"

A friend of mine back in the day was told that she could have a big wedding that her dad would pay for, or she could get married the cheapest way possible, and the money that was to be used for a big wedding could instead be used as a down payment on a house.   She wanted the big wedding.  She said after the fact if she had to do it all over again, she would have gone the cheapest route and used the money for a down payment on a house.

Given that so many marriages fail, I am not sure why anyone would want to spend big bucks on a wedding.  Yes, I know, most people don't go into a marriage thinking that it will fail..  Still, somewhere around 40% end in divorce.  I read the 40%  percentage on the internet so it must be true.  Apparently the divorce rate is dropping from somewhere around 50% of marriages end in divorce..   I do wonder if the divorce rate will spike due to the pandemic.

Blood pressure pills give me a dry cough.

Fourth pet peeve.

I have never tasted a wedding cake that didn't taste like sawdust.  I don't care how much wet spackle (frosting) you put on it, a dry cake is a dry cake.

The only bad wedding cake I've tasted were ones with fondant.  I hate fondant.

Pet Peeve: Dieticians who just want to promote supplements which may or may not benefit the client.  Or they recommend diets that's actually LESS healthy than what you're already eating/assume that you don't eat healthfully.  I take medication which is known to spike one's cholesterol.  The dietitian I spoke with suggested that I eat things I already do, and assumed that I didn't eat "well."  I told her my normal eating plan and she seemed surprised.  Then she suggested supplements.  Ones which were sweetened.  I asked her whether there were unsweetened versions and she thought I was crazy.  UGH.

Is it an ACE inhibitor?  When my mom was switched to Lisinopril, she immediately developed a dry cough; it turns out, that can happen with ACE drugs (I think it's around 20% of patients who report that side effect).  There are so many blood pressure medications out there, you shouldn't have to suffer; tell your doctor you have "the ACE cough" and need something different.

I hate it too. I used to watch to baking competitions but had to quit and just stick with The Great British Bake Off because of the horrible so called "cakes" constructed primarily of Rice Crispies treats and fondant. Not only are they rotten examples of baking, they're an indefensible waste of food.

I only had wedding cake with fondant once. It was like chewing gum. Good grief...I've seen beautiful wedding cakes, none of which used that wretched crap. Why do they keep using it? Unless using fondant is the only way they can create those odd-looking cakes (e.g., the top layer is tilted). Sheesh....just think of what that gunk does to one's intestines.

Probably so they'd have a white cake, even though the frosting inside is, say, chocolate.  I don't get it either.  And fondant is way, way worse than gum.  You can chew gum.  Fondant gets stuck on teeth.

I recommend this.  It helps one to sleep and it can safely calm nerves.  I've used it and it really does take the edge off without having to resort to prescription meds and it won't interfere with any you currently take.

ITA.   I have heard stories from people who saw "dietitians" who were fat and out of shape but telling them how to eat!  Unfortunately I've seen many doctors of various disciplines (even veterinarians!) who recommend foods and supplements because they're little more than sponsors of said product;  not necessarily because it is beneficial.

I had a doctor suggest that I eat ice cream to gain weight.  I was ready to say "I know you probably LOVE ice cream, Lady, and you're super-jealous that I'm skinny, but you're a professional, and suggesting that I eat SUGAR rather than, say, hummus, is probably NOT a good idea."

Wow. That’s pretty old school in addition to not being the best idea.
When my mom was a girl in the 1930s the doctor told my grandmother to feed her ice cream because she was thin.
Then, in 1952, when my mom was suffering from depression after her mother died, a doctor recommended she have another baby.
And then, in 1963, when my sister had been suffering from bulimia for 2 years, the prescription was a puppy.
I like to think health care has advanced since those times.

ETA: None of those remedies were effective.

She was kind of old - maybe in her mid-60s.  But would a boomer-aged doctor suggest this sort of thing?  She would have been in med school in the 70s.

They're not.  Even my primary physician admitted that he only had about 4 lectures total in all of med school!  He was in med school in the 80s.

Unless the vet is an holistic one, they may not recommend raw meat diets (like the prey diet or BARF diet) for pets either.  This surprises me since dogs were wolves once upon a time and cats are obligate carnivores.  I know that when I fed my dog a raw diet, her health improved immensely and I'm certain it helped extend her life (she made it to 15).  Before that she still ate meat but it was cooked.  Still healthy, but less so in my research.  My independent amateur research was preceded decades before by Dr. Pottenger.

My mother was a dietitian for 25 years.  My cousin asked her for a good diet plan.  She said,"Fill your dinner plate with as much food as you want.  Then, just before you get ready to eat, put half of it back."  He said that advice always stuck with him and actually worked for him.

Mom pooh-poohed supplements and said people were only using those to try to find an easy way out.  She always ate healthy and wasn't one for huge meals and was more of a healthy snack grazer.  She did love sweets and never deprived herself of them but kept those in moderation.  My brother and I drove her up the wall because we thought fruits and vegetables were the work of the devil.

From what I accidentally learned* from Dr. Michael Greger (delightfully nerdy nutrition guy and vegan advocate), general nutrition education is still almost nonexistent in med school today. Probably why so many doctors are said to go right to Rx meds as opposed to suggesting lifestyle changes first? I don't know...

* Accidentally because when I quit meat, dairy, etc., I didn't do it because of health reasons, but I did want to at least make sure I had the basics covered and wasn't doing it "wrong." Learning about some health stuff just kind of happened as a side effect, haha! And I love Dr. Greger now.

FFS! I'm doing a Dimensions cross stitch kit and there isn't enough of at least one color of floss to complete it. But the kit is supposed to have enough floss! That's why you buy a kit! Dimensions helpfully says "contact us if you need more thread"... because their thread is ever so special...and then gives no directions about how to do that. Down at the bottom of one page there's a web address, so I dutifully search for it...and no floss except in bunches. I need one damned skein! Why is this so hard? I used their email contact form but the site does not encourage optimism.

There are several conversion charts online and I've found a DMC match more or less, but of course can't find that anywhere either except for $5.62 on Amazon. Floss costs about 50-75 cents a skein. If there wasn't a pandemic raging, I'd pop over to Joann and look for a match. But 1. Dimensions should supply it 2. I should be able to find it online at a reasonable price, and 3. pandemic.

I have all of the peeves today, starting with freaking shingles on my FACE.  It's just a small patch right now, but it hurts!  And it's annoying!  And of course it's in a spot not covered by my mask!

Second peeve -- not being able to see my own doctor and having to go to an urgent care place.  The co-payment there is more than at my doctor, and they should call themselves non-urgent care.  I had to sit in my car for about 40 minutes before they called me into the building, where I got to wait some more.  I was there slightly more than an hour.

Third peeve -- my pharmacy is about 10-15 minutes away from the non-urgent care place.  You'd think they'd be able to have my prescription ready by the time I got there, but I had to wait another 15 minutes for that!  I really hope the meds help -- my face hurts!

Thank you for the info about the doctor.  I read up on him, he is an interesting dude.

You are welcome. I don't know why I love him, but I do! I think it's the way he talks. I also read his book How Not to Die. It's not what you'd call a burning page-turner, but he does explain nutrition in a very accessible, non-textbooky, normal-person way that kept my interest for the most part (and it's easy to skip the chapters you don't feel like bothering with). I gave my old-school (and fraught with various health issues) dad a copy and he was pretty into it (though very upset by some details about pork and pig farms).

Today was a peeve-fest, man, not the least of which was Petco. I did curbside pickup after struggling with the malfunctioning website for so long that some of what I wanted was out of stock by the time I checked out. Then, when I got there, they gave me my cat food and litter in 3 overstuffed bags--which are notoriously flimsy, by the way--all tightly tied together by the handles. So, I had to one-arm a 30-pound clump of bags into the house and up the stairs, all the while praying they wouldn't break until I was at least indoors. Then I had to rip them apart to get the stuff out! Who there thinks this is a good system?!

ETA: And, oh my god, when I posted a photo of the tied-together bags on FB with a sarcastic "Thanks, Petco," my uncle had to comment "Just go to the store!"--probably because he assumed I did curbside because of COVID paranoia. I WAS WORKING; I took a break to do a couple of errands and didn't want to take a long time! Jeezalou. And, regardless, what the hell is wrong with making one of various household chores easier anyway, with or without COVID?

I have pest control service come out 3 x a year. No ants, no spider crickets (scary jumping things) and much less silver fish (for some reason we can't quite get totally rid of silver fish).

My pest control also comes 3X a year. My worst infestation is earwigs. Here in MT once Winter sets in most bugs go to ground (or where ever they go) and aren't seen again until temps come well back up above 0°.

I went to the pharmacy to get my flu shot.  I was the only person in line.  I gave them all the info and the person still didn't get my doctor info right.  So, I had to cross all the info out and correct it.  It took me forty-five minutes to get the flu shot, and that is with me being the only one there.  Three people behind the pharmacy counter and they were all poky-ass slow.

When I went to the doctor the other day, he had the shingle shots on back order, and he said to me that he may not get them in for over a year to a year and a half.  My name was added to a long waiting list.  So even when he gets them in, who knows if there will be enough to go around.

Especially since the pandemic, I only go places for shots where you can register online and have an appointment for the shot. Here that was the CVS in Target.

@Browncoat, sympathies on the shingles! I hope you can get treatment quickly.

@icemiser69, I actually bought the kit from Herrschners—by now they split my paycheck with Amazon-- and checked their floss supply. However, the cost for shipping one skein of floss is about 5x the cost of the skein.

@theredhead77. Oh, I know I was at the right place but the search apparently searches all their brands regardless of what part of the site you’re on. At the time it was also too late to call the phone number. It's just frustrating not to be able to solve the problem immediately. Joann Fabric is really close by but in addition to worrying about COVID, I'm also having mobility issues. One of the benefits of working from home and being able to get everything delivered is that I've been able to postpone hip surgery for a bit since I'm not walking anywhere but to the mailbox.

What happened, I’m guessing, is that the floss calculation was based on all stitches using 2 strands when 4 colors use 4 strands. Which means there might not be enough of the other 3 colors, either.

Shaking my fist at the sky.

Interestingly, none of the doctors nor the hospital in our area were giving the shingles vax.  They all referred us to our local pharmacy, which is where my mom, husband, and I all received ours.  Try the pharmacies in your area, you may have more success.

Update! Because I know you're all as fascinated by this as I am. I called the number on the site and got a message saying the office was closed due to the pandemic, support staff was working from home, and  gave an email address. I had to replay it 3 times to get the full address and it still wasn't clear whether the address was cssindustry.com or cssindustries.com. Slow down and enunciate, people! I sent the email to both addresses and said I expected 1 skein of each of the colors that will run out.

I have all of the peeves today, starting with freaking shingles on my FACE.  It's just a small patch right now, but it hurts!  And it's annoying!  And of course it's in a spot not covered by my mask!

My mom had shingles (she was diabetic so her immune system was weakened) and no doubt, it sucks.  The best thing I can recommend is using either hydrogen peroxide (the increased oxygen level kills viruses) or a silver infused gel.  Neither require prescriptions and do the job well.  If you go the peroxide route, use a 3% solution that does NOT have stabilizers.  Check the label and see if, "stabilized" is on it.  If yes, put it back.  True hydrogen peroxide should only be purified water and an extra atom of oxygen.  I use this brand, but there are others.  You can dab the peroxide on the affected area with a swab or cotton ball.  If you use silver gel, just gently smear it on the affected area and if possible, cover with a bandage;  if you can't cover it, you can leave it open as long as it's not likely to get wiped or washed off during the day's activities.  You can buy them at a medical supply store but a doctor recommended this brand.

I laughed at this. Y'all read my endless posts about my pot-smoking neighbor at my old apartment. I'm sure that was a real page turner.

This did remind me of when I was a kid and cross-stitched. I thought, "That'd be fun to take up again," but then I thought that it would take away from my heavy TV watching and napping schedule. It's a whole thing.

I am much less peeved today!  I went to my eye doctor who took a good, long look in my eyes, and declared my eye to be shingles-free!  She also believes that I started taking the meds early enough that it won't spread to my eye.  I hope she's right!
