Small Talk: The Prayer Closet

Message added by Scarlett45

This is a reminder that the Politics Policy is still in effect.

I understand with recent current events there may be a desire to discuss political social media posts of those in the Duggar realm- this is not the place for those discussions. If you believe someone has violated forum rules, report them, do not respond or engage.

Political discussion is not allowed in this forum- this includes Small Talk topics. Please stay in the spirit of the policy- I have noticed a tendency for some to follow the letter but not the spirit.

Message added by CM-CrispMtAir,

While we understand the frustration (change is never easy), please keep in mind that not everyone feels the same way and that for those members who don't, the ongoing conversation about other forums and chat options can equally be a cause of frustration.

Out of respect for your fellow posters, we kindly ask that you continue any discussion about alternatives via PM or the Technically Speaking: Bugs, Questions, & Suggestions area.

Wow. I can’t imagine not having a microwave. I use it all day every day for all kinds of things.

The appliance we use the most is our toaster oven (toasts/bakes/broils/convection, etc.) With just the two of us at home, we do a LOT of our cooking in it.

I have the same type of toaster oven. I like the convenience of my microwave, but it's not a necessity. I could happily lose  my microwave & stove and be just as productive with a 2 burner cooktop, the toaster oven, and my instant pot/slow cooker cooker.

Has anyone heard from Rootbeer lately?  Looks like she hasn't logged in since mid-May.  When I tried to tag her in this post the system didn't find her, so I'm wondering if she was put in timeout.

Just curious, I miss her informative posts.

Is there anyone on this forum who is Mexican and lives in Mexico, or any expats?  We just got back from a lovely trip with Older son and family and now think it might be a good place to live.  Sweet Son and his husband did research Merida, but, then, sickness, etc.

I think one was QuinnInND.  She had recently been contacted by her long-lost sister, or maybe mother?  I think she was an exotic dancer or escort at some point in the the past.  Was also maybe a teacher?  And she had twins whose ages changes.

People started questioning her many stories and she vanished.

Does any of this sound familiar, or am I confusing multiple stories, maybe even over multiple forums?  🤪

Oh yes! That’s who I was referring to. I know it included a western state in the name. I think they were also being contacted by long lost family members, and moving across the country.  hello, if you are still here!

I haven't posted much lately. I just don't have much of interest to say some days. Today I'm going to meet with some gal pals at a friend's house (outdoors). Some are unable to make it due to Covid, which is still rearing its ugly head. We've been having gorgeous summer weather. This coming week my husband and I are taking my older sis out for her 70th birthday! My sister is a treasure and the unofficial leader of our large family. Our Mom is doing okay. She's not terribly happy, but she is healthy and unlike Jill Rodrigues, we're not doing a GoFundMe (aka "go to me") for any reason!

My book club most recently read the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, which was very good. Since then I read The Lake on Fire, which takes place during the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. I randomly picked it up at a library book sale and enjoyed it. I think I'll donate it to one of those Little Libraries I pass on my walks. Now I'm reading Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood. It's compelling, but I'm finding it hard to read apocalyptic tales since the world is such a mess right now! I can't watch the Handmaid's Tale (though I've read the book) as it's too close for comfort to the times in which we are living!

There are a lot of older people living in my neighborhood, though it is not specifically a 55 & older one. It's sad because we've lost some neighbors lately. I just learned that one of my favorites passed on Thursday. She was typically out walking in every weather (with a caretaker/friend) and I hadn't seen her for a few days. She looked exactly like that cartoon Maxine and was a fun and engaging person. Two other faves were suddenly put in homes, one from a fall and one has Lewy Body Dementia. That one was besties with my elderly next door neighbor. It is heart breaking because her daughter cleared out her home and gave away her cats and put the house on the market in short order. Worst of all, she won't tell my neighbor where she is! I feel so sad for my neighbor. 😔

Sorry if I'm being a downer. I just really feel sad for all the losses, but I'm grateful for my own health and that I have a healthy husband! I also had a lovely overnight visit with my youngest daughter last weekend. Life is good, but some days you have to make yourself look for the good!

My good news for Sunday.. I invited all my (Illinois) family to just hang out at my house and play games, and every single one of the 14 came..even my kid's spouses!

We actually all played games together (that is SO rare. )

We had a blast.. especially playing family feud (which I got for only $2 at goodwill 😁

I've been feeling pretty down the last few months (no reason) and this really cheered me up.. big time.😊

@BetyBee and @ChiCricket, I think we are all just doing the best we can. The world and our country seem overwhelming with problems and conflict. We each are trying to find comfort and solace where we can. Your day with family playing games sounds so lovely and simple, Chicricket.

I agree! Time with family helps immensely! Doing for others helps too and that can get lost in the busy-ness of life. I've been thinking up ways to cheer up my next door neighbor (the one whose bestie disappeared to an unknown nursing home). Like bringing her Dairy Queen once in a while. Mostly she just likes visits & chats. I also want to knit my baby sister an afghan for her September birthday. I better get cracking on that!

Hi Small Talkers. I took a break from online discussions for awhile but I finally had to check in to see how you're all doing these days.

I have a colonoscopy this morning, rescheduled from last week. I've now finished drinking all the prep drink, thank goodness. Urgh. I didn't get sick, but it was much more disgusting than I remember from my only other colonoscopy which was about 12 years ago. I'm consoling myself with a bowl of yellow Jello and some black coffee, before getting showered and dressed. Glad I won't be driving this morning; I'm tired. I was going to say "pooped," which come to think of it isn't at all incorrect. 🤣

Carry on.

I hope I haven't contributed to your concerns about the prep, @awaken. It's really important to have the procedure because colon cancer is so sneaky. I've had 3 colonoscopies and the peace of mind afterwards is so reassuring. Like Jeeves, I did better with the prep the first two times, so I think age was a factor with the difficulties I had this most recent time. Even so, I came through it well. There is a pill option you can ask about. I suspect doctors don't push it because they are concerned patients won't get enough fluid down with it. I've had a different gastro doc with each one and they've never encouraged the pill option, so I'm just guessing at the reason they prefer patients do the liquid prep. Anyway, you can totally get through it and you'll be glad you did!

I hope you are feeling much better today, @Jeeves!

Son in law, mr lookeyloo and I saw Mean Girls at the Fox last night. The young woman who played the lead role reminded me so much Of Jana. She had the same hairdo, same sort of build, and from where I was sitting, similar enough face. It was a great show and I thought through it - Jana would never be able to get some of those words out of her mouth!!

My doctor won't even talk about that pill!  I have had 3 colonoscopies and the last prep was horrid.  Took 6 hours to kick in and before I even got to the morning part of the prep, I couldn't keep it down.  Think Exorcist.  I can't even SMELL citrus 3 years later.  I have to go again in 2 years.  It freaks me out because I KNOW I won't be able to do the liquid prep.

Maybe find another Dr.? I need another colonoscopy and will be looking for a Dr who is more open about that. I did not have such a severe reaction as you but I see no reason to force that nasty drink down if there is another choice.

I have a tech question someone might be able to help me with- my HP printer is NOT reading the color ink cartridge (I have taken out the new cartridge and put it back in, unplugged etc about 5x) and it won't print at all (even though the black is brand new and is being read).

Is it that the ink cartridge is just old (I likely bought it before the pandemic so yeah its old) and I should buy a new colored ink cartridge, or is my printer on the fritz or what? I have never had this issue before.

Thank you!

Thanks!  I may have to.  The other thing I don't get is they make you drink the same amount whether you weigh 120 or 200.  I was in tears because I didn't want the prep I had done go to waste but my body literally wouldn't accept more.  Mixing it with something or following it up with apple juice, using a straw.  None of it works.  It isn't just the taste, it is the weight of it in your stomach.  Barium is like a yummy cocktail compared to this stuff.  HA!

I weigh 83 lbs and that prep was literally too much for me to handle. I’d even be willing to do a liquid diet for 5 days prior than have to drink all that Gatorade. I hate the saltiness of it. Yuck.

I was hospitalized when they did mine, and they gave me water, sprite, all kinds of other liquids along with the prep to make it easier to get down, but they didn’t help! I whined like a child about how awful it was lol. The actual procedure was painless  - they came in to get me so early in the morning, I was still mostly asleep, put me under, and I woke up fine with no memory of it.

Do they enjoy making us go through this??? I actually enjoy watching the procedure.  I have never lost my memory from it.  Now a sigmoidoscopy was painful!  No meds and a nurse  holding your legs from kicking.  Good times.  HA!

Mr lookeyloo had a prep that was 8 oz of a solution followed by a lot of water over time, then later another 8 oz of solution and a lot more water over time.  It was his easiest most tolerable prep.  We are in a big city with a lot of doctors, so this must be a viable option.  From what I know, there are a lot of options for preps.

That sounds better than a gallon!  The prep I had for the 1st one worked pretty instantly, I only did it that night and my only complaint was there was no tp soft enough.😁

I did a 3 day liquid diet three days before I was supposed to start the prep. I drink what I could of the prep and kept to clear liquids. I might have gotten a half a gallon of the prep down in 24 hours, but with just the liquid diet I was pretty much all cleaned out. The doctor said I had one of the cleanest colons she had seen in a while, plus no sign of polyps so I don't have to go back for 10 years. I did the same thing when I had my hysterectomy 10 years ago and had to drink the prep before surgery.

I hope everyone who is having procedures gets through them unscarred and untraumatized. 🤗

Mr Kbo and I have both done the pill prep for colonoscopy and it worked fine, wonder why your Dr has an issue with it?  The pills are large, and you have to take a bunch of them within 15 minutes or so. You also have to drink water, but it’s spaced out and never felt overwhelming. I go to a clinic where they do these procedures all day every day. The downside is they were $60 and the liquid prep would have been free, but I will pay it every time to avoid the nasty prep solution.

Same happened to me with my first colonoscopy prep.  I had one more dose left (after having to lay down nauseated after every 15 minute drink).  Thank God I was at the sink drinking it.  Projectile vomiting with blood clots.  I went to the hospital the next morning and had to have an endoscopy first - bleeding inside my stomach.  No colonoscopy that day.

I would pay the $60 too, but I wonder why it costs more? It's almost like punishment for not drinking the liquid prep! When I had my most recent one, the nurse said her husband had just had his at the same facility and did the pills. I have this nagging thought that they are more likely to offer the pill version to men. I don't know if that's true, but medical stuff often favors males! Like how Viagra is covered more often than birth control.

I had both an endoscopy and a colonoscopy at once. They were trying to find the source of bleeding that resulted in my severe anemia that required blood transfusions. Even after all of that, the only stressful and uncomfortable part was the damn prep. Glad you made it through.

My college is having kind of the same issue. It's made even worse by the college president we've had for the last 4 years. She's a major control freak and pits departments against each other to make them beg for funds. Not only did a lot of people retire or get a different position when the pandemic closed campus, but people are retiring in droves to get away from the toxic culture.

Of course they offer the tablets to men while making women ask.  Men complain louder and more often and they resist getting the procedure done, so doctors offer them the easiest option.  Please note my tone of sarcasm here.

The tablets are going to be expensive for a multitude of reasons with corporate greed sitting on top.  The drug manufacturer spent years developing and testing it, so they need to recoup the money from that.  There's also the need to beef up the account used to grease palms in DC.  Drug companies also know patents expire, so they jack up the price for the few years that the brand-name is the only one available.  They know profits on this particular drug will fall after a certain date.  If memory serves, the patent on a medication is 17 years but that will include some years when clinical trials are still ongoing and the drug is not able to make any money yet.

I would try a new color cartridge.  They get old and dried out without regular use.  It's cheaper than a new printer.  Have you tried shaking it or last resort cleaning with an alcohol swab?  I found the cleaning instructions online although the book with the printer said don't do it, it worked.

I have had a different prep every time.  Be emphatic.  As someone said all you have to do is reach clear.  It will be yellow, but no bits in it.  My last time, I knew how easily I tip into diarrhea so I even ate the morning of the prep.  I was fine.  I refused the gallon of plastic gunk after not finishing it the first time.  The second time, the doctor said only mix half and stop as soon as you get to clear.  Again less than half was too much.  The third time I used mag citrate which cost $.99 and I used maybe half a bottle.  I could have used less.

I will shake and clean with an alcohol swab. If it doesn't work I will just buy a new color cartridge. Thank you so much!

Edited to add, I just took the color cartridge out to shake it, and it printed! Happy Cracking Up GIF by Regal

No worries :-)  I'm not too worried about drinking the stuff (although I haven't tasted it yet so the jury is out on that one!). It's not eating and being hungry for that long.  I get really hangry and easily triggered.  Even fasting for bloodwork for an am dr appointment is dreadful.
