I don't find CB's Gabi capable of kindness or compassion maybe when Gabi wasn't a villain but these days they have her as this one note villain who is always more piss and vinegar than anything else.  I say this as someone who isn't  that outraged over Gabi doing terrible things but I don't really find her sympathetic either at this point. I do agree about AZ and ORK though there was some level of humanity with them despite the bad things  Nicole and Claire have done.

Wasn't that started a long time ago by GH with the rape of Laura by Luke turning into the most romantic and grandiose love story ever?

Belle's legal brains went on a quick holiday when she agreed to that scheme. Perhaps she should stick around in Salem and join Justin to found a new firm  with the slogan "We provide the worst legal advice possible so you can be guaranteed to lose your case".

As for the adoption plotline, I could have included two more twists to my list of ideas that writers could pursue: first, and most obviously, the father will resurface and assert his legal rights, or some other relative could challenge Allie's decision in court, for example Lucas acting on Bonnie's bad advice.

Well that's the most well known example but rape turned to romance happened before them on soaps but back then it was acknowledged as rape and not glossed over. Also back then it helped that L&L left the show shortly after and GH had other couples and stories to fall back on Frisco/Felicia, Robert/Holly, Duke/Anna etc. so by the time they came back it evolved into something else until Liz got raped and Lucky found out about his parents.

I do agree that should've never happened but soaps still had good guys like Roman, Shane etc who were interesting and leading men. They wouldn't get that type of recognition now. They would be considered "boring"

Gabi's always had a fiery personality but I see a warmth in her when she has scenes with her family (Ari, Will, Sonny, Rafe) and she's had moments of softness with Jake.  Even when Ciara is supposed to be loving ( in her scenes with Hope or Ben), she comes off very shrill and just off putting.  At least to me.

And Sami's whole "Don't tell Allie I spoke to Rafe" feels really contrived and I'm at a loss as to why Nicole thinks Allie needs to know this.  Rafe is a single man who doesn't want to raise a baby and he's fully capable of making his own mind up about--does Nicole really think Sami has that much influence over him that she can make him change his mind?

Since the reveal of Jake's family history, I feel like Gabi has toned down a lot and seemed much more human. It even felt like she was embarrassed to have stalked Jake to the degree she did, even if it went unsaid. There's only so far the actress can go, though, when the show perpetually writes her as the antagonist in Abigail and Chad's story or in Eli and Lani's story. I firmly believe Gabi loves her daughter Arianna and spends a lot of time with her, but that's based more on who Gabi was before they decided to limit her than what's on the screen right now. Similarly, I believe Marlena and Sami both adore Will much more than we've seen on screen. I don't believe for a second that Sami would get Will's murderer to re-strangle him just so he would regain his memories. That's insane and I chalk it up entirely to a lousy head writer. I also don't feel like Marlena would be buddy buddy with a mentally ill patient, let alone the one who murdered several people in town and caused everyone so much grief. I didn't buy her propping Abigail, and I certainly don't buy her propping Ben. Both of them knocked her out, and I think for Marlena her physical safety matters more than seeming like a charitable sweet as sugar therapist.

So yeah...when good characters are limited by the writing, I just try to enjoy what the performers are able to do within the parameters they're given. Camilla manages to be funny, somewhat sympathetic, energetic, sexy and kind of delicious. And I'm supposed to root for Lani? Ha!

Today's episode made me kind of sad for reasons I can't describe in this thread....

I was surprised to see Nicole push Rafe to confirm Sami talked him out of it. Does she really care all that much about Rafe getting to adopt this baby? It didn't seem like that. It seemed more like the writing was trying to show that Nicole is looking for ammunition against Sami. Sigh. I was so hoping that Ron would let any drama organically spin out of misunderstandings, rather than Nicole deliberately making Sami look bad. It is pretty flimsy to suggest that just because Nicole and Rafe once bonded over not being able to have kids - which doesn't make sense if it even happened because Rafe isn't infertile right? - that that's enough for her to automatically feel that Sami deserves to be called out. You just got attacked at your wedding Nicole. Maybe it's best to avoid all things Sami-related for the time being?

It would have been nice to get some scenes of Justin talking over the adoption papers with the boys. That seems like a better use of his time than sadly walking through the square and chatting with Bonnie....

So, Eric and Nicole went to Africa on their honeymoon? I heard a reference to Kilimanjaro but that was it. Hasn't only one Salem day passed since their wedding? Did they just fly there and immediately come back?

I missed the very beginning of the show so I didn't see if Ciara had a reaction to there being proof that Claire didn't set the bomb--I look forward to both her and Ben having to admit they were wrong--I did however get to see the frankly ridiculous scene of Ciara insisting she knows how to interrogate people because both of her parents were cops--WTF?!  And if how she talked to Clyde was any evidence of her "skills" then Mrs. Weston needs to sit her ass down and let the actual professionals do their thing.

Who didn't enjoy seeing Ben tied to a chair and freaking out?  Sucks to be a supposedly reformed serial killer doesn't it? 🙂

She didn't pause for a SECOND.  After being heinously cruel to Claire her reaction to finding out Claire was innocent was basically "meh."  And I loved how she asked Clyde if Ben could have any enemies from Poplar Bluff or Statesville.  Like the possibility that a relative of someone he, I don't know, MURDERED would actually be an enemy of Ben was simply too far-fetched to even consider.

Yes.  Ben:  "Whoever did this, let me go, please."  Did he really expect unknown kidnapper to have gone through all the bother to blow up the church and kidnap him to simply walk in the room and say "Well, since you asked so nicely, of course I'll let you go.  I really just wanted to hear you say please?"

You stated the Nicole thing far better than I could.  Especially, since Rafe was clearly distracted - it's possible he would have said that Sami talking to him actually made him think of the situation in a new light, and he realized she was right.  It would have been a HUGE mistake for him to adopt that baby.  It really seems like Nicole is looking to unseat Julie as the town Busybody.

And Justin REALLY is a crappy lawyer isn't he?  I get that some people might want to ignore the rights of the father, but a lawyer should have known better and brought it up.

That was the stupidest bit of writing possible for such a situation. Also, the director may have been a foot fetishist because we got two close-ups of Ben's shoeless foot and torn-up sock; it's not like we needed that to recognize him.

The place where he is being held captive is like a collection of clichés for scenes of that type: the big pieces of canvas draped over various wire fencing in a deserted warehouse, the perfectly circular spot of light on the captive, the smoke/dust floating around, the door opening by itself (much the ones in church did to let the bride and groom enter and leave, as if they have been built by Star Trek engineers).

So the writers have decided that as soon as Nicole comes back from her honeymoon, she should get back into Salem's national pastime everyone indulges in: meddling into other people's business. That is sure to go over well.

How long has it been since Nicole and Eric's wedding?  They were able to go to Africa, honeymoon, and come back?  Also, where are they getting the money for an Africa honeymoon?

Throwback to the elephant statue.  Love it.

Does one learn about interrogation through their genes?

Ciara has had a chance to take off her wedding gown and take a nap, but Hope hasn't had time to take off the dress she wore to the wedding.

If Ciara wants to know if Ben made any enemies, in prison, she could have asked Will.

I'm glad that the friendship between Rafe and Nicole is still there, even though they don't interact that much any more.  Remember when she was pregnant with EJ's baby (that she miscarried), and she and Rafe were pretending that he was the father?

Yeah, and those zap straps around his wrists look like anyone with a modicum of strength could snap them in half with a little effort. And that's a very comfortable chair they've got him in.

The more they show flashbacks to that wedding, the more I have to wonder why tiny chunks of the ceiling are seen falling down on Ben. The bomb was planted on the floor behind a statue behind him. Shouldn't the wall behind him have blown up and shot towards his back and the door into the chapel..?

They have always done stories like this, it's just that they used to actually put some effort into redeeming people. They put virtually no effort into redeeming Ben. Saying he had a 'mental illness' and then just expecting everyone to treat him as a hero ain't it! They didn't put any effort into Kristen's 'redemption either. They marginally tried with Xander, I guess. Also, characters still got to hate Luke, they still got to hate Todd, they still got to hate Jack. That really helps. And, as @CanaryFan98 said, it also helps when there are truly good characters around to balance things out, but soaps don't care to showcase heroes like that anymore.

Ciara looked so beautiful today. I loved her hair and makeup. Too bad she's heinous lol.

Lucas makes every scene he's in better than it has any right to be!

Nicole has a history of marry men for their money and leaving the marriage with some money. She is also currently running Basic Black so she should have a salary that enables her to splurge on an African safari honeymoon.

I don't find many of the younger females all that likeable. Claire is the only one that I don't dislike at this point.

Even though I don't care for Gabi at least she has a pulse that does help in a show that's lacking any real energy unfortunately that only goes so far.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get the big deal about Sami talking to Rafe about not adopting Alli's baby. And why the hell is it something to even flashback to, like it's some shady secret? She didn't threaten him. She didn't blackmail him into doing it. She just said that if she ever meant anything to him, he won't adopt Alli's baby. Ultimately it was Rafe's decision to say no. I started watching this show when teenage Sami was changing paternity test results...the first time, so I don't know, this doesn't seem that bad. I wouldn't even say it's bad at all.

Yes, completely agree. It is somewhat hilarious how they all ridicule Sami, but she is not wrong on this point. This was a very bad idea and Rafe should have shut it down immediately. Now I guess Nicole is going to make it into a something to further compromse Sami and Alllie's relationship. Cause that is what a nice Auntie does.  Eric is such a dweeb.

I am not sure if I was ever a Nicole fan, but I didn't hate her as much as I do right now.

Who knew that Nicole and Eric went on a safari! I wanted a closer look at the Tanzanite earrings. I like Tanzanite.

No Sami, you didn't need to talk to Rafe and get him to not be interested in adopting Allie's baby. That is his decision to make - on his own. You would prefer Allie's brother being a parent? Seriously? It's not Nicole's business to meddle, but Allie does need to hear the truth that people are making decisions for her and not letting her be an adult and make her own choice. I don't hate Nicole - she may be wanting to do the right thing and support Allie no matter what she chooses. Will and Sonny were sure moving fast with those papers.

Surely Hope must be uncomfortable in that gown. She could have gone out home and changed or asked someone to bring her jeans and a t-shirt or something. Claire should not be exonerated as she could have hired someone to put the bomb in the church - but that would mean looking at her financial records or any cash she may have.

Clyde may be many things, but he seemed to be in possession of the Salem Brain today. His wedding gift was some money for his son and his new wife - sounds like a Southern thing to do. He also did mention Evan/Christian and Orpheus - all of which would have a reason to go after Ben, Marlena, Rafe, et al. And that Orpheus knew about bombs - moreso than Claire. And also looked at Ciara as though *she* could have been the target. He's done a better job than the Salem PD!

After all the trouble of bombing the church, removing you from the rubble, and tying you up in a nice, comfy chair, do you seriously think that if you say please, that they will let you go?

You've all covered the points of today's show , there's not much for me to add except to agree with pretty much everything.

Nicole is being a pain in the ass about Sami and that's a ridiculous thing for her to do, considering her history.  Allie gets worse by the day and as far as I can see, Nicole is pretty much just using her as a tool against Sami.  And I generally LIKE Nicole, as horrible as she has been.  Now she's just another Gladys Kravitz, a junior Julie.

I'm hoping that, whenever Ally gives birth, they wheel her from the delivery room straight to the airport.  See ya, Ally.  How can we miss you if you won't go away.

I'm wracking my brain to figure out WHO could hate Ben so much.  Hmmmmm........how about everyone other than Ciara, who uses her brain as a clutch purse and his dear old child rapist dad, Clyde?  What a sooper romantic guy Ben is!

One thing I hate about Show is how stupid they make people.  Why hasn't anyone mentioned the obvious dangers of setting up an adoption without the bio dad's consent WHEN WE JUST SAT THROUGH A STORYLINE ABOUT THE EXACT SAME THING?

And why did Show make Will look like he'd been chowing down on JJ's brownie recipe but just now remembering that Clyde called Ben from the jail and said he was sending him a wedding present?????  Clyde tried to kill Will in prison, among his his many other crimes and Will didn't connect the explosion and Clyde?  Come ON, Show.

I have a bone to pick with the kidnappers.  Why on earth didn' they gag him, too?  Does RSW get an extra nickel in his pay every time he screams "CIARRRRRRRA"?

Hope actually spent the night sitting in a chair outside Ciara's room.  The brat knew that she was going to do that and wouldn't even let her in.

There were only a few hours between when Claire was "fired" as maid of honor and the wedding (she showed up the morning of the wedding.)  The thought that in that time she somehow found someone who could make a bomb (the classifieds? NextDoor?) and this person actually had time to get all the supplies and make a bomb with a timer (unless they went on an outing to "Bombs R Us"), planted it, and somehow also come up with a plan to kidnap Ben is pretty ludicrous, even using the magic Salem teleporter.

I can’t believe Sami talking to Rafe and asking him not to adopt the baby is going to be such a big deal. Everyone who has ever met Sami knew she would go talk to Rafe. Was she pushy? Sure, but Rafe could have been a big boy and said he wanted Allie’s baby despite Sami and her “talk.”  We’ve seen Sami do worse when it comes to persuading people as in actual blackmail but this is what causes such an uproar for everyone? Really?!  It is just a tool for Nicole to use and drive an even bigger wedge between Allie and Sami.

This “controversy“ is just disappointing. I have wanted Allie in Salem since they SORASED that age group but I cannot understand this young woman is supposed to be college aged acting like she’s 15. Oh well I’m looking forward to see if Will and Sonny actually get this baby.

I agree entirely. The only thing more ridiculous than Will being friends with his murderer (not "would-be murderer," show, but actual killer) is Marlena's apparent cherishing of her beloved grandson's killer. Don't even get me started on Sami's therapeutic re-strangling idea.

I think them trying to sell Ben and Clyde as some rootable, loving father/son duo is probably the biggest wtf of this 'everyone must love Ben' situation.

YES!  She has an opinion.  She expressed it several times to Allie so the fact that she also expressed her opinion to Rafe should NOT be considered going behind Allie's back.  Rafe did not have to listen to her opinion.  The fact that Allie WANTED Rafe to take her baby does not obligate him to actually take it.  Nicole could have waited a beat and considered if Rafe would have made the same decision no matter what, but instead she talked to Rafe while he was clearly distracted.  Rather than actually asking him about his decision, (i.e. was he really OK with it, etc.) she then immediately jumped in to trashing Sami.  And the fact that she couldn't WAIT to come back to the apartment and immediately tell Allie (giving HER take on the situation) shows that she isn't really thinking about Allie (or Will and Sonny) but trying to use Sami's child against her.

And Allie runs away from her mother like a toddler.  Welp, if they wanted to convince us Allie isn’t ready to be a parent, I’ll sign that affidavit.  But like all Toddlers, she’s going to WANT that ‘toy’ she gave away.

Bleech.

Fun bit: Elephant souvenir shout-out!!  Poor Serena, rolling in her grave a lot these days.  Still, it made me chuckle.

Ciara: you’re young.  Why did you even go to sleep.  The love of your life is missing.  Shower, put in action clothes, and get back out there.  Take a page from your emasculates Mom, she stayed up all night.

Glad they At least stated WHY Claire was cleared.

I NEED an apology from her to Ciara.  Heartfelt.

I can’t believe Sami talking to Rafe and asking him not to adopt the baby is going to be such a big deal.

Right.  I think it's fine if Allie gets mad at Sami for doing this because Sami is interfering when Allie has made it clear she doesn't want her opinion.  But everyone acting like this is some kind of huge secret that they they've been implicated in is over the top.

If Rafe was convinced not to adopt the baby after a short conversation with Sami, he shouldn't adopt the baby because that's not someone who is convinced this is the right move.  WIll and Sonny, on the other hand, have been great.  They've given her space but they made their desire crystal clear and the minute she selected them, they went full force into pushing the adoption forward.  There might be some trickiness involved with someone so close adopting her baby but they're convinced at least.

They marginally tried with Xander, I guess.

It's probably because they want to be able to go either way with Xander but it's true that there seems to be some awareness that this is a process.

Question - and I don't mean this to be snarky or anything, but what would Claire be apologizing for?  If it's for all the horrendous stuff she did before she went to the facility, okay, but didn't she already do that?  If it's for things that have occurred since she got out, what did she do?

Ah, the good ol' days of General Hospital. Duke/Anna were my favorite GH couple until Brenda/Jax came along...

I'm glad that the friendship between Rafe and Nicole is still there, even though they don't interact that much any more.  Remember when she was pregnant with EJ's baby (that she miscarried), and she and Rafe were pretending that he was the father?

The most heartbroken I ever felt for Nicole was when she miscarried that baby, then had to put away (donate?) the baby clothes walking talking about her "little dude". So sad...

I think both Lucas and Sami have vastly improved the show since they returned. It just feels like Days when they're there.

Has the show actually improved, or do we just feel this way based on nostalgia - (meaning: the time period when Lucas and Sami were key characters, not sidelined or just inserted into the story from time to time) - with Sami & Lucas being on our screen lately?

Ah yes, the famous donuts!  Julie was never more enjoyable.

Serious Q:  who in Salem has Alice's donut recipe?  I think Hope, but anyone else...?

I'm not prone to nostalgia, but I'm finding the Sami and Lucas dialogues/interchanges to be a real pleasure, especially on BD's part. He handles humour and irony really well, and those scenes feel fresh. Surprises me, because Sami can bring me out in hives.

As compared to the tedium of St Ben tied to a chair on the world's cheapest set. Oh, the spirituality of it all... And/or our plucky little duck Ciara, being sold as the daughter Bo would be soooo proud of? Only if he had a weak spot for self-centred stupidity, I guess.

Hmmm, I think that Allie has the right to know that her mother attempted to influence Rafe into not agreeing to adopt the baby. She then could have asked Rafe if his decision was based on Sami's interference and then asked him for his true decision. She was entitled to know that since she wants Rafe to be the father. Rafe then could have said that he didn't want to cause problems for the family and maybe that he didn't want anything to do with being connected in any way to Sami. Once that was out in the open, he could either change his mind and try to adopt the baby (I say "try"because at some point the baby's father has to be revealed), and then leave town with the baby to start a new life. Maybe there would be an agreement that Sami and co. not know where they live, like a true adoption.

Greatest moment of today's episode?  Eve walking out of the shadows and revealing that she's behind Ben's kidnapping!  WOO HOO, Go Eve!!  I can't believe it hasn't occurred to anyone--Ciara, Hope, anyone else in law enforcement--that a family member of the one of the three people Ben killed might not be too happy that he gets to have his dream wedding while their loved one lies in a cold grave.  Seeing as how this show loves flashbacks, I wonder if we'll get one of Ben's killing Paige--I bet we won't because we're supposed to sympathizing with Ben.  No chance in hell my friends.

I liked Ari's asking if they were getting a puppy and Will and Sonny's reactions were comic gold.

Of course not.  Nobody remembers that Paige existed.  Or that Ben killing people wasn't a good thing, since Rolf brought back the one victim that anybody actually cared about.  You know what would have been better than Eve.  If Will was behind the whole thing and he'd only been pretending to be Ben's bestie.  Or, the two of them working together.

Exactly what I was thinking. I know THAT Ben is a far cry from the heroic good guy who has been changed by love we are seeing, but I wouldnt mind a reminder of how god awful he was and why Eve is doing this. Tbh I didn't think Eve was a great mother but still. Paige's murder was brutal. I would easily torture anyone who did that to my child.

Man, but I would watch the hell out of that :)  I'm good with the Eve reveal but the idea of Will's teaming up with her to get even with Ben sounds rather awesome.
