Soap viewers learn quickly that any happiness is transitory for the characters. The main constant one can expect on such shows is the impermanence of things.

I agree about Lani and Eli being the boringest bores who ever bored.

The CIN fan base talk is becoming off topic so please move on.

Also, if you want to expand on something behind spoiler tags, either put that response behind tags as well or move to the spoiler thread to discuss it further.

Even if you think you're vague, sometimes the details you do include give things away.

Kate has absolutely no loyalty.  She routinely trashes Sami and Gabi both (after teaming up with both of them), and was actively involved in the whole Gina and Stevano debacle and yet wants Chad to believe she's trustworthy.

Well, she actually does care about Chad -- I don't think we can say that about the other two. (Or, you know, possibly anyone else ever, including some of her children. Even Will she sometimes ... forgets about?)

Today's episode actually turns out to be satisfactory, what a pleasant change from adolescent angst for the last few weeks. No gratuitous nudity, hoarse screaming, thank god! Ron may not be the best writer of soaps but I will give him credit for not turning it into another episode of Saw today.

P.S. Some wardrobe choices on the show are truly bizarre (what the heck is Gabi wearing today?)

A post-makeover Sandy from Grease-inspired jumpsuit.  I gotta admit, I was here for it.

In fact, I was actually here for the Gwen and Gabi dynamic today as well.  It's a surprise to me since previously, Gwen hadn't been really much of anything except a British accent but they were working for me today.

Xander and Jack were exposition-a-rama and yet I enjoyed it.  They made it work.  I was torn at the end when Jennifer showed.  Half of me was "Missy, wish you would have stayed away longer" and half of me was "squee, Jack and Jenn!"

As much as I love them, Stephen and Mary Beth couldn't save their scenes today.  I know they don't have contracts with high work guarantees so I wish they'd use those guaranteed days for better scenes.

As I suspected, twins.  Twins are fun in soaps and they could be fun in 20 years....if DOOL is still around. But once gain today just re-highlighted why, as much as I appreciate how enthusiastic LA and SS are about their characters and pairing, it's just so painful how little SS brings to the table.  For instance, in their shock after they learned they were having twins, Lani said "where are we going to fit another crib?" and "how will I breast feed two babies?" with all the oomph and character as if she were asking whether or not the hospital had parking nearby.  I get shock can look different on people but couldn't she try to make it an interesting kind of shock?  LA, on the other hand, sounded breathless after each panicked question about the crib and breastfeeding which gave his reactions a humorous quality to them. It led to a mild laugh from me.

Ah, the miracles of double sided tape and probably a good deal of spandex to keep Gabi's outfit in place. The girl has got confidence. Both she and Jake kinda got an eyeful of each other.

What kind of soap do the DiMera's use - hotel sized? I don't really see the need for Gwen unless she and Chad may be a pairing. How is she going to spy on Gabi? None of those fancy rooms at the mansion have a TV or a game system or anything? Even the bedding is basic. No nice comfy duvet or comforter. Just a thin bedspread or coverlet. Nice of Gabi to call Shin and arrange a meeting with Chad, knowing full well he would be heading out of town earlier.

If my family member started yelling through the door that he or she knows I am home, I still wouldn't answer. That was pretty rude of Roman. And Steve give his finely bought cigars to him? Seriously. Move along, brother.

Eli and Lani - snooze. Twins! The more the merrier! Lani seemed so unaffected by it - just that everyone would be happy. Guess she only wanted one. Only thought was an extra crib. Uh, both you and your husband are well-paid police detectives. You can certainly afford more than JJ's studio apartment. Doesn't Eli own that mansion? Both of you can easily rent a 3 or 4 bedroom home. Just blah blah.

The high point of the show was the unlikely friendship between Xander and Jack. They do play off each other well, with Jack in semi horror at all the bad things that happened that seemed to benefit Xander and Sarah's reuniting. At least she showed up.

Welcome back Jennifer.

Lost power for 24 hours.

Power back on for 4 hours.

Then, lost Comcast for 22 hours, because it decided to go out after the damn storm had passed.

My DVR recordings are a mess, and I'm really tired of doing word puzzles to pass the time.

Anyway, the following thoughts are random, since I'm still not caught up.

I now loathe Allie. Your child is a human being, not a toy that you can snatch away when you get your knickers in a twist, you selfish, spoiled brat.

Sonny isn't far behind in the loathing department.

I think Chandler looks horrible.

Seriously, did they just bring back Sami for everyone to crap all over her? Go back to EJ/Europe and be done with Salem and its asshole inhabitants.

Had enough of St. Rafe, too. He's really not that great, Allie.

Enjoyed Steve and Kayla.

Justin and Bonnie? Don't go there, show.

I was really hoping Ben would take one look at Ciara, strangle her, Hope would shoot him dead, then turn the gun on herself from her grief. A girl can dream.

UO, but I think Kassie has sucked in her scenes. Way too over the top for me.

Can't wait to catch up on today's show. <eye roll>

You'll enjoy today's show, especially if you need a good, long nap.

For some reason, Show seems to think we'll be excited that Lani and Eli are having twins.  I'm hoping her good friend Kristen decides to kidnap-I-mean-babysit them.  I wonder if they'll come out wearing muu muu's, talking a mile a minute, with grey hair and dentures.....  "Oh look, we'll call them both Julie!"

Kids are doomed.

Yes, yesterday's show was brought to us by Sominex... Except, except, Zander/Paul Telfer just bringing the adorbs, playing naïve eagerness. Awww. And as noted, the unlikely but working-like-mad friendship with Jack. That alone is kind of a reward for enduring so many tedious storylines.

And what is the boobs leitmotif? What does this signify? Enquiring minds want to know.

My dislike for Allie continues, and her insane justification for not giving the baby to Will and Sonny were astounding--what if Sami talks Will into giving the baby to her?  WTF?!  Allie really thinks her mom is some kind of a mind-controlling psychopath who can turn people into her personal zombies.  Perhaps Dr. Rolf and Vincent need to take lessons from her.

I do love how Jake can't resist Gabi when she asks for his help and watching Gwen lose her mind over it is even more amusing.

I know Sarah/Xander has their fans but I am not one of them.  I don't know why LG chooses to sometime say Sarah lines in this weird baby voice and I also have a difficult time taking Xander seriously when he acts desperate for Sarah's approval, as if she's some sort of moral authority he has to win approval of.

I can't believe they let the show go there today.  Sami actually got to SAY that Allie was treating her baby like "first come, first served at the ice cream parlor."  And stupid Eric, vaguely acknowledged that she was right but didn't stop for a second to think maybe he and Nicole SHOULDN'T have been so quick to indulge her every whim and actually ask her to think about/rationalize her decisions.

The reason I'm liking Xarah is because Sarah knows exactly who Xander is.  She's not expecting everyone to now worship at his feet while she goes around town screaming that "he's changed."  He HAS changed and she's OK with letting people figure it out for themselves...or not.

Allie is so much more tolerable if you tell yourself she’s 14.

I wish Nicole would’ve continued her confessions, “I also let your cousin Shawn be almost convicted for a murder, tried to have your grandmother killed in a prison riot, married your father because your grandmother paid me $5 million dollars, aaaaaaaannnnndddd put flesh eating bacteria in people’s faces... so pobody’s nerfect.”

Today's epi is decent though I am conflicted about Xarah moments. On the one hand, their dinner conservation was nicely done. I like how they were able to sit down, relax, enjoy each other's company and communicate like a normal couple - something sadly missing from Days relationships today. On the other hand, their love scene fell flat in a way. I don't know if it had to do with actors' discomfort (e.g. LG/Sarah was covering her breast when PT/Xander was coming onto her) or supposed to be porn-like. Whatever the reason may be, the love scene didn't translate the love and devotion between the two characters into their actual love-making. Still, it is better than Eric/Nicole's quickies lol.

P.S. the theme song is lovely which reminded me a lot of 80's ballads used on soaps back then.

Gabi and Jake have SO much chemistry. It's a joy to watch them together.

"Get your ass back in my bed.  Now!" Gwen could get a job as a dominatrix.

Don't Xander and Sarah live in the same house?

When is Lucas going to come back and kick Gwen and Jake out of his room?

Well.  That Xarah scene was intense.

Yeah, I was kind of confused by Kate's conversation with Chad as well. Something tells me LK was wisely taking an ambivalent stance to her line readings, because Kate historically has been Team Gabi while at the same time being Team Chad and also Team Chad&Gabi. I can't remember if she and Gabi are on good terms right now or not, and I definitely don't understand why Chad is even talking to Kate given she played such a huge role in his being brainwashed. Wasn't he having a hard enough time talking to her after Theo got shot? Is Chad still brainwashed? I know people have floated that theory but I don't really see enough evidence of it so who knows. But I'm definitely totally lost as to who Kate is aligned with and who still trusts her. I haven't seen any evidence of Kate being against Sami since they teamed up though, since that's been brought up. Thankfully the show hasn't botched that relationship, even though they rarely share screen time now during Allison's visits. So in my head, Kate is still on good terms with both girls and still pulling for Chad, her pseudo son.

I'm glad Xander has a friend to talk to, but I have a hard time with him relating easily to Jack. Maybe it's because we never actually saw them bonding out of town. They were bonding out of town.....right? Or was that just Jack and Vivian? I can't even figure it out anymore, so much happens off-screen. Bottom line, their weird friendship feels forced and while I usually am happy to see the show develop any friendship at all between characters, this one's a little awkward. Jack is too old to be Xander's contemporary or emotional support, and Xander is too savvy to turn to a former amnesiac for emotional advice. But I suppose it's better than forcing Maggie, especially after all that's happened, to root again for Xander to bang her daughter. They needed to move Xander into someone else's orbit friendship-wise, and Jack needed some kind of storyline. If they stopped talking to each other tomorrow it wouldn't surprise me, though.

Feast or famine type of show today.  Where should I start?

If they have to have a love scene on the show, I guess I'm glad it was for Xarah.  But love scenes on soaps in general fall flat for me. I usually find the foreplay and the almosts hotter.  But music and a ten minute(?) montage shows investment.  The writing during their dinner was good, though.  I especially liked how he offered to buy her a new car.

The Jake and Gabi (and Shin) stuff was even more fun.  And honestly, sexier to me than the all out love scene.

But hoo boy, the whole baby story made me raving mad and made me want to smack a bitch--so many bitches.

First, Nicole, so now you think you shouldn't have told Allie what Rafe told you?  Now? You couldn't wait to tell her.  Maybe she should have thought through the consequences.  It's not like she found out Sami bullied Rafe.  Or blackmailed him. Or extorted him.  Sami had a conversation with a grown man who could make his own decision.  Maybe he realized that raising the grandson of his ex-wife and the grand-nephew of his ex-lover could be messy?

And Allie, what Nicole just confessed to hiding is so much worse than what Will did.  And it's not even the tip of the iceberg of her crimes.

And Sonny, you're the worst of them all today.  The WORST!  (Yes, I know he's fictional and can't hear me but third person just doesn't feel as satisfying.)

I have a short term memory so I had basically forgotten Will had been accused of killing Adrienne until Sonny brought it up.  But him bringing it up just made the what the fuckery of his reaction that much more WTF because he actually stood by Will that whole time until Will pushed him away.  Will killing his mother was more forgivable to Sonny than Will not telling him that Sami talked to Rafe.  I mean really.

And then he went back to how disappointed Ari would be and when Will called him on Ari only really wanting a puppy, Sonny pivots to "it's not about a baby or a puppy." Dude, you just brought it up. And then when he stomped out at the end, he was once again throwing Ari's "disappointment" in Will and Sami's face.

Quote

Jack is too old to be Xander's contemporary or emotional support, and Xander is too savvy to turn to a former amnesiac for emotional advice

Xander isn't turning to Jack because he's a contemporary or an amnesiac.  Xander is turning to Jack because of Jack's history as an outsider/screw-up.

Yes Allie, Sonny ran off to Justin to have papers drawn up for the purpose of adopting your child, but it was really all a ploy by the Evil! Will! to eventually hand over the baby to Sami. Because Sami has totally indicated she wants to raise her grandchild. Every time she said "I wish you'd keep your child", it was obviously brainwashing to get you to hand over the child to Will, who hands it over to Sami.

Really, we might as well assume that at least one person in town is brainwashed at any given time. Except ShutUp! Rafe! There isn't a washer available with a small enough capacity, or a placid enough Gentle cycle, to handle that rinky-dink little brain cell of his.

Also, I think Kate's loyalties depend entirely on the demands of the plot; sort of like Darling Julie's principles, or choice of which family member she's kind to this week.

Kate's Marlena's ride-or-die pal (somehow) ... until she isn't. She had enough of Stefano's manipulations to last a lifetime, and protecting her beloved stepson is important to her ... except for that one time. And then that other time. She would never let Will come to any harm, but she doesn't actually remember he's married to Sonny that regularly.

YES!  And somehow, Evil! Will! (LOVE this name) had to convince Sami to start the whole thing by bullying Rafe, because HOW DARE SHE HAVE AN OPINION ABOUT THE FATE OF HER OWN GRANDCHILD  (or did Sami brainwash/bully Evil! Will!?)  Everyone is acting like having a conversation about the future of her grandchild is just beyond the pale.  Apparently, none of the sanctimonious people of Salem would care enough about a relative to, you know, get involved.  Unless, of course, it is to get involved to trash Sami - obviously right up there on the list of Salem pastimes with kidnapping, blackmail and attempted murder.

Sarah and Xander's audition for Showtime After Hours®️ was the funniest thing I've seen all week.  I rewound it and watched it again just so I could giggle some more.  I can move that to the Unpopular Opinion thread if it makes anyone feel better.

Was Allie seeing her baby really intended as the Friday cliffhanger, or are the days messed up because the preemption for tennis didn't happen a few weeks ago?

On paper, Xander/Sarah as a couple is terrible he let her think someone else's baby was hers(I get why he did it but still) plus he's also done some other terrible things to people those she claims to care about (Eric etc). Sarah not making Xander suffer longer doesn't give her much credibility and Xander was much better as a pop up villain than a romantic sap.

However the actors have chemistry and I don't hate watching them on screen together. Given the show rarely has much else to offer in that regard I'm going with it. It does help that Sarah isn't acting like Ciara wondering why people hate Xander etc.

That will probably be the last sex scene this show will have anytime soon because of Covid

It was the first time that Allie showed any type of feeling for her child.  I even wondered if she had gotten raped, to explain her disdain and indifference for her son.. People have floated the idea of EJ having been the father, I was appalled by that suggestion but I would not put it past Ron to write something that gross..

Why is Allie still at the hospital? Complications, need to be monitored? Folks here are sometimes out in a couple of hours after the baby arrives. There is no space at the hospital for people to stay a week, like they used to. Nicole has done a lot of crappy stuff, but at least she has owned it. She didn't push Allie to see her baby.

I didn't like Sami telling Eric how to talk to his wife or anything. Sometimes things may work out better, Sami, if you just got out of your own way. Your overreactions to everything and plowing your way through Salem like an out of control snowplow is getting old. Yes, apologize to your son, apologize to his husband. Ari only cared about a puppy and not a baby, so using her was dumb.

Yes, Mr. Shin, there is a Stefan DiMera lookalike so there is yet another DiMera. Poor Jake having to play dress-up while Gwen wants to shoot some sort of phone porn movie? Crafty of Gabi to get Chad out of the way.

I liked the Xander and Sarah romance scenes. We don't get those very often. Nice of him to offer to buy her a car since hers isn't working. Maggie could also drop a few bucks. Didn't think she could tell him about Lani's twins but it's probably halfway across Salem because of Julie, so what difference would it make. He isn't on Julie's foghorn range.

I generally think Sami is an idiot. But her convo with Rafe was nothing and it certainly was not worth Allie's outrage, nor Nicole's "outrage" and betrayal. And I was with Sami when she confronted Eric about Nicole's bad behaviour in inserting herself into this entire situation.  Eric dutifully told Sami not to call his wife names, but seriously, shouldn't he be somewhat annoyed that Nicole took it upon herself to interfere in HIS family's stuff? A partner would normally talk these things over with their spouse. I would never ever think it was my place to tell some "truth" to a member ofmy  husband's family, without his consent (and probably not then either|).

Sonny deserves to be kicked to the curb for invoking Adrienne, when Will unjustly served prison time for that.  Send Sonny and his stupid sport jacket to prison for a week, please. How did Sonny become the most wimpy and odious character on Days?!

So Xander, who is a criminal, is somehow a misunderstood guy who deserves all the forgiveness in the world while cops Lani and Eli, who didn’t actually do anything wrong other than allegedly killed a “hot” guy (YMMV, mine certainly does) who jumped in front of a violent criminal, seem to be criticized for the crime of merely appearing on screen here.

I don't see anyone claiming Xander is misunderstood.  The opposite.  What he did was wrong.  He admits what he did was wrong.  He has been expressing regret lately for how wrong he was.

And I don't hate Lani because of her killing Stefan.  In fact, I had to think long and hard about who you were referring to.  Nah.  I hate when Lani shows up because she's a cop who facilitated Kristin's escape and acted self righteous when Eli called her out on it--which only lasted a day before he capitulated for her.  No one else knows.

I hate when Lani shows up because, in spite of the fact that Sal S is probably the most beautiful actress on the show (I go between her and Camila), she's a charisma void.  And that drags down Eli, who is played by a charismatic actor, when he spends most of his time with her.  I welcome his presence when he's on screen with just about anybody else.

Right.  Sami was an annoying hellion and I can't say that I loved her much more than I like Allie.  But what I can say is that I think we were supposed to root against her schemes working.  And I could respect that she had a plan even if they were abhorrent.  Allie is hard to like because I'm confused about what she's supposed to be about.  I don't think I'm supposed to root against her, though, and therein lies the disconnect for me.  Sami was actually much worse than Allie but there was a vision there for the character.

IIRC, Sami became a hellion after she witnessed her mom & John having sex. Only problem is that she used her "trauma" as an excuse for bad behavior for the rest of her life. IOW, Sami's never changed...always a buttinski...manipulating/scheming.

Allie's behavior is a direct result of her mom's behavior, which Allie has lived with all her life and totally resents. Allie wants/needs someone to talk to without taking over the conversation and manipulating a desired result. Of course, two wrongs don't make a right, but that's Days for ya.

So who is looking after Zombie EJ now that hurricane Sami has her hands full terrorising the people of salem by just being sami......? See how stupid it was to revive EJ as a zombie ? They could have just gone the easy route and reunited Sami and Lucas.

Plus Sami had to use her wits whenever she was in scheming mode because she didnt really have the resources to carry out her plots  to their fullest capacity which could explain why she was excited and happy to marry a DiMera because now she has the resources to maximise her revenge plots. Remember when she and EJ were in the middle of doing the nasty , she whispered that she wanted Nick Fallon dead and EJ eagerly paid a hitman to kill Nick. Plus Andre even organised for her to be disguised as a man named Stan in order to terrorise her enemies .

OK....... so viewers should uniformly like, dislike, enjoy or not, based on a uniform rule?  I don't know where to even start with this.

Didn't we just go through this same thing with Ollie the serial killer, who some people (me) loathe and other people like?

Lani bores the hell outta me, Xander does not, so I'd rather see him on screen, yes.  I'm fine with that.  And I'm fine with anyone else liking or disliking anyone else, though I'm not fine with people criticizing other people for what they like or dislike.

There's my nickel's worth.

Allow me to also toss in some change....

In any piece of entertainment, whether a movie, TV show or stage play, there's the character as written, which may or may not be interesting or compelling, and then there is the actor's performance which also may or may not be compelling or interesting.

Joseph Mascolo as Stefano had a very long run on the show where his character was interesting and the performance was electrifying and entertaining as all hell. So even though Stefano did terrible things like kill, brainwash people and try to coerce women into bed with him, he was a total delight to watch. I know people who only watched Days of Our Lives because of his performance as Stefano. Doesn't mean the character was a good person.

Conversely, the character of Lani has been on the show for five years now, and I haven't been interested in a single one of her storylines. Technically she's a cop and therefore a good guy, but because of the actress' completely lifeless performance and lazy "oh right, she's still here, we forgot" writing, I wish the character much harm.

Ben is maybe the show's most prominent villain of late, with plenty of screen time and a redemption arc in full swing, but the actor makes the same two faces, can't vary his line readings and has no charisma or energy. I also think the writing is ridiculous at this point. At least before, when he was just a crazy unstable serial killer, I could go along with the story in spite of the bad acting. But now he's being expected to give a wide-ranging performance he just can't deliver on, and the entire narrative of the show has contorted to somehow make him out to be a worthwhile leading man, which as a character, he simply isn't. So I also wish him incredible amounts of harm.

Paul Telfer as Xander has been entertaining from day one. He lights up the screen with his humour and his ability to play sinister and sexy at the same time. There's a confidence in his performance and even though he doesn't have the range entirely to pull off this sympathetic love sick puppy thing, it's nice to see a different side of him and I feel like he earned his promotion to full-time character years ago. The show would have been stupid not to include him in the cast, in spite of the fact that the character has been written into a corner somewhat. He's just done too many terrible things with glee to ever be accepted by the other characters, and yet I hope that gradually over time he's able to make some more friendships and have some more love stories because Paul Telfer is an asset to the show. I still don't like the fact that he's Victor's nephew for some strange reason, or that he has hurt Brady, Marlena, Theresa, Eric and Nicole... It would be ridiculous for any of those characters to trust or like him, which again means they have to be careful about how they use him in the future. The guy has menaced the town openly and should be in prison several times over...but it's been so much fun watching him that I don't object to them finding excuses to keep him involved.

If, all of a sudden, everyone were to start loving him like he's a special pet project they're so super proud of, the way people have turned around completely with Ben, I would be rolling my eyes and annoyed. But so far they've done a decent job of developing him in a new way with Sarah and Victor.

There were actors who came on the show for bit parts, who I think had more potential than some of the long-term leads on this series. It's not about whether you're playing a good guy or bad guy, or even if the dialogue is clever. Sometimes a good entertainer manages to make something out of nothing.

I think Xander is interesting. I see different sides to him. Lani got slammed even before killing Stefan. Lani and Eli bore me to tears and I find that more offensive than accidentally killing someone.
