S22.E05: Line Cook for a Day

Recommended Posts

I wanted to try all those restaurants they staged at.

I knew it was going to be Kat and Corwin eliminated, which bummed me out as I'm ready to lose Vinny (not Lana, but she's distinguished herself more to me by how stunningly beautiful she is and how much I love her voice than by making memorable food).  I agree with what the judges said, they have no idea who he is as a chef, just who all his famous mentors are.

It's pretty cool for the team with immunity to turn out the best dish of the night.  That was the one I most wanted to eat, but the Royal Thai was a very close second.

The editors hate us LOL.  Why the 2 vocal fry’s have the voiceover commentary for 90 percent of the episode had my nerves ratttttttttled!!!!!  loved seeing Sara back…she looks fantastic and coupled with the fact that she’s competing on TOC as well makes her a great edition to a comeback on the circuit of food TV.  Not sure why she was relevant in this episode and she was barely introduced!  Top chef definitely feeling like a lot of choppy new show runners or something.

All of the food places looked quite excellent!  I would like to visit Canada again soon….yum!  The Thai food always looks great to me but thats a different version of Filipino food that I’ve had and would love to try that place.  Or maybe it was the way they separated out the condiments made it more interesting?  I’m definitely going out for Indian tomorrow though….get some cashew butter chicken!  And Vinny pronouncing it karma instead of Kama was hilarious….

Excited for susar next week.  I hope they have to rework the ingredients of his famous salad and make it peasant comfort food.  Or a casserole.

Yes, I was hoping for a Vinnie (not Lana) elimination.  Seemed like he REALLY wanted that hollandaise sauce on it.

Dude was really worked up over the hollandaise.  I actually got his concept but got confused during judging that the hollandaise was on top of an already sauced chicken so it read super heavy.  I missed the other sauce.  What didn’t help was his partner didn’t even seem to eat Indian food, let alone cook it.  And the butter chicken sauce can be quite creamy and not in your face spicy depending on who is cooking it.  Too bad they didn’t make a chutney or pickles to cut through the fat.

Well, partial credit for me—as soon as I saw the Vinny/Lana pairing, I had a feeling it'd be a repeat of the first Quickfire, with him being unnecessarily extra and her letting him, only this time it'd backfire. Hopefully this'll teach him to stop with the teacher's-pet showboating and her to step it up since she's been riding the middle up to this point.

But yay for Tristen's back-to-back wins! We have a frontrunner.

I expected the judges to ask Lana how she felt about the hollandaise, she'd say she wasn't entirely on board, then they'd ask her why she didn't speak up. But they didn't, or at least it didn't make it into the episode if they did.

I like Vinny but he needs to stop trying to show off for his boss or whoever it is he's trying to impress with his "homages".

I can't get over my feeling that Vinny is a bully and a braggart, and that he ran roughshod over Lana. And she let him, because of the apple bowl experience, but the feminist in me is wondering if he would have been equally insistent with a male teammate? We'll never know...

At this point, I would really like to see Vinny and Massimo paired up, to see if they have the same dynamic with each other as they do when working with a female. I was impressed by Paula's pushback. She seemed to know when to step up and when to let the loudest yogi in the world roll. I'm having a very hard time wrapping my head around the fact that Massimo can teach yoga!

Ugh! Now we're stuck with Bailey for at least two more weeks. My mute button is going to get a workout.

Not even mute works. Bailey has very exaggerated expressions and body language. She shrugs all the way up to her ears, cocks her head sideways, flings her hands up in the air, I watch with the sound off and it’s funny to see her gesticulating through it all.

Having said that, I do like her. I know it’s a minority viewpoint but she seems nice enough, and I’m glad LCK made her feel better about her abilities.

That was neither a Kama nor karma sutra sauce, it was a korma made from ground nuts and heavy cream (or in some cases, full fat yogurt). As an Indian, Vinny mispronouncing annoyed me, as did his idiotic idea of smothering a hollandaise over the chicken. However, I am more peeved that the original Chef Mani Panwar who taught Vinny and Lana did not correctly identify the dish and name of the sauce, but rather stuck to whatever inane name he came up with for his menu.

That was a tough elimination. Corwen and Kat are better chefs than some left.

Yeah, after Tristen, Corwin prior to this episode actually had the best track record along with Shuai, and Kat was also looking pretty strong after her episode one fuckup, so to see 2 of the best chefs in the competition prior to this episode leaving like this feels weird, but considering Anya's elimination, it's not the first time.

There just aren't any chefs who are consistently bad enough outside Mimi to be elimination fodder, even the 2 worst chefs overall Paula, and Massimo just never circled the bottom enough to eliminate them compared to taking out frontrunners who choked.

No one's safe this season outside Tristen, who looks like even more of a frontrunner than he did after last episode which says a lot.  Motherfucker was called as one of the top people in the elimination challenge for four episodes in a row in a 5 episode season.

I was also surprised that they decided to create a dish around bacalau and were shocked when Whole Foods didn’t have it LOL.  I mean it’s extremely seasonal in most areas, even for restaurants.  They didn’t even entertain a plan B before they got in the store??  Baffling.

update: I did have my Indian food today to cleanse my palate of watching Vinny yuckifying the karrrrma sutra chicken hollandaise.  I had the lamb saag and aloo gobi with some crispy papadams and mango lassi.  Bread basket was assorted naans and parathas etc.  the only bread I don’t like is the onion kulcha.  Food was dynamite!  My vibration is restored and Vinny can be gone!!!!

Is it just me or is anyone else impressed with Katianna?  It seems as though she's done quite well, quite consistently.  I'm not keeping score on wins, but I would appreciate some feedback about that.  And her daughter is just adorable!

Katianna has 2 quickfire wins(the episode 1 and 3 ones), though one of them was a team challenge, one EC win(episode 3), and got one of the top spots this episode, and was never at the bottom, so she was consistently great.

Interestingly enough, she won both the quickfire, and EC in episode 3.  She's actually one of the best chefs in the competition with Corwin, and Kat out of the race, so it's not just you.  She's honestly probably the second best chef in the season after this week.

You don't have to keep score. There's a Wikipedia page for each of the seasons of Top Chef that has a great chart for that. I've put the link to this season's page below. If you scroll down to the "Contestant Progress" section, you'll see the chart. It keeps track for both the Quickfire and Elimination challenges.

Small *spoiler alert*: The first paragraph on this TC Wiki page does name all five locations where the Canada season was filmed, so if you don’t want to be spoiled about where this group will be heading over the next seversl weeks, scroll down fast and don't look at paragraph #1!

Yeah losing Anya, Zubair, Kat and Corwin is pretty brutal.  I kind of hope we don't lose any more of our front runners (Katianna and Tristen please don't leave next week).

Kind of thought Vinny and Lana should have gone home.  As it seemed like they failed the main portion of the challenge, which is to infuse the ethnic cuisine in the dish.  I have noticed in past seasons, you can kind of get away with not completely following the instructions as long as your food is slightly better.

Either Kat or Corwin have the possibility of coming back. I'm hoping for Corwin, but I do like Kat so I could live with that. I was hoping Vinnie and Lana would be the ones going, I don't like him and I have problems remembering her, I just had to scroll up to find someone who mentioned her name, I can never remember.

Yeah, Lana has been middling, with the judges not talking about her food for pretty much the ENTIRE SEASON until last episode...and it was because the judges didn't like her dish that episode, she's the one chef who pretty much never stood out for the longest time.

Well Tristen won immunity for next week by winning this week's elimination challenge, so we know for sure that he won't be going next week, his mission for next week is pretty much just to try and win that elimination challenge to win immunity for the week after.  For the same reason as you don't want Katianna, and Tristen out, I also don't want Shuai to go anytime soon along with those 2.

I would have been fine with two teams going to LCK, Corwin and Kat, as well as Vinnie and Lana.  Vinnie's getting on my last nerve, and waving bye-bye to him wouldn't bother me a bit.  Hollandaise sauce on that dish was awful.

I was thinking from where do I know Lana and then it came back to me - Lana was on a  Netflix series - Pressure Cooker - and she was so nice there under much harder circumstances. I recognized her because of her beautiful face and sexy voice. BTW Vinny totally reminds me of one of the Pressure Cooker contestants - and this is not a compliment.

My husband is Indian as well, and we were both shaking our heads the entire time. Karma, hollandaise, Vinny, take your pick!

The team could've done so much more with that dish. Like a chaat, much lighter, but still full of the flavors you get in korma.

I traditionally wait to comment until they have "culled the herd" a little bit since there are too many people and too many things going on (and too much editing for narrative) to analyze much other than clear front runners....and that is the case with Tristan, who has been obviously kicking ass even tho his bio was not as attention grabbing as some of the others.

All that being said, this is about the least interesting group I have watched in a long time. I am really having a hard time developing any rooting interest....other than against Vinnie. They all have learned from prior seasons to be on their best behavior and get the most positive PR and that is just not making for interesting television, either positive or negative....at least so far.

I think the show got a lot of that kind of casting out of its system in the early years (with Season 9's bullying as a mid-period exception). Which is fine by me—I want to see creativity, technique, and culinary perspective. I watch Big Brother for arrogant twits being their worst selves. Or Hell's Kitchen for a middle ground between the two.

I also appreciate the "nice personas" we mostly see. Especially these days, if you know what I mean. I'm terrible with names and faces, but that's nothing new for me. That woman who almost got off'd last week-- I was like "who's that" when she appeared early in the show. Had no recollection of her! But I enjoy watching the cooking, even if I don't really remember who they are :)

Corwin and Kat's croquet sounded appalling the way the judges described it.  I had a feeling they would be eliminated over it.  I thought Kat had an idea for arancini, rather than a potato-based croquet.  I don't know if that would have helped with the moisture issue or not, but I do believe they pivoted from their original idea (of course, not having the salt cod was the main issue.)
