The first thing I remember seeing her in was "Murder By Death" -- a very quirky movie.  I thought it was hilarious.

She's just perfect as the parody of Nora Charles.

But I have watched the Sister Act movies so many times, that role is who I primarily associate her with.  She is hilarious when she tells the nuns to try to blend in, as they traipse through a casino.  And delivers the disdain so perfectly in the sequel, when she tells Mr. Crisp "Go with God, Crispy" after thwarting his plan.

Maggie Smith was a dame in all the best senses of the word.  I loved her in everything she did; I have a particular fondness for her in Gosford Park.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is my top Maggie Smith movie, but Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun are two I watch every year.  Here's a taste of all three. R.I.P. Ms. Smith.

I know it's Diana Riggs line but I'll always remember Maggie as THE BITCH DAPHNE!

She was fabulous when she was younger, but I feel like the older, dowager-type roles are where she really came into her own.

Oh yes — I had forgotten she was in Murder by Death! It was one of those I watched over and over as a little girl obsessed with comic murder mysteries.

”Where’s my Dickie? I’m so sorry. Where’s my husband?”

“Don’t let him park the car, Dickie.”

I think I know what I’m watching tonight.

While I did get into a bunch of soaps back in the day, DOOL was never at the top of my list. However, it was my late grandmother's favorite show. I remember in the late 80s/early 90s me and my cousins would watch the last few minutes with her, just to hear the opening theme to Another World which followed after, because it was a cheesy and awesome opening to us kids (IFKYK).

Even still, with those last few minutes, we did get into the whole John! Marlena! Roman! Stefano! Bo! Hope! etc effect (or at least, knew of them).

RIP Drake, and thanks for giving my Yaya, a Greek immigrant to the US in the later stage of her life, some pleasure during her TV watching (she was Team John over Team Roman).

I was shocked and saddened to learn the news of Drake's death.  I eventually gave up on Days in 2008 or so after about a decade and a half of off-and-on watching, but I have fond memories of watching with my mom during her last few years.  One day we were out shopping and I suddenly realized I had forgotten that John and Marlena's latest wedding was airing that day.  "Oh, I set a tape," she declared.  We were able to watch together and comment on everything.

I also wish I could find video of the time that Stefano had kidnapped Marlena and was holding her prisoner somewhere (as usual) but this time, John could see what was happening through virtual reality goggles.  Drake had to act with this contraption on his face and then yell, "I'm coming to get you, Doc!!"  It was quite entertaining.

Drake also played minor league baseball before getting into acting (probably the reason for the "curveball" reference in his family's death announcement).  I believe that in the '90s he played on a baseball team of actors who played one of their games against the all-female Colorado Silver Bullets team (the game was on TV).  He seems to have lived a very interesting life.  RIP.

My siblings and mom watched soaps. Mainly ABC, but all the cool preteens at school watched Days of Our Lives. I wanted to fit in and tried watching. I periodically continued watching because I thought Roman/John was cute. RIP Drake.

For those who don't know (who also may overlap with those who are uninterested), but for clarification Drake Hogestyn first played Roman Brady on Days of Our Lives, taking over the role in 1986. Later, it was revealed his character was actually John Black, who had been brainwashed into believing he was Roman. John became a fan favorite, separate from Roman's storyline.

Gosh, I would say when I started watching this I was more like 9/10. So younger than pre-teen. All of my cohorts wanted to look like Hope (Kristian Alfonso).

Anyway, when I say Roman/John I am referring to just Drake Hogestyn above and not the original/real/ and later to return Wayne Northrup who played the character. Who was ok but I was Team John/Drake all the way.

The master of Smell The Fart acting.

This cracked me up, because I immediately pictured that face he made.  I didn't even watch DOOL, mind you, but it seemed like pretty much any time I came across him while going around the dial, that was the face (especially if it was the closing shot before commercial break).

He was an original!

One story has it that he had been working as a custodian at a record company in Nashville but wanted to break out to be a songwriter and musician [like this was unique]. Anyway, he heard that Johnny Cash was in town so he somehow . ..obtained a helicopter and FLEW it right out to Mr. Cash's suburban home in nearby Hendersonville JUST to present Mr. Cash one of his original songs. Even though he wasn't home at the time, Mr. Cash was so impressed by Mr. Kristofferson's. ..moxie that not only did he agree to give a serious look at Mr. Kristofferson's music but they'd become and stay lifelong friends!

I was interested to read in the linked article that he was a helicopter pilot and rose to the rank of Captain in the US Army.  Cool.  Somehow I never associated him with having had a military background.  And he was a Rhodes scholar???  Wow.

He came from a military family.  When he left the army to go to Nashville to try to make it in music, his parents cut off all contact with him.

I always loved him but never more so than for the way he defended and comforted Sinead O'Connor.

I watched her documentary semi-recently, so that was the first thing I thought of.  He told her "Don't let the bastards get you down" and admired her courage when she stood there and sang.

I didn't really care for Kristofferson's singing voice, but I loved a lot of the songs he wrote.  "Me and Bobby McGee" is one of my favorites, along with "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down".

This has been a real AYFKM day.

I came to Days late, so Drake was my first Roman.  70 is too young.

Glad to hear John Ashton lived to see his Yankees win the division.  Judge Reinhold posted pictures & a lovely farewell on his X-feed.  This one’s my favorite:

Kristofferson was a gut-punch.  Sort of like Robbie Robertson in that respect.  My first thought, after the initial shock, was how he saved Streisand’s Star is Born.  Sure: he played himself, but he also gave tremendous vocals with “Crippled Crow” and that spontaneous duet of “Evergreen” with Barbra.

Pour three out.  Make Kris’s tequila.

Ronin's paternal grandfather is the legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk.

However, if his parents have reason to believe that  Miss Cobain's female parent is not currently sober, I hope Miss Cobain and the younger Mr. Hawk do not let Miss Love babysit for their firstborn son  or even allow unsupervised visits with him.

As per USA TODAY,etc.

Performer Trina McGee (age 54) formerly of Boy Meets World, etc. has disclosed that her pregnancy did not go to term shortly after the first trimester. While she said she was grateful for having had the experience of being in the family way at that time of  her life, she has had depression over the baby not being born since this happened which would have been her 4th and her current husband's 1st offspring- her other three being in their late 20's through early 30's.

I am just gutted over the loss of Drake Hogestyn.

He was the only Roman Brady for me and truly owned that role, but when Wayne was brought back, Drake was more than up for the challenge of revisiting his John Black roots. And no offense to Wayne, but it was such sweet satisfaction that it would be John and Marlena in the end, as the chemistry between Drake and Deidre Hall was (will always be) out of this world.

While he was gone far, far too soon, what an amazing life he had, a double science major in college, with plans of becoming an oral surgeon, only to pivot to a baseball career, being drafted by both the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees, known then by his first name of Don (Drake is his middle name).

drake-hogestyn-baseball.jpg?resize=1200,

An injury would end his baseball dreams while playing for the Yankees farm team but then he was plucked from a group of 75,000 hopefuls for an actor training program by Columbia Pictures (one of only 30).

He had a few roles, including his role on Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which I believe is available on YouTube, but not finding real success when he got the call for Days and thought this was the end of the road for him. He won the role of The Pawn on Days, which was supposed to be very short-term, but his undeniable connection with Deidre made TPTB go in a different direction and determine he was Roman Brady, returned from the grave, and the rest is history.

I also think about how much he loved and was loved in return. Falling for his wife, Victoria, on a baseball field in Fort Wayne, Indiana, when he was 15 and she was 12, and their four beautiful children, including Ben, who followed in his father's acting footsteps. Though it's hard to believe it of my first daytime crush, he was a grandfather of seven.

But definitely the most foxy of silver foxes.

drake-hogestyn.webp

Bidding Drake a fond, if teary-eyed, farewell, and a hearty "fuck you!" to cancer.

But I won't end on that note. I'll end on the scene that my whole life long will be the one I will always remember above the thousands of others I've been privileged to watch over the years.

You know the one.

A certain pier in Salem in 1991.

Starting at the 2:16 mark.

How sad.  I remember a streaming service offering the ability to subscribe and watch a live stream of She Loves Me starring him and Laura Benanti.

I thought he was so handsome and such a good performer.  It looks like he was only diagnosed in July and is now gone. Again, it's so sad.

I saw him way back in the early 2000s in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Sutton Foster was undoubtedly the breakout, but he made a wonderful, charming Jimmy. So sad.

Depending on who you are, celebrity deaths can hit differently. This one breaks me. I'm a weepy mess.

The songs and influence of Kris Kristofferson will live forever. Musical genius. And a pretty damned good actor too. I hope he's already singing and playing with Waylon and Johnny.

God speed, Kris.

Yes. This hits me in the same way as when I contemplate that almost all of The Band are passed now.

When multi-talented genius passes.....

Bowie was even worse for me because he was so young. At least 88 is a good long stretch.
