Tanya is just as obnoxious this season as she was the last, and of course she'd have an assistant. That poor girl is more like a personal servant than assistant anyway, because the husband is right, who brings an assistant with them on vacation?

The grandpa/father/son trio are pretty funny and entertaining to watch.

So one couple thinks they're clearly better than the other because they're "in tuned" to the news and social issues, apparently, but I'm sensing there's maybe some underlying jealousy because they're wealthier? A lot of snarky comments about their wealth. But clearly they can afford lavish vacations too and have plenty in the bank.

Who do we think murders who? I'm guessing something must happen with the hotel's sex worker and her friend. The heads are also very creepy.

I wish they hadn’t brought Tanya back. Her character was my least favorite last season so not looking to spend more time with her.

It’s the first ep so a slower start for introductions is expected. Wish they had given us two episodes instead.

I have mixed feelings about this season so far. I really didn't need them to increase the body count, since I didn't particularly care who died last season. The dynamics between the characters were/are a lot more interesting to me. And there are even more annoying characters than last time. Aubrey Plaza's character is like Rachel and Paula rolled into one, Theo James's character and his wife are walking stereotypes, and F. Murray Abraham's character needs to dial back the flirting and sex talk several notches - we get it, he's a dirty old man. So far I'm OK with Albie, Tanya's assistant, and Aubrey Plaza's character's husband.

I'm concerned about Tanya, since Greg married her despite clearly not being able to stand her, and her assistant mentioned on the phone that she's worth half a billion dollars. I didn't realize last season that she is *that* rich. And he was adamant about getting the assistant out of the way, which makes me think he's plotting something and doesn't want witnesses.

I do like the fact that the Italian characters speak Italian and not English with horrible fake accents.

I'm happy the show is back, if only for the travel porn.

I'm trying to imagine what Tanya even does all day that would require an assistant.  She doesn't work, and it doesn't seem as though she's someone who fills her days with charity work or much of anything.  I'd probably also tell the assistant to be slightly more assertive.  She can obviously still be out of the way and at Tanya's beck and call without needing to stay in her room.

I did laugh at Valencia congratulating F. Murray Abraham on essentially not dying during the trip over.

The resort manager, Valentina, is a nightmare.

Add me to the list that didn't wan't them bring Tanya back.  Plus, Greg is just a dick -- didn't really need him to return either.

Harper seems to think that the world is ending -- maybe just her world is ending and she's one of the floaters in the ocean, who knows at this point.

Then you have Daphne somewhat obsessed with wives murdering their husbands (thanks Dateline).

The creepy heads in the room are just that  --- creepy.  I'm sure they will come into play later.

April Ludgate all grown up is a drag.  Yeah they missed a chance to have Aubrey Plaza be the snarky one.

Ethan looks like a college boy, much younger than Harper.

Cameron is obnoxious and Daphne is suppose to be oblivious?

Mike White must enjoy creating despicable rich people characters.

Will be curious about how they handle the murder.  Seems like they're using the hook or a murder mystery to drive the season again.

Two murders at two different WL resorts?  That should kill the brand.  Would even Tanya return to another WL?  Jennifer Coolidge is funny in the Inside the Episode.

Now, Dominic doesn't seem to terrible but his ex really wanted to be rid of him from her life.  So his true character is yet to emerge?  Christofuh was pretty transparent as far as what his character was about from the beginning.

Are Lucia and Mia suppose to be the common locals, kind of like the waiter kid in season 1?

The White Lotus is back complete with a new location (and scenery porn!) and (mainly) a whole new group of rich assholes that I will hopefully learn to enjoy hating going forward!

Right now, the new groups aren't quite as gripping as the ones from last season, but I'm still curious to see how all of this plays out and all of the twist and turns.  On the surface, I feel like I'm suppose to like Harper and Ethan in comparison to Cameron and Daphne, but thanks to how it all worked out last season, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up being just as bad in their own way.  While the latter two are clearly overprivileged socialites who probably don't even consider non rich folks to be actual people, I can easily see Harper's judgmental behavior and Ethan's meekness end up being toxic in their own ways.

As for the Di Grasso guys, Albie at least seems decent enough, while Grandpa Bert is clearly the pervy old guy who has probably gone through life without any consequences for his lewd comments and overtly flirtatious ways towards, well, everyone.  But it's Dominic that I'm curious about.  He certainly gives off a sense of trying to be the mature one and levelheaded, but judging from his phone call with his wife, he clearly did something horrible.

Tanya is back and somehow still married to Greg, but that marriage barely seems to be functioning at this point.  And now a new character has somehow gotten roped into her drama already.  Poor Portia!

I'm wondering if the two locals are going be collateral damage in some way and more examples of how the locals gets screwed over when caught in this web of rich socialites and wealthy assholes.

Trying not to automatically compare resort managers, but Valentina's temper and bluntness would have totally made Armond cringe (well, until he went fully off the rails there...)

The actors were all good, if a bit atypical so far.  Aubrey Plaza doing the classic "annoyed Aubrey Plaza" look.  F.  Murray Abraham being a dirty old man.  Michael Imperioli barely controlling rage.  Theo James and Meghan Fahy both being all smiles and looking like a million bucks.

Looks like another mysterious death is in store for us: apparently even more than one!  Whatever the reason is, I really can't see how the White Lotus brand wouldn't start earning a reputation.  You are apparently gambling with your life at these particular resorts!

We return again to the lifestyles of the rich and miserable in yet another White Lotus! Our new group of rich weirdos are a little less instantly memorable than the last bunch, but I am intrigued already with where they go from here. The general theme of the show seems to be how the very wealthy and privileged can have all the money in the world in the middle of paradise and still make themselves miserable, usually due to their personal flaws, selfishness, and neurosis.

The only people coming back are Tanya and Greg, who are surprisingly still married, although their marriage is only hanging on by a thread. Its clear that Greg can hardly stand her and is obviously hiding something, but Tanya is too locked in her own weird world to really notice all that much. I can see why they kept Tanya around, she's so weirdly memorable, she's both so pathetic and uncaring, you can feel bad for her at times with how lonely she messy she is but also be so frustrated by how badly she treats her overworked assistant. Poor Portia, of course Tanya feels the need to have an assistant despite the fact that she seems to do nothing, and she pretty much sees Portia as more of an accessory that she can stick in her closet when she doesn't want her around and not a person.

We also meet three generations of the Di Grasso family, grandpa is both that guy who comes to another country and endlessly talks about how his family is from there a few generations back, as well as that old guy who hits on every woman in sight to prove he's still got it, his son seems a lot more mature but is also seeing girls on the side and is apparently going through an acrimonious break up, and his son seems quite nice so far, and is setting up some kind of romance with Portia.

Last of all we have a particularly miserable double date, and I am thrilled to Meghann Fahy from The Bold Type here, she was so good on that show and its great to see her moving onto bigger things. Its also interesting seeing Audrey Plaza doing a variation on April from Parks and Rec, but without the sitcom format letting her snarky downer persona to funny, she comes off as more of an unpleasant judgmental downer. She and her partner think that they're better than the super rich couple because they watch the news, but it also seems like some of that, especially from Harper, seems to be discomfort at her own wealthy lifestyle, they're on this vacation too after all. Not sure about the other couple yet, they're vapid and disconnected with the rest of the world, but are they going to be harmless or more sinister?

All the talk about husbands killing their wives on vacation makes me think that this is where things are going with all of the bodies. With all of these deaths, the White Lotus is going to end up getting a reputation!

Sometimes you really just want to put the characters on mute and enjoy the gorgeous scenery with this show.

"It's a penis, not a sunset."

I'm actually glad Tanya is back. I find her amusing enough that I don't mind watching her fairly repugnant antics. She's self involved but I don't think she's intentionally evil or anything. I'm getting the impression that her assistant is basically an emotional support animal rather than fulfilling any type of practical role in her life. I hope she can help Tanya see that Greg is no good for her. Also, if Greg suggests scuba diving, Tanya definitely needs to say no to that immediately.

The two couples dynamics are interesting to me. I wonder what the deal was with Cameron changing his shorts in view of Harper. That's a basic power play move but maybe he's just oblivious? So far Cameron and his wife seem shallow but I'm sure there's more to them than meets the eye.

I hope Portia and Albie get to hang out, I like them both so far.

If the theme from last season continues, I fear for the prostitute and her friend. I don't want them to drown!

Poor Valentina seems like she's at the end of her rope already. I assume a lot of the guests would be into paying for sex so there's really not much point fighting it, which makes me wonder why Valentina is? Maybe The White Lotus is supposed to be more family friendly?

I'm glad I've got a Sunday night HBO show to watch again.

There's something with Aubrey Plaza and the rich guy that's going to happen. Either he wants her to defend him from sexual harassment claims or she's working with one of his accusers, I feel like that's going to come into play. I think they were invited on the trip with ulterior motives and it's her law practice that's the key.

I felt the same! The way he "casually" brought up how he's had to deal with so many situations like that lately was telling. I also think the undressing while she was in the room was intentional and will play into setting her up or discrediting her somehow.

LOL. There was one other LOL line too.
I wasn't sure I wanted to watch another season because it seemed so grim, but 2 LOLs per episode are enough for me.

And I kind of loved Dominic's exasperated ex on the phone eventually devolving into every other word being fuck. For me it was "stupid."

Plus Jennifer Coolidge. I've loved her since Legally Blonde (and she's going to be in Legally Blonde 3!) and her guest-starring role on The Closer, and the few episodes of that cupcake show I caught.

Tanya's now loveless marriage perfectly shows why I never got involved after my divorce.
But I wish this wasn't how it turned out. I thought he was just dying?
No more coughing so far.🤷🏻‍♀️
Instead he's just mean.

Oh, Tanya:  Serve him divorce papers with 2 macarons on top. You got a prenup, right? If not, fire the assistant.

The first season set a high bar so we'll see how the sophomore outing does. It'll be hard to top someone walking into her boss' unlocked office to find him naked and on his knees, heartily tossing the salad of one of her co-workers who's bent over the desk. I think Murray Bartlett probably won his Emmy for that one insane moment.

They're doing the same thing they did in the first season, having part of the dialogue in the local language instead of all in English. I like that.

TMW you realize--again--that your ex doesn't want you back. Because she's screaming it in your ear over the phone. Christophuh has some urges he perhaps hasn't been so good at controlling.

Had to laugh at Tanya's husband Greg putting in that work but she just wanted to eat snacks. Wonder what he's up to?

Aubrey's character is going to hook up with Theo's, and her husband is helping to engineer it, right?

Yeah, that kept bothering me because I couldn't figure out if it was intentional.

I find her character incredibly sad. I know Jennifer Coolidge usually plays comical characters, and as much as I like her she seems to be kind of a one-trick pony. But despite her goofy mannerisms Tanya herself is deeply broken and only vaguely self aware of it.

In fact I found the entirety of the first season depressing and couldn't figure out why so many people thought it was funny. Every character seemed to be suffering some sort of midlife crisis or mental breakdown. I've tuned in for this season primarily for the cast. Can't resist a show with Aubrey Plaza, Theo James, Michael Imperioli and Adam DiMarco - an actor you'd only know if you watched The Magicians. So nice to seem him moving up in the world, so to speak, on such a high profile show.

I like TWL S2 so far because there’s NO moody/rude/entitled teenagers. Yay‼️

Am not sure which one is more annoying - Lucia or Grandpa Bert’s farting. 😆

ETA: What if Dominic and Lucia are actually related??! 🤨

Cameron & Daphne look good together but Ethan & Harper don’t look compatible at all. She looks like a big sister to him.

Greg has stopped coughing now? I thought he has some kind of illness. He was so rude re the macaroons, Tanya can do better. Divorce him T!!!

With all the money in the world, why can’t Tanya buy some fancy flat shoes/sandals or trainers for the vacation? Those kitten heels aren’t your best friend.

Various duck lips in less than 15 seconds! 😆

That is a perfect description.  I feel bad for Tanya.  She is obviously lonely and probably married Greg thinking he'd cure her grief and loneliness, only to find out they don't like each other much.  So she hires a personal assistant for someone to talk to but is so wrapped in her own feelings she doesn't see how badly she treats Portia.  Less than a pet.

I'm glad Portia and Albie met and can be friends or more.

I know lots of Daphnes.  Sweet and perky and clueless.  She'd be fun to travel with except for her asshole husband.  Yeah, his dropping his pants was totally calculated.  Not sure what he's after though, sex or money.  Harper warned Ethan that Cameron would be after him for something.  She may be a joyless drag that sucks all the air out of the room, but she's not wrong about Cameron.

Or this could all be flipped, and more than once. We're only one episode in.
I think Harper being an attorney who represents sexual harassment plaintiffs is not for nothing.
Maybe Cameron wants to set Harper up to fail?

Question:
In the opening scene, was Daphne the blonde who went for "one last swim" and found a dead body?
Or was she just Daphne-esque?

Not like Cameron and Daphne inviting them means they're paying for Harper and Ethan as well?

So if Harper doesn't like Cameron, why go on holiday with them?

Especially if it means adjoining rooms, having meals with them, going out on excursions and laying around the pool or the beach with them?

Marriage is not for everyone & is too lightly taken into. Especially for a woman. More often than not we lose ourselves and have  to make too many concessions. So much to be said for staying single, becoming independent & living the life you want. Getting sick of seeing so many unhappy marriages irl & portrayed that I want to start a movement.

So far I only like the assistant, Christopher Moltosantis son🙂& all the Italians because  abbiamo qualcosa in comune. 🙂

Yeah. Considering how upbeat she was in that scene I'm also guessing that Cameron wasn't one of the other bodies referred to by Valentina...but then again, depending on how this plays out later in the series I suppose she could also have been happy to see him dead at that point.

That's my understanding, or at least, there was nothing that made me think Cameron and Daphne were paying for anyone but themselves.

Ethan and Cameron were college roommates, then started hanging out together, and then became friends.  They weren't necessarily close. It sounds like Ethan recently became wealthy by selling his company, and Harper snarked about it, like "So you just got rich by selling your company, and now all of a sudden they want to vacation with us?"   I don't know if she just thinks they're rich snobs who had no interest in spending time with them but now think they're worthy because they're rich, or if she has other suspicions.

Cameron was the wealthy college roommate whose personality seems to imply he would have lorded it over Ethan under the guise of generously paying for Ethan to attend pricey events to be his wing man.
But now Cameron has money so is probably paying for at least his and Harper's room (and Harper, as an attorney, could pay, but she doesn't want to be there, so probably not, but maybe).
But Cameron probably believes Ethan now owes him.

This setting seems more in White's wheelhouse. I love the hotel manager and her anger. She has the manner of someone who can barely tolerate her guests. For a satire I love this so much.

Also having men or women who are overt sex workers in the public part of the hotel can be awkward so don't blame her.

I ran into a man and sex worker in an elevator in Canada (always Canada! No where else). The guy was so embarrassed.  The lady and I exchanged  goodmornings and I complimented her boots. He kept his face down and stared at the floor. Heh.

even if I personally don't understand why this show is considered prestigious.

Anything airing at 9:00 pm ET on HBO on a Sunday night is about as high profile as you can get, TV-wise. Plus Mike White seems to be generally popular with critics and fans alike. Personally I never got the hype over Season 1, I found it mostly boring and depressing and couldn't figure out for the life of me what everyone was gushing about.

Ha, I personally never considered White Lotus prestigious (like say Downtown Abbey or Breaking Bad), in spite of all the award show fawning over it. I look at it more high end, healthier junk food that you get at Whole Foods vs. the bag of Doritos you feel terrible scarfing down from your local CVS or Walgreens.

Theo James was in Sanditon 3 years ago, which had great costumes and scenery, but a meandering plot and a not so-stellar cast.
White Lotus knows where it's going, and has f'in' F. Murray Abraham.
A couple of things that set prestigious shows apart?

But, yeah, I didn't know White Lotus was referred to as "Prestigious."
Regardless, it seems like a totally subjective adjective.

Maybe not quite so dramatic. 😂 I think undressing in front of Harper was just what men like Cameron consider a power move. I do think he wants an actual business investment from Ethan. It's a similar theme as Natasha and Tanya's storyline last season, except that Natasha was very passive and expected things to just happen for her, whereas Cameron is pursuing what he wants very aggressively.
