Jeopardy! Season 39 (2022-2023)

Great J round today - I ran "Here, There and Everywhere" and got 4 right in the rest of the categories. Quite a contrast to my performance in last night's Masters games.

DJ - not so good. Had two horrible categories - "New New Orleans Music" and "Straight to Jail". And no FJ today either - thought of Canada, but that's the second largest country in area, so no.

TSs today were franking, butterfly, flamingo, The Secret Garden and customs.

The "After School" category bugged. Aren't most of responses in this type of category usually close to the word, in this case school? 3 of the responses began with "t" which is after school, but... I got 4 right in the category, but it put some doubt in my mind.

Jeez, that was not a good game.  There were what, 10 stumpers, and a lot of first wrong answers.  I mean, Juneteenth, really?!?!?!  It wasn't that Hannah was particularly good tonight, it was that the other contestants were terrible.

I think the fast paced Masters games have spoiled me because this game seemed so slow.

Glad Hannah won again.

I got the ts's or missed DDs of franking, butterfly, Customs, and The Secret Garden. I knew it was a long legged bird in Alice in Wonderland but said crane instead of flamingo.

Not quite an instaget for FJ but pretty close.

I totally guessed for FJ, and thought it was a wild-assed guess, but was gobsmacked to see it was correct!  Yay, asterisk!

And speaking of WAGs, Hannah's competitors had some doozies.  Juneteenth in February?  Okay....

And so many TS!  I got butterfly, arsenic, customs, Secret Garden, flamingo, and Lady Chatterly's Lover.

Hannah reminds me of an actress named Sarah Brown. It's not really that they look alike it's that their voices and mannerisms seem similar to me at least.  I was glad to finally figure this out after a couple days of being bugged by it.

Oh, boy -- that must have been a long flight home for Hope.  She was going to wind up with zero even if she got it right, so she was out of the game either way, but to end on guessing Juneteenth for a February event?  Ouch.  Her Homeland Security guess (an agency that didn't exist at the time of the clue) seemed to be a situation where she rang in and then tried to come up with a response, but she seemed confident in Juneteenth.  That had to be a very frustrating game for her, so I hope she enjoyed the overall experience.

After two games in a row where I came very close to running the entire first round, I only ran two categories in it tonight.  I ran movies and 1900s and got all but one in House and everywhere, but missed two each in the rest.

I kicked ass in DJ, though, so it turned out to be one of those oddball games where I do better in that round -- I ran French, jail, New Orleans, and Believe It or Not (thank you, Kathleen Madigan, for teaching me what noodling is).  I missed two each in the others.

I correctly guessed FJ (based on size), so after a mildly disappointing start it was a very good game for me.

I noticed that, too -- "tonic" and "tramp" both seemed farther alphabetically removed from "school" than is typical for such categories.  (Alas, skull and spoon, which were much more typical, are the two I missed -- I'm not familiar with the logo, and I have only ever seen that game played in old movies, so I would have needed probably a good deal more time for it to spring to mind.)

All the French I studied in high school and college has never really benefited me in the real world, but it’s often useful in Jeopardy, so I guess that’s something?

I try to avoid throwing shade at dumb Jeopardy responses because who knows what idiotic thing I’d say under the lights and the pressure, but… yeah. Juneteenth. It’s in the name. She’s going to be living that one down for a long time.

OMG, this is hilarious (well, to me) -- I read the clue as asking for the logo of Jolly Rancher (the candy), not the Jolly Roger symbol.  No wonder it was only worth $200.

It's one of those congressional privileges that comes up a lot I think in news stories and discussion as to whether it's legitimately needed or is just abused

I think it was the end she was in the  negative and just trying to throw out any answer that might get her out of the negative. 

But I believe even if correct she would have only been at zero.

Every once in awhile, there used to be some minor scandal or other about a Congressman franking his personal correspondence (it's only supposed to be used for official business).

I did too 🤣 Made sense at the time even though it doesn't really. Still, even customs (as pointed out so amusingly by @Katy M) doesn't really make a lot of sense.

I ran Classic Movies, and did well (but not great) in a few other categories. The After School one flummoxed me, and I think it's because as mentioned, the words were not as close as other times this category's been used.  At least, that's what I'm telling myself.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I noticed that there were 2 answers, and one was after school and the other not.  Like death and taxes.

Yeah, they were all part of a pair, but only one word fit the category.

How does everyone feel about giving credit to "abode" & "bode" (instead of "abide") in "Differs by a letter"? My feeling is technically correct, but violates the intention of the category.

I got FJ.

I got the missed clues of polynesian, William Styron, Stout, absolution, Meghan Markle and something I can't read for the life of me, but it looks like kenuebankrupt.

I got the entire categories of differs by a letter and watching stories right.

87% / 63% / 74%

Finally, a great round this week! Ran Differs By a Letter, Historic Eras & Ages, and Lions & Tigers & Beers, missed two in Travel USA, and one in Authors and Country Music (especially impressive since I am not a country music fan, nor do I drink beer).

Not so great in the second round, though still better than I've been doing much of this week…missed one in Asian Geography and Watching My Stories, two in Met-ieval Art, Notable Black Americans, and Quadrisyllabic Words, and three in Grandma.

Did not get FJ (though in hindsight I feel like I should have been able to figure it out), but got all three DDs and the TS of Polynesian, William Styron, and stout.

That's what I was thinking. I looked it up to see if there was another definition I was unaware of, and then just reread the clue to make sure I remembered it. So yeah, I don't think it fits.

An okay game for me.  At least it was faster than yesterday's game.

I got the ts's of Polynesian and stout.  I confused Tom Tryon for William Styron or I would have had that one too.

I despaired when I saw the category for FJ -- history is most definitely not my strong suit.  And I just took a shot in the dark and guessed, and was again surprised to be correct!

Since I'll be watching Top Chef tonight, it was an archive game for me.  Unfortunately, there were quite a few clues with photo hints, but not being able to see them was largely a non-issue; I either didn't need them, they wouldn't have helped, or I'm confident enough I'd have known had I been able to see I'm giving myself credit.

The Polynesian TS surprised me (even with Pacific in the clue, someone guessing that for the P doesn't surprise me; no one then coming up with Polynesian does).  And any time a religious clue I get is a TS surprises me at least a little, as with absolution.

I almost ran the first round again, but I missed one each in authors (I joined the contestants in not knowing/remembering who wrote Sophie's Choice) and country music (had there been a picture of Shania Twain that's another one I could have confidently given myself credit for, but just based on the text I had no idea).

Not so much in DJ; I ran words and geography and got all but one in Black Americans, but missed three each in stories and art and two in grandmas (both of which were TS, so at least I was in good company).

FJ was an instaget.

Interesting that tonight Hannah had a temporary brain fail early on. I wondered if the contestant life was getting to her. But then she took off and once again had a great win. FJ was easy. Don't know of any other American military officer buried in England except that traitor. Re: the contestant life, I also wonder how Ken lasted through 74 games.

Did I hear wrong or did the lady on the end (sorry for forgetting her name - not Hannah) answer a Country Music question with “what is the Chicks?” when they are the Dixie Chicks? Maybe I just heard wrong but if not, that’s a pretty big miss.

Weird game for me - my concentration and timing seemed off. I blame it on the aftereffects of having one of my pupils dilated earlier in the day and the vision in that eye being wonkier than normal.

Actually did better in the DJ round than the J round. Only 3 TSs all day - William Styron, absolution and the Duchess of Sussex (aka Meghan Markle).

Missed the Garth Brooks clue since I didn't think the picture looked like him. Don't know if I can blame it on vision issues since I was fine with Keith Urban's pic.

And FJ - thought Lafayette but like others have said didn't think he would be buried in a church in England. Did think of Benedict Arnold but don't think I really settled on anything before the think music ended. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

p.s. I'm starting to notice Mayim's pauses more again this week.

I know they changed their name but in my head (and playlist) they are still the Dixie Chicks. I wonder if that would have been accepted.

We were soldiering through, until our local ABC affiliate preempted last night’s game for a special on the local (Allen, TX) shopping mall killings. I have no doubt it would have been, since that's how they were known at the time of the clue -- just with a host note of the "Yes, now known as the Chicks" variety.  (It might well even be accepted in a clue that asked about them post-change unless the name change was the point of the clue.)  I love them, so knew the correct response instantly, but fully expected to see "Dixie" when I brought up the contestants' response on the archive, so was pleasantly surprised to see the updated name was given by the one who rang in.

This is why I was bamboozled during this category, (well, not when it came to Gin and Tonic - I couldn't give a...care (as my kids say) about what Princess Margaret drank). So I wouldn't have gotten that one in any case.

Oh I hate that - I deliberately schedule my dilations so that I can see by Jeopardy time (my eyes take a LONG time to recover).

Me, I've been reading the Outlander books...

I almost ran a couple of categories and did reasonably well in the others.

When it came to Benedict Arnold, I thought it was odd that it would be included on his gravestone (given the turncoat thing), but he was the only one I could come up with. I understand there's a possibly not true story that he regretted becoming a turncoat later in life. So the engraving would make sense in regard to that story.
