But as a player? Not so much fun for me to watch. YMMV, of course.

I don't really care how much a player wins, I guess.  As long as players I like win and ones I don't like lose, I'm happy.  Well, and as long as I do better, of course, lol.

Well, to be fair, they were usually referred to as just "The Dingoes".

It wasn't a great game for me, I got close in FJ, time wise, but no cigar.

I wanted that crayon set so much - but for some reason, I saw the date and decided it was a smaller set. Sigh...

I'll be off the forum for a few weeks. I'll miss you guys even though I'll be having fun. Going on an adventure of a sort.

Have fun & be Safe!

I really don't get this attitude.  People can wager what they feel comfortable with.  Clearly it's not hurting Mattea at all since she's still winning and has amassed quit a nice total even with "timid" wagers.

and if she guessed wrong, she'd be out a lot more, so i think she's just being prudent

nothing wrong with that

Thursday 4/14: Fairly consistent, at least - 77% / 73% / 75%

J!: Missed one in every category except What Ever, where I missed two.

DJ: Ran Number words, missed two Science Names and three Geographic Verse and one each in everything else.

FJ: I guessed and was right! I couldn't remember which wife was last, and the only ones I could think of were Anne B. and two of the Catherines (Parr and Aragon).

TS: Matthew Arnold (had to read Dover Beach for my Victorian Lit class in college), menu costs, 1984 (DD).

I could really do without the commentary before making her wager every time Mattea gets a DD.

I'm going to be watching something else tonight, so I just checked the archive.  I'm giving myself credit for Drew Barrymore, because there's no way I wouldn't have recognized a picture of her, and for the other clues with photo hints, I either didn't need them or it wouldn't have helped.

The Eveready TS surprised me, but I only knew it because Ever + battery = Eveready; I had never noticed the cat in the logo (in my semi-defense, I use Duracell, so it's not like I've been looking at them in my drawer for years and missing the black cat).

I was terrible in fast food; Panda Express was the only one I knew, and I correctly guessed Taco Bell, but that was it.  But, shockingly, I wasn't terrible in the Bible category; I got all but one (wilderness, which I really should have guessed).  I also got all but one in mythology, because for most you didn't have to actually know any mythology.  I ran the other two categories, so it was a good first round other than the fast food.

I had a really good DJ; I ran her, number words, and economics (thanks to some very lucky guesses!) and missed two each in the other half.

I didn't get FJ, though, because "Whoever Henry VIII's final wife was" would not count.  The only wife whose name I know is Anne Boleyn, and I knew it wasn't her, so I didn't have a guess.

I also got the family right, but didn't pick the right stepmother, so no FJ for me.  I can never remember which of Henry's wives was when.

The only TS I got were Eveready, Indiana, and plate tectonics.

FJ was an instaget. But, Ken's logic wasn't foolproof on that one.  Katherine Parr was Henry's last wife, but she wasn't the last to die. That would have been his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves.

I got the missed clues of Indiana, menu, 1984, and plate tectonics.

I got the entire categories of Bible translations and words from myth right.

I had a good night.

I suspect they, like me, didn't realize what the category was going for until after that (it was the first clue chosen in the category). I have never noticed the cat, either (I usually get Energizer or Duracell).

Going by that logic, Katherine was also no longer his wife because he was dead, and she was remarried to Thomas Seymour.  Once a stepmother, always a stepmother.

The plate tectonics one seemed to be kind of splitting hairs between continental drift and plate tectonics being separate theories and made it a bit confusing what they wanted.  They are both part of the same larger idea.

Also, I am guessing most users on this thread are older and hence don't have much exposure to them, but the girls who have facial piercings and that alternative look typically have something wrong with them mentally - not an insult per se, but it's common enough to make me have anticipatory annoyance whenever seeing one.

Very offensive, both for the assumption that older (whatever that means) people don’t have exposure to facial piercings, and that women (I’m not even going to say girls, since you’re referencing Mattea, who is a woman, not a girl) with facial piercings are mentally unstable.

Just pointing out that Mattea isn’t a Torontonian, she lives there now, I assume for work or school. She’s from Nova Scotia, and once an Easterner, always an Easterner. Besides, only people born and raised in TO proudly claim that as their home. The rest of Canada just tolerates them.

I’m rooting for Mattea; I find her charming.

It’s not quite on my last nerve yet, maybe fifth to last nerve. But she’s definitely annoying my husband. In his words: “Her tiny baby hands are freaking me out!”

I had a really good day today. No FJ (can never keep those royals straight), but I ran quite a few categories. I count it as a win.

We had questions about drunken orgies and 420 (and Snoop Dogg).

What is going on in the writer's room at Jeopardy?

Well, something has to balance out all those Bible-themed categories! Does the coded meaning of "420" mean that contestants can't use that number to wager?

I only realized the correct FJ answer after Ken explained the significance of "orphaned." I thought it referred to the loss of her mother.

For those who have trouble remembering all the wives of Henry VIII, this might help.

I know I got a couple of ts's and the missed DD of 1984 but it was a very ordinary game for me.

Per FJ category I did pre-call the wives of Henry VIII, along with Margaret Thatcher, of course, but I had some trouble dragging Catherine Parr from my mind.  I did pull it out in time though.

I continue to enjoy Mattea's run; her idiosyncracies don't bother me.

I admire Mattea - she has done incredibly well at something I have never even been able to attempt so Brava! to her.  That being said ... some of her offhand remarks are getting on my nerves (I am more listening than watching these days except for FJ - has become my habit over the last few months so appearance/mannerisms haven't been an issue for me with any recent players).  Lord knows I can ramble with the best of them but I am not on television potentially slowing down game play.

She is cheerful, lightening fast and clearly having a wonderful time - however I don't really need to know every aspect of her thought process - it falls into what I call the "Frasier" principle of being allowed to have an unexpressed thought (based on what was for me a classic exchange between Frasier and Niles).  Last night when she was answering the Lake Ontario question, she added "I hope it's" to her response which lead me to yell "who cares what you hope and that would get you disqualified on Wheel of Fortune".  I don't think she heard me but I felt better.

Now I shall take my old fogey self to a quiet corner as long as you kids all get off my lawn.  Happy Easter/Passover/Ramadan/Spring Holiday to all!

Not according to this article, though that's from 2019. The five banned wagers are numbers that refer to sex, satan, and white supremacy. (Since they're okay with clues about it, I'd guess it's still okay to wager.)

I was just on the phone with a longtime Jeopardy-watching friend.  We briefly discussed the inconsistencies of TV scheduling these days.  One of many things I appreciate about this show is that, like few other non-news shows, it's on each weekday without exception beyond predictable breaks (and not accounting for the odd preemption).  This creature of habit / ritual is grateful.

I knew the FJ answer thanks to a long term probably unhealthy interest in Tudor History plus recent viewings of some programs on BritBox and Acorn.  But I will always thank a musical whenever possible and several songs from Six appear in snippets in my head on a fairly regular basis.

And was it just me, or was Ken throwing some serious shade at Ricky Gervais and his conspicuous atheism?

I wondered about that, his reaction was ... strange. As a long-time Gervais fan, I've known for years he's atheist. It's never affected me in any way, pro or con, about how I feel about him. I guess I found it strange Ken didn't know something that's been very public for years. Ken is suppose to know EVERYTHING!

I thought he was just being sarcastic about the fact that Ricky is rather outspoken about the subject. "(Ken: Yeah, I guess he's an atheist; I had no idea.)"

(I love Ricky Gervais, and am always entertained when he goes on Stephen Colbert since they always seem to wind up discussing religion, but I had not heard of the show referenced in the clue. I have mostly seen him on talk shows and some of his standup. I have his After Life series on my Netflix list; need to watch that soon.)

Yeah, I've never been religious (I say I was raised Methodist but it didn't stick). It wasn't something I thought much about, but when all the big atheism books were coming out (Dawkins, Hitchens, etc.) I sort of went down a rabbit hole of atheist content online, so that's mostly the context in which I've came across him.

Friday 4/15

77% / 47% / 62%

J!: Ran three categories! Handle with Air, Country of Laws, and TV Hosts. Missed one Homophonic pair and three each in the others.

DJ: Um, yeah let's not talk about that.

FJ: Not entirely sure why, since I'm really not that familiar with Lee's work (I don't think I've actually seen any of his movies, though I do want to see BlacKkKlansman) but I came up with FJ almost immediately.

TS: Los Alamos and Post cereal

I've noticed Mattea's hands are very lovely, just as a baby's hands are, although hers are not particularly small, just shaped a bit more like babies' than many adult hands. Her hands are a lot like those of The Mona Lisa.

image.png.cb587b3f1b42564beec631061be54775.png

Everything about Mattea that posters have mentioned they find annoying are things I do too. So she does make me cringe out of self-awareness of tics I will never master. I think faster and better when I give voice to my thoughts. Mattea appears to do the same. But her wealth of knowledge is much more than mine.

She said today that she was still 17 after her first year of college? So she went a year early like I did too.

The only TSs I got today were Revelation and St. Anne.

I love that Ken knows Space Camp since I can recite that movie verbatim.  Allan was funny saying a surprise launch into space would make for a better story than the one he just told.

I also enjoyed Mattea's guess of "scorn corn" instead of "cede seed" for "to give up grain kernels", even though it's just a rhyme, not a homophone -- it made me laugh.

But, yikes, I was really off my game in the first round; I ran four categories, but I was terrible in the other two -- I missed all but one in zoom and three in America.  Not appalling, but I'm typically very strong in the first round (while DJ can go either way), so that was disappointing.

I wasn't stellar in DJ, either.  I ran scientific and got all but one song, but Sense and Sensibility was the only one I knew in literary, and I missed two each in the others.

FJ was an instaget, so at least I ended on a high note.

I didn’t really see him as a jerk in this one. Although his character is gruff and abrasive, it’s just emotional cover for his grief over his wife’s death. He also starts to evolve as the season progresses and he begins to make other connections. I really enjoyed the first season, found it funny and sweet, and plan to watch the second as soon as I have time. I know Ricky Gervais is not everybody’s cup of tea, but I generally like him a lot and thought this was one of his better efforts.

I enjoyed it but then again I'm British & it was certainly more geared toward a British sense of humour. To me it was more about dealing with the death of a much loved wife and the depression that can entail than RG being a jerk for the sake of it although it does suit him.

Netflix donated in conjunction with C.A.L.M. about 25 "talking benches" to put into parks for people to chat & reflect if they are dealing with depression etc.

I've seen many British shows I like and I understand perfectly well the attempt at humor coming from a place of depression and adjustment disorder from his loss. And ive also seen him in many other things and gnerally find him funny.

I just think the show misses the mark in what it is attempting and finding humor from the depths of tragedy.

No offense taken by me. Your husband makes me laugh too. And I love absolutely everything about Mattea, even her TBHs, and I hope she stays to play for a long time. Although now she is making the ToC extremely difficult. If she plays Matt and Amy ... yikes. I'd want a three-way tie for champion.

The interviews are now my favorite part of this show. Ken's comments make me enjoy this show more than ever before.
