Mattea risks only $2k because she wants to “keep her lead”? Come on, she could have lost $10k and still been way ahead. Live a little!

She mentioned on Twitter that she found it hard to escape from the 'be thrifty' frame of mind when wagering (at least that was her thought on her first day, I think)

A fun thing from Twitter also is that one of the Matt's that have been on welcomed her to the Matt's who have been on Jeopardy club.

Me too! I haven't seen her in ages.

I don't recall Norse Mythology being taught in my English classes (lit major here), I learned my Norse Mythology primarily through a New Zealander tv show called "The Almighty Johnsons" (which, if you have access to it, is a lot of fun).

I learned my Greek Mythology mostly from the D'Aulaires, I enjoyed it so much I read the Roman and Norse ones also. I remember answering a Greek Myth related question once in grade school and the teacher was impressed! lol

Is that like Project Steve (any scientist who is named Steve or any variation thereof can sign on)?

This is Mattea's actual tweet concerning her wagering at least the first day: The second is that I’m not great at turning off the “personal financial responsibility” part of my brain that’s afraid of throwing away thousands of dollars on a whim. This is a good trait to have in real life and a very bad one to have if you want to max out your winnings on J!

Speaking of musicals, I'm embarrassed that my response to FJ was "Oliver."  I'd like to think that, had I actually been standing there for 30 seconds, I would have remembered to add the "Twist" part, but I can't say for certain! 😀

I exchange FJ responses via text with a good friend. I figure if I typed in Oliver, and then I had enough time to correct my text to add Twist, that I would have had enough time to do it on television!

I love that.

I respect her small wagering when she's way ahead and basically can't be caught. I don't know that I'd be happy about throwing away $10,000 when keeping it was a sure thing.

Oliver Twist may well be my fastest FJ response ever.

While I got Oliver Twist right away, the Metropolis TS had me yelling it at the tv. Metropolis, Illinois ... a big YES to that. Drive north from the biggest Superman statue and see the world's biggest catsup bottle.

Looking forward to rooting for Mattea with Ken as host.

I knew FJ was Dickens but couldn't come up with Oliver Twist. I was saying "Please, sir, may I have some more," but for the life of me couldn't remember his name

Having written down a bunch of 19th century authors during the commercial break, I went through the same thought process, but got to Oliver Twist just in time. I wonder if I’d had to watch on YouTube—–without the commercials–—if I would have had an instaget or a no-get?

So nobody else yelled “Smallville!” instead of Metropolis? 😊
Yeah, I kind of skipped over the first part of the clue: "Smaller than it sounds . . . "

That's a much nicer thought than mine, which was that many people familiar with Norse mythology today know it through its appropriation by white supremacist groups

My familiarity with names from Norse (and Egyptian) mythology is rooted in the Stargate franchise. Recent mentions of the names in reference to Avenger franchise characters in pop culture discussions have refreshed my memory of those names, like Loki and Thor. There’s also a Thor on my current favorite comedy, Ghosts. That Thor was very prejudiced against Danes, but he’s becoming more accepting of others lately.

My two cents on the "Mattea looks like..." conversation: Gabrielle Carteris, especially in the scenes where Andrea is wearing glasses.

I got a lot of TS's Friday: daGama, Eisenhower/Churchill, The Heidi Chronicles ("Heidi" was even in the clue, but I guess none of the contestants were theater buffs), the Glengarry Glen Ross DD, the Edict of Nantes, Hamlet, and Yggdrasil. I didn't know some of the other Norse myths, though.

I like Mattea but hate the runaways. I hope she gets some better opponents in the upcoming week, like Reagan on Thursday.

I never consider Luxembourg to be a "small country" because I always lump it together with Belgium & Netherlands. Vatican is the one I tend to forget, but never Liechtenstein. When I was a kid, my mom had a 45 record of "The Liechtensteiner Polka" that she played incessantly.

Yep, workhouse was the dead giveaway on this one.  Jeopardy loves Dickens and loves Oliver Twist.  I actually got a whole Dickens category when I was a contestant.

I mostly know it from Wagner's version of the Germanic versions.  He never bothered to mention Thor, let alone the name of his hammer.  Although I probably should've gotten that one from the episode of Big Bang Theory where Penny, Bernadette and Amy have an argument about it.

How the heck did Mattea get Broadway's "How to Succeed in Business Without Even Trying"? That's even a bit before my time, although I knew it.

I got it because I'm familiar with the 1967 film, which I've never seen and only know from film classes.  I tend to confuse with Sweet Smell of Success (I usually think Tony Curtis was in the wrong one), but came up with the right title this time.

Yeah, I think we might've touched on it in Social Studies in middle school, even then it was mostly Greek & Roman mythology.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying has some great songs even if a few plot lines are problematic these days.  I got to see the Matthew Broderick version on Broadway in the mid 90s just before the Tony Award nominations came out.

I enjoyed the whole show but when Lillias White finished her part of "Brotherhood of Man", the roof threatened to come off the theater - there is a version of it being done for the 1995 Tony Awards on YouTube that captures the spirit well.  Pure joy!

Not a great night. In J! I Ran Animal Expressions and all but one Symphon"E"; got only one Capital and missed two in everything else. In DJ I tanked Presidential names…never even heard of some of them (I was trying to come up with possibilities during the commercial and thought of George Clinton and John David Washington). Missed one element, metaphor and origin.

FJ was an instaget, at least.

TSes were Boppy (DD), purple finch (never heard of it but he's pretty), and blue (color of liquid oxygen).

Yay for Mattea - five days! (But I would have been okay with the guy winning, too.)

FJ was an instaget.  If you don't know the latin for cow, I can see why you wouldn't get the answer and bov would be just as good as anything else you might comeup with.

I got the missed clue of George Kennedy.

Instaget FJ for me -- helps that I've worked with vaccinia virus, I suppose.  Bov was an interesting guess.

TS I got were purple finch (purple robin? just no), Sir Walter Scott (thank you, Authors card game), poodle, and George Kennedy.

I need a mnemonic to remember which is Walter Scott and which is Walter Raleigh, because I always reverse them and it's happened twice in the past week or so.

How did we have so many clues left on the board in what felt like a fast-moving game?

I kick myself because I knew "vache" is cow in French, but I couldn't get to vax. I know bov was wrong, but I had "bovine" stuck in my head, so I get how the players got there.

I am extremely glad you asked because although I did not think that I habitually confuse them, when the question came up today my brain went "Sir Walter . . . NOT RALEIGH!! AAAARGH!!!" and I could not get Scott to surface. But your question calmed me down and got me thinking of how to access it. May it help us again in the future!

My father is an avid birder and I have to say that the purple finches I have seen here are not quite as bright as the bird looked on the screen. But I knew enough to guess finch.

Sometimes it's really hard to decide what direction to tackle these kind of clues from. I don't know if they could have got there by thinking of what was big news in 2021 and settling on vax from that angle without knowing Latin or French. I know vacca ==> vaccine too well so once I had the answer I was just cheering for Mattea as they revealed the responses. I had thought that the guy might come up with it because he had been good throughout the game but I thought that Latin word origins seemed to be something Mattea had done well with and she stood a chance.

I live in Toronto so I feel like I need to watch Jeopardy pretty promptly now in order to avoid being spoiled as to the outcome.

I'm glad she did too and secured her spot in the ToC as a 5 day champ, but she really shouldn't have after the Fermium DD left her in second going into FJ. I feel bad for Michael since I suspect he's going to hearing from a lot of people on how he lost because he thought bov was a buzzword for last year. I wonder if he got bovinated. Vanessa was wrong too, but she didn't really have a shot of winning so it's not going to sting as much I would think.

I spent a semester abroad in Spain in 2001 during the mad cow outbreak. Each time our group would pass a herd of cows we'd say "vaca loca" or mad cow in Spanish. So, that was an instaget for sure.

That president category was hard, but it should have been easy. If you know the order of the presidents, and what number each is, picking the first and last names is a gimme, even if you don't know the person their name combination refers to.

But I sure didn't have their numbers all memorized, and I guess no one on the panel did, either.

It was a fun idea for a category, though.

I just kept dwelling on how I could not recall any of the "Word(s) of the Year," and then got hung up on trying to recall "Y2K" (1999).
It seems that's another list for Jeopardy! contestants to study?

My only TSs were poodle and blue.

But WTH was up with Mattea's FJ wager? As soon as her total was shown to equal Michael's pre-FJ wager, the expression on her face looked like: Oh crap! I should have wagered a dollar more!
Right?
But I am glad she made it to 5 wins.

I'm glad Mattea won, despite not landing on any of the DDs and not wagering wisely in FJ.

I was a few minutes late tuning in, so I had to catch up on the earliest clues via the archive at the commercial break.  Did they put up "recorded on 2/8/22" for the Kyiv clue?

I didn't have a great first round like I typically do, but not terrible; I missed three in symphony, two in moms, and one in purple.

In DJ, I was utter rubbish in literature, missing all but one.  I also missed three in presidential names (but I did know the George Kennedy TS), but other than that I only missed one, the punch bowl TS.  Of course, who knows how I'd have done overall if they hadn't left so many clues uncovered.

FJ was an instaget.  I'm surprised only one contestant got it.  (I don't think the other two are under any illusions "bov" was a thing last year, they just shortened bovis/bovine to three letters in order to write something down.  Personally, in that case, I'd have just left it blank.)

It's all that came to mind for me, but I knew it was wrong. My problem (I think) is that I don't think of "vax" as an actual word - so it never came to mind, which meant vaccine never came to mind despite the date.

The numbers threw me. If it had been done a little differently, I might have gotten them. I rarely associate the number with the president.

It wasn't a good game for me. My mind is on other things, so it was hard to focus. The other things are good things - but not good for my game.

Clearly both contestants got stuck on "bovine" being from the Latin for cow.  I got vax because I know the Spanish for cow is vaca, which let me to vaccine and then to idiot anti-vaxxers.

It was hard as hell for people like me, who stink at presidential categories and couldn't tell who was what number beyond the first few.  I think I got one right on first guess and only because I know that Bill Monroe practically invented Bluegrass.  I got two others (George Kennedy and Richard E. Grant) only after a contestant guessed the wrong thing first.  I tried my damnedest to make Wynton and Marsalis the names of presidents.
