Can we go back to the "disaster movie of the week" episodes? Because what I just watched was painfully sad. I'm actually feeling down right now.

Going from the last minute of the OG right into this hour was a gut punch. Gina Torres killed it.

That entire hour sucked, but Gina Torres killed it with displaying Tommy's grief throughout the episode. Even though we only had a handful of episodes with Tommy and Charles, his death still packed a punch. The flashbacks, and all of this season, has shown how well Tommy/Charles were together. They really showcased the entirety of their relationship in these thirteen episodes, so it DID make me cry to see how torn up Tommy was and how she dealt with her grief. Retreating into First Responder mode and being unable to tell her daughters about their father's death? Hard to watch. I'm surprised we didn't get a scene at the end where Tommy sits her kids down to tell them, but I guess, even with the small steps she took in processing her grief, she still wasn't ready to take that next step.

Greg Grunberg did an amazing job as George. I didn't love how his son woke up from his coma instantly, though. I guess the show really wanted a hopeful moment, but realistically, his son wouldn't have woken up and I think that would have packed more of a punch.

I also was fine if the rest of the firehouse didn't show up at the end. I get why they had them all show up, but I really was fine with them not inserting that one minute scene at the end.

Judd, Grace, and Owen's reactions to learning about Charles' death worked very well. Poor Grace and Judd had to pretend that everything was ok, and Owen literally had to talk Tommy down from making a huge mistake.

Still, a very strong episode. This season has done better than last season. Actually, correction: the entirety of the second HALF of this second season has been extremely strong. The first half of this season had its weak episodes, but the last few episodes have really gotten me to enjoy the show more than I ever have.

Man, I knew last week Charles was dead but a small part of me kept hoping for a miracle. Sadly, none was to be found for Tommy but at least Greg Grunberg's character got one. I've loved him since his Felicity/Alias days so it was nice to see him on my TV screen again. And I thought he did a wonderful job.

Grace breaking down at the end with Judd really got me in the feels, too.

Man, oh man.  I honestly did not expect them to kill off Charles.  I mean, I kinda did but I didn't expect it in like the first 2 minutes.

I could tell Tommy was basically in shock the entire episode. Everything she did was from a place of ... suspension, I guess.  You could tell that her mind was simply not ready to really process  the reality of Charles' death right right away. Not denial exactly,  but a numb sort of practicality that was protecting her from really feeling it.  Gina Torres really sold it and as odd as her actions seemed, I completely understood what was happening.

I think in some way as a viewer I was kinda still in shock and for me it wasn't until Grace and Judd realized what had happened and them listening to the call, that I finally felt the punch.  It made me so sad in that moment.  Well done show!

On the one hand, I do resent the show for having Owen be on site (conveniently) and being the Big Damn Hero ($.05 for anyone who gets the reference) but given all the players, he was the logical choice.  Grace and Judd had to be at home and watching the girls.   And Grace being the one to put the pieces together via the 911 call was also a nice bit of story logic.

Anyway, looks we are back to big disasters again for the finale.  Even with this, I really hope the show's season ends on a hopeful note.

The acting by Gina Torres was amazing. I honestly wasn’t that invested in her or her family before but I sobbed during this entire episode. Finding a loved one like that is one of by biggest fears.

Oh, that was just heartbreaking. Gina Torres is just so good.

Not a fan of the convenient miraculous recovery for Coma Guy, but I did like that the SWAT team actually took Greg Grunberg's character into custody rather than just let bygones be bygones. And that he was beaming the whole way and couldn't care less. Someone's getting a nice Father's Day card in jail.

What exactly did the plug-pulling ex-wife blame him for, anyway? Did he lie to Tommy about the circumstances of the seizures that put their kid in the ICU, or is she just one of those people who think their ex is at fault for everything bad that happens in life?

Why show WHY?????????????

This was a very good episode except for ... ugh!! WHY?????!!!!

I wondered if the guy's son would come out of the coma and he did and that was finally the breaking point for Tommie. GT was excellent. I like that they didn't have any sound, only Tommie's silent anguish. I wonder if they will show her telling the twins.

Man this was so sad especially given Tommie reaching out and helping the dad in the mist of her own tragedy.

One nitpick. Why did RL have to be shoehorned in LOL

I was pleasantly surprised hearing the twins calling Grace and Judd Ms/Mr (can't stand hearing kids calling adults by their first names) but I found it odd as well. These are their godparents. My godkids call me Godmama and that is what I was expecting from the twins.

Especially with the families being so close. I would have expected those girls would have been calling them Auntie Grace and Uncle Judd since they could speak.

There is no way I could compartmentalize that much

That young man with seizures has 9 lives like a cat. I guess no one should write him off again, but some specialist, or a bunch of them, need to take a deeper look at how he manages to survive

So now we even have a Chekhovian 12-hour coma survival story followed by a 2-week coma wake up.
I guess it was supposed to delineate for both Tommy and the viewers the difference between someone who you know/believe is dying and a sudden death?
Or?
Maybe a bit of a PSA on visiting your elderly relatives while you can.
No doubt some involved with writing the episode lost someone during the pandemic whom they were not able to say goodbye to --as did I --as did many --as often happens in 9-1-1 situations, pandemic or not.

You mean Tommy? I think she was almost (but not quite) in a dissociative state due to it being so sudden and unexpected, as well as being the biggest thing that could happen to her. It was a kind of denial.

What a powerful hour of drama.

I had stated earlier how even though I really like Liv Tyler, I think the show got new and great energy when Gina Torres came on as Tommy.  I just love GT as an actress.  It doesn't hurt that she is stunning as well.  Also I'm a fan of Rob Lowe and adding Gina to the cast is a good fit with him.

Judd and Grace are the anchor of the show for me.  I love Grace's compassion.  The way the show wove Tommy and Charles into the Grace/Judd story was wonderful.  Charles was a good, solid, supportive husband and father.  He will be missed. I found myself relating to Tommy's situation in a what if kind of way.  Her training certainly helped her cope with what happened, in the mechanics of what had to be done.  But it did seem that she had to disassociate herself from the grief for a bit just to get through it the process. When she gave in to the grief at the end was heartbreaking.

It was great to see Sean(Greg Grunberg), I always think of him by his Felicity name. His behavior was shocking but a parent's love knows no bounds.  His ex-wife was a nasty witch, regardless of what may have happened previously.

The 911 shows packed a punch last night.

Yes, sorry, I did mean her about compartmentalizing. I think I got that from a producer or Gina Torres interview about those scenes.

Regarding Grace asking her colleague to pull up the 911 call and play it, is that allowed without a supervisor signoff? That just seemed unrealistic

This was a hard episode to get through, especially after the way 911 ended. Just a depressing 2 hours of TV overall. Yes, Gina Torres killed it (and it's hard to imagine Liv Tyler pulling off something like this) but it was just such a downer. I don't need every TV show to be sunshine and roses but I don't expect this show to depress me.

I'll give the writers and actors their due, they certainly killed it. It's ironic how Chicago Fire started off as the more serious show and 911 started off as campy and goofy and now the 911 shows are nailing the drama while Chicago Fire is just limping along and phoning it in.

Still. Not fun to watch. I'll appreciate a return to rescue scenes and action.

Between this and 911, I need to eat some ice and cream and watch some cat videos, this has just been a relentlessly sad two hours of television. I was still holding out hope that Charles could be alright, but sadly that was not meant to be. Huge kudos to all of the actors for really making me get invested in Charles and the relationship between him and Tommy, even without knowing him for very long I already miss his presence on the show. He and Tommy were so sweet and he was such a strong and caring husband and father, I am so not ready for the girls to find out. Gina Torres was amazing, it was so hard to watch her compartmentalizing so hard that she could only come at Charles's death from her perspective as a paramedic, not as his wife, until the very end where she finally started breaking down. Its like it took seeing the kid waking up from his coma to finally make all of this real. As long as no one else knows about it, its not real yet, but now there's no hiding from it, the shock finally wore off.

It was a good call to have so much focus on Grace and Judd, not only because they are friends with Tommy and Charles and will be hit by this really hard, but because they're the heart and soul of the show. When Grace cries, I cry. Them trying to pretend everything was alright with the girls as they pieces together what happened was so painful, but they were still trying so hard to look after the girls and be there for Tommy.

Always great to see Greg Grunberg and he was really great as a desperate father pushed towards the edge. I have no idea what went down between him and his ex wife, but it was apparently pretty nasty considering she was threatening to call the cops on him for just showing up at the ICU. Normally taking the son off of life support after so long probably would be for the best, but considering he did end up coming back, I think I know what parents he's going to be spending Thanksgiving with this year.

I'm just drained.

I actually know someone who was in a coma and her friends were visiting her and saying good-bye and encouraging her to let go, and then she did come back and she was fucking furious that they had been "trying to push me out the door" and never forgave them. So... while this was a tv trope, it's also a thing that does sometimes happen. That made it hard for me to take sides for or against the writing, and so I decided to go with the acting, which I thought was excellent. GT did a great job with both the shock and the grief. And Grace and Judd were wonderful, as always. I know Greg Grunberg only from his role on Heroes, but I liked him on the bench, and after his arrest. I do wonder what happened with his ex, though. It must have been really bad if he wasn't even supposed to be allowed to visit his son in the ICU.

The first part of this episode reminded me of the the episode "The Body" (S05E16) of BTVS. It had the same feeling of time slowing down. It left an unforgettable impression on me at the time. One of the writers for this episode, was a writer on several of Joss Whedon's series and I am sure this was a sort of homage to that episode.

Not to mention she was just coming off the explosion at the fire station and then the fire at TK and Carlos'. All of this insanity was supposed to occur within one or two days.

That's EXACTLY what I thought of. Especially with the lack of music after Tommy discovered the body. That's one of the things that made "The Body" so affecting. Absolutely no background music. I just realized that Tim Minear and Gina Torres worked together on Angel so I think you are right. Sigh. What a shame Joss Whedon turned out to be a sex pest.

Tim was also one of the people in charge of Firefly, so he's seen just how versatile and awesome Gina can be on multiple shows. And how powerfully she can portray grief over losing a husband if you include the movie. As an aside, I'm so glad he now works in partnership with Ryan Murphy and gets to enjoy mainstream success, not just the genre/cult variety.

I hope we get to see more of Charles in flashback scenes next season. Derek Webster has been great in the role.

Grunberg's character didn't strike me as an abusive/molest-y parent, which would be the ONLY valid excuse for one parent to shriek about having police cart the other away from their child's deathbed. Since she was the only person he actually pointed the fake gun at, my assumption is that it was over their marriage being toxic instead and the son being "hers." If so, hope one of the show's exploding buildings/vehicles/swimming pools got her on her way home from the hospital.

I know people are saying that the son will likely be mad at the mom (and she did seem like a real piece of work), but if I'm ever in a coma/vegetative state, though, I've told all of my family and friends to pull the plug as soon as the doctors advise it. I don't believe this life is all there is, I believe we go on to something better, although I don't have a specific conception of what that is. I don't want them spending long, torturous days in limbo at my bedside. Let me move on, and then they can grieve and move on, as well!

This hour of TV felt like going through the wringer. I cried ugly tears through most of it. Gina Torres is officially the Queen of All Things, and I bow down to her. She is off-the-charts amazing!

I think it's a tough call, and if the kid is mad at his mom it isn't totally rational, unless it comes after a lifetime of her being fast to give up on him or they have an otherwise terrible relationship. If you go off medical advice, being someone who beats the odds is just not what they prepare you to expect. Mom did looke SUPER happy in the scene with the kid after he revives. The actress made that come across really sincere.

I don't know what I'd want my friends to do if I was comatose. I really think it depends on the individual situation, and a combination of hard data, statistical probabilities, and a really deep intuition about the person and situation in question. I have one friend whose intuition I'd trust more than many other people who I'm actually closer to, just because she's one of those people whose intuition tends to be really amazing, and I think she'd be able to cut through the emotional and statistical stuff and just tune in to me. But that's not something everyone can do, even if they truly do love you quite sincerely.

I always think of Greg Grunberg as “the guy who played some regular character on Heroes.”
Since he’s the reason the son is alive, I’m assuming charges of violating the restraining order will be dropped, and they will charge him with some minor offense instead of kidnapping—-

I quit the 1st season about 4 episodes in because Owen (and TK) annoyed me immensely.  Love Sierra McClain as Grace, but she and Judd weren't enough to keep me watching.  Gina Torres was the reason I tuned into season 2. She carried this episode in such an amazing way.  The ambient silence in her scenes was so much more powerful than overpowering music.

I just hope Charles was killed because the actor got cast in something else, and not because the showrunners/Rob want to eventually pair Owen and Tommy. Please no.  PLEASE.

I sort of took it as she refused to talk about (or even kind of accept that it happened) until she knew why. That is why she called in the specific pathologist that she knew would give her answers. Because really in a situation like this if you tell someone your partner is dead their first question will be what happened. Vega being a medical professional would probably feel like she has to have those answers.

Also as a big time Alias fan the only thing that kept this episode from being a total downer was thinking how Agent Weiss needed to watch out because Anna Espinoza was right there.

Sometimes the remnants of those make it to Dallas/Fort Worth and beyond. Great fun with you have a rain shower followed by dust storm. Mud coated everything and it dries like concrete, and it's not the same color as the local mud. Not sure if those make it down to Austin, but either way, they show up in weather forecasts so it wouldn't really be a surprise. Unless they're coming up with yet another wacky way to do something.

Owen being on site made a sort of sense, but I really wanted Judd to be involved in talking Tommy down. Loved seeing him and Grace with the twins, but after Owen called Judd, I expected him to head over to the hospital. Especially after hearing the 911 call. It would have packed even more of a punch if he tried to talk her down, and then comforted her when she finally broke down. They've known each other for over a decade, while Tommy's known Owen for less than a year.

Maybe it's a Southern thing? I'm Southern and while I don't even know anyone who has godparents, it's relatively common for kids to call certain adults Ms/Mr and their first name. I work in a library, and the kids and most of the adults (some of whom are formerly "library kids" themselves) call me by my first name this way.

I'm going to join those who didn't care for coma guy waking up. I know that can happen, but the timing was just too convenient, even for this show. The theme with Tommy was letting go. She was trying to get the father to accept that his son was gone, just like her husband, and even had a line about him going to see the son would "make it real". Turning her focus to someone else was yet another way to delay accepting the reality of her husband's death. I've known people who react in a similar way to what Tommy did -- keep going seemingly unaffected, until it finally hits.

I liked seeing Greg Grunberg. He always brings it in the acting department, though Gina Torres far outshone everyone on that part. I just hope this isn't a way to write her out and bring Liv Tyler back. I think Michelle would be much improved no longer dragging around her missing sister storyline, but I like Torres/Tommy much more.

Cher and others had to legally change their names to get folks to drop the honorifics and last name.
My mom had us calling her brother and my aunt by their first names back in the 1950s and 60s when we were little kids. I don't know why. Maybe she was trying to be hip. Maybe she was dissing her little brother. But I always felt a little awkward about it after I became old enough to realize other kids used "Uncle Soandso" and "Aunt Soandso."
But then in my 40s I worked in a high school library where the kids were required to call me "Mrs. --- or Ms. ---" when I would have preferred just my first name. Like Cher. 😉
One of the good things about taking a job in a college library was getting to go by my first name. Some professors chose to go by their first names too; others liked "Dr. D."
So. For our show, I hope the kids use first names because that's what Grace and Judd preferred.
Confession: I didn't even notice what they called them.

I've been seeing a lot more people calling older folk aunt(ie) or uncle, and people near their age cousin in recent years. Mr/Ms First Name seems to be falling out of favor in more casual situations.

Would've gotten very confusing calling adults by their last names where I live. There are some sprawling family trees around here, so it would be easy to lose track of who you're referring to.

I'm going to go against the grain and say that I found Tommy's reaction to her husband's death completely unrealistic and contrived.  I will add that it is to Torres' credit that she sold it as good as she did.  Otherwise, the whole storyline would have been unwatchable.
