Episode Discussion II: The TFGH

Culture Check: How can we discuss a character's or actor's appearance without objectifying them? How can we express likes or dislikes and still respect an individual's humanity or be mindful that a character represents a person someone else might relate to or identify with?

The giant cute baby is her grandson.

Given all that Esme has done, why doesn't anyone request a DNA test?  Why believe her, other than the math adds up for date of birth?

If this show can use realistic information suck as New York law allowing a baby to be with its mother for the first 18 months, then the idiot writers should also know that if someone signs an NDA to cover a crime, then that NDA is illegal. Brookie can talk about what Linc did.

This FAKAKTA show!

they did. maxie brought that up when BLQ brought it up

They are believing Nikolas who said he was the father as Esme had amnesia and wouldn’t know. Now he could have demanded/gotten a dna test when he spotted a pregnant Esme but he wanted to play princess in the tower.

By the way, they could demand a dna test but she doesn’t have to agree to it and the presumed father would have to go to court to do so. It is not in Esme’s best interest to confirm Nikolas is the dad when he is not around because the Spencer right now has no legal ties to Ace.

Thanks to Trina’s dumb plan, Esme can leave town with Ace if she wants. She is not a prisoner. She is not on parole. She is not on probation. She has not been told that she cannot leave town.

However $80 is only going to get her and Ace a train ride out of Port Charles. Laura is offering a place for them to stay but she has not talked to Esme about finding a job so she can earn some income while she also figures child care for Ace. Which is why I was disappointed that Esme and Ace didn’t go live at Kelly’s where she could have worked as well.

There is no follow up regarding Esme’s trust fund or her adopted siblings, both these things would help support Esme becoming independent.

The show wants her to be dependent on Laura’s kindness and Spencer to have giant baby rabies.

While I think Genie and Avery have great acting chemistry together, I was fine if the show allowed Esme to be struggling as she tries to find her footing for Ace and herself. As of yet, the only thing Esme asked was to stay with her son at Laura’s. She has not asked for any kind of financial support. And as I said earlier the $80 that Laura spontaneously gave her, is not much.

Yes, but the conversation with Chase, she told him she couldn’t say what Linc did because of the NDA. She really is stupid and so is the show.

Speaking of stupid, why is Trina worried that Spencer is "living with" Esme? He's told her enough times how much he hates Esme.

Re attempts into regular TV, Michael Easton starred in the series Total Recall 2070 where Cynthia Weston (Faith Roscoe) played his wife.

Lenz seems to have a decent career these days between being one of the better female leads in Hallmark moves and the ill-fated Suits spin-off Pearson.

I like that idea. Unfortunately the show wouldn't do it due to race and gender.

With that said, if Spencer needs to dial it back then so does Laura because so far her methods haven't proven any better as Esme was about to take her money, & her new grandson and skip town.

Maybe it was a trust test to see if Laura could trust Esme as a preliminary to building a real relationship with her.

This is what the show has done to me. Or rather, the idiot “writers” have done: I’m fast forwarding all scenes except for the ones with Laura and the adorable baby that is Ace. And Robert.

Show has RUINED Anna for me.

Considering that Esmé filmed Cameron and MiniSheBeast having sex, I am NOT on board with Cameron and Esmé getting together/involved whatever.

Taking this off my DVR queue as I head for India for two weeks starting Friday. Will be in NY for work Tuesday-Thursday so won’t be able to watch.

BARGE, ready my rooms!

I'm so jealous-a trip to India is on my bucket list!

I know that baby is giant, but isn't he just 1 month old (if that), and I know that the US has terrible maternity leave, but isn't it a bit soon to be expecting Esme to be out working? Also did Ryan have money ??  Would she be in line for some inheritance.  Did she really have a trust fund set up for her, maybe she could access that now. So much they aren't addressing. Even the amnesia, shouldn't she be getting a formal medical diagnosis?

On a scale of 1 to 10 how cute is Ace?  12?

I don't know what she'd do for money, but if I were Esme I'd head for the hills.  They don't seem to mention the poisoning of Oz Haggerty very much, but there's a 2 year statute of limitations in NY for revenge porn. Since that all went down before Esme got pregnant, it's been a year.

Did I miss something? Didn't Spenser tell Sonny that Dex and Joss were an item? How come he hasn't kiledl him yet, Joss?

And, I don't really care if Elizabeth keeps her job or not, lots of hospital employees have done worse.  But, I don't know how she kept a straight face when the committe guy told her that she did what she did because she was afraid Nikolas would kill Esme and the baby.

IMO if the actors are going to be leaving at the end of their contracts, the show needs to be able to do recasts without a lot of complaining.  The writing is bad enough but they have excuses for it when they have to keep changing course.  If they just recast Cam right now, they could continue the story.

The audience resistance to it ought to be resisted.  It's not the old days, when a paying acting job was so rare that the actor hung onto it as long as it lasted.  With all the extra channels and shows, it seems like quitting an acting job to concentrate on school is a thing. For soaps, that's no good, unless the audience learns to live with recasts.

exactly. I remember when they recasted Eden Riegel's Bianca on AMC, and so many people were mad, and the writers were basically like look - we respected ER's wishes when she wanted to leave the show and do other projects, and happy when she came back for visits but the show needs Bianca and ER can't come back so we need to recast. [so basically deal with it].

IMO, super happy what WL wants to go to school/pursue music whatever, but the show needs Cam right now, I personally would have recasted him. (i'm really not adverse to recasting anyone as long as they are talented and pick up where the original left off) -

I was really hoping that when Sonny asked to talk to Joss outside that he was going to tell her he knew about Dex as a way of trying to tell her that she needed to be a little more alert than usual.

I can only hope that he's saving the information until a time it will have maximum impact on Joss. But I'm afraid it's more likely that somewhere down the road the writers will have him saying that if he'd known before (whatever event) that he'd have done something about it.

I would think that the pay at Kelly's wouldn't cover child care let alone rent.   Could she sue Nik in absentia for child support?  I can't see former Esme waiting tables.

Someone has to be looking over Nik's business dealing while he's not around. It would probably take a DNA test but Ace should be able to get support.

I know it's different in the US than in other countries where there is 12 - 18 months paid maternity leave but it doesn't make sense to me to put Ace in childcare where the worker would be taking care of multiple babies rather than being with Esme, his mother, taking care of him herself. Especially given how rich the Cassadines are.

Susan Sarandon, who got her start on the soap A World Apart, often said that soap operas are the best way for young actors to learn their craft because there is so much dialogue to learn and so little time to rehearse.

Same, same  so same. I have to wonder if the residuals come into play here  - like having characters from a different era on the show = you have to pay the to have them? I think i read that but i am not sure so don't quote me.

Like i know the Serena actress flat out retired from acting = so recast her. [and I was not watching but did Scotty react to Lucy's "death?" I bet SERENA would have?]. Lucky should be here. and yeah, it is really sad about SE, but I don't think it would have been disrespectful if they recasted Piph. (I figure if they did it with Edward Quatermaine the first, they could do it here)

And Jax is needed. I am sorry. he would be ripping Carly a new one about Joss (and rightly so) and it's needed. he wouldn't really cotton to the whole "But Daddy, I LOVE HIM"  song that she's singing.

like the show is so busy creating new characters they are shunting the old ones (and i get it again, a part of it is respect to the actor and what they did.... but still). a lot of the stories now require these characters and usualy when they do decide to include them it's when you get the whole dumb "well, sorry you were not important to me for X years i was gone."  nonsense

Yeah, that was supposed to be this monumental bombshell, but all we got was a perplexed/constipated Sonny face, then… nothing. These writers leave so many shoes waiting to drop, it’s like there’s a Payless franchise on the ceiling.

I know there is a preference with each new regime to create their own characters, but it would really have made a lot of sense to have TJ be Tommy Hardy, Jr. Failing that, Portia could have been a Ward. Nina could have been a Barrington, Baldwin, or even a Quartermaine (although the latter would complicate Michael's relationships and children with both her daughters). It was incredibly short-sighted to create all-new families for both.

Speaking of short-sightedness, if the goal of Willow and Esme's concurrent pregnancies was not a baby swap, why did they have BOTH of them give birth during February Sweeps? Esme's childbirth was linked to the Sweeps reveal of the Hook killer, so that had to be timed together, but why not drag out Willow's pregnancy so she might give birth during the 60th anniversary week to a Quartermaine heir? (Ideally named Alan Quartermaine III, Alana for a girl.) They should also time Sprina's first time to occur during the week (and again, it would have been even more meaningful if Trina was a Ward through either one of her parents - so we would witness the union of a Quartermaine and Cassadine).

The longer they drag out Sprina's first time, the bigger a disappointment it will inevitably turn into. I still think they should have had Trina lose her virginity to Rory. The thing about Spencer - and the "bad boys" in general - is that they strike me as being primarily focused on their own pleasure, not their girlfriend's. They don't put in the effort to woo the girl beforehand, much less once they have her in their bed. In Spencer's case it would be exacerbated by the fact that the only girl he's ever been with, Esme, would not have needed wooing since it was her father-given mission to seduce him into stalking Ava and destroying her marriage to his dad.

If Jax has to return - and I agree that his absence, while not really felt yet, will be glaring if Joss is imperiled by her relationship with Dex - it will have to be a recast. It's not like they have a limited talent pool either; there are plenty of Aussie actors in Hollywood, and if all else fails, get someone who can put on the accent.

I don't expect the Magic Milo strippers to be polished; the guys are supposed to be amateurs, not professionals. It would be weirder if they all performed like it was what they were trained in and did for a living. And the nature of charity performances like this is for the performers to put themselves out there and embarrass themselves a little in order to raise money for a good cause. I don't believe the women on (and off) the show should be shamed for enjoying the performance. God knows Epiphany always did and I liked that a larger, Black woman did not have to hide her desires. I only wish they had done more with her and Milo's romance which was almost entirely offscreen.

As for this year's Magic Milo, I mainly hope they can rope in Chase and TJ. Drew and Cody don't quite cut it. And speaking of wooing, maybe Spencer can perform his own private Magic Milo routine for Trina.

Because then I would throw things at my teeveee. Michael gives zero poops about the Q's  that way so it would drive me batty insane if they named their unneeded baby Alan(a).(but that was a big missed opportunity I do agree)

Interesting.  The show definitely needs a pick-me-up.  Maybe that would come from having the 'right' characters on screen, where the stories would virtually write themselves.  Definitely Jax (the only tolerable iteration of Carly, in my book) who needs to become nosy about the relationship Joss has with Dex, and spar once again with Sonny; Lucky, who might bring something for Laura to do and provide Liz with the real memory storyline she's been craving; and Lulu, whose friendship with Maxi was organic enough to be believable, and who could also provide Laura (and Lucky) with some opportunities. All of them would provide plenty of material for Kevin. Lulu would need a new love interest (not Cody, please), because Dante and Sam have become zzzzzzzz material.   The current cast of characters---not the actors, mind you, but the characters---have too little potential to offer to the writers.

All this anticipation (?) for their love scene is a bit — much?  Creepy?  It’s all their nut — I mean, fans can talk about.  To that I say, why?  What are you expecting to see?  What are you hoping for?  That’s just weird to me.

You can say that for any soap couple.  After Carly's number 1 concubine, Drew, became so overcome with lust that he threw everything off of her kitchen counter onto the floor, I saw an entire thread on another board talking about how HOT their "lovemaking' was and how we need more Crew lovemaking scenes now!  lol  I mean, I am not really into any of the sex scenes and think they are almost always embarrassing, but some say that is what "love in the afternoon" means.

I am a Sprina fan and want them to move into their actual couple era soon, but I am not into sex scenes on soaps.   I just shrug.

Thank you for finding that!  While catching up on several episodes last night, Mr. Mbluecpa mis-diagnosed Gregory with Boring Character Disease.  So assuming the writers don’t retcon this, I surely hope they don’t drag the reveal out until May sweeps.  Alexis is one of only three characters Gregory is tied to, and they’ve been repeating the same conversation every time they’re onscreen.

I hate you show for giving  a Cameron/Esme scenes now that he's leaving. That could have been a good relationship.

Finally someone told Esme about Franco!

"And all the performers, they get a plus one!"  It's not like Joss can't afford to buy a ticket for a plus one. The writers are so desperate to make Joss and Dex into a relationship we're rooting for.

"I'm really sorry that I hurt Cam and I wouldn't blame you if you're relieved he's getting far away from me." Stay narcissistic, Joss. Frankly I blame you for that cheap small bag of pretzels (cost what? $2?) as a present to Cameron given how much money you have. It should have been something like a sound system for his dorm room.

Valentin and Anna conversation was boring even for this show. And Anna is incredibly stupid to call Eileen and potentially blow her cover.

Wasn't the "plan" to drop charges against Esme so that hopefully they will able to charge her later when memories come back sort of a "plan" to get her to slip up and show that she is indeed faking it? Did Cam just blow the "plan"?

Cam told Esme that Franco had been in a similar situation as hers, broke the law and everyone hated him but he stuck with it and redeemed himself, made a new life and Cameron became very fond of him. Esme wanted to speak to Franco. Cameron told her that he was dead but that he (Cameron) would tell her about Franco before he went away.

The next scene with them is Cameron walking into the party holding that baby seat followed by Esme holding the baby. Shocked and angry faces especially Spencer.

Did I fast-forward through a scene that explained the letter that was given to Esme at the facility?  TIA.

Or is it like the letter that Luke gave to Laura during his last appearance (y'all will correct me if those two weren't the ones) or one-of-liz's kids - Aiden - who was heading towards a hobby of playing with fires.

Can you imagine what a blast that would have been to watch. I am sure that the company men put their foot down for the arson story line but they have failed to notice their feet nearly buried with decades worth of spent cartridges continually breezing through their product these past two decades.

I missed a chunk of the show due to Biden. But Joss can f*ck right off telling Cam's mother how tough the breakup was on her. There really isn't a situation Joss can't make about her.

I missed some of the Cam/Esme dialogue because of a news report, but I'll probably go back and find it on Hulu, because I really liked their scenes.  Cam didn't pull any punches with letting her off the hook, but he also didn't treat her like she was irredeemable.  I liked the Franco talk (and totally forgot that was her half-brother).

Thanks Marshall for at least staying in the other room until after Spencer and Trina could kiss.

Yeah, I appreciated that Franco is Esme's half-brother and she and Cam have him in common. (I guess this means she is technically his step-aunt in addition to being the mother of his adoptive cousin.)

Well, at least stripping is one thing Dex might be good at because he's been an epic fail at being the mole in Sonny's "organization". I'm not a fan of Dex, or his relationship with Joss, (unless he's revealed to be AJ's son) but he does look good with his shirt off.

I think the show has contributed to it by dragging out how long it took for Sprina to even kiss, and how many "near-misses" they've had. In that sense it does feel very old school where romances took months, even years, to develop into a full-fledged relationship, but modern fans aren't quite as patient (in all aspects of storytelling) and it does stick out like discriminatory treatment when all the other couples on the show don't face the same long wait or obstacles.

I sort of looked at it as Cam's giving Esme fair warning, that this was her opportunity to change for the better or else face the consequences.  I also stand by the belief that she truly does have amnesia but that doesn't mean she's lost her intelligence, she realizes she has few allies and I hope she truly starts trusting Laura and Kevin because if you have the mayor on your side, you're golden.

I sort of appreciate that the show's going for a slow burn with Trina and Spencer.  They're getting to know each other, the good and the bad and then you look at Joss and Dex--he's boring and bland but Joss thinks he's hot and that's good enough for her.  This is not the beginning of a great romance.
