I don't have Netflix, either.  My cable bill is huge as it is, because Spectrum is charging us for internet, land line phone, and TV with HBO.  They keep sending me emails wanting us to subscribe to their cell phone plans, too, but I'm not switching those.

What does Netflix charge per month?  

I'm rewatching Big Love on demand.  I know Kootie and the BrownClowns got storylines from that show.  Kootie could never be as handsome as Bill Paxton (RIP) was.  The wives in Big Love were all pretty too.  The Sister Skanks?  Not so much!  😜

Wow, thank you - I didn't know about this!  I keep going back and forth about buying Discovery Plus for a month to watch the Hillsong documentary.

I believe I pay $15 a month for Netflix - that's for two people to watch on two different screens.  For one person I think it's still $10 a month.

Happy Birthday, @Gramto6! Same day as my first nephew who is also my godson and the first grandchild.  He's 23 and about to start a job with an aerospace co. in Ohio. He finished his Masters in engineering in Dec. I'm just a little proud of him. He's  a very sweet young man. 

It was also the birthday of a very dear friend who was like a spiritual mom to me. She died last summer at the age of 96. We met when she was 84 and enjoying many activities with old and younger friends. Her one true love died when she was just 68 and she never dated or remarried. She just enjoyed her mostly female friends. She was slowing down but still enjoying reading and the crummiest basic cable shows (she was addicted to shopping channels) and activities at her assisted living place. She had her own small apartment until the end - never needed the nursing section. I'm very sad that she developed a foot infection due to neuropathy and while being treated in the hospital got infected with MRSA.  However I take comfort in the fact that she is not here to know that I now have a difficult to manage chronic condition.  We spoke often (she lived her last 6 years in Florida to be near her son and DIL and this news would have made her very sad.

I am reading g Under the Banner of Heaven now.  I don't like to criticise someone else's religion but this book was an eye opener.  I had no idea about the violent history of Mormonism or the fact that some of it continues to this day among the outlier sects.

I watched Secret Lives of Women--the polygamy episode today.  Two of the Darger wives were featured.  Flora Jessop, the original rescuer of plyg women and children was also featured.  If you are interested, it is on Roku.

It was released in 2008 so 2 years before Sister Wives.  I looked for the Browns, but nothing.

It's on ID network - I Went Undercover. S1E3, The Sleepover. It's so sad.

Not having seen the documentary, I don't know if this is systemic or incidental to one congregation. 

I think if you scratch the surface of almost any religion, or for that matter, any organization that involves kids, you will find these monsters that take advantage of vulnerable children.

I bingewatched the “keep sweet” episodes last night. I could fill pages with commenting on it, but I guess you’ll have to watch and judge it yourself. It’s worth it.

To sort of stay within the Sister Wives topic: I noticed that several familiar names were named during the series. Right now, only Jessop and Darger come to mind but there were a few more. It does make me wonder how deep family members with those names are immersed within the FLDS or affiliate churches? I suddenly had visions of Robyn running around in Laura Ingalls dresses, but I don’t think her husband (a Jessop) was that religious? And what about Joe Darger? Darger is a known name within the FLDS. I don’t particularly like Joe Darger but he seems to treat his wives decently and with respect. And from the bits we saw from them, they didn’t look (ultra) conservative? (I know he is not FLDS but just wondering if he has similar beliefs)

I also can’t help but feeling that Kody would fit in well with that bunch of FLDS nutters. If only because they feel that the man is King and the wives don’t matter. They just have to agree with every decision and well… keep sweet. Kody would like that very much…

I finished this late Fri, and i enjoyed it. I think it was well done, and it was nice to see new faces. 

Now..add to my wish list..a follow up or Part 2 on how FLDS is staying together, or falling apart since Jeffs has been in prison. 

On an episode of Escaping Polygamy, they mentioned that because of a narrow gene pool, the Kingston group was reaching out to FLDS for brides.

So, in addition to him allegedly being a lazy and lousy husband and dad, he committed the huge sin of not wanting more than one wife? How many reasons did she need to divorce him?

How many times has this "health coach" used not being able to find her sneakers (they were in the back of her SUV the entire time) or filthy yoga mat as reasons to not exercise for months?  and how many times has she set up a "challenge" that starts in 3 or 4 weeks, giving her plenty of time to eat all her favourite foods and bulk up so she can "loose" more weight during the challenge?

I went out of town couple weeks ago for my niece's wedding. Flights, long layovers, sitting out the drinking parties once I got there. I knew what to expect so I loaded my Kindle before I left. 

Sarah C. Allred wrote Give Me Back My Children. She is the first wife to Richard Allred (FLDS). Rachel Jeffs was the 3rd wife of Rich. Sara refers to her as Mara throughout the book. This was interesting to me because I had only read Rachel's book and seen her TV appearances. I would love to hear wives 2 & 4 accounts of married life with The Prophet's daughter. Sarah also describes the culture before, during and after the downfall of Uncle Warren.

I finished another one. Balancing Bountiful by Mary Jayne Blackmore. Winston is her father. Its pretty good. She shares her journey - growing up in FLDS, marriage, then growing away from the teachings. She got a teaching degree, and worked with her dad to get FLDS schools accredited.

She still lives in Bountiful near her huge family, and seems to have made peace with her life.

I finished a book by Rebecca Kimbel. Born in Polygamy: A True Crime Autobiography. 

I have seen this lady on YT, but I did not know her full sister is Irene Spencer. Their mother was Rulon Allred's sister, Olive. Her father was Morris Kunz, who was jailed for polygamy in the 40's raid. 

Rebecca tells of her mother's struggles as a plural wife, and with the schism in the FLDS. She described events and a side of Rulon Allred that I had not read of  before. She did not hold back. 

She also tells her amd Irene's heartbreaking stories of trying to live the Principle, suffer the abuse, provide for their own children.. It's a good read, with decent descriptions of the flow of fundamental LDS after the Manifesto. 

Oh. And. Ervil wanted her for a wife. Kinda stalked her, but didn't succeed.

You can get the book for free from the Internet Archive as well. I think a lot of the books are donations from libraries and what not. 
I myself have a collection of rare horse magazines from the 1940s-1980s that I’m planning on donating to the Archives. After they scan them, they’ll keep the hard copies in their archive.

I discovered a podcast called "Deliver Us From Ervil," about Ervil LeBaron and his brothers, and wives, and lots of murders.  Lots of familiar names, too.  Pretty horrific but fascinating and well-told.

Reviving this thread. I got a notice about a new documentary by a woman named Ondi Timoner. Her name sounded familiar - I knew I'd seen one of her other docs some time ago - so I looked her up. This was the doc: https://www.interloperfilms.com/join-us-shop. It's about families who've escaped a cult. The screening was quite awhile ago now and while I don't remember much about the details, I do remember being impressed by it, and by the talk she gave afterward. I'll probably watch it again soon.

Also, there is a chapter in a book by journalist Sarah Davidson that's about a polygamist family circa 1970. One of the wives is an attorney. All the wives say how great it is, they work together etc and they seem happy but the undercurrent is as sad as you'd expect. The book is called "Real Property." I don't have it handy but it's an anthology and all of the essays are excellent. I'm pretty sure this essay and the above documentary are two of the things that made me interested in Sister Wives when it first came out. In the first few episodes, though, I remember thinking that the only interesting thing about the OG3 was that they'd all chosen to marry the same man. They all seemed so bland!

ABC News Studios has a Mormon polygamy-related documentary series premiering on Hulu, tomorrow (January 4, 2023).

Daughters of the Cult is a five-part miniseries that centers on the life of Ervil Morrell LeBaron, the polygamist Mormon cult leader who started the cult, the Church of the First Born Lamb of God.

If the name Ervil LeBaron sounds familiar, that's because this man, sometimes referred to as "Mormon Manson," ordered the 1977 hit on Christine Brown's grandfather, Rulon C. Allred, then the prophet of the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB, the Browns' religious group).

Ervil's 13th wife, Rena Chynoweth, was acquitted of the murder in court, but confessed to it her 1990 memoir, The Blood Covenant.

Christine Brown's mother, Ruthann or "Annie," is a LeBaron (yes, it's the same LeBarons).

A&E has a new docu-series, Secrets of Polygamy. I found it when I was looking for something else and stumbled upon this article in The Salt Lake Tribune. The series (or perhaps the season) contains ten one-hour episodes.

The first of those episodes concentrates on more recent developments in the FLDS church (the Warren Jeffs group), and one Samuel Bateman and several of his followers.

Here's what the US DOJ has to say about Bateman (CONTENT WARNING: child sexual abuse; CSAM; and all manner of awfulness):

I've recently read about Christine's late uncle, Vance Allred (died in 2021), who left the AUB after discovering that some sexual abuse had been covered up and/or at least not effectively addressed. Here is a Reddit post about the interview that Vance did with John Dehlin at Mormon Stories. 

According to Vance, his uncle Owen — Christine Brown's great-uncle/step-grandfather (Annie's mother married him after she left Floren LeBaron, which is how Annie is step-sisters with Kristyn Decker) — knew about the abuse, was distressed about it, but didn't know how to address it.

Vance got fed up and exited. Like Christine's father, Rex, Vance was the son of Rulon C. Allred (who was murdered on Ervil LeBaron's orders — Ervil was the brother of Floren — are you dizzy yet). 

More recently, the guy who was the AUB leader from 2014 to 2021, the late Lynn Thompson [who is some sort of (distant?) relation, I think, to Aspyn's husband Mitch], was accused by his daughter Rosemary Williams (of My Five Wives fame) of molesting her when she was young.

I don't know which AUB stories this new Secrets of Polygamy series plans to cover, but I figured it was worth a mention.

Vance got fed up and exited. Like Christine's father, Rex, Vance was the son of Rulon C. Allred (who was murdered on Ervil LeBaron's orders — Ervil was the brother of Floren — are you dizzy yet). 

More recently, the guy who was the AUB leader from 2014 to 2021, the late Lynn Thompson [who is some sort of (distant?) relation, I think, to Aspyn's husband Mitch], was accused by his daughter Rosemary Williams (of My Five Wives fame) of molesting her when she was young.

I don't know which AUB stories this new Secrets of Polygamy series plans to cover, but I figured it was worth a mention.

I watched this and am sucked in.  Interesting in the same way a serial killer is.  Just astounded this stuff is going on.
