I would think post-9/11 New York airports especially would have a low tolerance for hijinx.  I was wondering about him dropping his bags so far away and running at her.  I suppose the camera crew provides some cover.

SO MANY 90 Day-ers drop their luggage and run, and I've always had the same thought- "Never leave your luggage unattended."  But, I've come up with the same conclusion...someone in production must have their eyes on it.  Mursel completely left his behind!

I certainly hope so but in the wake of Epstein, I don't think we can just accept that she was a (ostensibly) consenting adult when she was first trafficked for sex. I mean, she was only 20 when she met Michael and her passports already had "lots" of stamps in it from her jet-setting ways. So that couldn't have just happened over night.

I also don't think that asking about working as a prostitute is on the standard ICE interview sheet (I've done some asylum work) but is probably something they include when there are suspicions.

But no matter when it started, I think piling on a super young, super poor girl for turning to sex work to support herself is kind of gross. Why is it always the prostitute who gets blamed and abused in these situations when really the focus should be on the Johns who exploited her.

I cannot disagree with any of this. I can only hope that part of this is to keep creepy international child sex traffickers and sex slave traders from bringing that into the United States.  Sadly the victim gets caught in the crossfire.

This makes sense.  A lot of people fudge on job applications/interviews and no one cares, but if you're let go and an employer doesn't want to pay unemployment or doesn't want to face a wrongful termination suit they may go through a job application with a fine tooth comb to see if they can let you go, or make the argument that they would have let a person go because they had lied.

While Tania has been the worst, I feel like a LOT of people would be having a run in with airport security if there hadn't been a camera crew there with them.

I would not be surprised if Juliana was trafficked for sex as a minor, and felt she had to continue in performing sex work to support herself and her family. Of course I hope that’s NOT true (for her own sake) but I wouldn’t be surprised. If that was the case and she met Michael, I 100% understand why she would want to marry him. He’s older but does have some disposable income, (even if it’s less than he’s telling her) is offering to bring her to the USA, and he’s not a total troll (physically).

He’s already got two kids (a boy and girl) so he might not even expect her to have a baby/raise kids, just keep him company and look pretty. Life as Michael’s trophy wife, looks a hell of a lot better than life as a “yacht girl” which has a very limited shelf life and you’re exposed to god knows who and what- it’s dangerous. I am not getting any vibes that Michael would abuse or hurt her.

I freakin' loved that Ms. Everything Needs To Be Perfect, Tania, couldn't be bothered to spell "sugar" correctly on her banner.

If Michael really wants to convince me that he has hundreds of thousands of dollars to blow on Juliana, he's gonna have to buy some new Old Navy button-downs that actually fit.  Not a single one has so far.

He probably can't afford a new shirt, since his "kindred spirit" maxed out his credit cards.

The most animated Mursel was when he was dancing to Turkish music in the car.  I laughed out loud because it was like watching a musical when he started dancing.  I don't know what he expected when he landed in America but it definitely wasn't flat Nebraska.

That was so much fun!  I immediately thought that would make a good strategy in case of negative/awkward moments.  Anytime Mursel gets upset or grumpy, put on the Turkish music and let him get down!

Is the backdating 10 years on the question of sex work just a standard boilerplate ICE question?

It just kinda sounds like a standard question on a form that someone has to ask.  I imagine the decade mark is just an arbitrary line to say that anything earlier than 10 years may show you're still involved in sex work and anything more remote than the 10 year window may tend to show you're truly out of the game.

I did a canvass of my K-1 friends..."10 years" seems to be the standard question. My husband said they asked him as well and that was 12 years ago so it has been around for a while.

Julianna, if they are asking you those kind of questions then they have a reason for doing so.   Now they have to provide a police report.  Why is there a police report?  He emphatically said she's NOT a prostitute.  That much money, these guys at yacht parties probably consider these girls/models as just part of the party.  I'm guessing an escort is no big deal because they're arm candy and we've worked hard to make this money, we deserve pretty things.  A prostitute is probably seen as something you get off the corner and don't talk about.  An escort is like "Pretty Woman" and she is taken out and shown off like a date.  Sorry, I'm rambling.

Like the old joke goes, they're just haggling over the price.

Juliana probably has lots of stamps because she's very good at philately.

She seems kinda skinny and flat to be a swimsuit model.  What exactly does she model?

She isn't a swimwear model. She's clearly going for runway, editorial, and commercial. Her measurements are bigger than Kaia Gerber. Bella Hadid is 34-24-34. Juliana is 32-23.5-35.5. She's actually a little big in the hips.

See,  I was thinking that Juliana needs braces because she’s got gaps between her teeth.

Loads of models have gaps: Lauren Hutton, Slick Woods, Lindsay Wixson, Natalia Siodmiak and Lara Stone. Kate Moss has a very prominent snaggle tooth.

13 hours ago, Frozendiva said:

Michael - you met Juliana on a yacht somewhere in the Mediterranean. Not a museum or city market. She just wasn't randomly pulled from the usual tourists to be on that yacht, at that party. She was 'working' there. She probably has been trafficked or has worked as an escort. She was there to entertain the guests and if lucky, get some extra cash for some attention. She has issues with getting a tourist visa. A legit model would have a work visa from her employer. She would also have a portfolio, a list of modelling jobs she has held (runways walked, etc., editorial photos, etc.), probably pay slips.

Juliana does have a portfolio and legit jobs.

The reality is that lots of legit models and actresses work the yacht and party circuit. It used to be easier to not have sex with the guys. I knew American models in the mid 90s to early aughts who did this and they were repped by big agencies with names people would recognize. I don't want to say that it wasn't sleazy because it always kind of was, but it was definitely less sleazy. If you've seen that Sex and the City episode with Amalita, Gilles, and the $1000, the scene seemed to be a lot more like that back in the day.

One friend told me that her agent told her to go to the parties, maybe find a guy would could help her out as my friend's career was slowing down or who might marry her. That friend went to a couple of parties and thought "Why am I hanging with these jerks,? I'm getting a degree in economics. I'll be making jerk money soon enough." She was a lot like Martha Stewart, who modeled in her teens and twenties.

I had a friend from grad school who met her ex-husband that way. He was smart, effusive, and not overtly awful like some of the other guys. He wined and dined her until they got married and he turned into an abusive controlling prick. He started beating her, but never her face. She was with him for 3 years before had enough money and an exit plan. She'd changed her name twice and was all over the country. She ran for 5 years. She thought she'd lost him and settled down somewhere and gone to college. He found her. She got a huge tattoo to celebrate. He found her again. He beat her until he saw her tattoo which he thought "ruined" her. He walked away and left her alone.

There's a great piece that was written by an actress who likely worked on a Ryan Murphy show. She worked one yacht party. She didn't sleep with anyone, but she truly hated the experience.

Unless the male guests and owners of those yachts also own fashion houses or magazines, run fancy car shows,  or are themselves designers* (See: Grace Kelly and Oleg Cassini, back in the day), there seems to me to be not much reason for bikini-clad young women to be in attendance as "models." Moreover, there is nobody on board for the rich men to "impress," for the "arm candy" isn't being taken anywhere but below deck.

*Michael is none of the above.

I highly doubt that TLC producers cannot count as well as we can, and thus I also highly doubt that Juliana is a victim of Child Sex Trafficking.

Because seriously? That would put an end to this entire television franchise, right quick.

Sure, there is a sub-set of sex workers who really enjoy their work and do it willingly. But there are many more who are using it as a way to escape grinding poverty, feed a drug habit, or for other depressing reasons.

But, in this particular case, we're talking about Juliana potentially being trafficked as at least a teenager if not a pre-teen. Children cannot consent to sex work and even if they could, no 15-year-old should be handed around to dirty old men. It isn't the same thing at all.

I looked up some of the questions and some of the reasons a person might be blocked  - eg crime(s) of moral turpitude.  But a common question it is to list all the countries you have entered in the last 10 years.  Miss "has a lot of stamps on her passport" could easily make a mistake and maybe did in regards the failed tourist applications.

I'm not buying the consulate is asking about her sex life at age 10 and 12 other than there being a standard question or two about that generally, about her employment, terrorism etc in the last 10 years or whatever.  Like others have pointed out (perhaps couples' thread) everyone is asked such questions.

From what I recall on the show, they asked if she was a prostitute when she and Michael met, and what's wrong with asking?  The situation requires it, even if the question and answer are a bit silly if unprovable.

From what I read, these answers can be used later to deport if she was found to be lying.

Yeah, so I did some googling and it seems like the only boiler plate questions that apply for the Fiancee interviews are: "Do you work" or "Have you have been convicted of a crime". I really do think that the question specifically about prostitution must be based on at least some suspicion on ICE's part. I don't think it's just a standard part of all the interviews.

That being said, I can believe that the ten year mark is just a boiler plate amount of time. But regardless of the ICE questions, I still think that if she really did work as "more" than a model, then the odds that Juliana was trafficked as a teenager are really high. Which seems like a crappy reason to deny someone a visa.

Someone in another post said they think TLC would never have allowed them on the show if they believed she had been trafficked as a child but I don't believe that for a minute. Because she and Michael aren't going to budge from the position that she never did that kind of work while viewers will be split in their opinions and will delight in the "scandal" - it's exactly the kind of BS that TLC producers live for.

Child sex trafficking isn't a "scandal"; it is a crime. It includes by definition child-rape. I do not believe that the TLC PTB would wittingly, for ratings, exploit a victim.

What they would do is give us a cliffhanger with a dicey topic that will amount to nothing but "Whew!" all around.

Her visa hasn't been denied. But, if it was denied it wouldn't be because of past sex trafficking but because the agents in question believe Michael is a pimp trafficking Juliana into the US by way of the K1 visa (at least that's my opinion).

So, I created this account to comment quite a long time ago (and had completely forgotten my username) but I HAD to get back on because something in this episode made me so ANGRY! Juliana is only 22 or 23 years old right now. When she met Michael she was only twenty. That means that ten years ago, she was either 12 or 13.

If ICE is right* and she HAS been "working as a prostitute" (which - who really knows - perhaps those modelling gigs fell somewhere in the gray zone) for the past ten years, then she was neither "working" (in so much as she would have been incapable of giving consent even if she could) - I think the word they are looking for is "exploited" - and she also was not a "prostitute" - she was a victim of child sex trafficking.

  • *Note: a lot of what I said in this is somewhat predicated on the idea that ICE was right. I'm not at all convinced of that; she very well could have just been working as a model at parties for the rich and famous, which I don't think is unusual. But back to regularly scheduled programming.

If it is truly ICE's contention that girls (and boys of course) who were trafficked for sex cannot be granted a visa of any kind to get into this country because they may be planning to participate in "nefarious activities" in the USA is horrifyingly inhumane. Basically, if trafficked girls do finally find a way out to protect themselves/get out of the life, it is absolutely shameful that our government (and lets face it, a decent percentage of the population) protects them as potential dangers that must be excluded.

I know some people on here have been surprised that Juliana seems to actually have feelings for Michael despite the large age difference. I think that there are two "obvious" reasons that Juliana is so fond of Michael:

  • (a) he has more money than the other old guys who have brought over much younger fiancees in other seasons [I'm looking at you Anna's David who, remarkably, have some of the best chemistry on all of Pillow Talk]. Even guys who brought women over who were about their age, they had so frequently lied about how much money they have that it was absurd. Now, I have no idea how much money Michael has but it is very clear that he is significantly more wealth than most, if not all, of the men who used this ploy (what's up Jorge, Coltee, and, David again, and I know I'm just barely scraping the surface). So of course she appreciates he has money. If she *were* trafficked as a child, that kind of fiscal security (as well as emotional security) would be a heady thing.
  • (b) Secondly, it has not escaped my notice that Michael is somewhat more handsome than most or all of the other older dudes with young fiancees too.

But I'd also point out, if Juliana was trafficked as a child, it wouldn't really be a surprise that she would be looking for a man who she believed could protect her. She might even be doing it sub-consciously. And I don't think there is really anything wrong with that  (even though I spring-fall relationships do freak me out) because we all have types. And he seems like he really cares about her and sees her as something than a sex doll come to life, though I guess we'll see as the season progresses.

TL;DR If ICE is correct, Juliana was exploited by child sex trafficking and excluding her from the country because of it seems deeply wrong. Also, it kind of helps explain what she sees in Michael.

Seems like you are right.  In a way I feel sorry for her.  She’s stuck in a poor place where she will never get out of.  Michael is her protector and a way out, and I think she loves him for that reason.  She looks sad and hopeless, but with her record, it seems like it will not happen.  What a way for a young girl to live.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting Michael  is trafficking Juliana- I don’t think he is. We are just commenting that she may have been trafficked in the past and given how young she is likely before the age of 18.

TLC exploits victims of crimes for ratings routinely. How many young women have been have been sexually abused/assulated etc and their story is used for ratings on ”My600lbsLife”, “Unexpected”, “My Teen is Pregnant and so am I“etc etc? Juliana may or may not want to talk directly about her past (out of privacy or concerns for her family) but TLC isn’t going to not film a great storyline for 90 Day fiancé because a participant was a victim of a sex crime as a child or in the more recent past. Especially if the victim is willing to talk about it on camera.

It is hard to tell.  Juliana might like Michael well enough.  I doubt she is madly in love with him, but she might see him as a fairly nice sugar daddy.

I saw that, "Your a poor Brazilian when I'm not here..." part again on PT, and it didn't seem quite as bad, as when I first saw it.   He said that she had lost weight and she said it was because he wasn't there.  It was a cringy joke, but I think he meant she ate like a poor Brazilian when he wasn't their and like a rich American when he was.

Obviously she doesn't live like a poor Brazilian when he is away, because she has his credit card and bank card.

Tania -  those rose petals and the gas station flowers at the airport were just shockingly obnoxious as well as tasteless. Then she brings her friends back with them to the hotel room? Then the whole extravaganza in Times Square. Poor guy was understandably overwhelmed and not in a good way.

It was the obnoxious friend who started in on the poor worker who was just trying to clean up that mess - Tania should have realized that she was in the wrong.  I also noticed they simply walked away from the mess - might explain why the shed is a sty and her hotel room looked semi-trashed.

Anna and Murcel are a complete disaster waiting to happen, and Momma ain't being a big help with her inquisition about 'stoning'. I feel for her boys.

But come on, she SAID please when she asked him not to stone her daughter.  If that isn't being polite I don't know what is😀.

I'd be booking myself into the nearest hotel, and taking a bubble bath, and make arrangements to go back to the DR if I had to endure Bryson whiny, yelling, and bouncing around on a bed that you are expected to share with him, and clueless 8 hour fiancé after having a long  flight. No bueno.

Not to get too graphic here, but does he really expect her to ONLY have sex in the living room?  (PLEASE tell me he doesn't think it's OK to have it in the same room where his kid is sleeping!)

I am thinking that Michael and Juliana might have played up her supposed offense at the prostitution question, for dramatic purposes.   It is a standard question on the visa application along with questions about terrorism, plots to overthrow the government, drug trafficking, etc.

YES, I'm wondering if they still ask the questions designed to find out if you are guilty of Nazi war crimes - something that isn't really relevant any more.  They are not trying to shame someone for being exploited or used (if she had been trafficked at a young age, it would have been rape - not prostitution).  They are asking a bunch of questions so they can more easily deport you if you do something "wrong" - they can say you lied on your application.  If they wanted to be nit-picky they can say you lied about not being guilty of a crime (even if you were never charged or convicted) if they can prove you are guilty of a minor traffic violation.  In most cases they won't use this to deport you but they want it in their back pocket.

I found it rather funny when Michael was talking about consulting his lawyer to determine if they could ask her that question.  I still remember the counselor at the university my husband went to telling us that when we went to apply for his change of status (he was already here, we just got married and didn't do the K1 thing) the interviewer could ask us ANYTHING they wanted.  Basically it was, "Those rights you think you have?  You don't."

So if Juliana is only 20 and they asked her if she had Ben a prostitute for the last ten years that would have made her 10 years old when she first became a whore. I guess they start early in Brazil

A ten-year-old is a child. Characterizing one as a "whore" is repulsive.

I believe Juliana was asked if she had been a prostitute in the last ten years, not for the last ten years.  It's a standard visa question.

Right, that is a standard question.   I believe she was 22 when this was filmed.  But if she was 30 or 40, they would ask the same 10 year question.

They are not trying to find out if she was a child prostitute.  They want to know if she has engaged in prostitution at any time in the past 10 years.  She happens to be young enough that 10 years would take her back to 12 years old, but that is not the intent of the question.

Didn't spicy skank Pao go to a yacht club party? during her short career as a Plumbing Company calendar model.

I remember Janelle Pierzina (my favorite all time Big Brother contestant) talking about parties she had gone to, private planes, etc.

Life as Michael’s trophy wife, looks a hell of a lot better than life as a “yacht girl” which has a very limited shelf life and you’re exposed to god knows who and what- it’s dangerous. I am not getting any vibes that Michael would abuse or hurt her.

I'm curious to see if he's going to make her sign a prenup like Mark had Nikki sign one in season 2.

That comment about "You are a poor Columbian alone but a rich American with me" really rubbed me the wrong way.

I think that rubbed the whole forum the wrong way. Only someone who likes that fact that he has the upper hand would say something like that.

I suppose that they could really technically ask you anything.  And just LOL @ Michael crying about due process.  Everyone has due process, but it's not going to look the same for a person from another country seeking entry to the United States.

I think his lawyer must have set him straight because his answers seemed a lot less committal after he said he was going to talk to his attorney.
