Another American (non-Hispanic) here. Foreign language training was required in public schools in the state where I grew up. I'm bilingual today because I stuck with it from middle school through high school through college and beyond. I worked hard, studied abroad to develop my skills, and I still find ways to use my language skills in everyday life. There are definitely a lot of people who struggle and/or don't stick with it, but I think being bilingual is becoming progressively more common--particularly among college-educated young people, many of whom are now required to take language classes or study abroad in degree programs. Not an American (by birth or upbringing) over here. I myself came from another country (in Europe) and when I came to the US, I did not learn to speak English at a fluent level for maybe 4-5 years. That is because I live in an area with a huge number of immigrants from the same country as me and if I want to go to the bank with tellers who speak my native tongue, I can choose to do so. If I need ankle surgery, I can easily find a podiatrist speaking my native language within 10 mins. The U.S. is a salad bowl not a melting pot and it is beautiful that immigrants are able to hold into their language and culture. 

The exact same holds true for English speakers who live abroad- many send their kids to English schools and immerse themselves amongst other English speakers. 

Where I come from English was not taught as a second language and I had to break my teeth to learn it as an adult. Did not meet an English speaker til I was 20. I was taught a different second language. I am not American by birth. Now I speak the language almost as well as an American.

So my point is, I am not implying something specifically about people of Hispanic origin, and that the phenomenon of not learning your new country's language can be found anywhere from any group. For example, in Saudi Arabia, there are children who have a Saudi father and non-Saudi mother, who are sent to English speaking schools and still in their preteens can barely speak Arabic. That is actually quite sad.

I'm just quoting a couple of the more objectionable statements that have been made on this thread. There's a very clear and ugly suggestion in these posts, and it doesn't have anything to do with how hard it is to learn another language. I won't belabor the point (sorry, mods), but I hope others might consider why statements like this--especially when made without any supporting evidence--are potentially hurtful to people.

I like Fernanda.  I get why she wasn't thrilled with the drawers in the drawer, the bathroom break to blondie up on drunk Jon and Jon not telling his "jealous" mother about his marriage plans when family is important to her, and I'm not 19. I thought she handled herself well with the stuffy friends who had to get their immigrant digs in.  I think he's kinda creepy, in a used car salesman kind of way, as he is often trying to talk her into his way of thinking.  I don't see him so wise and all knowing.  

It's maddening watching the guests here feel that they have to prove themselves to these weird people, with little help from the ones who brought them here.

I had some sympathy for her till her little performance in the gym. She loved every moment of attention she was getting ( and Jon loved it too, everyone knowing he was banging a hot chick). 

She needs to grow up. And he needs to find someone closer to his own age, but first figure out his mommy issues.

Whenever I've been in clubs like that I've danced with other people who weren't my BF in a pretty sexy manner, and my boyfriend did the same.  Neither of us freaked out about it.  It's a tight dance floor, you're drinking, and you just get into the dancing, it really doesn't mean anything at all.  She is super jealous, and would drive me crazy, she wouldn't even let him talk so that he could explain.  It's a really good thing she wasn't drinking, can you imagine how bad that would have been?  But, like he said himself, how can he expect her to act mature, when she's not mature.  That's what I mean about him being very patient with her.  I do think it will get old pretty quickly though.  Unlike most of the people on here, I like Jon.

As he told he too, if the cops get involved because she can’t control her temper, she’s screwed with the visa. 

One thing I noticed with Fernanda is she keeps saying that if her mom doesn’t approve of her marrying Jon, she won’t, but then even after expressing her concerns, mom gives her okay. Same with her dad, and he’s all tough and macho, but says it’s up to her. And she has a list of things Jonathan does or doesn’t do that might or might not break the engagement. Now she’s putting it on his mom, if she doesn’t approve, they won’t get married. I seems that she wants someone, mom, dad or anyone to stop her and non has.

After the club debacle when they were in the parking lot and she was in the car, he puts his hand on the roof of the car and he is clearly wearing a wedding ring. So were they already married at that time...?

I don’t think so.  On their first episode he stated he wears a wedding ring to make Fernanda feel better since they weren’t able to be together before she came on her visa.

I just saw the video and it goes from Jon at home and then cuts to Fernanda sitting in what looks like a car saying something (there was no sound on the video I saw) and then jumps back home and shows "the" part of the video being talked about. Investigate what? She posted it, she admitted to posting it, and she's over 18. There's no there there. If he's embarrassed that his fiancee posted a video of her sucking his dick on the internet, well, he should be, but that's between them. There's nothing for law enforcement to do. Maybe if it was revenge porn and she posted it without his consent or knowledge, which is possible - but that would mean that law enforcement deals with Fernanda, not the people who saw it.
