Here’s some alright news: ABC’s Tuesday comedy block isn’t splitting up anytime soon. The Alphabet Network has given full-season orders to freshman sitcom The Kids Are Alright, as well as sophomore series Splitting Up Together, TVLine has learned. We hear that nine additional episodes of Kids have been ordered, along with five more episodes of Splitting.

This is from TV Line "Matt's Inside Line".  Putting it in spoiler tag just in case but it's just a hint about how an upcoming episode (possibly the season finale?) will highlight a popular 70's TV show.  Seems like it's more than just the Cleary's will be watching said popular show on their TV.... but if so trying to figure out how they're going to work that into the plot in a realistic way.  Still I was a fan of said show at the time and it definitely peaks my interest!

Spoiler

I’m loving The Kids Are Alright. Any hints about what’s coming up? — Barbara
Before the ’70s-set ABC comedy wraps its freshman season, it’s going to be staging a crossover of a sort with a popular series from the era in which it takes place. Your hints about which one are as follows:
1) The program in question was also on ABC.
2) Its teenage-dream star caused many a viewer to gasp, “I think I love you.”
3) Said teenage dream was David Cassidy. In other words — that’s right — the Cleary clan is mixing it up with The Partridge Family.

Remember when they replaced the youngest son? Maybe Timmy was one of those auditioning (a bit old but that won't stop Timmy 😄) His red hair fits right in with the family.

It would be fucking hilarious (and not out of typical Hollywood casting) for a 12-year old Timmy to try and play an 7 or 8 year old. It'd be like that episode of the Brady Bunch where 12-year old Cindy tries to act like Shirley Temple and no one comments on how bizarre it is to see a 12-year old trying to act 7.

The show being set in Los Angeles adds a lot of possibilities.

Blergh. Just yesterday I found out that Mark Hamill's a big fan and that he was promoting the show on twitter. He wanted the show to get to 1977 so the boys would get into Star Wars.

I just found this side-by-side of the real vs. TV family.

I love that Timmy is wearing a suit and has the biggest smile for the camera. Eddie, Joey, and Lawrence did not put on ties. And check out the necklace on the mom!

Nice tweet from Mark Hamill to Sam Straley/Lawrence:

"As terrible as it seems, everything happens for a reason. I did The Texas Wheelers-a sitcom cancelled after 4 of 13 episodes aired. I was devastated. If the show had been renewed I wouldn't have been available for Star Wars. This is a new beginning for someone as talented as you."

I hope Netflix or Hulu picks it up.

Is that possible?  Should we start a campaign?

For awhile now, I've been wondering if the people who really loved this show were all my age.  In other words, out of the primo demographic.

Unlikely on either front. It’s an ABC/Disney show and they own a majority of Hulu currently because of the Fox deal so it would have been secured before the announcement of cancellation and if the studio wasn’t willing to make the numbers work for their own network/streaming it’s not going to be viable for Netflix.

According to this article, ABC included the following The Kids Are Alright episodes in their Emmy mailer:

Quote

“The Kids Are Alright”
#101 “Pilot”
#113 “Vietnam”
#115 “Valentine’s Day”

I think they should have substituted Valentine's Day with Timmy's New Hobby.  Then again... maybe they were afraid the show they stupidly cancelled would win an Emmy(s) if they included that episode.

Good point.  That episode could become just as iconic as Seinfeld's "The Contest."  References to "pageantry" and "women's coats."

Why would a network even submit a show it cancelled for an Emmy? If it wins, don't they look like morons for cancelling it?

Having said that, I thought "Vietnam" was the best episode of the show. Mike and Lawrence and Eddie just killed it.

It’s the studio not the network that submit shows in this case the studio happens to be ABC Studios but they are separate entities under the umbrella company. Some producers and also have it written into the shows contract that it has to be submitted.

So apparently the head honchos cancelled TKAA because, on top of it not having steady enough ratings, it didn't have a strong enough fanbase. Now how the hell they can argue that a mediocre show like Single Parents has more potential to grow then a quality, highly rated show like kids, I don't know. It sounds like they are trying to do a little damage control after Tim Doyle, perhaps rightly, implied that it was all a popularity contest at ABC.

Yeah, their excuses for cancelling TKAA are a bunch of BS.  Honestly, I think it's incredibly suspicious that they renewed both of Elizabeth Meriwether's two horrible shows - Single Parents & Bless This Mess - which both had well-deserved poor reviews and bad ratings (which will only get worse this fall.)  It totally makes me wonder what Liz Meriwether has on the ABC execs. 😉  Something's not right there.

The Kids Are Alright just needed more exposure, because almost everyone who actually watched an episode or two became fans.  That cannot be said for Liz Meriwether's horrible shows that were renewed instead of TKAA.

Under the article in the comments an anonymous author wrote that the show didn't get renewed because Tim didn't think he should have to grovel and sell the show to the suits to get renewed, so because he didn't feed their huge egos by begging they didn't reward him with renewing the show and found bogus excuses to cancel it.  Very sad how egotistical these people are.

I'm amazed that the article had 350 comments!  Shows you that a lot of people still care.  Again, very sad.

I don't know about Liz Meriwether, but I know JJ Philbin, daughter of Regis, is also attached to Single Parents in a co-creator/executive producer role. So maybe the got a renewal through name recognition.

I feel for Tim. He's been in the business along time and paid his dues, and the quality of his work should've accounted for way more then ass kissing. Even though it sadly looks like the show won't be picked up anytime soon elsewhere, hopefully Tim will be able to produce more quality content somewhere else, like Netflix.

I think Meriwether's Bless This Mess was even less deserving of a renewal over TKAA.  Its ratings were tanking hard during its abbreviated season.

I agree with you about Tim.... the quality of his work speaks for itself.

Probably a bunch of ageist bigotry by ABC also.

I could not agree more, especially with your last sentence.

It took awhile for Pop TV to announce its pickup of One Day at a Time.  I  keep hoping that there's still hope some streaming service or network will pick up TKAA.  The fact that TKAA is still being talked about in media circles makes me wonder why Karey Burke feels the need to defend her decision by scapegoating the audience.

I agree with you Phebemarie, and I've had a strong feeling that we have not seen the last of The Kids Are Alright.  It is way too awesome to just disappear.  Someone will be smart enough to snatch it up. {{fingers crossed}}

I think she's being made to defend it by article writers that are responding to the continuing fan outrage, which instead of dying down seems to be getting worse judging from the comments under the articles discussing her lame defense of the cancellation, which were only written a few days ago.

In this article, she is quoted saying that it was cancelled because it didn't look like there was a strong enough fan base "at the time".  The qualifier "at the time" tells me that perhaps now it looks different to her after seeing all the fan reaction.

She said she was looking at multi-platform viewing and social media sentiment for evidence of that fan base, but if the show's audience skewed older, that could be one reason it wasn't as evident there.

The comments under that article are full of people pointing out the other shows on the network that were renewed with lower ratings, like "Bless this Mess", and call her justification "pure BS".

One can only hope that the fan reaction might help it get picked up by another network or streaming service.

The cast and crew of the show is no longer under contract and ABC Studios who owns the show isn’t shopping it. Relaunching it at another place isn’t going to happen.

Exactly. I have taken to watching an awful lot of Netflix lately as network TV is a real disappointment.
