Isn't she a bit young for braces? I know all kids are different, but I thought it was better to wait until they're between 10-14. I thought if you did it too young, their mouth might change too much and the results may not last? I may be speaking out of my ass here.

I just learned about this recently because I knew someone with a young child getting them.  They do interventional braces early now for those that need it based on how their teeth are growing in, lack of space, etc.  It is to help them not to have to be in braces so long later on, as they will most likely need them later too.  I guess it helps the process later by correcting certain situations early.

That was a little odd. Ok very odd. Sophia was “singing”about having a daddy the way kids sing about having a puppy.

To be fair, having a dad *is* kind of like having a puppy in Sophia's world. The Daddy Derek story has taken a weirdo fairytale turn thanks to the Abrahams; plus, the idea of a dad, *HER* dad, might be something Sophia isn't sure how to feel about yet. There's so much maudlin pressure for her to be sad in a very prescriptive way that it may have choked out some of her ability to have her own emotions about it.

My mom died out of nowhere when I was Sophia's age; a very different situation than hers, but regardless, thankfully I was given room to grieve as I needed to. 25 years later, i am able to be very matter-of-fact about it, which people sometimes find jarring. But to me it's something i have had to learn to live with, both as the fact of her death and what it means for me going forward.

so sorry you went thru that.

I remember a scene when Sophia was in a limo saying she wanted to die to see DD and it was creepy AF.

Thanks.

Let me tell you, kids ARE creepy AF. Some of the shit that went through my head was scary; worse was what other kids said. I bet classmates have told Sophia at least one or two seriously effed up things about having a dead parent. And it doesn't help that Deb went on and on to Soph about she'd see Derek in heaven without really talking that concept through with her and/or giving her time to figure out what SHE believes. Kid logic is... childish. For Sophia, she's parsed it out that if she wants to go hang with her dad, she's gotta be dead, too. Fuuuuuuucked up.

I thought you had to wait until all adult teeth were in or out. I had to wait until I was 13 and they still had to pull out my back molars.

You do for regular brace, but I think she had (for lack of a better term) pre-brace braces. My niece is 10 and has them. They're trying to correct the teeth that are there now so the teeth that are coming in will have room and may avoid year's of braces, retainers and headgear down the line. Or it's a scam orthodontists pull to get paid twice for braces.

According to my grandson’s dentist, orthodontic consults for children who may need braces are done at 7 years old. If they require them at that age, it is considered “phase one”, with more to follow.

I’m glad Farrah has taken the steps. Besides it appearing she needed braces, she could have some sort of jaw issue which hopefully with “early” attention will be  corrected.

I hope I didn't make a bad parenting decision with Butterbaby. His dentist recommended we consult an orthodontist when he was 8. I thought that was early since his teeth were still coming in. Now that he's 10, his adult teeth have all settled in and thank the Lord, his teeth are perfectly straight. Hope it stays that way.

But to stay on topic, I am not throwing any shade at farrah at all for taking steps to ensure Mowgli's oral health. As opposed to someone like Jenelle who can't be bothered with Endtable's helmet, or Kaiser's eye, ear, nose, throat, othamologist, dentist, or fucking pair of shoes.

Re: the death talk... probably adds to the confusion when her grandma is yelling about wishing she were dead in the middle if a pedicure. Sheesh, that family.

Thanks for the explanation. I'd never heard of these pre-braces. My oldest is 9 and I'm sure he'll need braces, but the dentist hasn't told me it's time to see an ortho yet.

I definitely wouldn't either. It's just I'd never heard of them starting that young. And, with Farrah, my mind always goes to the superficial before the necessary. Remember, this is the girl that was plucking a 2-year-old's eyebrows!

OMG @ghoulina you are so right. I had meant to mention the eyebrows in my post! I was gonna say, braces are the most sensible thing she has done to that child! And yet, Farrah's neck mole lives to see another day.

I got mine at 8. Didn't get them off until 14. I think they're starting them earlier now.

I had two of my kids in braces. My youngest had braces put on when he was 10 years old. He had 7 teeth removed at once before the orthodontics were put on six months later.  He had them done in two phases. He had the orthodontics removed and then was on a break for six months before the second phase started. He had a couple of issues he was dealing with that necessitated orthodontic intervention at an early age. Here is one article about early orthodontics: http://rochester.kidsoutandabout.com/content/why-are-kids-braces-so-young-nowadays

I doubt it's the lack of a dad that Sophia was teased about. Plenty of kids only have one parent or live with a relative for a number of reasons. If Sophia was getting picked on it's probably because A) Her mother is a nutter, B) So is her grandmother, C) They air all their crazy for all the world to see or D) Sophia is freakin' weird. And I say that as a former weird kid and slight weird adult.

I think it is very weird/difficult for a child to lose a parent before they are old enough to really have a solid idea of who the parent is/remember the parent. 'Daddy Derek' died before Sophia was even born, so it's pretty much impossible for her to have a "normal" understanding of him.

My mom died when I was 14 (and totally "knew" and remembered her) and the way I feel about her/her death isn't necessarily "normal" (according to other people). People (ranging from family members to strangers) sometimes put their expectations of how I should feel about my mom/her death on me, but I've come to a point where that doesn't really matter to me and I just go with how I organically feel.

All of that to say, Sophia singing a song about wanting her daddy may seem weird, but, to me, it's fine as her expression of how she's feeling and where she is with processing his death and what that means to her. Adults who have had fully realized relationships with their dads often struggle with processing their dads' deaths and have many moments of feeling like singing "I want my daddy" (or whatever), whether they literally do so or not.

Sophia acts the way she acts because it pleases her mother. Look at Farrah's face in that ^ pic. It delights Farrah when Sophia goes against Deb, so Sophia makes a big show of disrespecting her grandmother to make her mother happy. Farrah was even giddy when Sophia decided she didn't want to sit next to Deb and moved to sit next to Farrah and that's not the first time I recall something like that happening. It reminds me of being a kid and arguing with my siblings over who our new puppy liked best as we all tried to call him over to us. Farrah treats her daughter like a chihuahua... a living breathing accessory she drags around with her to look cute and to feed her ego by giving her attention. It's all very disturbing. I don't think there's one sane person in that family and it's unfortunate because Sophia is such a strange and unlikeable child and that's only because she doesn't have a single adult in her life showing her how to behave appropriately. It doesn't surprise me that Sophia was being picked on in school, although I doubt it was because her dad is dead, my guess is it was because she's just an insufferable child and the other kids won't put up with her bullshit.

Re: Farrah's immense disdain for David.

I'll have to figure out which episode it was and re-watch it, but I thought Farrah, when expressing to Debra her feelings about David, said something like this:  "...and I just don't think he should be allowed to have the house..."  I didn't hear exactly what she said and I may have it all wrong, but the way it was phrased made me think that one of Farrah's reasons for disliking David so intensely has to do with money -- that once they are married David would be a beneficiary and may inherit some of Debra's assets if anything should happen to Debra.

I know that David insinuated himself into the ongoing Debra/Farrah battle and that he said things that angered Farrah.  Still, Farrah's reaction has been over the top.  Then again, there's always the real possibility that this is manufactured drama for the sake of television ratings, and that David is in on the whole thing, snickering at viewers' gullibility.

I think you nailed it.  Sophia was most likely having social issues AND homeschooling gives Farrah flexibility to drag her around the world as she pleases.

Yeah.  This.

Sophia needs her hair kept in better order.  It either needs to be cut or kept in a ponytail/braided.   Even a messy bun would be better than the straggly/frazzled mess it is usually.

Sophia learned long ago that she can't side with Deb.

A few seasons back when Farrah, Deb, and Sophia were at a restaurant, Farrah began to berate her mother (as usual) and told her she couldn't take care of Sophia while she was in London (?) for the filming of the Big Brother show. Deb was upset. Sophia stood up and walked over to Farrah and started slamming her, in her typical Sophia fashion, about hurting Deb and making her cry. Sophia even began to gently hit Farrah to try and get her to stop. There was another incident where Farrah was going at it with Deb while they were at Farrah's home. Sophia was sitting at the counter eating and she again stood up for Deb against her mother. I know there was another time, but I can't remember the details.

Over time, Sophia was reminded of what is expected of her. She has likely gotten the wrath of Farrah and has been reminded she better not ever confront Farrah like that and side with her grandmother, especially on camera. She better follow Farrah's lead or else (insert whatever consequences).

I totally agree (re: Farrah pinning Deb and Sophia against each other), although I think Deb plays the power games too and tries to get Sophia on her "side" (aka against Farrah). Those two have an extremely weird relationship. Codependent?

Sophia isn't as bad off or mistreated as some (most?) of the other kids on this series, but she is going to grow up so emotionally confused.

I also really want to know about all the money stuff going on behind the scenes. I wonder how much Deb and Michael have made off of Farrah, especially Deb; how much of creepy David the Doctor's lifestyle Debra bankrolls...you just know half of this is money-motivated. I used to wonder why they even spoke to each other, but I think at least some of it has to do with money. Same thing with Farrah and Simon. Who is supporting who, etc. I get shady gold-digging vibes from every last one of them, even Michael to an extent, but particularly Farrah, Deb & David.

Ok, missing a dad isn't why she is getting bullied. She is getting bullied because her mom and grandmother are fucking weird as fuck and think they are both porn star super stars.

My daughter's dad is not and never has been in the picture. Kids would ask about her dad but she never got bullied. Kids who grow up in a two parent household don't get it at times that not everyone has the same kind of family that they do.

There are many rumors of Farrah’s high-priced prostitution career. She had a “furniture” business for about 3 years before she opened the store. Her businesses are fronts for money laundering for Farrah and a few friends.  Many believe Simon is a handler/pimp to connect her with wealthy middle eastern types.  Further, some speculate that the engagement ring she purchased for herself was actually a gift from a client that wanted her to be exclusive at the time.

My opinion isn’t popular — but good for Farrah!  Men have raped and exploited women since the beginning of time. If you can get someone to pay thousands of dollars for consensual sex - go for it.

From an orthodontic web site:

"As you know, when you chew popcorn, it breaks up into small pieces and can fit into any space between your teeth. Now imagine this with braces. Furthermore, the kernels of popcorn are hard and can damage the brace itself and/or the wires. Therefore, please wait until your braces come off before eating popcorn."
