Bruinsfan March 4, 2018 Share March 4, 2018 I called it! In the last sketch, when Keenan said "I shouldn't watch, but how bad could it be?" and they showed Charles and Kate making out with those cheek spreaders, I yelled that they should cut back to a stone statue of him AND THEN THEY DID! The second funniest part of the show was the musical guest. I never knew how much I needed to see a guy combining a Fetish Ball outfit and Mr. T's jewelry collection flanked by dual Reggae Urkels! 6 Link to comment
vb68 March 4, 2018 Share March 4, 2018 (edited) OK, I'll start. I hate to say it, but I thought this one was dead until Update started. Then finally the crowd got into it, and Jost and Che did their thing, and it wasn't even near their strongest one. And Leslie always does her best to up the energy. Otherwise everyone else seemed like they were basically walking through this episode. Kate always brings it in that last sketch as Sheila, though. A sketch like The Grabbies should have been merciless, but it just laid there flat as a three day old can of Coke. As Princess Sparkle noted in another thread, it's a huge mystery why Sir Charles has hosted more than any other athlete at four times. Edited March 4, 2018 by vb68 7 Link to comment
Peace 47 March 4, 2018 Share March 4, 2018 I thought that was the strongest cold open they’ve had in awhile. That was a good line about how CNN is “your source for impeachment porn,” because the evening shows do take on that flavor. And it was a great line about how Trump runs the White House like a business—a Waffle House at 2 AM. The crowd went nuts for that even before he got to the kicker about why it was like a Waffle House. I thought the rest of the show was not bad, but man, Charles Barley is emphatically not an actor and I can’t believe they’ve had him back 4 times. Lorne Michaels must have some gambling debts owed to Sir Charles that he’s still working off. 20 Link to comment

ebk57 March 4, 2018 Share March 4, 2018 (edited) I enjoyed this show more than I thought I would, although I agree - don't know why they keep having Sir Charles host. I loved the Waffle House line. I thought the open was strong until Kate showed up. I just don't think Mr. Magoo is her best impression. I did get a kick out of A-Rod inappropriately smiling throughout the sports sketch. I thought he was just having too much fun, but he was also weirdly smiling through the goodnights, so who knows. It might be a thing with him. Anyway, not as bad as I feared. And yay - the show is back! Edited March 4, 2018 by ebk57 7 Link to comment

possibilities March 4, 2018 Share March 4, 2018 (edited) I thought this was one of the best episodes this season! I laughed at almost everything, and the things I didn't like were at least fresh (I appreciate the effort, and prefer they swing and miss than just phone it in). I wasn't crazy about Homework Hotline, though I appreciate the idea behind it. I really didn't like Hump and Dump, because suicide threats are not funny to me, but again-- I didn't mind the idea of "shows where people act crazy and desperate are manipulative and not funny" + the idea of the host responding to it in a serious way plus the female constant not taking the guilt trip or the bait. It just wasn't fun, even if I kind of appreciate the sentiment behind it. I usually don't really care for Last Call, but I thought the cheek spreaders were a great gag, and I do find some of the euphemisms amusing (red carpet). I think I'm just too grossed out by the slobbery kissing to really enjoy these, though. But I thought "impeachment porn" and the waffle house were great. I can't stand Alec Baldwin but I still liked the cold open. I also liked the monologue. It wasn't the funniest thing ever, but I was glad Barkley decided to speak up for LeBron and the NFL kneelers. WU was fun, but I was totally surprised that they had Leslie turn down an invitation to see a game with Colin. I guess they decided to pivot away from her previous attitude. I'm OK with it, just surprised. Loved the Grabbies, Ned's roach militia, and the construction workers. The Champions was Ok, too. I think I would have liked it more if I followed sports. When I saw the tweets on the news I was pretty much expecting this, but they really pulled it off well. Until Kate showed up. Then it devolved from savage incisive political satire to "Chris Christie is fat!" territory pretty quickly. A little disappointing since if they feel the need to bring in Kate and her Sessions impression it wouldn't have been too hard to write some material in the same vein about how he has no hope of a good job after this, or how he has finally found a limit to how far he will twist the law to put minorities in their place. The Trump cold opens are always great when Baldwin is angry instead of depressed and feeling obligated to do it. When I saw the tweets on the news I was pretty much expecting this, but they really pulled it off well. I thought it was one of his better recent efforts, though to me it was because it felt looser than usual. Ordinarily Baldwin is very committed to the idea that Trump is just a dumb, humorless asshole -- it's actually what I initially liked about his impression; it seemed more accurate to me than Darrell Hammond's interpretation of the character as a self-aware shit-stirrer who was winding people up for his own amusement. But after a year and a half, Baldwin's take has started to wear thin, since there's only so many different ways you can spin the idea that Trump is a stupid idiot who's always miserable and never gets the joke. This week, though, Baldwin got to range a little further afield, needling Mike Pence about his homophobia, showing glimmers of self-awareness about the chaos of his administration, and spinning tough-guy fantasies almost as if he were sharing his inner monologue. It felt much more like Anthony Atamanuik's improvisational and wide-ranging impression of the president -- which I know Baldwin has criticized in the past (weirdly, without mentioning Atamanuik by name, but it's clear who he's talking about) for being too "balls-of-his-feet-light," calling him "Gene Kelly Trump." But maybe he's realized (or at least the writers have realized) that you need to branch out a little bit or the impression is going to get really tiresome. Wow...both of them were alllllllll in. And, while I cant figure out why Chuck has hosted 4 times, the writers clearly like him since they pulled up some good stuff. helenamonster March 4, 2018 Share March 4, 2018 As usual, I found the cold open meh with a few sparse laughs (your number one source for impeachment porn, running the country like a Waffle House at 2am) but just letting Alec-as-Trump monologue about the latest batshit news cycle is boring and unoriginal. Add me to the list of people baffled that Charles has now hosted this show four times. I guess being game for anything makes him easy to write for, but it's a bizarre choice for someone who is not particularly good at it and also past his peak of popularity (maybe it's just because I don't follow sports, but I frequently forget exactly what sport he's even famous for playing). Still, I'd rather have a host that's bad but tries and isn't self-conscious than one who makes it perfectly clear that they are contractually obligated to be there. Ned's Roach Away was inspired. The visual of Charles dumping the armed roaches had me rolling. And I was glad they hung a lampshade on how dirty Heidi's house was at the end. Who has that many roaches??? I loved Cecily's Hope Hicks impression. "Thank you so much for this internship or job or whatever this was." Also as someone who followed Leslie's coverage of the Olympics, I was so happy for her that she got to bring Hilary Knight out. She loooooves Hilary and was so excited when the women's hockey team won gold. The popularity of Migos eludes me. That T-Pain-esque autotune was only popular for a very hot second and then swiftly went out of style about a decade ago. 11 hours ago, ebk57 said: I did get a kick out of A-Rod inappropriately smiling throughout the sports sketch. This reminded me why I've never warmed to Melissa Villasenor on SNL. Most non-actor guests (who aren't hosting) tend to smile, maybe out of nerves or the sheer excitement of being in front of a live studio audience. It's something that's kinda charming and easy to give a pass for, because they're there to be who they are for the purposes of the sketch and not as a character that could be played by one of the cast members. That's actually how I realized it was really A-Rod. Melissa tends to smile in the same way in most if not all of her appearances on stage.
