I am so excited to see Aika’s face when she realizes she’s going to have roommates.  I’m also excited to see what she says when she finds out Josh has to pay child support -  that’s money that Josh can’t use to be her provider.

I'm excited to see Josh's face when Aika demands to be taken back to the airport.

A while back, Noon and hubby had a roommate in New Orleans. Didn't take her very long to move them back to Thailand.

People from poorer countries feigning affection to someone from a richer one in order to gain citizenship is nothing new. People who are socially awkward or otherwise unsuccessful in their home country's marriage market looking to poorer countries to go shopping online for a spouse is nothing new. (I liken it to those guys who go to Japan to teach English so they can finally get a girlfriend.)

So why is it that so many of these prospective spouses - particularly the women - seem convinced that they're getting anything other than the dregs of the dating pool after it's been drained and dredged? I get that the First World standard of living that they see on tv and in movies looks luxurious in comparison to their own. I also imagine that some of these online shoppers probably make promises they can't keep (Jorge).

But it's hard to believe that all of these (mostly) women are so completely naïve that they really believe that the man showing interest is wealthy by North American standards. Those kind of men aren't likely to need to shop online for a wife or girlfriend from overseas. (They're more likely to be sex tourists like Chris.) None of these women strike me as stupid, yet they believe that a guy like Josh is going to live in a waterfront palace.

I suppose what doesn't add up for me is how seemingly intelligent (maybe not educated, but definitely not stupid) people can have such a skewed idea of what average working or middle class life in North America really looks like. Yes, it's likely more materially comfortable than their current home, but how do they get to thinking that they're going to be moving into Trump Tower or the Ewing family ranch?

Can anyone shed light on this? It's been bothering me for a while.

If their perception of how the lower middle class & working poor live come from shows like Roseanne or the one on TV right now called "Mom," then that probably looks pretty luxurious compared to working poor standards in the developing world.  Sitcoms and soaps (and everyone, even the poor, looks glamorous in soaps)  get wide play outside the US.   I'm not sure how much play more serious shows get.

But even more serious shows (like SVU) tend to spruce up working poor living conditions a bit.  I'm having trouble thinking of many TV shows that give a realistic depiction of the poor and/or working poor in the US (The Wire?).  That might account for some of the skewed perceptions.   I'm just speculating, though.

They moved to Portland not Thailand. They are still there and look very happy.

What does Josh do for a living? Also, were he and his friends drinking at the airport?

IIRC Josh said he was a home theater installer.

If Aika is his idea of a hot cheerleader, then he went to a very sad high school.

Well, my wife and I couldn't understand why they didn't get married in Thailand and continue to live there in the first place. As for getting married there, it's not like he had that much family that came to the wedding in America, and having her family there was important for her. When it comes to living there, he can make a good living as a bartender in some of the tourist areas, and he liked living there when he was there. He'd certainly make a better living as a bartender there than he would here.

They probably have skewed perception of American life.  However, some people coming from countries where the average income is say $200 a month might find the lifestyle of even working class Americans to be somewhat luxurious. A working class American will have indoor plumbing; hot indoor running water; potable water on tap in the home; a floor that is tile or carpeted, not dirt; a car; air conditioning and heating in the home; and much , much more.  These things are standard here, but not so much for the average person in many poorer countries. And if you live in that kind of poverty, living in an average American working class house or apartment might seem like upgrading to something like the Trump Tower.

Yes, that all makes perfect sense. I suppose the reason that the spouses from impoverished countries don't believe that poverty exists in North America is that their definition of poverty and ours are a long way apart.

I have noticed, however, in a lot of the cases that once they arrived the foreign partner often seems disappointed that the American person lives in an apartment, or a very ordinary or small house. It's as if they're expecting more grandeur somehow.

In any case, if you moved from, say, Karine's family home in that remote part of Brazil into Sean's half finished house, I can see how it would feel like a big step up. But you might also be thinking, "This is it? No chandeliers? No Jacuzzi tub? I thought all Americans had those."

I don't know if I'm making sense anymore...

Just for the record Karine is hooked up with Paul. Sean is hooked up with Abby. Therefore to find Karine in Sean's house, well that would be weird.

Oh, I know. I was just searching for two examples of housing that would be the most polar opposite. We didn't get to see much of where Paul lived, which is probably his mom's house anyway.

But there's definitely scope for a "Spouse House" style spin-off with Paul, Karine, Sean, Abby and (of course) Chris all living together... I freely admit that I'd be watching...

Yes, makes sense. That's how we all are. We are always looking for the upgrade, Apple and Samsung count on it. It's what keeps people moving into bigger better homes, for example.  So, you come here from a poor country and you think, "Wow! Indoor plumbing, potable water on tap, no dirt floor, electric on demand.  That's way better than back home"  But then you realize it's not what was shown on tv and in the movies, and you look around and see bigger, fancier, nicer stuff and you want it, and you are disappointed. It's not just foreigners; it's all of us, and it's what drives capitalism and our entire economy.

Westerners don't make good livings as bartenders in Thailand. That job can be done by a Thai for $400 a month. There are also roughly 30,000 Western hippie backpackers in Thailand who are broke and willing to bartend in exchange for food and modest lodging.

Moreover, Thailand has been cracking down on Westerners living there in recent years and it's not easy for Westerners to get long term visas to live there unless they have good jobs, sponsorship by employer, etc.   If Kyle and Noon want to have kids, educating them to a Western standard is very expensive in Thailand, it's free in American public schools.

Their future is much better in the USA.

I am a bit biased, of course. I'm a generate who has been to Southeast Asia 50+ times but I don't think I'd ever live there.

In fact, I wrote a tongue-in-cheek article a few years back titled "7 Reasons Why You Really Shouldn't Move to Cambodia" which prompted a lot of very, very angry comments.  http://www.khmer440.com/k/2013/07/7-reasons-why-you-really-shouldnt-move-to-cambodia/

Did anyone catch the preview for next week where they're already hinting at Aika modeling?  I'm SO tired of this "story."  Loren wanted Alexei to model, Paola, Anfisa, and now Aika.  Like women can't do anything but model in the USA.

Kirlyam too.

Did anyone notice the huge tattoo on Aika's lower left leg? Having spent a lot of the time in Southeast Asia, I'll say that large tattoos are a pretty good indicator that a woman has worked in a hooker bar.

I would love to know more about Aika’s background.  She seems fairly intelligent, nice and pretty and if she wants a family why hasn’t it happened until now with loser Josh?  Even if she would only marry a US citizen surely there have been better opportunities before Josh.  Has she been a mistress, escort, something I don’t even know about?  Someone had to pay for those implants and contacts.  I also don’t get why he is with her as it seems like he really wants an 18-20 yr old bimbo.

That's an interesting question. Josh is not super old or terrible looking, and he's white, and he's American, so he definitely could get an 18-25 year old Filipina on one of these websites.  It's strange, he's superficial but not about age, I guess.

Many women in southeast Asia have children young and then let their parents raise the kids while they go back to work or even move out of the country for work.  It's possible Aika has a kid. It would be odd for a 36 year old Filipina not to have kids.

I'm thinking that although he thinks he wants an 18-25yr old bimbo, he really doesn't want to have to care care of and support someone so much younger than himself. Can you see him with an 18 year old having her make babies while he supports them? Um no. Aika can take care of herself. Plus she seems like a fun person.

Josh really grosses me out. He looks rode hard and put up wet for his age. I’ve seen men almost two decades older who look younger than him.  I really hate how he treats her like a trophy, what a Neanderthal. I always liked it when men showed me off and were proud to be with me, and a certain amount of that is healthy and makes a girl feel good about herself, but being treated like some prize he won is no bueno.

Aika is growing on me. I like her look better without the colored contacts, but fake lashes need to go. Also like how she has no filter, but is still polite. She also stands up for herself. Why dies the water boy get to wear flip flops to the supermarket and she’s made to go in stilettos? She won’t make that mistake again.

Much to my surprise, the modeling agency is real.  Here's something interesting from their web page:

"We are licensed and bonded by the State of Arizona Industrial Commission, and franchised by the Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA. Signature is not a school and our licensing stipulates that we can ONLY make money off of commissions for legitimate bookings for you or your child. We intentionally maintain a roster of under 500 models/talent (including adults, children), and voiceover talent. As a “Boutique Agency” we can focus more time and energy on your career and help you fulfill your dreams."

In other words, they knew they weren't going to be able to make any commissions from Aika, so they weren't going to waste spend any time trying.

I made a conscious "no heels" decision about 20 years ago.  Ten years ago it was "no makeup."  Five years ago it was "no bra."  I like saying no.  It feels good.

Aika is sort of a contradiction.  Her external appearance is very fake, lots of make up, colored contacts, enormous false eyelashes and (presumably) fake breasts.  But her personality seems pretty real.  She speaks her mind and seems honest and straightforward.

Ugh.  To Josh, Aika is nothing more than a pretty face, big boobs, and skinny body.  He doesn’t seem to care or even know that she has a brain and she wants to use it! she wants to do computer stuff.  Josh is one of those assholes who will complain constantly if his wife gains any weight after having a kid or God for bid has stretch marks. He probably feels like he purchased a beauty queen. He may have enough self awareness to realize that he couldn't find that locally. Although we of course have men (and women) who don't seem to understand their expectations are unreasonable, and want a partner way out of their league.

It's absolutely believable that Josh gave Aika his ex-wife's ring, because Josh is Josh, but her insistence at the jewelry store for the bigger ring like he promised, right then, when he lives with a roommate and obviously doesn't have much, tells me that is a fake storyline too.

Then, she is talking about having a baby and he mentions having to figure out something or other (I was flipping back and forth with football because this show is too long) because he has a vasectomy, but didn't say that exactly, and I'm left to wonder why I'm even watching. Are we supposed to believe that he didn't bother to tell her about it?
