Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Perfect bridge story between 'Jessa gives her baby a hideous name of Catholic hater' and the specials. Josh better be ready for the redemption tour as soon as those speicals are over, or the Leah Remini tour. If Boob wants to keep his family in the media, he needs to slip Josh a few thousand and rent him a room in Amsterdam, above a café in the red light district, while there just happen to be slips to the media. Baby Buddy Michelle can feign surprise and Goody Anna can leave her kids with the lost girls while she hits up weddings and local restaurants all sad, then goes home to her estate for a bubble bath.

Unfortunately, it will probably get great ratings. We'll have to wait and see if that translates into a regular show...

I'm hoping the fact that it's premiering in December, has virtually no sponsors, and focuses on awful people will do it in. My cynical heart, however, knows that the first episode will get great ratings, and TLC will greenlight a series before the first commercial.

I suppose you're right. But what the heck will people be watching for?

To see a replay of J and J's teary made-for-tv complaints about how the media grievously hurt them by outing the non-event of their molestation? To see Anna make her ugly bad-actor prissy face as she expresses completely unearned shock that the husband she was thrilled to marry as a serial child molester later screwed a sex worker,? And to see all the amazing "milestones" that "change everything" that follow these events -- i.e., the J and J bitchez do something unheard of and truly astonishing on this planet of 7 billion people -- give birth. .... And what "everything" gets changed, exactly? Ben still doesn't have a job. Jill still thinks she's a competent medical professional. And they're all still preaching and hectoring the world about virtue and Jesus while not getting day jobs and hoping to live off the suckaz forevs.

I never did get it. And I get it even less now.

The initial specials will probably get great ratings because people will watch out of curiosity.  However, that won't necessarily translate into good numbers if they try to make it a regular series.  From the previews, Jill and Jessa seem to have the combined charisma of a toad, so I can't imagine them maintaining an audience for any serious period of time.  The teaser with sister in law Anna is clearly a ploy to bring in viewers.  Unless the cameras follow her confronting Josh and fighting with him over the terms of their divorce, I don't see her presence adding anything except pulling in a few viewers for the first specials.

Yes. That is exactly why people will be watching. LOL!

IMO, people who found the Godly family schtick boring and never watched this show will suddenly find their utter train wreck fascinating now. I'm not saying it's a good thing. I'm just saying it's the nature of television nowadays.

I watched to see the subtle digs the producers made at Michelle and JimBob, and to see their "well behaved" kids run wild. It was funny because it wasn't me. The kids had a certain feral "kids say the darnedest things that embarrass their idiot parents" uncensored charm too.

Jill and Jessa are as dull as dogshit, almost as dull as Josh and Anna in DC.

I agree. That is why JB needs to secure a courtship for another child pronto. Anna can't carry this show by herself!

. It looks like the number #1 Stepford, I mean Duggar, Wife got ahold of Anna and prepped her for this interview. Depending on the day, I either empathize with Anna or not. After seeing this I do not.
  • Love 6

In seeing the promo, I feel Anna has been forced to participate.  Also, it is so weird that Dr. Jill (of all people) is asking Vapid Selfie Queen if she is prepared for the 'birth'.  I recall talking to my friends about the coming 'baby', never referring to it as a birth.  The child is an afterthought, they are doing what Gothard told them, marry, have unprotected sex, get pregnant and give birth.  Really do despise them.

Perfect, Churchhoney.

That Jill, she is a bright one, huh? Not trying to be mean, but Jill seems very dim witted. I realize she is immature, but she "ain't right."

Jessa is just a prissy bitch. Anna is as big a famewhore as the rest of them. She lauded her good fortune of landing royal Josh, shut up or leave. Anna is getting more skilled at using the Googly Eyes baby talk whisper.

I remain curious about what happens with this clan, only because I think there is more to come. However, I will not watch the upcoming  episodes just because they don't deserve a show.

  • Love 8

I agree with everyone's comments. Jessa and Bin are completely unlikable, and Jill and Derick aren't telegenic enough to appeal to viewers. My jaw hurts just looking at Derick's Instagram photos.

As sick as this sounds, if the Duggars want to really pull in big numbers, they need to film the Joshie Redemption Tour. That would be the sort of trainwreck people can't help but watch.

Exactly. The hooks for the original show simply don't exist for this show. And I don't see any way they can really manufacture hooks that would work.

Anna cries about how difficult it was, but what example is she setting for her children, by staying with Smugs?

It depends on if she is going to follow the fundie example and forgives him.  She will never forget and everything he does from the moment he returns to her will cause her to question everything around her. She will never feel completely secure with him - no matter what he says or she says.

I agree, she is looking healthier.  Hoping she is getting her confidence back (on some level) and realizing that she has lived this long without him- she can live longer.

It may take a while, but my feeling is that this leopard will never change his spots.  Nicest thing he could ever do for her is to divorce her peacefully and let her move on.

Josh just wasn't meant for marriage and multiple children - or this lifestyle.  Too bad he didn't figure it out beforehand and have the balls to act on it.

Oh no..... more weepy shit from Jill, I'm sure it's about the evil media outing their story. "The fire" being the bad press. Boo hoo. Ryan Adams has a song called "Cry on Demand"....Jill could be the star of the video for it.

Then here's Jessa, as pleased as punch cuz she got back her show. It's been kinda scary there for awhile thinking her "man" may have to get a job. Phew.

Aaaaand now Anna, trotted out for titillation of the sleazy Josh story.

Ya know what, none of this will EVER be mentioned in the show. This is all teaser, just like the "conference" they attended to find out about sibling molestation in the home, JUST IN CASE IT EVER HAPPENS TO THEM.

Wow....TLC needs to have their collective heads examined.

{{ETA:: Apologies to Ryan Adams for mentioning his song in the same sentence as a Duggar.}}

I've never watched a single episode. The level of snark here, with all the other stuff floating around about these people, is plenty. No need to tune in, I know all about them!

  • Love 7

Could be. I guess he showed some enterprise by going to Pennsylvania and in scaling those bunk beds back in the day. I'm still not convinced that he used more energy in his pursuit of sex than pretty much everybody does, though. The search for sex hypes up everybody's motivation pretty drastically, I think, but I also think you're still somewhat constrained by the overall energy with which you're equipped!

I guess my experience among my own acquaintance suggests that among people with practical constraints such as children, only a handful manage to assemble a really large number of sex partners -- on the sly or even openly, and even if you're paying for them. And Josh seems a helluva lot more sluggish -- not to mention cowardly, tied to daddy's apron strings, prone to weep in the driveway when moving from mama's house, etc. -- than the people I know who've actually done that! It'll be fascinating to see what does come out and how this all unfolds.

I guess I'm just not buying the vision of Josh Duggar -- Lothario, powerful super-scary lover, Don Juan and Casanova. ha Something tells me his main companion has still been his fist.

I definitely don't picture him as any of those things...i more picture him as Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. He pretends to be devout and pious while lusting after anything remotely female, and ultimately deciding that if all of these evil temptresses are making him aroused then he's just going to give in to his lust.

This is why i can absolutely see the porn star's story as being true. Josh definitely holds himself up on a pedestal and thinks he's God's gift to the world. He also seems to genuinely believe a good deal of Gothardism, so long as it relates to women at least.

I don't picture him as being sexy or enticing to *anyone* (grossss to even think that someone would see him that way)...but i think he's on a permanent power-trip, lusts after all women, and simultaneously thinks they're evil whores for tempting him (whether that temptation was because he saw a glimpse of a knee or collar bone, or whether it's because she's a porn star doesn't seem to make a difference).

I can absolutely see Josh putting on a facade to a woman he's paying for sex and then becoming violent and abusive. I don't think he's physically very intimidating, but i think he could catch a woman off-guard and hurt her, especially while on top of her, or go to a scary evangelical Christian screaming in anger at her and calling her names.

In the book, Frollo is so overcome with his lust/rage combination that he tries to rape Esmeralda; he curses her as a demoness sent by the devil himself, and tries to have her hanged. That just...screams Josh Duggar to me.

Has it been confirmed about the sponsors?  I've read (maybe on this board) that 75 sponsors have dropped out.  What's the source for this?  I hope it's true.

'Cancel the Duggars' on Fb is coordinating the campaign. Looks like over 600 down. TLC will still air this damn thing even with no sponsors.

http://www.starpulse.com/news/index.php/2015/11/04/will-tlc-cancel-jill-jessa-counting-o

As of today, that number increased to almost 630 advertisers, including Hershey's Chocolate, Vtech, Pillsbury, Pepsi (Pepsico), Payless, Kraft Foods, Sara Lee, Fisher Price, and Maybelline.

I want to see Josh breaking out of Prayer Prison and hanging out in bars again picking up his next hook up and saying this is who I am, Anna is better off without me, and I am no longer Duggarized.

I'm going straight to Hell for this one: I want to see Josh actually pay child support for four children under 7, which will necessitate his getting a real job and showing up there on time each day to work.

Maybe TLC will luck out and he'll end up in the Big House. And I'm not talking Jilly Muffin's McMansion.

Biggest question for me is if they do divorce will the Duggars take in Anna and shun Josh?

They'll never shun Josh. They covered for him for so many years and they're still doing it.

They will shun Anna.

What an odd thing to say, "I was so sad to hear what happened.", like she is talking about an earthquake or something. I know it's just a teaser, and probably was filmed closer to the scandal, but it strikes me as odd.

Well, given how these teasers get made, it might have absolutely nothing to do with Josh and the sex workers. She might be referring to the sister molestation, or Jessa's post-birth bleeding, or an earthquake in Chile, or Michelle's arriving too late at Aldi's to snag 28 boxes of frozen lasagna. Who the heck knows what the clip will actually be about when the show finally airs? (if it's even in the show that finally airs)

And the $500,000 is just a placeholder and wishful thinking, anyway, is it not? Under the circumstances, I have a hard time seeing a jury (or judge) awarding her that much when she agreed to have sex with the same guy again after this presumed traumatic event. ... I've been on some civil-trial juries with damages involved and the jury doesn't even know what the person is asking for. They decide on the awards entirely on their own. Is it different in Arkansas? I can't see her looking half-a-million worth of sympathetic to a jury, in this case.

Well, she'll explain that he was sorry the first time, so she and Jesus forgave him.

Might fly in Arkansas.

I would like to see a very raw indie documentary following Josh around for awhile once he gets out of Jesus Jail. Just very honest and in his face. Some sort of on-the-road with Josh thing, preferably filmed in black and white. Raw.

I'd like to never see any of them pictured again. They are worse than the Kardashians.

I'm torn between sick inside over the choice Anna Duggar has to make in life and infuriated with her unwillingness to put herself and her children first.

TLC has no interest in exploring why a 27 year old barely educated mother of four kids under 7 would stay with a monster like Josh Duggar. Even worse, they're unwilling to spend a fraction of the millions they haul in yearly off the Duggars and their dysfunction to offer meaningful counseling and education/career assistance so she knew she had sufficient funds/a career that would support those four kids on her own.

There's plenty of blame to go around in this situation, but no matter how smug and annoying she can be, Anna didn't ask to spend her life dealing with a narcissistic sex addict. TLC's exploitation of what I can only imagine must be her overwhelming pain and betrayal (not to mention the continuing risk that Smuggar gifted his "precious wife" with God knows how many STD's) makes me want to vomit.

And I wish she had the self-esteem to figure out what the hell she could do to get herself and her kids away from him. Permanently.

  • Love 7

This post is an attempt to explain why Anna, sadly, will probably stay, from the perspective of a woman in her shoes.

I've been reading this forum for the past month or so; I've been following the Josh Duggar story like a hawk ever since the 2nd scandal came out, not at all because I'm a fan-- in fact I think he's a worthless POS.  I would love to hope that Anna gets rid of him.  There's a tiny possibility but not very probable...

I was Anna Duggar.  Except thankfully, I did not have children, although my "Josh" was determined to try to get me pregnant.  I was married to a sex addict.  I can promise you a few things:  1.  Anna did NOTHING to cause or deserve it.   2.  I guarantee you, not only is he NOT sorry, the only thing he is going to make any attempt to do, is find another way to go behind her back and do it.  3.  Whether he was in "real rehab" or not, which he is definitely not right now... "real rehab" wouldn't do him a shit worth of good because he has no interest whatsoever in getting help.

"Now, how the hell would you know that?  You don't know Josh, and you have no idea where he stands with the lord blah blah blah how dare you judge someone you never met!!!"

You're right; I don't know Josh Duggar, but I DO know the nature of a narcissist sex addict.  I was married to one for 8  years.

Just like Anna, my husband told me when we first met, that he had abused his previous wife, and that he had surfed porn.  But you see, at the time, I was brainwashed by the evangelical church, which has you believe that "people change" because of Jesus.  He claimed that he had CHANGED and he was SORRY and he was a CHRISTIAN now!   Just like Josh told Anna.  And it was all a hot load of steaming bullshit.

He wasn't sorry... he was just looking for another unsuspecting person to sneak around on.  To "submit" to his perverted controlling ways, like a good christian wife is supposed to.

Each time I caught him cheating again, he told me how SORRY he was.  That he already asked Jesus for forgiveness, and I'm a bad christian if I don't forgive him because god won't forgive me, and let not man tear apart what God put together, and Jesus conquers all, and I have no faith in god and how dare I judge my POS cheating husband.

On top of that, he was the breadwinner and I was financially trapped, so I really wanted to believe that "Jesus conquers all" bullshit, ya know?  it was my only hope of not being homeless.

After number 15, I was done and I left.  He told me I was going to hell for ending my marriage.  I didn't care.  Oh, and he cheated on his mistress within 48 hours after I left him...

Anyway, I'm rambling a bit and might even be breaking the rules by inserting my own story into this, but just giving  you a perspective from someone who has been there.

Thank you for sharing. I can see that what you experienced is exactly what Anna is going through. Thankfully you got out as for Anna we can only have high hopes.

TLC programmers know that the only interesting thing about the Duggars is the Josh story. That's why Anna is in that promo; the easiest way to get attention for the show is to push the Josh angle. But I'd bet money that the Counting On show contains one interview where Anna briefly and unspecifically refers to problems in her marriage, and that it runs at the very beginning. And then after that, it is never mentioned again and it will be nothing but Jessa and Jill and their uteruses. In other words, I think it's just a bait-and-switch tactic to get viewers to tune in.

Ms Dillon...'s 28, and 25 year olds are considered MILFs, i.e. over the hill, in the porn industry, so her career could've dried up due to that fact alone.

So he had his choice of porn stars, and went for someone MILFy, even a bit older than himself? Velllllly interesting...vellly interesting. *reaches for Dr. Freud glasses*

I siad it before and I will say it again, it is all mother issues with him.

I tend to think so, too. Consider that while growing up he was admonished to deny everyone's sexuality (yeah, that worked) EXCEPT for dry-humpin' Mama and Daddy.

Because, like all the rest of them, he was forcibly created to be a person with no soul, mind or will of his own. He was supposed to swallow the "thinking" of his crap parents and follow their lead without deviation because that's the only way they can imagine someone being able to live a "godly" life.     Too bad what it really does is create dead souls or monsters or, at the very least, completely confused and frustrated chidults.

Michelle and JIm Bob oughta be kicked from the TTH to Big Sandy and back again for their stupid child-raising theories.

Josh went to DC to sell the beliefs his parents drilled into his brain at an early age. He capitalized on his parent's five minutes of fame aka famewhoring and being the oldest of nineteen kids. He thinks he is something special, people will be drawn to him, and he is above being punished for molesting five young girls and cheating on his wife. The devil is to blamed for all of his naughty behavior. He is not five years old. Time to take a look at himself for his past behavior and stop blaming the devil and momsie and popsie for the way his life turned out.
