They basically said it was because they didn't trust the agency. eta The attorney went on to say that if Smuggar is convicted, Anna has no choice. CPS will interview the kids. Meanwhile, when they hear about other abused kids, they are the first to assign blame to CPS for not intervening. ETA -there is a poster on Twitter who claims to have provided security to them in 2015, and claims that the whole family fled to Oklahoma after the scandals to avoid CPS. I wonder if they have taught the children to fear the people who are working in CPS? If Josh is found guilty ( from my keyboard to God's ear) and CPS comes to interview the children that may be terrifying. Who knows what they gave been told. I hope this is over soon for the sake of the children in all the families. Everyone is probably very stressed and that tension is felt by the kids. 4 Link to comment

Rootbeer December 8, 2021 Share December 8, 2021 From my limited experience with civil trials: probably the judge will send a message to the jury soon asking if they’ll feel they could reach a verdict in the next hour or two. If yes, the judge will encourage/recommend that they continue. If they’re not close, the judge will suggest wrapping up for the evening and starting fresh in the morning. 4 9 Link to comment

floridamom December 8, 2021 Share December 8, 2021 When my then-husband and I were first married, we shared one car and worked 1 block away from one another. I have spent many evenings in the courthouse hall way waiting for verdicts from a trial he did that day. Juries could deliberate well in to the evening, even 11pm if the judge wants to wrap it up...OR they could go until earlier and return in the morning. We just won't know which way this judge will swing. 1 14 Link to comment

It could be they are almost there, but there’s a lot of paperwork to complete, etc. and they’d rather just wait until morning. True story: my late father was foreman of a jury in a criminal case. He was also in his 70’s and worked part-time in his own business, so no big commitments. Anyway, the jury got the case in the afternoon, discussed and reached a guilty verdict. All that was left was an hour or so of paperwork and they would then get to the court for reading the verdict. It was already 5 or so, the judge let them know they could work as long as they wanted. My father’s suggestion? Go home, come back in the morning for the court supplied breakfast, do the paperwork, get the verdict read and they’re on their way home with an additional 50 bucks jury pay and the rest of the day off. That verdict was unanimous too. 5 12 23 Link to comment

Churchhoney December 8, 2021 Share December 8, 2021 (edited) Lots of juries start out divided. Very few end up that way. It's only been one afternoon and there was lots of stuff to do. Sometimes you wait a while for somebody to volunteer to be foreperson -- I can imagine that happening on this trial! ETA: Foreperson of this jury is going to have reporters chasing them down, no matter which way the verdict goes. A good reason to hesitate. Edited December 8, 2021 by Churchhoney 4 9 Link to comment
