If the kids are really as isolated as we think, I bet their "internet friends" seem very real and important. Ha, I should talk, the way I live on this site! But I do have real friends. I am curious about the emotional satisfaction the girls, especially, may receive from the kind remarks they get via social media.

Another question - I wonder if the married women are allowed to be home alone. Because if they wanted to sin (and I don't think they do), they could always have a pizza man or pool boy or something come by. A la the porn that Josh would know about. I am kidding, of course, but I do wonder if these people think Jessa and Jill are able to be home alone without accountability partners. Because if not, there is another reason to keep everyone living close; you would never know when another Duggar might drop by.

With all of the kids the women are supposed to pop out, they will never be alone. And if they do get a moment's peace, they probably want nothing more than a nap.

Unfortunately, at least for now, he is truly a Duggar. Poor kid

Ben or Spurgeon?  ;)

Spurgy. They call the child Spurgy.

I still think the deal was Ben would get the name Spurgeon, and Jessa would get the nickname Elliot. Then Benessa read criticism on social media about the name Spurgeon and had to double down. Hence, we get Spurgy, which sounds like something to wash a sink with. These two "adults" have a combined age of 22.

I think that's exactly what happened. Jessa is definitely the type to cut off her nose to spite her face, so while she hates the name Spurgeon, she won't call him anything else other than a derivative of that name because of all the internet talk about how awful it is and how she must hate it. Jessa more than the rest of them feels compelled to tell the internet to fuck off on a regular basis.

I wish they would call that poor kid Elliott. "Spurgeon" sounds like some kind of mold species. You can't even make a halfway decent nickname out of it. He's too much of a cute little chubber to be stuck with such an awful name.

She could avoid all these feelings by taking herself off of television. Talk about your first-world problems.

"I pay my bills by having my idiotic life portrayed on tv as cute and charming and special-ecial to God and Jesus. And I'm so so so mad that some of the completely stupid and, sometimes, venal and rotten things I and my family frequently do get criticized. Waaaaaaahhhhhhhhh."

Geez. It's a gauge of her stupidity and obliviousness that she doesn't seem to realize that when you broadcast your mundane activities to the world for a decade plus, you're pretty much asking for whatever commentary comes along.

I don't know if it's an Internet FU or that's the one thing Ben put his headship foot down on.  Remember, they weren't even going to call the baby Elliot as a nickname -- the nickname was going to be Quincy.  I definitely see where Ben would be annoyed that his kid wasn't going to be called any derivative of his given name especially since the name had such meaning to him.  Plus, I have a feeling Jessa let him choose Spurgeon for this child because she wanted a less Christian-focused name for any girl she has.  She wouldn't have an argument in that case for not calling Spurgeon by his given name.

And he's playing volleyball on a basketball court in his pajamas.

And he'll most likely be homeschooled by two of the dumbest, most ignorant people on the planet, one of them a big education-despiser (even though she was the Dugg Acad "teacher."

So although they worship big-college sports, his chances of going to any big college to get an actual education may be slim to none.

So, yeah, enjoy sitting on the basketball court, Spurgeon. That's about all your butt will ever see of any major educational institution. You'll probably end up a toilet cleaner, like your father. But I guess that's as high as Princess Mom Jessa can aspire, really. And I'm sure she thinks it's the be-all and end-all of lives. Since she's a Duggar, so anything she and her family does is by definition the best.

It would be great if she'd get a clue. But it looks as if she's a doubledowner instead.

I was surprised to see Ben walk through the door twice in front of Jesse and Michelle. Very poor manners for a young man. Wonder if that is true fund's. Men always go first? Anyone else notice this?

It would seem with Fundies being into traditional gender roles, that manners would be more of a priority. Southern gentlemen, they are not.

He probably farts at the table, too.

Is this still an actual thing in America? That men are supposed to wait for women to go through doors first? What is the reasoning behind this? Sorry for asking; I live in a country where politeness is more gender neutral. The whole waiting for others to pass is not really a thing but if there's someone behind you, you hold the door open for them regardless of gender. The only times I'd imagine anyone waiting for someone else to enter first would be if they were carrying something heavy, or if they were an elderly man or woman or someone with other difficulties navigating doors.

Re: the name issue.  The boys do seems to get biblical names or those of significance in their "religion".  The girls, not so much.  I don't know of any Jill, from the bible.  I hope somebody makes a mistake and the recorder adds a "Mary" as the first name of all of Jessa's girls.  Mary Eve, Mary Hepsebah, etc.

BTW I  hope they all vote Dem since there is now email evidence of a bias against Catholics.  What a conundrum  for the super conservative Duggar gang.

It can be, especially depending on age and location. I was raised in the South (in North Carolina and Arkansas), and it's not uncommon for men to still be expected to do this.

Personally, as a twenty-something woman, I subscribe much more to how things are done in your country. (Where do you live, if you don't mind my asking? Not trying to be creepy! I just always like learning about other countries. :) ) I've always thought that whoever gets to the door first without their arms full of stuff should hold the door open for someone behind them, regardless of gender.

But I've met my fair share of men my age who insisted on opening the door for women. I have sometimes surprised some of my fairly progressive male friends who were raised in the South by opening the door for them because I got there first. It doesn't make them mad, but a few have told me they really never understood the whole door thing but just do it because they were raised that way.

But there was this ass I went to school with (on a conservative Christian college campus in the Ozarks) who would literally sprint ahead of women to open the door for them. That just infuriated me because it was so showy. The one time he tried to pull that with me, I actually ran ahead of him, beat him to the door, and then held the door open for him with a huge smile on my face. Probably didn't help that he was with a group of friends he was trying to impress, but he was furious. He honestly almost refused to go through, and when he finally did, he was glaring at me like he wanted to smack me in the face with the door. A real paragon of chivalry. Humiliating him in front of his friends is one of my fonder memories of college. :)

I think for the most part its the same here as it is where you are. Both genders hold doors, however they may not wait for someone to pass through the door, but will hold it until the next person is holding it open for themselves. It seems to be the norm now across generations.

The exception to the rule is for the same reasons you mentioned too. For the most part both genders go out of their way to help someone who is older and/or has an obvious need.

Dear Ben and Jessa--I'm sorry I haven't been paying much attention to you and Spurgy lately. I haven't seen your show in a really long time either. I've been spending my time with the 90-Day Fiance show. Cheer up. I'm keeping you on my list of stupid people who somehow get on tv, but the 90-Day couples are, well, just so much more entertaining and interesting than you and your dim relatives. No hard feelings, I hope. Love, B&J

Since Ben comes from a Vision Forum background and not Gothard it is a bit surprising. It was classic VF romance that he used with all the flowery ways he courted Jessa. VF was extreme patriarchy wrapped up in manly virtues cosplay for those members who could afford it. Thankfully we can use past tense verbs with that group.

But in this scenario, part of the discussion is about Ben's mother in law.  It's not about saying he stampeded past every woman in the land (though it does sort of sound like he did so); he's not even showing any deference to an older woman in his family, whom he knows and should have solicitous feelings towards.  In fact, I'd think it would be courteous if he let all his SIL's and female family members pass through a door before he did.  Other than that, I agree it's generally older people plus the temporarily or longer-term infirm, who get the courtesy.

Yes to all of this. 90 Day is the gift that keeps on giving and it's funny as hell. I've seen plenty of other Duggar posters on there as well.

That said, I don't want the Duggars to start being mean to each other or do the kind of things we see on 90 day.  I just want them to be more entertaining.  They were much more enjoyable when they were going on all these trips (not home s hook camps or missioncation ) and doing more experiential things. Now that those aren't in the budget anymore, they have shown themselves to be drier than cracker juice.

They're too stupid to take advantage of the show. Kate Gosslin and other reality TV stars have book deals, music, clothing lines, etc. The Duggars only target christian folks. Even duck dynasty makes millions outside of the show.

Not at all, I live in Sweden and I'm the same; it's always interesting to figure out how people in other countries do things, like everyday stuff. I think that is one of the reasons why I enjoy being on this forum so much. I mean, we do get a lot of American culture exported over here via television, movies, food chains etc but the small things (like door opening etiquette) tend to get lost and I find those really fascinating (I think I might have been an anthropologist in an earlier life ;)

I've just a found a gem of a subreddit: /r/niceguys/ where your schoolmate would've fit in perfectly. Apparently opening doors is the height of chivalry for a certain type of "Nice Guy" and it absolves them of more complicated behaviours like treating women like equals. At least Bin doesn't belong to this group of men? Yay?

Thanks! Every photo I've ever seen of Sweden is so lovely. I've always found Scandinavia in general fascinating--it's a goal of mine to travel there one day. :)

Yes, I love learning the little details too! I watch a lot of British and European television--though the latter is definitely harder to find here--and enjoy noticing the cultural differences, though I know a lot of it goes over my head completely.

I do think he would have fit in well! He really did seem to think he was chivalrous and treated women well. We were in the same degree program but separated by a couple of years, so I only had one class with him. I remember he reacted badly anytime a woman disagreed with him, and he was very controlling of female classmates during group work, but he never acted that way toward men. He confronted me one time--this was long after the door incident--because he had heard I called him a misogynist. (That's not a label I use lightly, but he is one of two men I've met--both at that school--who fully earned it.) I guess he thought I was going to deny it (I didn't), and he seemed just completely bewildered that anyone would think that of him.

I think I've mentioned before on here, but a lot of people I met at that school reminded me of the Duggars.

Jeans and dress shirts aren't the most comfortable clothing. I think Spurge looks adorable and his outfit is too, but why not some cute sweats or some baggy overalls? It seems we only see him "dressed up" or in pajamas. My kids would have been nudists if they could when they were toddlers. I had one kid who mastered the art of stripping before she was one.

My brothers and sisters as toddlers did the same thing of stripping down to their diaper and going barefoot. My mom and dad just laughed it off as the precious innocence of children. I probably did it too.

I can only imagine the Duggars and other Gothardites clutching their pearls at such a defrauding sight. Maybe this is the real reason behind their "logic" of beating babies.

Because the Duggars have been taught from Day One and on every succeeding day, first because of the Gothard lies and then because we-gotta-be-on-reality-TeeVee, that Image Is Everything and Image Is the Only Thing and what you are inside is to be squelched, ignored, mauled and manipulated in favor of the Image That We Must Display To the Whole World.

That's Duggar life. Kids raised with absolutely no respect for honesty or authenticity or personal choices. And where everything is done to conform to something you may or may not be and/or to prove something to somebody and shove it in their faces and/or for show and peacock display.

Comfort for a baby? Not a big consideration. Much more important is that he show off his mom's taste in clothing to the world.

Jessa seems to have learned this lesson far more than Jill...and yet even she has seemingly very little filter when it comes to other things apparent in photos. Things like keeping the immediate environment clean and safe seem to be secondary to wardrobe.

At least one can say that there is SOME degree of individuality in the way they dress, in that Jill's "natural" vibe is a bit more hippy-dippy than Jessa's. I'm sure Derick has some influence there, but (though I don't really watch the show; just going on photos I've seen) that seemed to be the tendency even before they met.

So, Jessa's back to the body-con shirts. No surprise there. I'm pretty grossed out by her belly button.

This sighting also means Jinger is still a single woman.

I just read that the due date is officially Feb. 2., which means that Jessa was almost 3 months gone when they were in NYC. No wonder she was showing so much that many of us called the pregnancy (I know I did).

Now that we know the due date, there is NO WAY IN HELL that she kept the news from ANYONE in her family for 13 weeks (what she would have been when Jilly Muffin returned from big, bad Danger America). Even JOSIE could have figured it out by then. So yeah, tonight we are treated to yet another Duggar Fabrication for the cameras. We'll just have to see if Jill is there. If not, they could be manipulating timelines to finish off the JinJer story before introducing this one. Or would TLC FORCE Jessa to wait until Jill came home to have this ice cream social that, at that late date, surprised absolutely nobody.
