S12.E08: Guilty Pleasures Dinner

Did I somehow miss it when Tregaye's POV all of a sudden became food fusion? Also, I don't understand how it happened that she personally hates Ana.

Giada must have a running scorecard where she personally docks Erin points when Erin doesn't announce she's a baker in every single presentation. And Giada's paste-on terrified wide smile that she had all of tonight's show freaks me out.

Back it up, Tregaye, I'm pretty sure you made a crack about Erin's weight in her talking head during the presentation. That made me more uncomfortable than Jernard's Presentation-o'Porn. I did appreciate his apology, though.

I thought Erin's cookie/cake was fine! A decadent guilty pleasure chocolate chip cookie doesn't have to be oozing chocolate to the point where you can feel the pimples popping out, Bobby. Her comments during judging were warranted. I didn't appreciate Tregaye talking down to her and telling her how to feel like she was a child.

Well, now we know how Miss Perky gets when you dare say something critical... I've known women just like her (perky! All! The! Time!)... Cross them or slight them in their opinion, and face their wrath. It's exhausting.

And Tregaye. I missed last week's ep and I thought "hey, Tregaye is growing on me!" Until the snotty THs started again.

I can take or leave the rest of them, and I guess I wish them the best?

And Ana skates through again.  Was this woman even born in Cuba?  She is worse than Debbie who was Korean quite a few seasons back.  Is Ana a US citizen or did she escape Castro on a raft?

Tregaye continues to shine.  Poor Jenard had an off week though.  Damiano just does not interest me.  Of the final four, there are only two I would be interested in.

Please send Ana and her stringy hair dangling over the food home.

The fix is in for Ana! I'm sure of it. I thought her presentations were awful tonight too.

How does she continue to make it through when she's been in the bottom close to every week?

In that first challenge...was the struggling to connect POV to the challenge....the challenge itself?  Because that's the premise of this entire series that we watch...it just came to a freaking head for some reason where it was edited as everyone saying "I have no connection to this dish.  I don't know what to say."

It was almost comical....the fact that they force these poor people to have a POV and then clearly show when you stick someone with some stupid dish to make that they either have to flat out make up something (BAKER!!!!!!!!!) or just be good at being fleeky (I'm fluttering my hands at you)...blah.

And Erin totally went off the deep end there...negative feedback on her baking and she totally internalized it as she was a horrible fraud of a person who baked...sheesh.  They didn't think your cookie chunk sitting on a paintbrush drag of ganache was decadent enough....nor the chocolate dessert you were selling.  Get over it.

Her contract page 16, paragraph 2, line 3 that states "Reality contestant is guaranteed appearance as primary on no less than 75% of finished total episodes of season.  In the event that contestant ends up being a bone target of judges or producers of show then contestant wins show, all prizes of show without exceptions and a set of Bobby Flay ceramic nested bakers in Mesa Sunset Orange."

I'm a horrible person, because when the judges critiqued Erin's dry-looking dessert and she got all snippy and defensive, I was delighted, knowing it would probably be the end of her.  I still don't really like any of these people, but that was not a decadent dessert, nor a good attitude, so bye-bye Miss Perky!  Even Ana deserved to stay over you.

He'll get booted soon. They won't have two African American males win in a row. As I said last week, this thing looks set up for Sunny Jr. on Fleek.

Chocolate chip cookie is a decadent dessert?  Maybe as a garnish for some other rich, gooey concoction, but, oh my, no, not as the star.  Or the chocolate chips would have to be made of something better than I've ever heard of.

Like many of you, I have trouble thinking of any other group of contestants I have cared less about.  The format is blah, the contestants are blah - time to pull the plug, I'd say.  I actually forgot all about the show for about three weeks, and had no idea who was missing when I watched again.  Bye show, you used to be fun.

Why would Erin mention she's a baker when she made a jambalaya hot dog? It has nothing to do with it!

Come to think of it, couldn't she have done a savory baked dish with a nod to jambalaya? Spicy sausage cornbread or something?

I really, really thought this was Jernard's week to go.  Erin's outburst almost seemed scripted.  It was weird.

Damiano did fine but he talked about 10 times faster than usual.

Alex G. helping Ana with advice in her presentation was unfair.  It was like "tampering with the presenter" and sure enough, Ana miraculously improved and made it through to another week.  Her talking heads were prominent and very polished and like a different Ana.  Bobby's smirk when he looks at her -- creepy.

Giada's very low-cut dress was particularly noticeable tonight in contrast to Trisha and Alex's tops.  I get that she has a very nice figure but good Lord, it makes her look so desperate.

Giada found yet another cutout dress.

Tregayne is from Philly? What, via Mississippi? That accent is not Philly.

Erin is at sea here, pitifully.

Wait, Ana, you were in the bottom two - how'd you "turn a corner with the mentors"?

"Celestial creatures." Yes, Ana, please go back on the meds. But she's being given a positive edit tonight.

Damiano can be really annoying, but sometimes he makes me laugh, like with the monkey with cymbals tonight.

OK, Bobby's praise for Tregayne is OTT. She's occasionally funny but equally cringeworthy.

I disliked Erin's guilty pleasure clip. She's criticizing Damiano having time left over, but the only reason she didn't is because she...did...her...piece...like...this.

Damiano was a lot more appealing tonight.

I didn't think Erin's dish was decadent enough. And I think Damiano helped it a lot. But that wasn't actually a cookie. It was like a muffin.

Oh, don't argue with judges.

"I gave you the best that I could" ok then your best isn't good enough. Buh-bye.

Or why is she on this show in the first place??  She doesn't seem like a baker who has a large skill set of savory items.  I'd be more impressed if she managed to take the challenges and turn them into baked items in her skill set (like your example).   But in the talking heads...the Durrrrrrrr factor is rewarded.

"jambalaya???!!!  What's that?????"

I think Jernard was on his way out until Erin made the cardinal mistake of getting angry with Bobby.  And while that was a really weird thing to choose for a decadent dessert, a different theme for her presentation might have saved her as well.

As for Ana, it seems like every cooking show has one really unlikeable loudmouth that brings on the drama.  And s/he gets to stay until penultimate episode because the producers believe Drama = Ratings.

A warm, gooey, chocolate chip cookie on chocolate ganache with a little ice cream and homemade hot fudge would have been decadent and chocolatey.  A chocolate chip cookie on top of ganache with the cold mousse stuff on top, even with the pretty gold-leaf raspberry doesn't scream decadent. She tanked herself by going on and on about chocolate and not delivering...then arguing with them by not understanding what their criticism was. I'm sure the cookie was delicious, but it didn't scream decadent or chocolate. I would have eaten it though. Yum in any case. Love me some chocolate chip cookies.

Ana needs to go home, stat. She must be an AMAZING chef, because she is horrible on camera. No personality, even when they say she's doing well.

Tregaye had that moment in the back room when she was so kind to Erin, but that Tregaye is overshadowed by all her shade-throwing THs and her obnoxiousness on camera.

I don't care who wins, because there is really no one left I like.

Eh, they dragged her on thanks to FN's green policy. You know, recycle. Recycle as many people as they can. She'll turn up on Cuthroat Kitchen next. Or on Chopped, wringing her hands about what she'll be able to bake out of duck pate, canned potatoes, and cherimoyas.

I think Ana is still around because she has embraced the "evil" edit and the producers like her talking heads. All of the other stuff, like cooking and presentation, is secondary when they evaluate her.

Giada was strapped in tight for the judging round. (Not that I was paying attention to anything but her eyes and brilliant smile.)

Damiano gets pasta and Erin gets dessert. Purely coincidental I'm sure. BTW, that challenge was perhaps the laziest concept we have seen on this show. Cook something and tell us about it.

I didn't think I could hate poppin' fleek more but I was wrong. She's a bitch with no discernible point of view and I would rather watch anybody else than her. I can't see why so many like her. I think she is horrible. I can't get behind any of them at this point. I guess I am really not a desirable demographic for this network.

Erin was really out of line at judging. I don't care if you've made millions of chocolate chip cookies.  And I don't care how much you window dress it.  It's not indulgent.  The very fact that you make them every damn day only reinforces the fact that a chocolate chip cookie is not a guilty pleasure.

I actually thought Ana did well in the "describe a guilty pleasure" intermediary challenge; she didn't talk about anything poppin', which was an improvement over the challenge winner's presentation for me. She doesn't have the presentation skills otherwise to win this thing, but I'm not offended by her staying over really anyone who's left on the main show at this point. I'm clinging to Star Salvation to deliver the ultimate victor.

Jennard needs to can it with the Love Chef shtick; between his dinner presentation and dish and Erin's defensive meltdown, I was fine with either going ahead of Ana in that particular trio.

Ana wasn't the worst one. I would have been ticked if she had been sent home tonight. That thing Erin baked wasn't a cookie. If that was the best dessert she could make, she deserved to go home. I didn't think it looked that good or decadent. It was a muffin with a little mousse on it.

I'm not even sure how Damiano was better than Ana tonight. He couldn't remember the ingredients in his enchilada. Ana came in second next to the chosen one, on fleek, Tregaye in the first challenge.

Alex called Erin's chocolate chip cookie a "molded blondie."   This to me means as a chocolate chip cookie it wasn't even very chocolaty even though as she was describing it the camera showed she was going to put in 2 kinds of chocolate chips/chunks (camera also picked up toffee bits but don't know if those made them in.)  It was a big pan bar.  That's even worse...I make pan bars for my tennis team.  Eye roll.

Anyone else want to comment that Jernard deep fried big rolls of bread into a greasy soggy mess?  LOL how did this dude not go home this week?

Somehow Erin's outburst reminded me of PMS.  It seemed a little over the top in a way that I can only remember PMS making me get.  Like hypersensitivity to the max and out of character.  Stress magnified it.  She probably really regretted that later.

I've been thinking this for weeks but it's getting to me now.  I really believe Ms. poppin' fleek has studied Eddie Murphy's delivery and is at times attempting to imitate it.  She can imitate him all she wants, she's no Eddie.

Jernaud's apology was sincere but dude should have known better in front of those two women.  Trisha Yearwood especially.

Damiano is growing on me a little bit but that doesn't mean I have much interest in him.  At least he seems sincere.  What he did to try to improve Erin's dessert was quite nice of him.

Ana is like a horror movie monster that just keeps coming back from the dead.  Please, someone stop the insanity!  I really feel that Bobby has a thing for her.   It was on his face and there's no denying it.  For whatever reason he likes her.  Probably thinking with the little head.  Who knows why, but he may just have a fantasy attraction with her.

It doesn't bother me the race of anyone who wins or loses this show.  There are times (or maybe edits) that I enjoy Tregaye...if anything her edits kill her because perhaps IRL she is actually quite funny.  She seems bright and able to improvise.  I like that about her.  It's when the networks makes her a dancing bear that makes her overuse stupid slang...and that she goes along with exaggerating this stereotype.  I believe that somewhere between the 2 lies the truth.  If she wins I hope that the edits calm down and she will just be able to be a host that is bright, charming, comfortable around people and not just a verbal diarrhea of finger snaps and useless words.

Fascinating.  I see it now.  That's weird.  Tregaye definitely has comedic timing..that's what I actually enjoy about her.  Bobby and LBH's over the top reactions to her just make me wonder if IRL she really is so comedic you know?  We see dumb little edits but they are almost howling with laughter.  They cannot be this obtuse can they?

I also agree on Erin...if anything it could also be the same editing...up until this time it's been coached snark and rainbows with sparkles.  Out of nowwhere (to us) she implodes.

It doesn't bother me either. I'm just basing my prediction on what need the NETWORK needs to fill to attempt to attract a younger demographic, which has been their goal for the past few years. Damiano might be about the same age, but do they need an Italian guy for what is likely going to be some kind of travel show? The Guy Fiettttti fans would complain that they can't understand him. I don't want to hear about Jenard's kids, and Ana is dull as dirt. I also doubt they're producing any more stand and stirs from these people. They're here to fill different niches and holes in their demographics. Not everyone watches The Kitchen, and Sunny has already lost her dump and stir show, so it's pretty evident that if Fleeky Girl wins, she's not going to be doing that. It's not MY preference, but she DOES have personality. But frankly, whoever wins this season will be one-and-done with whatever they're given as their prize. If they're lucky, they might get a judging slot on GGG once a season. Maybe.

"The mentors are starting to understand who I am." Is that why you're in the bottom every week?

Why would anybody think that a hot dog would be making jambalaya their own?

And geez, Damiano, just put some peppers into a pasta.

Oh, no, Ana is a mother.  She just won. And wow, did you know that she's Cuban? Jesus, Cuban, Cuban, Cuban!

Hey, Damiano, you need to do something other than pasta. And geez, slow down when you're presenting!

Ugh, I want to take a shower after listening to Jernard's presentation.

That was a cookie?  She needed a chocolate brandy sauce instead of a cream cheese sauce, that would have made it more decadent.  Or maybe with kirsch.

Don't argue with the judges!

I think Erin went home over Jenard because she argued with the judges instead of accepting the criticism. Jenard did the opposite.

I still don't care if they were worse than Ana. Ana is consistently in the bottom. She should have gone weeks ago and I want her off my TV.

ahhh I get it now, thanks for the clarification!  and I also agree LOL.   Definitely filling demographics because S&S shows are rare.  I thought maybe Damiano could win and they could have him go around the country and taste BBQ.  Added bonus?  He'll get to learn the names and locations of more states in the USA.

Well, my long Ana post disappeared, but here are my three points:

1.  She did better this week.  I'm slowly moving up from loathing to "maybe."

2.  I feel the need to shove her in the shower with a deep leave-in conditioner and a jar of apricot scrub--I sense she might be pretty, underneath there.

3.  Who the hell prepares three appetizers to start a five course meal?  Not dainty little tidbits, either!  Pork belly & polenta, a chorizo & ham empanada AND a freaking open-face Cuban sandwich, covered with cheese sauce.  WTF?  That's not an appetizer--it's a buffet.

After she's done showering if we could cut those straggling face framers that would be cool.

Jernard doing his little dance to illustrate "butterflied on the inside"  was pure nastiness.  And I don't want to hear again how he is "chef of LOVE"  because he has nine kids.  It's not an accomplishment.  It doesn't even mean you're GOOD at sex, just that you've had sex at least 9 times!

I love a chocolate chip cookie.   BUT - every chain restaurant these days has the same thing as their decadent dessert - a cookie (sometimes a brownie), ice cream, some fudge sauce, and whip cream.   That's pretty close to what Erin delivered.  Only hers wasn't even baked like a COOKIE so it gets a little crispness! It was more like a muffin.   She might sell thousands of them, but that doesn't make the dessert decadent.  Nabisco sells millions of cookies - so what?    Better to make a flourless chocolate cake, which is like baked fudge - maybe with a raspberry puree, how about a little espresso powder added to the cake so it's a mocha flavor?   That would be my idea of a guilty pleasure chocolate dessert.

I think Trey Parker and Matt Stone probably should revive the 'Chef' character on South Park and get Jernard to do the voice-over..
