The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

Religion was not the problem.   It was how she and her husband chose to interpret their relationship to Jesus that was the problem.   They chose the way that was guaranteed to foster any abusive tendencies there were in that relationship.   In other words, even if they were atheists, he would have been just as abusive.   The abuse just wouldn't have been hidden under the guise of "religion."   He would have blamed stress at work for how he treated her or something like that.   Abuse happens because the abuser CHOOSES to be abusive.

Just read this on the Duggar official:

This week we are slowly making our way to DC!

Come meet the whole family in Washington, DC this weekend for FRC Action's Annual Values Voter Summit! We will be singing on stage and signing books, we hope you to see you there!

Register now at ValuesVoterSummit.org

Please!  If anyone lives in DC, can you please show up to this event wearing something totally defrauding.   Also, please bring along a used feminist pro-choice book for them all to sign.  She said signing books- she didn't say it had to be their book.

Ha! I actually think it would be funny to wear extremely defrauding clothing with PRO-Duggar types of posters and signs! Maybe some booty shorts with a cut-off wife beater t-shirt, complete with underboob, and some high heels.  A guy could wear some small Magic Mike style attire--shirt wide open and ab exposing.  If David Waller is there he'd probably love that.

Oh my, great ideas! Too bad I'm on the Left Coast. I PRAY someone steps up to this challenge!

I think anyone showing up at that particular venue in anything less than a suitably modest dress for females and a suit with tie for guys will be quickly escorted out. You know that place will be crawling with security, too.

The FRC will probably have national media there as well...

I think it would be hilarious for a group to show up in modest business type attire and then when they get up close to the Duggars and their ilk strip the suits off a-la Magic Mike down to some silly little bikini type "immodest" number. I'm sure they'd immediately get thrown out, but to see everyones' faces would be priceless!

OMG - that thought makes me so freaking happy!  LOL  That would definitely make TMZ.

I wish I was in the area.  I hate everything this hate group stands for and would love to crash the party.  I'm in Florida and they never come here.  (except for the smuggars).  I think the long skirts on beautiful beaches are just too much for them.

This is actually a pretty big annual fundraiser in DC conservative circles. There will be plenty of young interns with short skirts and low cut tops.

What they neglect to say is that it's not cheap - just to get a daily pass to see the exhibit and hear the speakers is $75.00. The weekend pass is a little cheaper at $99. But if you plan to attend the breakfast or dinner with any of the big names (not one of whom had the name Duggar) it can easily run $500 a person or more. And proceeds partly go to fund FRC political actions.

Believe me, two minutes of media exposure before being thrown out will only make the Duggars feel they were right for "sheltering" their children, give more money to a group most of us wish would go away, and draw attention to them.

That's a lose-lose in my book.

The newer Duggar Homeschooling video is such a farce. It shows more of the kids running around doing their usual nothing than showing them doing schoolwork. There were a couple of clips of individual kids in front of a computer supposedly working on the curriculum from the company that "mama" MEchelle did the video for. There were more family shots (one was them outside in their usual birth order line). What does that have to do with home schooling? I loved the shot of them sitting at the SOTDRT with one of the younger girls, riding a kids bike, squeezing thru the space between the backs of the kids sitting at the table & the wall. OMG! I guess she was done her schoolwork & she was at recess. There's a clip at end showing Ginger playing piano (once again is this home schooling?) with one of smaller girls (I cant tell them apart) perched on the top of the back of the sofa. At least she wasn't walking across it. If I was the curriculum company, I would be embarrassed to show it. This video surely portrayed home schooling in a negative way - more goofing off than schooling.

I was also surprised they are showing more negative responses in the Comment Section after video. People were questioning why kids can't go to a regular college, rumors about having teachers come in to help, etc. In the past, it seemed like they only showed the positive comments praising them. I know a lady & her daughter do the blog but I wonder if the Duggars read it.

OMG- I didn't know this costs money!  AS IF?  Scratch that.  Maybe someone that lives in that town can catch MEchelle at a Starbucks getting a $6 coffee and defraud her.

Pricilla is the only female on earth who can upstage Michelle. When Pris opens her mouth, the entire contents of her brain come spilling out. For a surprisingly long time too. Considering. Even Michelle hangs back not to get covered in all that mess.

You are so right.  She is a freaking train wreck and so sickly annoying with the voice (I assume trying to become more like MEchelle).  Yea, what if the people have alcoholic or drug addicted horrible parents.  What should they do then Priscilla?  Share with them every day about what's in your so godly heart?   Please!  Stop preaching.  Go have another baby.  In case you didn't notice, your sister is two up on you.

I've always wondered if when they get in their "birth order line", MeChelle just shouts-or rather whisper-yells "Everybody in your birth order line!" And all the kids scramble to do so, like they're in school & lining up in alphabetical order or something.

From that article:

“Anyone can fix him lunch, but only one person can meet that physical need of love,” Michelle, who has 19 children explains. “You always need to be available when he calls.”

Is this ...serious? Like straight from the Duggar camp, not some satirical source? Because if so, barf. I mean, I'm all for a healthy sexual relationship, but I just don't understand this. They can't hug, but Michelle is okay advocating that it's okay for a woman to drop everything when her husband wants sex? Please.

Link to comment

Nope that is not made up I believe it is a Gothard thing to always be available for your man.

Sadly all these krazy rules come from a man who never got married but preferred to scout out young naive girls to play footsies with. Leaves you wondering what else the sicko did??

IIRC this was included in a list of things to keep your husband happy /how to treat your husband that Michelle gave Jill before the wedding. I think a friend "shared" this with Michele before her wedding. It may be on the Duggar Family blog but I don't feel like looking for it.

Going to the prayer closet because I'm posting this. Warning some hilarious observations made by Michael K the blogger behind D-Listed.

Michael K is awesome, his posts on the Kardashians are hilarious as well.

Kind of ironic that the holier-than-thou Duggars are sharing cover space with crackhead teen mom Jenelle and her second illegitimate kid.

Those statements, and more, are also found in this hilarious article:

Why the Duggars don't do Halloween: 19 Kids and Counting family believe that magic and witches are 'part of a demonic realm'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2768380/Why-Duggars-don-t-Halloween-19-Kids-Counting-family-believe-magic-witches-demonic-realm.html

It's unlikely the Duggars are starting to plan their Halloween costumes: The family has revealed that they don't celebrate the holiday due to religious reasons.
'Magic, sorcery, witches, spell-casting, and the like are all part of the demonic realm that God wants us to stay away from,' explain Jill, Jessa, Jana and Jinger in their book, Growing Up Duggar.
'One specific thing that our parents have always been careful about is magic, which often shows up in children's movies. As harmless as it may seem, it's not a joke in God's eyes,' the sisters add.

I guess they're not fans of American Horror Story? Their heads might truly explode.

I still would like to know from Michelle what marital advice HER OWN MOTHER gave her? She quotes from this "friend" as if she were already motherless. Isn't a mother supposed to be a close relationship? Even if not so close, when a daughter is going to marry, a parent steps up and has a talk with their offspring. I am under the distinct impression that Michelle carries on as if she were an orphan. She never mentions her family life before marriage. We know about the cheerleader stuff, that's her single social life activity. Nothing ever about her home experience with parents and siblings etc.

Also, there is absolutely NO reason that those kids couldn't have attended a Christian school in an actual classroom. They state that they want to keep a religious overtone in their education, well, isn't that what most church schools claim to do also? I'd like to hear from her on that one.

My take on it is that they are just too lazy to have to get up early and get all those kids fed, dressed and washed for a 9:00 classroom. Plain and simple. Michelle would then be left at home until 3:00 with the little kids who were too young for school....lazy woman.

Paying the tuition for private schooling would've been a concern before they were on the TLC money train, but in the Gothard world, don't they not believe in Sunday school? Children aren't to be separated from their parents, even in the house of the Lord, because you never know how they could be "influenced" in Sunday school or children's church while Mom and Dad aren't looking. So regular school five days a week, even a church-affiliated one, would be an even worse idea in their eyes. Though I guess if they go off for some Gothard training/program, that's totally different and therefore completely okay.

The truth is , if you really believe abortion is the same as murder, as the Holocaust, then you would have to do more than just your museums and post notes on social media about it, wouldn't you? I know I would.

Hah! This reminds me of Captain Von Trapp and his whistle in "The Sound of Music." We all know that Michelle 's speaking voice is much higher pitched than a whistle...

The Gothard crowd seems very big on this. They seem to think all men are two breaths away from succumbing to internet porn or straying to another woman if their desires aren't gratified as often as they like. I have no idea how they fit this in with self-control being one of the fruits of the Spirit.

My quotes aren't working right. Sorry!

Michelangelo Signorile from SiriusXM Progress (he's gay BTW) is at the VV14 summit and is tweeting about everything he sees. He hasn't encountered the Duggars but he did see the Benham Brothers whose show got cancelled when they said anti-LGBT stuff (the Duggars support them). Here's Mike's tweet about them. LOL too funny...such closet cases.

Benham Brothers twice told me I'm a "sharp" dresser as I interviewed them #ValuesVoterSummit

Regarding the Photo from the Summit: The first thing that jumped out at me is Michelle isnt wearing the denim skirt/tent. I guess its home for Grandma to launder. I'm surprised Boob isn't wearing a red shirt to match Michelle. Why do the little girls have to wear leggings under their long dresses? Who are they defrauding? I count 15 real Duggar children. Plus Anna, Ben & I think Mackynzie. Like Michelle, I cant keep track of the younger kids by name -I just call them "brother" or "sister". It looks like Josh (guess he was doing his own thing at the Summit),Jill (who I read was camping with Derick), John-Doofus & Joseph are missing. It looks like Josiah is there & back from Alert. Hope he's not just at the summit on a weekend pass. Where are the violins?

Link to comment

Josh was there. Why do they have to keep harping about their miracle child Josie? It drives me crazy how they use their youngest child to promote their anti-abortion spiel. Way to be classy Duggars. Ben is now part of the dog and pony show. I do not know if I should laugh or feel bad for him. And the kids are political experts because they worked on a few campaigns. Seriously...

Link to comment

Sorry guys - I just watched the Duggar speech at the Summit & realized Josh was with them but it looks like poor Josiah is still at Alert. Boobs speech - OMG! Him of all people talking about dealing with anger issues with your children. Yeah, Jim Boob, it was shown on national TV how you showed your anger with Josiah. Both on the baby announcement episode & the paint ball episode. Then he talked about training the children to serve others & explained how they have volunteered on several political campaigns. Hasn't every candidate they helped/endorsed lost? And the way MEchelle looked adoringly at him & added her "sweet" comments as he was speaking. When MEchelle asked the audience how many planned to have a family, I wish someone would have yelled "No, God has put it in my heart NOT to have children." And I almost forgot about the shout-out Boob gave Josie the Miracle child. Oh did you know today is Josh & Anna's anniversary? No we don't care Boob.

Love Michael K and DListed. That list of Duggar Daughter Dating Rules was ridiculous. And I had no idea they cc all their texts to Ma and Pa for approval. That's creepy. Just once I want someone to text one of the girls a dick pic. I bet JimBob would looooove that! Michelle too, probably.

The Halloween thing to me is just silly. I mean yes, hundreds of years ago Halloween was a Pagan holiday. But it's 2014 and that's not really the case anymore. In fact the same could be said about most of the major holidays we celebrate. So go get yourself a sexy nurse costume (or whatever) and go trick or treating. It might be fun and you're not slighting Jesus. I bet he loves Halloween. There are even some churches that do Halloween activities so I'm pretty sure a rubber mask isn't a ticket straight to hell. And if it is then I must have a whole section of seats waiting for me!!

If they did have a regular church, it might be one of the ones that have a "Harvest Festival" or "Trunk-or-Treat", where all the kids wear religious costumes (or definitely not ones inspired by the "occult") and get candy but it's totally different from Halloween because...yeah. And Easter is "Resurrection Sunday" and "Santa" is an anagram for Satan. Their beliefs about Halloween are shared by other, more mainstream Christians, too (not all or even the majority).

I would love to see a good novel/movie/TV drama about the Quiverfull/Gothard life, like you see about the Amish or FLDS, if there aren't any already. The nonfictional accounts are good but I wonder about the reach they have with people who aren't aware of the world. The Duggars themselves only seem to get kid-glove or "well, aren't they wacky!" treatment from the media at the worst and I think a fictional work going mainstream might change that.

The Duggars discussed (briefly) their views on Halloween in the episode "I Left My Duggar in San Francisco."  It's pretty hilarious to hear how Michelle tries to self-censor herself in mid-sentence when she realizes how screwball she sounds.  Oh, and then she and Boob go into a head shop and don't realize it.  Between those two things, this is one of my favorite episodes for a dose of Duggar Insanity.  :D

EDIT to add: I think it is also hilarious that Bin and Jessa will be getting married on Nov 1, since that is Samhain.

Oh, & I bet if they have a copy of the mag they have cut out Miranda Lambert's photo on the cover as she is in a bikini. Nike!

Do you think Jill & Jessa were allowed to look at wedding magazines? I was reading on their family blog site that people were shocked they would allow themselves to be on Us magazine (& even People). But others commented that they were the "good" that would turn the "bad" around that read the magazines.

I find it freakishly scary that the Duggars' groupies seriously think this family does things out of the goodness of their hearts and for the sole purpose of "encouraging others." Do they not realize that these people are paid a tidy sum to show up at conferences, churches, speaking engagements etc.? Do they think Jill mentioning all these random businesses associated with her wedding is nothing more than a kind gesture? It just amazes me how clueless people are when it comes to this family.

I'm not shocked because a lead cover story on a major gossip magazine had to fetch a pretty penny. I have no clue what they pay, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was close to $5k.

So I get home from work last night and turn on the news-there was a big apartment fire very close to where we live, and I wanted to see if there was a report. Instead, I was greeted by Michelle's face. Apparently they were in TN for a rally on an amendment we will be voting on soon. This is a state law, so why is a family from Arkansas speaking on a law that does not affect them?

I would guess more than $5K. I know that a decent (but not cover) story for a magazine like GLAMOUR or COSMO pays 2-5k for the writer alone. So I'd put it easily in the low five figure range including photos.
