The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

Unfortunately I am fairly certain at least one of them was one of the younger girls. If you read the police report, one of the girls was sitting with him on a chair while he read her a book that sounds like it's probably a young child's book. http://imgur.com/a/zqPMi#21

The four younger girls were not yet born in 2002. Joyanna was 5-ish, but the one on his lap still could have been Jinger, who was 8 or so. A little old to be on a lap, but maybe. This is all so terrible to think about. I agree that there should be no gloating, not when there are 5 victims to think about, but I do hope this will finally shut up the people claiming the Duggars are a model family. And I hope TLC reaches out and offers counseling to those that want it, like they did with Honey Boo Boo.

Absolutely. So many people are delighting in the downfall of the Duggars that they fail to realize it came at the expense of Jana, Jill, Jessa and Jinger's well being. It's awful to have something so hurtful and deeply personal served up as fodder for the public.

On one hand, I agree that it's unfair to the girls to divulge their names. On the other hand, a lot of people are probably feeling that the successes, the wealth, and the fame gained by the Duggar family comes at a price. The Duggar's have all benefited for years from their charade of humility and holiness and now it's time to pay their pound of flesh for all that came before this.

I'm thinking the TLC fall-out has begun -- I have Comcast, and on my channel line-up it has 19K&C scheduled for 3 half-hour eps. starting at noon (I'm on EST).  Just out of curiosity I checked to see if it's on.  Nope!  They're showing "The Little People", however, the channel guide still says "19K&C."  A mistake by Comcast?  Maybe, but I don't think so.

I doubt it is a mistake. I have Dish and they are showing The Little Couple. Channel guide still says 19 kids as what should be showing.

Right you are, kellylovessnark.  Next ep. of 19 kids is showing in guide, but it's another ep. of Little Couple.  I think we may have seen the last of 19 Kids.  It's ironic as I looked into future 19 kids shows on the line-up, and the next time it appears is this coming Wednesday @ 7:00 a.m. -- the title of the episode is "Duggars: All You Wanted To Know."  Yikes.  Doubt that one will air.  TLC apparently took a HUGE amount of flak for doing a 19 kids "marathon" at the exact time the scandal broke.

Yeah, gotta stop reading other boards. It's the leg humpers complaining about TLC pulling the show while continuing to run Sister Wives which in their view is more immoral. Aaargh! Does the concept of consenting adults ring a bell with these people?

Thank heavens for this board. It's a bastion of sanity.

I always wondered how that Sister Wives family avoided being charged with polygamy or bigamy or whatever that charge would be. But then again, consenting adults and all that. Maybe it's because only one of the marriages is "legal"?

But anyway that's a completely different situation.

Is "pulled" the same as "canceled," or will the same crowd who pulled Duck Dynasty's fat out of the fire attempt a similar feat with this show?   It wouldn't surprise me at all if TLC went ahead and started airing it again due to public outcry.

TLC sure knows how to pick them, first Honey Boo Boo & Momma June's pedophile boyfriend, & now a sexual molesting "Christian". Whose family is next on the schedule, "Boko Haram Knows Best"? how about a show about a British family, "Jimmy Savile Loves You". seriously TLC, stop.

Mama June from Honey Boo Boo threatening to sue because TLC is still airing 19 Kids and Counting

Okay I don't like June but good for her. I hope she does. People think child molesters are Old creepy guys but anyone can molest a child. Doesn't matter race, age, religion, gender. The duggars are getting a free pass due to their religion and status.

Don't forget they want the Kardashians off the air. You're right I need to stop reading their bullshit comments before I really get upset.

I don't care if three women want to have sex or a relationship with one man. They're all adults. The thumpers comparing molestation of a child to polygamy is two different things.

I hope not. The Jim Bob Michelle Anna and Josh along with tlc should be punished. They all knew but did nothing. I bet JB is shitting his pants right now panicking on what to do.

I don't know how many of you read Blind Gossip regularly like I do (shut up), but I just saw that their latest post is obviously about this situation and specifically about the fact that (they claim) the network was informed of the issue months ago and did nothing.

http://blindgossip.com/?p=71479

However it seems to indicate that the Oprah Show (assuming that is Show #2 that is referred to here) found out about the accusations a few MONTHS ago and turned them over to the network.  I thought the evidence was that Harpo knew about it in 2006---YEARS ago, not MONTHS.  So, that seems interesting.  Wonder if something new did happen recently that brought this all to the forefront again.  Unless Show #2 is referring to another show that I don't know about.  Were there other shows that the Duggars were trying to get on recently and were turned down for?

Yeah, you should go to the SW boards to discuss this at length, but the short version is that they have been investigated for bigamy, and a pending prosecution was what prompted their move from Salt Lake to Vegas a few years ago.

Not surprising about TLC knowing and doing nothing. They have a history of such behavior with at least one other show. TLC seems to match JB and Michelle in terms of greed and moral turpitude.

We'll never know whether the girls involved truly "forgave" Josh, or more importantly, if they still would have had the case been handled properly. The girls themselves don't know either. Because continuing to have to live with the parents and perpetrator brother sure feels like coercion to me, and I suspect they had no free will in terms of "forgiveness."

This very thing was discussed, at length, I recall on the TWOP boards. TLC had to know. But, no one knew they knew so, keep the gravy train rolling! Now the main stream media has the story so TLC feels compelled to act. I am sorry for all involved, but if you don't practice what you preach, don't preach! The Duggar parents put themselves out there, and put their minor children out there. I feel bad for the young kids, but........

TLC has stopped airing reruns, but have they stopped filming?

I was wondering about this too, but weren't they already done filming for this season anyway?  I read that here somewhere but I can't find it again.

I know nothing about the filming schedule, so I don't know if there is usually a break between seasons or when it is. When they're not filming, but should be is when I'll believe TLC is serious.

Let's try to keep this thread as a place to post media mentions of the subject and discussions about things like TLC and what they knew and how they're going to proceed with the show.  To discuss the actual events that went down in detail, please go to the Josh and Anna thread.

I've moved a bunch of posts to that thread.  Just makes sense to consolidate it in one place since it's basically the same conversation.  Thanks.

No, it's not the same thing. Pulling a show from the schedule simply means that for now, they are not airing any episodes of the show. The network is allowed to do that without actually canceling the show. Sometimes a show is pulled from the schedule for various reasons but it does not mean that the show is canceled. Canceling a show means ending production, which is different from a contractual viewpoint. For now, TLC has only said that they are pulling the show from the schedule. If they do cancel the show, I don't think it will be before the holiday weekend is over.

Thanks for the clarification.

TMZ is now reporting that TLC is assessing ways to keep the show on the air, in the belief that most advertisers will not bail and that support of the show's strong evangelical base has not wavered.  They may proceed without the child molester, but some feel his continued presence would not materially hurt the show.

We're reaching a point in this country where it won't be very long before these reality TV personalities are able to kill people and still keep their shows.

Hell, in some cases killing people means that a network will create a documentary mini series so you can tell your side of the story.

While I hope that this show gets canceled by TLC, I fear that this will end up being similar to what happened with Duck Dynasty (the fans and supporters will rally in the noisiest way possible to ensure that the show stays on the air - A&E's CEO was sent death threats when she suspended Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty). I'm sure there are people who will say it's not fair for the entire family to lose their income, but I hope the show is canceled so that these girls can try to deal with this in private without cameras in their faces. While I am not a Mama June fan, I can understand why she is angered by TLC's hypocrisy. They canceled her show pretty quickly after rumors of her reuniting with her sex offender boyfriend surfaced (and that was before her daughter said that she was molested by him ten years ago) so it's pretty ridiculous for TLC not to do the same with this show.

So extrapolating from that article, it becomes "The Duggars," Josh and Anna are never seen again, and that's supposed to fix it? Ma and Pa go back to groping each other and giving sanctimonious lectures about purity and how neat and special everything is...do they not understand that this entire show is built on sanctimony, implied judgment of others, and supposed family values? TLC...that bell can't be unrung.

Are fundamentalists such a desired demographic of television watchers and rabid consumers that this even makes sense for advertisers?

I guess they can fill it up with Hobby Lobby and Chik-a-filla ads?

THIS!!  The bottom line in a nutshell.  Thanks, oldernowiser.  This program, in any way, shape or form/spin-off, can never return to television.  I think in the coming days we'll start hearing a lot more about TLC's culpability in all of this.

Question. Has it been written anywhere, besides here, that he molested one of hIs sisters? I've seen the talk go from "a minor girl" to "could it have been one of his sisters?" to "josh molested one of his sisters" to "Josh molested Jxxxx". I've not seen it written in any other media exactly who he molested. Not defending him in any way, but it seems there are a flurry of unsubstantiated accusations flying around. I'm just looking for clarity.

The police report mentioned that most of the victims lived with their parents, Michelle and Jim Bob.

Wow! I missed that. Shit! Little perv. I can relate to adolescent urges, but not to touching someone, anyone without their knowledge or consent. No one taught me that, it was just part of my being, and not to say that everyone is like me, but what the fuck? How is what he did anyway gratifying for a normal person? They say "I am as God made me", uh no. They say those who are abused, abuse. I can not imagine what happened to Josh to twist him that way except that someone did that to him. And he has a daughter. I don't think being counseled by a soon to be convicted child pornographer and some hard labor have done much more than taught him to "suppress" these feelings. Can someone so fundamentally twisted ever become "normal"?

Since it's on the previous page, I'll post another reminder, most of the talk of the about the recent revelation of abuse is being discussed in the Josh and Anna topic. We're giving a wide, wide wide berth regarding staying on topic, and we're trying to hold the conversation there. Personal stories, talking about the entire family, the parents, the various religious aspects--all there. Links to media about it as well. Discussing Jim Boob and Mechelle and the other sisters and their families is also encouraged in their topics, but can be incorporated in a general post, too

In short, we understand it's a huge deal, and we're allowing wide latitude. We just ask that speculation not include names or graphic details. It's a horrible situation, let's give the victims the privacy the adults close to the situation didn't.

So please join the discussion so that many others can commiserate with you over in the Josh and Anna topic.

I think if people really want the show cancelled, the way to get that to happen is to express outrage directly to TLC. There was an example on another network of a personality acting heinously, but although public sentiment was largely against her on boards like this, not enough people contacted the network directly, so they ended up keeping her.

I just ran a post (and one that quoted it) by the mod group. I'm now deleting it because the tweet it contained is not from someone in the family or related to the show's production. Further, it would take the thread off-topic as members discuss the tweet rather than the current situation.

Tweets/Facebook posts/etc. about the Duggars do not need to be brought here unless they provide new information. We've got enough opinions and personal stories as it is. Other material would just add fuel to the fire, and the fire is plenty hot as it is.

Thanks for understanding.

My husband brought up a fascinating perspective today. We opened the newspaper and there were articles saying things like:, "Duggars Belong To Patriarchal Church", "Duggars Entangled with Politics", and "Shocking Family Secret". As DH pointed out, Josh's indiscretions and the nature of the Duggars religious and political views are only "shocking" if you were one of the leg bumpers with your fingers stuck in your ears. I have to agree. We know what Gothard's background was and knew there were sexual misconduct allegations. We know the Duggars ventured around the country mingling with presidential candidates and making robocalls. Josh worked for a PAC! How can the media pretend this is shocking? We know, from statistics, that 1/4 of all young girls have been sexually molested or physically abused. We know their guru predated on young girls. The only shocking part of this is that they managed to keep it quiet so long.
