The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

Charitygate?

http://radaronline.com/photos/duggar-reality-fakery-19-kids-and-counting-family-stages-charity-scene/photo/1044142/

That's Derrick's church's thrift store. I totally believe this article. it just sounds like something they'd do.

Have to agree. It does sound exactly like a future "plotline" was being filmed. And how pathetic is that too? Neither TLC nor the Duggars themselves can come up with anything better? That's actually genuine? Sorry, pitiful, lamentable, deplorable. This patient has been in a persistent vegetative state for far too long - time to pull the plug.

I am driving cross country and on one of the radio stations they were talking about the Duggars and they said they should change the title to 19 kids and counting 2.0 the next generation or Clown Car has been junked.

I said on the Josie seizure thread last night that I don't believe pretty much anything that comes out of a married Duggar/Seewald/Dullard's mouth, but that I still believed the kids. As someone else posted above: What does this kind of stunt tell those kids? It seems to me that modeling this kind of deception leads the kids to think that it's okay behavior.

Not that I ever thought much of the Duggars' "parenting," but this is especially shitty for those poor kids.

Agree. God knows how they explain this kind of thing to the younger kids, all the kids really - if they even do. But last I heard "Thou shalt not bear false witness..." was still one of the Ten Commandments. Guess Boob already has a snappy answer for that though, if anyone asks...

I find it hilarious that printed color posters were made. What did that cost? And their "mission" failed any way.

I've always said the Kardashians are like the Duggars. Fame-whores with a Momager.

I hope the kids turn it on the parents. "Yes daddy, I'm pure" "I never look at porn on my phone!" "I read the bible for two hours today". See how easy it is to lie? Kids learn what they see, and they see a lot.

I guess the good people of NW Arkansas are all "Duggared out".  Wonder how long the notice had been posted in the store window.  Nobody showed up??  That's funny.

We have seen these "Look at us, we are so charitable!" storylines before. Unless there is a courtship, engagement, wedding, birth, or medical emergency it seems no one is interested.  I'd like to think this is the beginning of the end for the show, but I can't count how many other mini scandals there have been with no detrimental effects, so I am not holding out much hope that this will be any different.

I would much rather be a Kardashian than a Duggar. I'm not going to wear ugly clothes and used shoes.

The days of used shoes are long gone for the Duggars.  All the females have several pairs of $150-$200 Uggs and other boots.  Jill wears Chaco sandals (when she choses to be a civilized adult and wear shoes) and has several pairs as well.  Jessa wore new boots and jackets in every scene of the European honeymoon episode.  Once you hit puberty and/or are courting, your Duggar shoe game improves.  Check out Josiah's dress shoes lately.

Yeah, you're definitely not one of the cool kids when you offer free stuff and still nobody shows up. How embarrassing. People probably fled the thrift store like they were running out of a burning building when the producers started wrangling shoppers to be free extras.

Instead they got a bunch of curious fans and a random bystander family to act the part.

Totally agreeing with everything Vaysh wrote. Only, you left out NO ONE got any food. The taking it back part clenched it with the ring of truth. That's just who the Duggars are, and how they roll. (The junk food part doesn't bother me - basically all food banks give junk/cheap food in one way or another.)

I'd like to email the church and ask them what it's like to be in bed with the Duggars and TLC. After the bad press will TLC even air the footage? they'd do better to drop it and just splice in someone packing for a trip or something.

Thanks for this link. The article cracked me up, especially these selections:

'The little girls flash a look like "You wanna step up to me?" But then before Josie could bite his leg like a tiny wolverine, Jim Bob and Derick go and talk about their feelings.'

Damnit, the girls are getting married. Not dying. Except for Jana's hopes.'

I agree, and you highlighted some parts that had me laugh out loud. Run away Jana, run away...

No, people did show up. The point of the article was that it was a publicity stunt not an actual charity event and that everyone who showed up was just there to ogle the Duggars, not to recieve food assistance.

Plus, the Duggars STILL managed to show up late.

Thank you - this was hilarious!

Dumbest question ever: Did young Josiah ask Marjorie to court him and NOT discuss it with Jim Boob and J-Chelle first?

I didn't think the men had to discuss it with their families - they just tell them. What did Josh do? Didn't he come home and announce he was going to ask Anna to marry him?

Michelle reminds me a lot of Kris Jenner. They're both desperate attention seeking narcissists trying to hold onto their youth by attaching themselves like remora to their pretty, famous daughters. Michelle doing Most Beautiful was like Kris crashing Kim's Playboy shoot. It's pathetic and hilarious at the same time.

I've always thought the Duggars were like the Kardashians. The Duggars may try to act pious and holier than thou, and the Kardashians act trashy, but they're from the same mold. A need to be on reality TV and a need to show off their children

You know Michelle is really missing out now that the olders are courtin', marrin', and birthin'. She says she spends her time booking and scheduling events for the family so she really should take her 10% like Moma K does. (Just kidding because we all know JB takes most of it so she doesn't need her 10%)

Is it me or os the careful facade that the Duggars have created for themselves slowly crumbling down. With catgate, the homophobia and everything coming to light, i'm sure the common viewers are starting to get turned off. This gravy train has about 2 years tops, unless one of the kids pulls a grand escape and TLC does a spin off called "Breaking Duggar".

(If this is off topic, uh, sorry. I have no clue where this would go)

Hey, be fair! The article mentions that the bags were filled with junk food. Maybe Mr. and Mrs. Martinez were all, "Thanks, but we don't want your tater tot casserole." (Or whatever the pre-packaged equivalent was.)

Maybe the Martinez family was in need of paper plates and plastic dinnerware. The Duggar's seem to have an eternal, never-ending supply of those.

A lot of the things are coming out because of the different adult kids' social media. When it was just the Duggar TLC site and that one that is run by approved fans that the Duggars slipped some items to there was some to snark on but little to blow up like catgate. They just post so much more then they used to and it doesn't go through anyone with media training that will catch something that could be taken in a negative way.

It's funny, because JB and J'chelle have been so careful of their image, and so cautious about the facade they present. I have had bad experiences with evangelical Christians in the past, and was initially impressed by the fact that the Duggars said "this is what we do," or "this is what we believe, and we respect the right of others to have their own beliefs."

Now, their kids are busy posting and tweeting the stuff that they actually believe -- and have been drilling into their kids' heads for 20+ years. They are the same sort of rigid, anger-filled zealots that I have dealt with all my life. They have no respect for the beliefs of others, and no tolerance for people who disagree with them, and it is their own children who have so thoroughly and completely outed them.

Thus far, I'm not convinced that they have done anything that someone who really likes them is going to see as a big deal. That no one showed up for food and they invented something? I think most people will think, "well, isn't it great that people in NW Arkansas aren't in need of food?"

They don't think anything they do will be seen in a negative way.   After all for far too many years, they ahve been fawned over and told how wonderful they are.  When you are told that enough, you start to believe it.   So they really don't get that aiming a sled at a cat, or showing up with boxes of junk food to fake give away might be seen badly in any way.    They are doing it ergo the fans will love it.

It's much like Jamesis Winston posting a picture of him eating crab legs after being drafted #1.   HE thought he was just thanking a friend (so he said), what the world saw was a huge "Fuck you, I can do what I want because I was drafted #1"   Same thing here.   The Duggars see themselves as having fun sledding as a family.   The rest of the world saw animal cruelty and stupidity on display.   The Duggars wanted an episode for their show where they are giving out food to family in need.   The rest of the world saw fakery fake fake with junk food.

No, Michelle will change genders. The way Jenner explained it was that as a kid she channeled everything into athletics to prove she was masculine in an attempt to quiet his female soul. Perhaps Michelle pushes herself to be super-birther to challenge her own transgender feelings. Could explain why she doesn't help raise her children.

Michelle could strangle a puppy on live TV and the fans would marvel that she has time to do her nails and parent all those kids.

This showed up in my facebook timeline. (I keep my morbid Duggar fascination a secret, so at first I was afraid I'd clicked a "like" somewhere that I shouldn't.) I'm amazed that Josh can sincerely believe the word salad he's tossing out here. How can anyone genuinely think that being prevented from denying rights you enjoy to other people is discriminatory. That said, the disingenuous spin makes the whole thing that much more deplorable.

Now that the new royal princess has arrived, do you think perhaps the Duggar media train might derail a bit?  And the Kardashian one, too?

Dear God in Heaven, I hope so...

Smuggar is indeed disgusting. Not only in what he says, but it's so clear he isn't even writing this dreck himself. In general, people tend to write in the same overall manner as they speak - especially the way they speak in public. But with Josh Duggar, you get college speeches from a middle-school talker. So very lame...

Dear God in Heaven, I hope so...

As an experiment I went to the People home page just now and found many links to the royal baby story, no links to anything Kardy, and one link to a Duggar story (the recent engagement announcement).

The Duchess sure rocks the post-birth look - dress was almost as pretty as that little girl!

I notice there's slightly more worldwide media interest in Baby Cambridge than in Baby Dillard... btw, I looked _exactly_ like that, ten hours after giving birth. How about you all?

Josh's words of wisdom remind me of this political cartoon:

It's sad, I don't think Josh came off as this smug in the earlier documentaries. But now it's like he's the very definition of "Backpfeifengesicht" (German for "face begging to be punched")

Wow! German has words for everything.

Ahem - topic -  I do hope the new royal baby gets the Duggars off of People. It's making the kids who have bought in (and achieved their life's purpose by getting pregnant before they've been married a year) so much more insufferable, as well as trapping the kids who want out even more than they already were.

The difference is that except for the royal birth which will occupy the media for some time, the royals arent begging for media coverage like the kardashians & the Duggars. But at least it's knocking the Duggars off the cover story for now, & I'm happy about that.

My ds1 told me that one of his band friends is at a Baptist church where the Duggars are performing (violins & a cello?). Then the duggars are going to do a Q & A afterwards.his friend said it is being live- streamed (to who?)

I asked Ds if his friend had long hair (no) or wore skirts (he said she usually wore short jean shorts). So not a very strict Baptist church obviously.

I'm offended that the Duggars continue to butcher two of my favorite musical instruments with their screechy "music." Hmph.
