Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

The Politics Policy is still in effect. A participants social media is NOT an invitation to discuss their political view points. Consider if discussion of certain social media posts will cause you to violate the politics policy BEFORE you hit the "Submit Reply" button.

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

I used to have a Far Side t shirt that read, "God at his computer," with his finger hovering over the smite button.  Do you think the Duggars would wear that?

I don't know about the Duggars, but I would wear the hell out of that shirt.

I have that on a tote. So keeping it relevant.......is Shakespeare considered compatible with the ATI curriculum? It is sort of KJV language, so that may make any bawdiness or commandment breaking OK, or do they consider classic Lit totally useless.

Ha. There are a LOT of scriptural references in Shakespeare. . . but then again, there's a whole lot of bawdiness. And as others noted upthread, Shakespeare is way too literary!

Among many other things, I would love a straight answer from them on literature. We have so many ideas based on what we've seen on the show and what we know of ATI/gothard, but I'd love to hear how they characterize the types of books they read, if any,  and how it fits into their family and schooling. I'm sure we all know the answer, but I'd love to hear it from them,  if they feel they are great readers due to the wisdom booklets, or would openly state They don't find much use for literature.

I'm curious whether jing's recent post about loving books now that she loves Jeremy really meant she had just discovered a love of books, or if she was just trying to be cute with her phrasing.

My son got me this Shakespeare shirt, which I adore.

Even if they weren't so dumb and uneducated, I think the Duggars would be much too naive to get any of the ribaldly in Shakespeare. I had a "normal church girl" upbringing, and the dirty stuff flew over my head in junior high and even, to a large extent, in high school.

Oh that reminds me.... English major here. I have a "Shakespeare's Insults" tee. That one also gets some funny reactions from fellow Lit geeks.

Oh my God, how was my life complete without knowing Shakespearean insults?  I just gioogled a DIY version.  My favorites:

Thou Beslubbering Bat-Fouling Bum-Bailey

Thou Gorbellied Unchin-Snouted Boar-Pig

I've been resisting my inner 12 year old not to make "beast with two backs" references. ?

Duggars in general: Highly fed (of carbs), lowly taught.

Ben: Not so much brain as earwax

A fusty nut with no kernel

Boob: Lump of foul deformity

Elvish-marke'd, abortive, rotting hog

Derelict: All eyes and no sight

Gothard: Idol of idiot-worshippers

Ok, I googled too:

“Away, you three-inch fool! “

“A most notable coward, an infinite and endless liar, an hourly promise breaker, the owner of no one good quality.”

"I am sick when I do look on thee “

"If thou wilt needs marry, marry a fool; for wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them.”

“My wife’s a hobby horse!”

"There’s no more faith in thee than in a stewed prune.”

“Thou art unfit for any place but hell.”

Shakespeare predicted the Duggars perfectly!

I hate the "is she/isn't she," but that's a pretty roomy shirt for a girl who likes to look in the mirror a lot.

If it is the case, well, we know Erin is very fertile. Can they continue the heparin, though? Chad works for a small company in a very red state. I don't know how much his insurance can bear.

If Erin IS pregnant, I wish her nothing but the best, but damn, this can't go on forever.

Didn't she say it was "for a while?" A "while" for her may not be how we regular people define it. She loves her some modestly form-fitting clothes, and there is no waist on that dress. Erin is too conscious to those details to ignore her modestly hot mom body. Sorry Erin, Whitney is winning THAT race. She CRUSHES the Duggar girls.

I am in the minority and don't think she looks pregnant at all to me. I think she looks really nice! I just ate a giant gyro and look way more pregnant than she does LOL

I did scroll through the comments and someone asked and she said no.

These people are all starting to look alike. It's sort of scary, but with all the intermarrying, it's bound to happen.

I don't think she looks pregnant, either. She always was on the petite, but rounder/plumper side, she's had two babies, and probably doesn't do anything at all to work out. She'll be as round as she is tall before she's 40.

I don't think Erin is fat at all. She just generally wears stuff that's more tailored. That's all.

I don't think she's fat, either. She's just never been slim/slender. She's a petite framed, curvy girl, who has had two babies recently. She's never had washboard abs and never will.

She's very pretty.  I wouldn't call her fat, and I thought her husband kind of looked like Kendra's dad.

Or so sadly isolated they don't get cultural references? Damn, I thought Jinger admiring the cream before coffee, and Joy thinking opening a baked potato is genius were bad enough.  :) My ten year old is mastering the technique, with thick, heat resistant gloves, just because.

It's terrible to be asked if you are pregnant, when you're not. All you hear is 'you're fat.'

For normal people, yes, it's a horribly rude and intrusive question.  I rarely ask this question, but if I do it's to a person with an obvious late third trimester pregnancy.

But it's fair game, IMO, to these pregnancy obsessed folks.  They egg it on by manipulating announcements for storyline purposes.   I do hope they lay off Michaela now that it's clear she's having difficulties.

****"They" includes all of the people in this cult.

I scrolled through Erin's Insta pics. She was pretty slim just a few months after having Brooklyn. In the latest pics she's wearing loose fitting clothing. Maybe she is. Yikes!

That's why I think she's pregnant even if she's not admitting it.

I hate to admit it, but I'm not that much older than Erin and I didn't think of Springsteen.  If you're born after the song (thanks google) and your parents aren't Springsteen fans , it may not be as obvious/a generational thing. Of course after you said it, I exactly knew what you're talking about.

I've never been mistaken and think it's in fact a distinct-looking condition/carrying pattern once a belly shows to the point where I'd even think of asking; and feel like a lot of people are, well, not to put too fine a point on it, stupid.  A coworker once told me dolorously not to go about asking women "when are you due?", clearly speaking from experience; and I thought "Well, yeah, [coworker's name], but I'm not stupid and wouldn't say it in the first place.  But considering "pregnant women" generally look like they have some round piece of sporting equipment bolted onto them somewhere; I know what my fat rolls look like when arranged in clothes; and thus generally when I see similar on other women".

Did Erin labor on camera for her second?  I saw her first and found it a little disturbing. It was like watching a five year old in labor - crying, looking at her mother to save her, and utterly confused as to what was happening to her.

Didn't Erin have a placental abruption with Carson? I just remember it wasn't a normal labor, it lasted roughly four hours from her water breaking to delivery and she had nonstop contractions. I agree it was disturbing, she was crying and begging everyone to help her.

They filmed her labor with Brooklyn and, with an epidural, she made it look easy. I wouldn't be surprised if she had the help of was UPTv editing faeries, but the process was a lot less intense than Carson's birth.

Hopefully, they have a family planning method down.  I believed them when they said Brooklyn was a surprise.  It seems like Russian roulette with her and the baby's health.

Bringing up Bates just did a 'Newlywed Game" with the married kids. I can only remember that Alyssa wants six. They graciously either did not ask, or edited out, Michael for this question. Erin and Chad were asked, however they did not show (or I missed) their answer.

I thought I recalled Erin's labor with Carson being only two hours, but two intense as hell hours.  I'm glad she got her epidural for Brooklyn. Whitney also had medicated births, IIRC. Alyssa? Not so sure. Her birthing center won't allow film crews beyond the waiting room, not to mention Alyssa herself only allowed John in the room with her. I snickered when they showed Gil and Kelly relegated to said waiting room with the film crew.

Erin said something like not 19, not 18, not 17, not even teens at all.

She also said, how can you know how many children you will have?  (Leaving it up to God and so forth)

ETA:  I bet there are more than a few fundy families where God has a little help limiting family size.  They don't all have a dozen or so kids.

So was I. ?

I was at the very end while awaiting emergency C-section.   I had been induced (2 weeks past due date) and was on ever increasing amounts of Pitocin.  The anesthesiologist came by and offered me another epidural because she was leaving for her lunch hour and didn't want it to wear off while she was gone.   I was an idiot because I was already pushing and thought pffft - I got this, it's almost over!!   Dumbest thing I ever did.  Epidural wore off while I was in hallway awaiting surgery team and they had left the Pitocin running.  I truly thought I was going to die.  I became the biggest baby ever - begging for someone to please help me.

I guess I was as arrogant as Jill, thinking I knew better than the medical team.   How embarrassing!

Perhaps that's a regional thing?  Where I live, young & old know about Bruce & his music.
