Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

This is me.  In the aftermath of the US election I was turning to the major news networks constantly - and checking my more local news outlets constantly for Covid updates.  As if there was going to be anything significantly new 5 minutes after I last checked.  Eventually I realized (duh) that a lot of my stress and anxiety could be tied to turning to the news constantly!!  There is no way I would describe what I was watching as fake news but it wasn't exactly new  news either.  Taking a major step back from all news outlets was a huge help for me in getting through the balance of 2020 relatively calm.  Relatively.

My opinion is this is more than a pet peeve and a major problem for all of us.

I used to be on 3 message boards I posted to regularly.  This one, one for sports and one for just general politics and stuff.

I realized the sports one and the general politics were just stressing me out and making me crazy.  it wasn't helpful.  I cut back to just this one.  Whole lot more time, not wasting time at work, focus on important things.

Also I pretty much stopped posting anything political on social media.  Once in a while I will, but getting into arguments with 'friends' or family on facebook, etc goes nowhere, waste of time.  I am on facebook, but ignore the politics mostly.

I am not ignorant or ignoring things or current events.  Its just the news programs and social media are designed to get a response of some type, good or bad.  they play on emotions, not facts.  Most all of them do it.  They are sensationalistic and want clicks and likes and even dislikes and responses.  Its how its built.  ANd none of it is a healthy way to digest important information.  The news IS stressful.  They strive to create that stress and controversy.

Well this is my opinion but the reason the news is stressful to watch is because things that are happening in this country are very stressful. The pandemic, the aftermath of the election, etc. No matter which side of the political spectrum you're on it's stressful.

My wife leaves her inbox full of old emails.  Hundreds of them.  It doesn't really drive me crazy because I don't have to look at it, but just thinking about it makes ME a bit stressed.  DELETE SOME!  its not that she ignores them, she peruses and reads the important ones...... but then leaves them.

AHHHHHH.......DELETE, DELETE, DELETE, DELETE!!!!  Or save to a different folder if needed.

it would drive me crazy to know all those are in there.

My husband’s office/hangout is always a mess. Papers scattered everywhere, post-it notes on the floor, tangled cords, etc. It makes me physically uncomfortable to be in the room. I only go in to visit the cats (they sometimes hang out in there). The only time I say anything is when he leaves coffee cups or snacks in there. As much as I hate it, since I don’t have to look at I figure it’s his problem. The common areas of the house are a different story.

Oh absolutely agree but I can't control the news being stressful, I can control how often I get stressed by watching (or reading) the news.  Cutting back to once in awhile made a huge difference compared to clicking on news sites every 5 minutes!!

I've taken to shutting off news feeds early in the evening. It makes it much easier for me have more time to clear my head and get to sleep later at night.

I won't get into the details, but I did pickup a tv and it will probably be going back.   I can't get a signal on it, and I have been going through all of the troubleshooting bullshit online, which is absolutely useless.  I m not a complete idiot.  I think their instructions are garbage.  Plus I had to mute the damn thing, because the woman's obnoxious voice was driving me nuts.   Yes, it has a voice tutorial..  The tv remote needs a middle finger button.

My setup was sort of OK but yes that voice assist is annoying.  Thankfully I was able to find the off switch for it.  The reviews I read for this TV had a lot of complaints about it.  Scanning the channels worked differently than I thought it should though I got it working.
Good luck in your search, I hope you find a good set soon.

Car speaker phones: If one has speaker phones inside one's car, one does not need to have them blasted LOUD so that neighboring cars with their windows and your windows each rolled up  think your car is about to announce some evacuation order instead of broadcasting half of an inane and dull convo that no one else would have any interest in.  Seriously, if you can't hear the other person's convo, get thee to a hearing specialist but don't blast the convo so loud that you and everyone else on the road risks getting deafened by it!

Maybe I missed something, or maybe it's just an "it's-the-principle-of-the-thing" thing, but if there's a smart-tv that otherwise fits the bill for size, price, features, etc. - it's still usable as a tv.  You don't have to connect it to the internet.  You can still connect your antenna, cable, dvd player, whatever.  Maybe one day you'll want to use the "smart" features like streaming, but until and unless you set it up with an internet connection, it's still a plain old dumb tv.

There is someone next door to us that just has to talk on their cell in the backyard which is a few yards from our bedroom window. She simply must yell at the top of her lungs each time. I don't know why she insists on doing this.

Pet Peeve:   I’m disgusted with this virus shit.  Now, there’s another from England?  That’s worse?  I’m going out of my mind.  Too much reading, t.v., cooking, sleeping.  Now I’m afraid to go to the supermarket, so I ordered on line today and picking up tomorrow.  It’s too cold to go out here in the east coast, and windy.  Where to go?  I used to spend hours in Barnes & Noble or the library.  Now nothing.  It’s creepy.  And aggravating.  And scary.   I’m going to have another brownie.

Yeah well, this asshole has been lifting weights next door to me.   Our condos are connected, so his bedroom wall is my bedroom wall.  Every time he puts the weights down, there’s a Big Bang.  One night, I banged my fist in the wall, so he stopped.  Now, his dog barks every morning at 7:10 when he leaves.  I told him he’s waking us up.  Now, he doesn’t look at us.  Why can’t some people have a little consideration?  I don’t even want to say what we hear when his girlfriend sleeps over.

I put my son’s 32 inch t.v. On one of my wooden flat snack trays in the corner.  Perfect.  Any little table without sides will do.  How about one of those round tables that you screw three legs on and put a tablecloth on?  Inexpensive at Walmart or any store.

Peeve: The Weather Channel's "Local on the 8s" is now the "Local on the 8s Maybe." And I don't consider the tiny crawl info across the bottom of the screen to be an acceptable substitute. It's far too small for someone who doesn't have (or want) a TV the size of an aircraft carrier.

I’m sorry you are having that problem.  I swear, in my next life I want a husband that knows everything about fixing things.  My husband can’t put a nail in the wall, but he goes to the store ten times a day if I ask.  Between the t.v’s phone, I pad, computers, I phone I know zilch.  My two son in laws know everything, but I won’t bother them.  They have their own stuff.  Everything today is just so complicated and frustrating with all these gadgets.  I know nothing about smart TVs or phones or dumb TVs and phones, lol. I just want to turn things on.   One time I called “Geek Squad” from Best Buy to set up my stereo system.  It cost me $100.  Another time, a poster told me to get a “ Firestick” from Amazon to connect to my old dumb t.v., so I could watch Netflix.  It never ends.

I tried to expand our cable tv package so I could get TCM again. Comcast's website is an utter pile of shit so I tried calling. After wading through their terrible numbers of "press this for that" for twenty minutes, I got disconnected, twice. I was trying to give them more money and I guess they don't want it.

I’d be dead without Turner Classics.  It’s the only decent channel on.  I’m watching the last episode of Orange County now.  What a shit show.  They are all crying about something and wearing hats in the house.  Guess they couldn’t get their hair done, lol.  Their nails were done tho.  I hope they cancel next season.  Btw, customer service SUCKS wherever you call.  Nobody cares anymore.

Having to call customer service is a nightmare.  You have to work through a maze of menu options, none of which addresses your issue, and if you finally work your way to speak to a human, you have to try to explain something to someone who barely speaks English.  Customer service has become the absolute minimum a company can get away with providing.

That's because it no longer exists.  'Customer Service' is a myth; a legend of a different time.  Everything has pretty much become self-service.  "Here's your stuff, go to the website and figure out how to use it/install it."  "Here's your $300 widget...owner's manual?  No, there is no owner's manual included...you have to log on to www.gofuckyourself.com and learn how to use it/install it."  If you have a problem, call our tech support line at 800.FUC.KOFF and our technician who may or may not (probably not) speak your native language will proceed to go through a script reading session which will make you want to stab your own carotid artery.

Regarding Comcast I had it for a few years up until 2018 when Verizon was made available in my area.  Since I already had their phone and Internet plans I stuck with them to get the TV instead of bundling with Comcast.  When it came time to cancel Comcast I called the number on their website and got someone pretty quickly.  It didn’t take too long.  Maybe I was lucky.  When I went to drop off the converter boxes the next day the guy asked me why I terminated their service and I told them I got Verizon.  He told me I’d be back.  I don’t think so.  If I terminate the TV with Verizon I’m not going back to Comcast, I’ll find some streaming alternative or go with over the air TV.
Anyway, I’m happy with Verizon in general.  I watch TCM from time to time so I figured I would have lost it along with everyone else if I stayed with Comcast.  I’d miss it if it were gone.  Verizon has it in a bunch of tiers so there’s not much chance of me losing it (I hope) and be forced in to changing my package.  The only issue I have with Verizon and TCM is they don’t offer the HD version like Comcast does.

Calling customer service to change anything about your account is like buying a car.  You are forced to go through "the dance".  At the end of it all you will pay exactly what they intended you to pay when you initiated the whole thing but they will act like they are doing you some huge favour that takes hours of their time to research and negotiate.  So frustrating.

We moved out of Ottawa last year and lost TCM with the change in cable service.  None of the movie channels they offer now is even remotely comparable.  I used to complain about Rogers (I guess we always complain about whoever our current cable provider happens to be) but they are so much better than the service we have now!  Which I could forgive a lot if at least we could get TCM!

Baby talk/phony voices in general.

Not saying you should speak to babies/pets like they're adults, but the people who get extra with it. And then women who do that fake high-pitched voice. There's a femininity YouTuber I really like, but her fake voice is annoying. Her natural voice is perfectly pretty, but I guess she thinks the high-pitched voice is more feminine or something. (She kind of goes back and forth between her normal voice and trying to sound like a Disney princess.)

These big networks just blab, blab, blab.  They don’t care about us or what they say.  They are getting loads of money for being on and now writing books too.  It’s all about MONEY that they are making.  Parino on Fox is writing a book entitled “ It’s going to be o.k.”   Is she an authority on what’s going to happen in the future?  She’s on like three times a day making millions.  It’s just comical.  Go retire already and play with your dog.

I cut my ties to cable and satellite TV early in 2020 and I'm happy to have them in my rear view mirror!  The total I pay for streaming services is less than I ever paid for cable (Time Warner/Spectrum) and about what I paid for DirecTV, but mostly hassle free for the stuff I choose.  I have Netflix, Amazon Prime and for the British stuff I love, Acorn and BritBox.  For live broadcast channels and the cable channels I want, including TCM plus cloud storage DVR and FX stuff like What We Do In The Shadows, I have Hulu.

I hesitated for a long time.  I didn't want to spend a lot of time finding things to watch and having to navigate each streaming service.  I did free trail periods with a few that were a pain in the ass to navigate and I didn't select them.  As far as finding things to watch, it's simple.  Periodically I spend some time browsing what's available and mark them in my watch lists and as far as navigating, it just takes a little time to learn the process and quirks of each one.  I am so glad to be free of cable and satellite! 😁

I recently got tired of the crappy service I was getting from Spectrum (internet going out a couple of times a day, cable working maybe one day in 10, etc.) and switched over to AT&T. Had some problems getting the new internet to work, so they sent out a tech who discovered their equipment outside my house was broken, so it was a relatively quick fix once the tech got there. What I hate about dealing with customer service with any cable/internet provider is their immediate assumption that the problem is your fault: you didn’t set things up correctly, you unplugged something you shouldn’t have, etc.

Things I miss about customer service from a few years ago: a cable tech from a regional cable company who was honest enough to tell me that the service problems I was having were caused by crappy equipment that the company had bought a couple of years prior. He replaced the old model with a newer model from a different manufacturer, and problem solved. Then it also used to be that if I did an online chat with my cell phone provider, they would not only fix the issue, but proactively look at my plan and inform me that because of my longevity as a customer, they could offer me a cheaper rate for my existing plan. It wasn’t an offer to lower my rate if I added other services; it was a legit offer to just reduce my monthly bill, and sure enough, the next bill would be lower than the previous one. I’m not seeing that kind of customer service anymore. Sure, if I ask about other plans, they will review my usage and possibly recommend a different plan that better suits my situation, but they are no longer proactive about it.

I have YouTube TV - I can tag as many shows as I want, and it will record them. Also, a lot of stuff is available as On Demand, so I don't necessarily have to tag it ahead of time. I think most streaming services are like that.

I just started a subscription to BritBox through the BritBox website. And then I discovered that if you subscribe through the BritBox website, Amazon doesn't care. You can't then sign into on Amazon Prime even though you have Prime. You have to get a subscription through Amazon Prime. (That's my peeve for yesterday and today.) I decided to stick with the way I got it and just get the channel on our Roku for watching on the TV and watch it on the BritBox website when I'm at the computer.

I have Amazon Prime and BritBox separately and watch them through Roku. I had BritBox first.

You don't need a smart TV.  I do have one smart TV, but use Roku on the others.  Simple little gadget.

I watched the first season.  It's a bit too Romance for me.

Yeah .. it did get a little sappy, and season 2 was a little boring.  They dragged it out.  Reminded me of Hallmark.  I wish they had something like Downtown Abby, my all time favorite.  My husband and I watched it twice, and he doesn’t like too much.  He even liked Doc Martin.
