Evalina January 6, 2015 Share January 6, 2015 We all know Kody is so incredibly in love with himself. This little fact shines through, not only on tv but also in the book. Here are some examples: When Kody first met Robyn at her cousin's house. “Eventually Kody noticed that I wasn’t part of the small crowd that had gathered around him. So he turned to me and said, “And who is your husband?” -Robyn. I guess Kody always makes himself the center of attention? Later, they meet again at a "church dance". Meri convinces Kody to dance with Robyn. He's smitten. And he's upset that Robyn doesn't seem to be as into him as he expected her to be, as she didn't show up at church the next morning... "“Robyn was nowhere to be found. I was crestfallen. I was certain that she was as interested in me as I was in her. It seemed impossible to me that she wouldn’t have attended my congregation in the hopes of seeing me again" Wow! But this next one is even better... He corners Robyn's cousin, Reba, and...... "“I was simply convinced that she was as smitten with me as I was with her. So I went up to Reba and said, “Maybe you should call Robyn and ask her who she’s thinking about right now.” Reba looked baffled” Hahaha!!!! This guy is too much..... 4 11 Link to comment
purpleflowers January 6, 2015 Share January 6, 2015 LOL! classic. Here's a real zinger: Kody: "So it felt proper that Janelle should make the official opening move. In many ways, it's more appropriate. After all, I was a married man. I should not be making moves on women. That would defile my relationship with Meri." Oh boy! So Janelle making the first move doesn't "defile" the relationship? So many inconsistencies with this family too. I swear Kody said in a TH on the show that HE was the one who said that he and Janelle should consider becoming a couple. 3 Link to comment
Evalina January 6, 2015 Author Share January 6, 2015 Yeah I remember him saying both those things in the book. Like when they were having lunch or something, and Janelle was telling him about a guy she was dating, and he thought to himself, "oh no, she needs to be with...... A guy like me". RedheadZombie January 7, 2015 Share January 7, 2015 This is going off of the Browns discussing their book: Kody wasn't attracted to Christine at first, and describes a scene in the book which was very hurtful for Christine to read. Kody was initially disgusted by the fact that Robyn was divorced and had kids. 1 Link to comment

They lived together for only six months. After the split, Janelle remained close with Adam and Meri's family. She doesn't say what happened with the marriage, just that he had little spiritual comviction. It must make family gatherings interesting, no? 4 Link to comment

purpleflowers January 14, 2015 Share January 14, 2015 (edited) Embarrassingly enough, I do own the book. Christine doesn't go into a lot of detail about her parents except to mention that her mother Ruth DID leave their faith after divorcing her father. Her mother Ruth did not attend Christine's wedding ceremony. Christine also says her inspiration for wanting to be a sisterwife was her grandmother. Everybody was chasing me in order to pay me back. But they couldn't catch me. In the middle of all this, I heard Christine cry out, "Kody, my masculine man!" 4 5 Link to comment

First, who talks like that unless it was snark? Second, who remembers it and/or quotes it? There are days when I think this is all a wild overreaction to Kody being trapped in the closet by his religious beliefs and all of this is, "See how NOT GAY I am? I have four wives! Sooo not gay! I have 17 kids! Even less gay!!! NOT GAY NOT GAY NOT GAY!!!" I almost start to feel bad for him...and then he says/does something and I'm over it. 19 Link to comment

suomi March 28, 2019 Share March 28, 2019 Bumping this thread because the last activity is 4 years old and more people might have the book by now or thoughts or questions about it. Kody didn't let the wives get used to the lifestyle at a comfortable pace. He knew very little about how to navigate plural life. He got advice from "the elders," most of whom were Meri"s family. Would that tend to work in someone's favor? You decide. But also, his early decisions show what a total asshat he was, such as he and Janelle planning for their wedding to happen On Meri's Birthday! Meri was going along to get along but his mother saw what a difficult situation it was and intervened so the date was moved to the day after her birthday. All religions teach the Golden Rule - Kody never considered how he would feel if Meri took another husband On His Birthday? 1 2 1 8 Link to comment

How many and are they all still together? I remember Kody talking about when he was converting he and Meri's Dad had lots of "livin the principle" talks and he mentions Meri's Dad having 5 wives. When Meri talks about her mother and siblings she only really talks about her bio mum and her bio siblings. That may be due to the fact that the others do not want to be mentioned on the show. We see Janelle's mum off and on in the very background on the show and I think there was a hint that she either lives with Janelle or has extended stays with her in the winter. I'm sure Vegas winters are better than Wyoming. I wonder if that will continue now that they have a colder climate in Flagstaff. When Robyn talks about her parents (bio mum and stepdad) she only really talks about them as a couple, not as a sister wife kind of relationship. Again that may be because the other doesn't want mentioned in any way on the show. What I find most interesting is that they have talked on the show about the wives relationships as if they are just an old lady wives girl club after the kids are gone, but yet in all of the extended families this doesn't seem to be the norm. Meri's mum is now at the B&B, not living in a love commune with the 4 other wives, the other wives' mothers aren't discussed much but they all seem to devote their older years to their own children, not the extended brood. Honestly I can see Janelle following Maddie where ever she goes vs. living in Kody's giant house once it's empty. They sure aren't selling this great and wonderful lifestyle the way they think they are. 14 Link to comment

I don't have an issue with the moms not living together, and going where their bio children go - the test for me would be, do they keep in touch at all? Do they have any kind of relationship with each other, or with the children of the other wives? Then again, monogamous couples have issues too, and many people don't even get along with their blood relatives. Talk shows are full of sisters who don't talk to each other, kids estranged from their parents, etc etc - human relationships are very complicated and diverse. Polygamy brings its own set of issues and complications, but let's not fool ourselves - there's lots of trouble in paradise between blood relatives and in monogamous relationships too. 7 Link to comment

If they’re not doing any better than monogamists (which they’re not), then why be plygs? (Rhetorical question.) A person can have fantastic relationships in a sisterly sense where they look out for and support each other, without the requirement of being married to the same man. Exactly, it's all the BS surrounding their proclamations that bug me. Why was Meri so lonely and distraught... According to them that's one of the many benefits of having sister wives.... You always have a loving sister to go to with your woes. We've seen that that isn't the case because when Christine went to Meri it was painful to watch how dismissive and smug Meri acted... She was enjoying Christine's suffering and basically told her to try harder and be sweeter to Kody like it was all Christine's fault. Ugh! I loved it when it was Meri's turn at the bottom of the pile and Christine rubbed it in.... Saying how she brings a lot of baggage and just sat there staring at Meri like... ya bitch how's it feel to be sad and outside the circle? 1 7 Link to comment
suomi February 27, 2020 Share February 27, 2020 Robyn She-Rah: Quote The aftermath of my marriage left me feeling vulnerable and used, as well as exposed and helpless. I felt betrayed. I needed to regain my confidence and my inner strength, to ensure that I would never be mistreated again. It took me awhile to realize that the only person I could rely on to protect me was myself. When I discovered this, I invented an alter ego who became my protector. Her name was She-Rah and she represented my tougher, bolder side. Since no one would come to my rescue, I transformed part of me into my own superhero. After my divorce was finalized and I was functioning as a single mom, I went to visit my cousin Reba in Lehi, Utah. I hadn't been there in a while and I was looking forward to a change of community. On Sunday, Reba and I went to church. While we were seated in the service, a man sitting in front of me with shaggy blond hair caught my eye. The first thing I noticed about him was his eyes, which were ringed with laugh lines. I always love seeing laugh lines because they tell me that someone is happy. I watched him talk with other members of the congregation. There was something peaceful and comforting about the way he conducted himself. He was smiling and laughing, at ease with himself and others. All of a sudden, he looked up and our eyes met. I'm not exaggerating when I say I felt as though I'd been shot through with a bolt of lightning. When this happened, I was stunned. I was embarrassed, too, and looked down at my feet. Immediately, I was furious that I'd had any sort of response to this stranger. I was determined that no one should break through my hard exterior shell and play with my emotions. So before She-Rah could scold me, I quickly repaired the crack that had appeared in my armor. Sometime during the service, I had to walk past this man on the way to the bathroom. He was sitting with a group of women. In my bitterness at my own emotional vulnerability, I thought, He is probably an idiot. I dismissed the whole encounter entirely. 13 Link to comment

lu1535 March 2, 2020 Share March 2, 2020 I just started this book (Robyn’s NY Times bestseller, don’t ya know) and I'm sure you all heard my gasps of disbelief. One gasp was when Kody described seeing Christine for the first and being very attracted to her, all the while being at a dance with his new wife and "love" Meri. His eyes were roaming that soon?!?!?! Another painful eye roll came when I read Janelle admitting that she and Kody weren't "in love" when they married but that sure didn't stop the Kodes from knocking her up over and over and over again. It’s not about the sex, yeah right. Finally my loudest gasp came when Christine told the story of being devastated when another girl, looking to lay the stud, swooped in on Meri and Kody before she had the chance. She goes on to explain how plyg courtship is usually very quick so that the wife doesn't feel neglected, but with this girl the courtship was extended as they were waiting for her to turn 18!! Obviously this marriage didn't happen but WTH, he was ready to marry a teenager! What is with these people!?!?! I’m only 58 pages in and I’m terrified of what I’ll read next. Janelle and Meri’s brother Adam were only married about 6 months. After marrying Adam she found out he wasn’t very interested in his family’s way of worshipping (they were fundamentalists and he converted to LDS) and that there was a disconnect between them in all areas. They divorced but she stayed very close with his family and that is how she became friends with Meri. Meri was 19 and Kody about 21 when they married and I think it was 1 or 2 years into the marriage that this girl came into their life. Definitely before Janelle. I got the impression the girl was 17 almost 18. Meri and Kody were married in 1990. Janelle (24) and Kody (24) 1993 Christine (22) and Kody (25) 1994 I can't remember any mention of college. He seems to be a job hopper until he landed in sales. I hope this helps. 5 Link to comment

The poor guy has no choice but to sit through it too 😆 1 5 Link to comment
itsadryheat March 13, 2020 Share March 13, 2020 My ex husband used to do that when I watched Young & the Restless. Out of no where would come a snarky comment, followed by a question, outing him as a sneak watcher. Soaps were nothing compared to this TLC/WE crack. God help us all! 7 2 Link to comment
laurakaye March 13, 2020 Share March 13, 2020 I love when my husband wanders into the room while I'm shamefully watching SW - he'll watch for about 15 seconds and ask, "is that one the legal wife? Why is that one such a b!tch? Which one did he divorce?" To which I reply, "oh, honey. There are so many layers of deceit and passive-agressiveness going on, it would take me hours to break it all down for you." To which he says, "they're all crazy." Which is actually not a bad summary. 8 9 Link to comment
Roslyn March 13, 2020 Share March 13, 2020 I have watched the show from the beginning and my husband has zero interest in such television. Until...way back when (remember the catfish days!!??) I had just discovered the photos that were posted by JO and was looking at them. I didn't realize but my husband was walking through the room and had looked at my screen and the famous banana photo was right there. He burst out laughing and then said "what in the hell are you looking at!!??" So...I gave him the short version, he knew that I watched the polygamist show, but nothing else. While he doesn't watch it or anything, on weekend mornings when we are enjoying tea/coffee and morning nibble things he will randomly say "so...what are the Browns up to this week?". He still laughs and shakes his head at the ""Sam" scratched on the arm" photo. Like so many, his response was "WHO does that!!??" 7 2 Link to comment

I'm pretty sure it was her leg, it may have been the thigh or the calf. One of the few times I have felt pity for Meri, such a display of arrested development. 2 Link to comment
